their physical health, mental stimulation, and overall well-being. Puzzle toys engage a dog's natural instincts, turning mealtime into an enriching activity rather than a mundane routine. When dogs work to extract their food from a puzzle toy, they engage in mental exercises that mimic the problem-solving challenges they might face in the wild, tapping into their innate intelligence.
Moreover, using puzzle toys slows down a dog's eating pace, preventing them from gulping down their food too quickly. Rapid eating can lead to various health issues such as bloating, gastrointestinal discomfort, and even obesity. By requiring dogs to work for their food, puzzle toys encourage slower, more mindful eating habits, promoting better digestion and reducing the risk of digestive problems.
Additionally, puzzle toys provide valuable mental stimulation, which is crucial for preventing boredom and anxiety in dogs. Just as humans enjoy puzzles and brain teasers to keep their minds sharp, dogs benefit from mental stimulation to prevent behavioral issues stemming from boredom, such as excessive barking, chewing, or digging. Using puzzle toys as a part of their daily routine not only satisfies their physical hunger but also satisfies their innate need for mental stimulation and enrichment.
Furthermore, feeding dogs out of puzzle toys can strengthen the bond between pet and owner. Engaging in interactive feeding sessions fosters a sense of teamwork and companionship as dogs learn to associate their owners with positive experiences. It also provides an opportunity for owners to observe their dogs' problem-solving abilities and tailor the level of difficulty in the puzzles accordingly, ensuring an appropriate challenge that keeps their furry friends engaged and motivated.

Imagine having a hard day of work and your spouse says "Hey I know you're hungry... here's a puzzle. Solve it or starve. Let the games begin"

Can you please give some recommendations??? My dogs eat wet food for meals. Are there any puzzle dishes you can recommend for wet food? I guess that isn’t a thing really, but I have seen some that slow them down which I would think is more mental stimulation than a bowl. Thank you!!!!

I'm puzzled by all these negative comments. I'm always happy to "talk pets" and sometimes I agree and think it's a good idea and often it is just not for my pet-set-up. I adopted an adult dog from a shelter. When I got him he was wearing a cone. So I had to feed him by hand. And to this day he leaves his bowl of pellets untouched until I feed him by hand. Oh, he won't starve otherwise - and he eats the cat's food out of the cat's bowl. And that's another story. I can put the cat food out of reach on the counter. The cat then knocks pellets down for the dog. Another story. Before the dog, I had adopted the cat as an adult from the same shelter. I had a baby door custom-built so that the cat would be safe until he and the new (canine) arrival got used to each other. As I led the dog into the house, the cat jumped over the baby-door and shoulder-bumped the dog and they've been inseparable ever since.

No need for contraptions, bowls are perfectly fine. We must also understand that dogs see us as their providers as the leader/alpha so making them "work" for it seems counterproductive. Exercise, discipline, mental stimulation and tons of love gives you a happy pup. Puzzle toys are good for when your dog is alone so they have something to do and not stress

Dogs do NOT see humans as pack leaders / alpha, that is one of the biggest myths that has been proven to be false.

I have alway give my dogs food from a dog bowl, no problem. No behaviour problems, no exceptional health issues, happy, enough excercise and mental stimulation. So am i a bad dog owner?? Who are you to say it?? Everyone thinks they “know it”

I’m so tired of virtue, signaling in the dog care industry. There are people that can barely afford to feed their animal let alone spend $20 on a fancy bowl or contraption. so I get your point, but I think the much more important thing is that people feed their animals good food. The best puzzle toy in the world isn’t worth a damn if all it has and it is old Roy.

Agreed good food over knick knacks. Here's a weird idea. Play with your dog. Go to different parks. And maybe we put treats in puzzles not something they literally need to live.

of course using puzzle toys to feed your dog isn't compulsory. but a lot of breeds would benefit from having that little extra mental exercise each day. just like with humans, there are dogs that are kinda dumb and there are dogs that need some challenge in their life to feel fulfilled. a dog being bored is one of the reasons why some dogs start damaging furniture. and if you don't have that much money and buying several (feeding) toys is to expensive for you. you could share toys with friends or neighbours who also have a dog. this way each person in the "sharing group" has one or two toys, and you switch them out every now and then for other ones. this is a cheap way to keep your dog mentally challenged and make your dog a happier dog.

Exactly, just spent enough time with them and expend enough energy - you can do it for free Also saying a food bowl is wrong means for hundreds of years we've been feeding our dog wrong

@@ChristiaanHW ok role reversal, everytime you eat you have to figure out a series of puzzles to get 1 bite. Come home after a hard day of work and now you have to figure out how to make dinner and how to eat it. Get home at midnight and hungry? Too bad figure out the puzzle. Food isn't supposed to be difficult. Treats are earned. Everyone and everything is entitled to food.

@@JamesMcchicken first, your example is flawed. while humans often have to work full time, most dogs don't have to do that. so dogs have plenty of time to play with their food. second, it depends on the dog. like i already said. a dog i often take care of needs some challenge in order to even eat. if it's no challenge he doesn't want to eat (he's a Golden Doodle, they are known to be picky eaters) of course you're not going to let your dog starve. but a lot of dogs/breeds would be delighted to have a bit of a challenge around getting their food. their ancestors didn't get the food ready to eat in front of them either, they had to go hunt to eat. and several breeds still like to do some effort to get their food. ultimately it's up to the owner of the dog to decide how to feed their dog. but all the video and i try to convene is that a decent percentage of dogs could use a bit of a challenge (once in a while) to get their food.

I've never had a dog wolf down food, as we don't limit food access. We do not keep our dogs dependent on a "specific set schedule". We have never had an overweight dog using this method. We've had 7 different dogs over my lifetime, 3 mutts and 4 AKC's, all different breeds, the graze method hasn't made a difference weight wise. Every single dog lived to be 12-14 years old with minimal if any health problems. If your puppers don't feel like the food will "disappear" after a bit, they don't need to rush to eat. I watched my sister do the "schedule" mode with her Springer Spaniel and that poor dog ate so fast, he'd puke. Her reasoning for the schedule was that Springer's are prone to bloat-- seems a bit counter-intuitive. We do use puzzle toys on occasion (especially during the winter time, on days when we can't have outdoor playtime) for mental stimulation, simply using low calorie healthy trainer treats.

This is a terribly worded video that i think may bury you. Saying someone is a bad dog owner because they may not be able to afford altering food mats and puzzle toys (because the dog will get bored of the same one, and they can be very pricey) is extremely insensitive and just not correct. This is especially true for dogs that get mental simulation doing something else. This also insinuates to your pet that they need to work to get food. Not healthy.
