I had a 2014 Silverado 5.3L V8 did a lot with it off road driving / long road trips/ towing. Always got the job done. I hated the active fuel management it made the truck feel clumsy around town but was great on the highway & my best with cruse control on i got 25hwy. Oil changes were another down side it took 8.5 quarts of oil. Sold it this year & got $16,000 for it at 98,000 miles. Looking to purchasing the updated 2.7 i4 with 420 torque

The 2.7 turbo 4 sounds like it would be a great fit on the Colorado/Canyon. Too bad GM didn't take their 4.3 V6 and turn it into a turbo engine to better compete with Ford's 3.5 and 2.7 turbo six motors.

@@brewinfusedyeti3798 I think it will work great on the Canyon/Colorado. It's perfectly suited to their size. I'm surprised that they didn't keep the 2.8 Duramax Diesel that's in the current generation of Canyons/Colorados. I'm sure they could tweak the horsepower/torque ratings to make them more appealing. Given the success of the 3.0L Duramax Diesel in the 1500 series, I figured they would hold onto the 2.8.

Also....... This 2.7 was not designed to replace the 5.3, it was designed to replace the V6. Versus the V6 it blows it away, better MPG, better power, better torque, more reliable. In every way a better eng then that PO. S. V6 Yes, I am a truck guy amd would want the 5.3 for the versatility in haulimg weight and towing, but I work my truck to death. For a normal home owner that never over works their truck, especially those in the northern snow belt that need a reliable 4x4, this truck is perfect. And yes we got 26 MPG in ours, and have pics to prove it!

Honestly, I think this engine is ahead of its time, and inevitably all manufacturers will begin decreasing cylinders in favor of turbocharging V4 or V6s. I do think about how it's priced currently, and the 5.3 is a no brainer giving the small increase in price and proving reliability, but if this turbo V4 turns out to be durable and priced better, it could be a good truck. By far, the majority of pickup truck buyers are purchasing vehicles with capabilities that beyond exceed their necessities. In reality, the V4 performance is more than enough for an active buyer. 7,000 lbs towing, heavy payload, ~26 MPG highway. It makes sense, but V4 is associated with much smaller vehicles. Even though this engine is tuned actively (access to torque at low RPM's), GM (who has the worst marketing known to man for domestic brands) has done a terrible job marketing this engine in a way that can make people trust that a 4 Cylinder can provide the benefit of gas mileage and durability of getting worked to the bone as V8's do. Even though the only thing that gives it away is engine note, paying MSRP's of $40,000+ for 4 cylinders is such a hard sell to sway people away from V8's when broken out over the leasing term is materially nothing to the consumer.

Why would you compare "real world MPG" of this truck to EPA numbers on the 5.3L???? Here is another useless comparison for your viewers: my son's 2011 jeep liberty avg 13mg with a little 3.7L gas engine that he has to floor to get anywhere. My 2015 f250 4x4 crewcab Lariat with a 6.7L turbo diesel avgs. 15.4 mpg and i drive it like I stole it. The EPA's estimates for both of these vehicles are nowhere close to real world but NO ONE would expect a huge 3/4 diesel truck to get better MPG than a gas V6 in a little bitty jeep liberty. My wife's 2013 Lexus LX570 with the toyota 5.7L V8 avgs 11mpg but its got 400hp and is full time 4x4 and is fast as hell, when we hit the no man's land between San Antonio and Laredo (4 hours of nothing) at 120mph on hydraulic suspension and the rpms are no even close to the redline, your getting 7mpg. Sorry to bore everyone with useless numbers for comaprison but that is what you seem to want here... If your going to compare compare with your butt in a seat and a calculator, if your only offering opinion GREAT, then just do that, BUT call it that. If people opt for this 4cyl over a V8 its because they are reaching for even the 4cyl price and when you compare the price on paper it's rarely the real world option. Price them at the dealer, they offer 4cyl price discounts and the difference usually ends up being about $3-5K difference. Currently the double cab 4cyl can be had for $28K you can't touch a V8 for less than $34K and thats 2wd prices. This is chevy's new entry level engine, compare it to Ram 3.6L v6, Ford 3.5L tri-vec (not eco-boost), Toyota 4.0 or 3.5L, or Nissan's only engine 5.6L V8

Auto start stop is an idiotic way for car companies to lie about gas mileage. Your adding parts and work load to a smaller motor. It will not last as long as a V-8. Their big problem is auto start stop and the cylinder shut down. GM has done a good job of turning people off. Even if they correct those two things you are still left with the drop in quality that GM has made. The other problem is the way GM not only fired their people but the way they treated them when they fired them. GM is now selling more vehicles in China than in America. The taxpayers bailed GM out with all of that money and this is how they treat us! GOD I'm glad I work for Toyota! GM numbers for this year will be lower than last year as a lot of people have rightfully turned on GM.

The 2.7T gets 3mpg better city than the 5.3L which brings the combined average 2mpg higher than the 5.3L. Over 100,000 miles that's $2500 saved in fuel at today's prices. That's on top the $1500 price for the 5.3L. For people who don't need higher towing capacity this engine is a great standard one. Compare it to ford or dodge standard v6 non-turbo options really shows how great it is. The delay you felt in passing power was more likely transmission delay than turbo lag. The 2.7T is at full boost at 1500rpm and makes its 310hp@5600 so it pulls strong to redline. It has 348lb-ft of torque from 1500-4000rpm, the 5.3L has 383lb-ft at 4000rpm. So it has a much more useable torque curve without needing RPM to do work. TFLT RU-vid towing test at max capacity matched the times seen with the 6.2l and EcoBoost engines. That smokes the standard v6 from the competition and even the 5.3l. To get those times require no loss of speed towing up a 7% grade for miles. SOLO TFLT got 24mpg@70mph on their 100 mile test loop, above the EPA hwy rating. Their new mountain mpg test loop they got 19.9mpg solo. Unlike fords EcoBoost engines this has a single turbo and the I4 is much easier to work on than a v6. Fords 2.7 EcoBoost makes 325hp(15hp more) and 400lbft of torque(52 more). It's also a $995 option not standard like the GM engine. Down the road that extra turbo will also end up costing more.

Not all truck owners have the same needs this is why they have different engine options as well as rear diff, trans, tow package, etc. I like how everyone continues to bash this engine and yet most probably haven’t even driven one. If it’s not for you don’t buy it. But until you actually drive and compare it to the 5.3 don’t bash it. Trucks aren’t manufactured to race. If you are looking for that buy an LS GM car. The point of a truck is practicality and towing needs. FWIW: If you haven’t noticed yet all manufacturers are going to smaller more powerful engines. The new Toyota Tundra will be a V6 twin turbo hybrid. Just a few years ago truck and hybrid didn’t belong in the same sentence. But my bet is Toyota paves the way for other brands to follow and the days of the V8 truck will be more scarce. Just my .02 but I’m no expert by any means.

Nothing against you Tim, but the fuel economy arguments are getting old for me. People put too much faith in those numbers. That’s why it says your mileage will vary, not might vary, but will vary. Car companies know there will be inconsistencies, so why is there always pushback from consumers and critics? Those numbers are merely a hypothesis. I would consider the 2.7 liter. Ford shoppers seem to not mind turbo trucks. That’s why GM has one. It’s just with two fewer cylinders.

True. I wish I had a 5.3L V8 of similar build to run the fuel economy test with though. I just feel like the 1 MPG advantage really isn't that much at all. It looks like you live in the country. People who live in the suburbs and commute in crowded freeway traffic will absolutely see better real world mileage. Drive a 5.3 for a week and see if you get similar mileage, don't believe the numbers on the window. I'm currently driving an 06 Magnum RT with the 5.7 hemi rated 15-24. I have averaged as high as 21 for a 90% highway commute. But for mixed driving I get about 16-17. Sitting at traffic lights and accelerating back up to speed really kills the mileage on a V8. Currently I'm doing only city driving and getting 13mpg. I want to get a Canyon/Colorado with the 2.7 motor (please build it GM!) I think it would be the best of both worlds. A great commuter and a great weekender. Driving style is important too, but with a V8 you can get less than city if you drive hard. I have yet to see that with a 4 cyl. I used to have a 2000 4runner, the last year with the 2.7 NA 4cyl motor. I would floor it constantly and still get 20mpg.

I just bought a 2022 Silverado Custom using my mother inlaws GM discount and I must say that this 2.7 has some guts to it so don`t be fooled. I don`t plan on doing any serious hauling, but even if I did, I thing this think it would do pretty damn well, and it does well on gas also as I have yet to hit the highway and I`m getting almost 19 mpg.

I own a 5.3 Silverado. I Demoed a 22’ 2.7. There is a massive noticeable difference. If you are just going to use the truck as a daily commuter sure the 2.7 would probably work. I doubt it will last long but hey you never know. The 5.3 is much much better in every aspect. It’s a proven workhorse and it feels/sounds like a truck. And take note folks… why are we boasting MPG’s who buys a full size truck with MPG’s as a concern. 2.7 in suvs, in the Colorado sure. Full size no thank you

I would give this truck a shot, maybe lease it. The sound doesn't bother me because I want something quite. I hear a lot of Ford guys say the Ecoboost are fun compared to the 5.0. I recently purchased a 2.7T. It's impressive for a 4 cylinder but if you can, get a 5.3. Remember, all trucks have limitations. The 5.3 can't pull what the duramax can either but that doesn't make it inferior. I get almost 22mpg everywhere. It's lighter, less expensive (it had incredible rebates) and not slow. If I need to pull something heavy, I'll use my duramax.

real simple : GM wants people to buy a smaller / less size motor ( less material cost manufacturing) so they make more money in long run/term ( parts too-4 cylinders turbos eats parts ) But their isnt any meat to it , ie: metal mass so to speak , like a real motor ie v6 4.3 or v8 5.3 etc , so its just to save them money in overall manufacturing , no matter if the engine turbo ,head, valves etc fails at 15OK because its been pressure worn out because its under sized~ Gm dont care , its just money they want ~the bottom line

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ why in the hell Chevy didn't just put a 10 Speed and refine & updated the 4.3 V6 with 6 Individual Throttle Bodies and the Carbon Bed with aluminum door panels, instead of producing that 4 Cylinder gas guzzling quiet high pitched turd???? What a waste of time, money, effort, energy & resources. Tim ask the Chevy Engineers that, PLEASE!!!! Also why are the newer 19' models higher than the 18'. Ram literally lowering the truck 1" over 30mph to gain MPG's and Chevy going up 2" wth🤷🏻‍♂️
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 5 лет назад
They were simply following Ford I think. Ford has a small displacement 2.7L turbo engine as well albeit 6 cylinders. Engineers see more benefits with small turbo engines for MPGs than they do larger NA engines. That is just the way the auto market is going. The Ram lowering is air suspension and it isn't offered throughout the lineup, just on select models and for a price premium. It is cool tech, but there are concerns about reliability and that could be why Chevy shied away from it. My opinion though. Thanks for commenting!

I don 't care for muscle noise. Want my truck to be silent. Specially when I drive around some clients or getting work done from inside my truck. I had the V6 it was slow in comparison. And once you know how to spool your boost the lag is not present. I have enough experience towing from Miami to the Smokey Mountains and Turbo will keep up with any V8. Now understand I do drive moderately. Once lease is up. I am looking at the Ford Hybrid with laptop working console.
