Thanks for this recommendation series - good books never go out of style, be it "inspirational" or "instructional" ones, even today, with the RU-vid-academy and all. 🍻

Fantastic video. I've just got a static caravan to start almost of grid living in a small field surrounded by woods on my dads farm. BT always give us their old poles when they replace the ones in are fields so a more in-depth video about pole building would be fantastic, thanks.

I don't know if you know this but you got a mention in the Property section of Saturday's (25th August) Daily Telegraph. They had a feature on off grid living which i am not going to recommend to your viewers as it was featuring properties for sale from £220K to £1.8million! Anyway you were mentioned along with your RU-vid videos.

Seriously Max I wish you had a programme on the Discovery channel! They have shown some very good pioneering shows over the years and your knowledge would be invaluable to many people! There is a program about ‘Wilderness people’ in Alaska OMG what THEY have to survive through in winter like -25o 😳But fundamentally the same as your concepts. Just been online to buy these books👍🏻 I had a hippy Sherpa i built out of a panel van and a load of parts from scrapped caravans on ebay! Luxury. 😉

So basically a frame building then. A very ancient method of building. The Chinese just balanced their buildings without piles sunk into the ground, to help prevent destruction from earthquake. Also had flexible joinery. It works

Have enjoyed the book reviews - most informative. I don't know if you're going to do one on furniture, but even if you don't I urge you to get hold of a copy of this book. I have owned a very early edition for decades, and find it endlessly interesting. The thing is, just because the stuff is nomadic, doesn't mean you have to take it apart - ever. I reckon you'd enjoy this book : Nomadic Furniture 1: How to Build and Where to Buy Lightweight Furniture That Folds, Collapses, Stacks, Knocks Down, Inflates or Can Be Thrown Away

My first book arrived - Pole Building looks amazing :))) (thinks.....just need some woodland now) Guys at work very supportive so Im going to buy an old van and start stockpiling timber, broken machinery I can mend, and raiding recycling yards! Where I work deliveries arrive stacked on brand new timber dunnage, they throw it in a skip, what a waste :o..........You were so lucky to get FIVE acres for your price - today ONE acre is £18,000 :(( Im going to do this SOMEHOW! Thanks to you and your channel - a more methodical, detailed and helpful person I have yet to come across!

I've spent years building my own library of e-books covering various off-grid/self-sustainability issues. Many of which are public domain. These books seem a little more involved though. If anybody wants a copy of my library then you can get it from here: www.kizar.co.uk/TW/library.html

Straight scots pine trees for poles? I would just prefer 5 by 2 stud all around , also use screws so if it has to be dismantled for planning reasons or recycling etc

Hi Max, thanks for the great videos! Based on your discussion I got a copy of 'low cost pole building construction'. It's really useful and soon I intend to construct a sheep shelter by adapting on of the designs. As it's a US book, did you find that timber sizes are different here in the UK? I know that it's cheapest to build by using the full dimensions of commonly available timber, and just wondering if should explore this more before submitting planning permission? Cheers
@maximusironthumper
@maximusironthumper 4 года назад
Nope, you'll find that most timber in this country - although sold listed as metric - is actually just the old imperial sizes anyway. So 4"x2" (4 inch by 2 inch) would be 100mmx50mm (rough sawn) or 95mmx47mm if sold as PAR (planed all round).

Hi Bill that one's gone now, partly because I felt the info was out of date, partly because people were using 'clues' in the video to track me down and turn up here uninvited!

cob is a poor choice for a wet climate like ours. the old houses around here are stone for the first 5 feet or so and then cob above that so the cob can dry off. got to be wary about the choices made in American books, they're mostly deserts.

Books that give reasons for their advice are better, imo. Some styles of building are easier to make rodent proof for instance.

Have you considered writing your own book?. Self publishing is great, you have full control over the project, and the distribution side, you can order one copy or hundreds, ive published two now which have been successful, lookup wartime langford lodge and hut 203., there would be plenty of readers, drop me a msg if you would like to know More. Love these vids. Cheers, Will

@@maximusironthumper many thanks max, i sort of have a bash at everything, im currently restoring a wwii american jeep, inbetween that im building a wwii nissen hut and nearly completed a museum to go into it, i use funds from the books for the museum and nissen hut project, i try not to do to many projects at the same time as i start to burn out, i find it good for the soul to keep busy and always learning new skills and projects. Your vids are great, i would say with the variation of your skills you could write a book on metalwork, i.e. welding. Cast iron work etc.., vehicle restoration, living off grid, or just a year in the life of maximus iron thumper, we would all certainly purchase one. Look forward to the next vid and thanks for replying. Will

In the UK there are a few operators who offer reasonable deals for broadband over 3G and 4G. Speeds are fairly good and cheaper than BT which often require a fixed fee for line rental. I use this method with a 3G / WiFi modem unit. Other people use a mobile phone which also allows tethering to allow internet access from a laptop. Costs vary and dependent upon service operator.
