Funny to see Armand Aucamp speaking in Afrikaans and Hans speaking Dutch, but they have no trouble understanding each other. That is how similar these languages are

You probably did not really notice but at the start the one guy spoke Dutch and the other one spoke Afrikaans. Hence the Dutch subtitles. We can understand a lot of Afrikaanns but not everything.

They could have learned picked up this dutch in colonial times and the language did not go away

Seems they got on pretty well. I get the impression things that happened later in history made the perspective very negative. The Dutch were notorious for their drinking and smoking, and if you have an abundance of cows and no brandy it's a sensible deal. That's what trade was about, you bring stuff to places where there isn't any of that, at the high expense of a dangerous sailing trip, because it's much more valuable there. It's not like porcelain was very valuable in China or nutmeg on the Banda islands. They had no other ships with brandy to compare prices with, nor could the Dutch pick who they bought cows from. That's a 21th century view on the global free market. The sale of land is more complicated, but that does not mean the San didn't understand the Dutch wanted that piece of land to build on and farm on for the refreshment of ships, and that both parties went throough eachothers ceremonies to seal the deal, including signing the contract. The Dutch were nice and friendly, they brought interesting stuff, the Khoisan had a market for their surplusses. Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me, they didn't know what the future held either. And why do have to pity Krotoa? Obviously a bright girl in a key position, seems like a better and more interesting life than most people at that time anywhere on earth. It probably went ugly later on in history and in this series, we'll see, but I don't see much ugliness so far.

I hope you guys enjoy this new journey we are starting with this series. I’d love to show all the connections the Dutch all over the world. And the lasting legacy we left in those places. Especially in South Africa, a country with so much Dutch history. A lot of my family went there over the centuries, and started new life’s over there. I’d love to know what became of them, and if there are still many of them around in South Africa.

Thank you Highly for paying attention to this new series and also thanks to Michel. I enjoyed the first part very much. Looking forward what tomorrow brings. Very curious about the rest of the story. Not all good I'm sure, but not all bad either. Discovering other parts of the world, what every country in Europe with big ships did in those days, was also a big discovery for those people in those countries all over the world. Followed by drawing maps and calculating distances must have been important for all people and countries back then and still even now. So I think besides the wrong things that happened in that process, those explorers also did a lot of good things. They opened the world to and for everyone as we know it now. 🧡🇳🇱

Well that 25 min. went quickly. I'll be watching. I had a friend who spent a year in South Africa , never stopped talking about it, drove me crazy, but I remember he always called it the most beautiful country in the world.

Yeah, kids did go out and explore the world with the VOC. Half of them never came back. You might find this interesting: *The DANGEROUS Life of a Dutch VOC Ship Sailor in the 17th Century*

LOL AT the undertitles for the guy from BRABANT, I was born in Brabant in The Netherlands and they say Brabants is not a language but they still use undertitles. Hypocritical a bit maybe?

We seem to do the same as those people you mention at 12:30 but we are with a million times more people since then. All the leather and all the flesh are consumed barely different from that era. We make shoes and so forth from the leather and eat the flesh nearly every day either be it in small processed slices or big chunks at our meals. We are nothing different except we industrialized this.

Don't get me wrong HXC, but I think by now, thanks to Michel, you went well over the point of knowing more about the Dutch heritage than the vast majority of the Dutch themselves, sadly.🤗 I can only appreciate that very much, and hope you dig up much more in due course. I love it, but can't help but feel a bit ashamed about the lack of "widespread Dutch knowledge".😔 I don't want to put you on the spot in any way Paul, but just wonder if you have the urge to know the American heritage in a comparable way?🤓 And with that I mean from an American point of view, not the "in foreign perspective made documentary's" as you've commented previous.🧑‍🎓
