Robin's ability to go from fast-talking humor to gut-wrenching dramatics was incredible. Good Morning Vietnam is a wonderful example of that talent. RIP

I want to write about Robin Williams german voice actor: here in Germany really everything get dubbed. And that is done very professionally and very well! You can imagine that in the case of Robin Williams that can be very difficult! His german voice actor was Peer Augustinski and he really did a wonderful job on every film! When Robin Williams won the Oscar for "Good Will Hunting" he even sent Mr. Augustinski a replica of the Oscar with the words "Thank you for making me famous in Germany"! Unfortunately Mr. Augustinski suffered a stroke in 2005 and was unable to continue his work as a voice actor. He died in 2014 at the age of 74. Just two months after Robin Williams death! May both rest in peace!

My father-in-law was a Vietnam veteran. He didn't talk much, and said even less when it came to his service. One day when we were visiting, 'Good Morning Vietnam' came on TV and we watched it together. Turned out that he was there when Cronauer was DJing. He told me about how great Cronauer was and how much moral improved. After Adrian left, the radio continued to play current music. That was easily the longest conversation I had ever had with my father-in-law. Me: What did your father do in the Army? Was he infantry? MP? Medical corps? Chairborn? Wife: He was in the motorpool. Me: That doesn't sound that bad. Wife: He worked in tank recovery. Me: ...say no more. 🤢 FYI: The real Adrian Cronauer said that this movie was 45% true. He wasn't forced out of the service. His time was up and he was honorably discharged. Went on to become a lawyer.

I'd say this is one of Robin's best performances, but then they all are. A truly irreplaceable actor and comedian.

To follow up…GOOD MORNING VIETNAM was released 35 years ago today. ROBIN WILLIAMS improvised most of his lines when on air so the laughing you can hear from the cast, and even some of the crew, is genuine.

The “Those were identical twins” twins were also in Terminator 2, with the two playing ‘the’ orderly skewered by the liquid metal unit.

The kid’s speech about, “Who is the enemy?” is incredibly profound. There are always 2 sides to every war.

The scene that really moves me is when they're all stopped in traffic and Adrian performs for the guys in the trucks. One reason why is because in real life Robin performed on USO tours and performed for people in the Middle East. As Cassie eluded to, Robin had a gift for providing a light for people and sometimes a light for the people that needed it the most.

I love how director Barry Levinson allowed Robin the freedom to improvise most of his dialog and comedy routines. Sure, Robin accidentally slips in a few anachronistic modern jokes, but he's still pure genius with his performance. RIP Mr. Williams, you are deeply missed.

Just a little side note. The actor you pointed out laughing in the back ground in an early scene was Robert Wuhl the funny coach in Bull Durham. The scene on the mound in Bull Durham where they were discussing wedding gifts was a classic. Robin Williams mind was @ 78 rpm while us mere mortals is @33 rpm (old records reference). Truly a generational talent. RIP

I'm a disabled Viet. vet. who has always loved history. I'm glad that you have found the importance of movies based in historical fact. I enjoyed yours & Carly's reaction to "Tombstone" & "We Were Soldiers". Also, your reaction to "300". In regards to Viet. & "Good Morning Vietnam", humor was how everybody gets through their time spent in any war zone. That & Red Cross girls! Upon arrival in Viet., I arrived during the Tet Offensive, I was told to NOT keep track of how long 'til you leave. 30 days before your scheduled departure you became a "short timer" & got a drawing of a pin-up girl with 30 areas to black out. Low point: When the ship carrying the beer & sodas sunk. We had to mix vodka with kool-aid. High point: Ann-Margret & the Bob Hope Show.

The best part of this movie are Robin's monologues. They were actually mostly ad-libbed. Such a brilliant mind!!

This is such a great movie. Adrian was an actual guy who was a broadcaster in Vietnam, and Williams played him perfectly

As funny as this movie is, imagine how much funnier Robin Williams is for those of us who are a little older and understand all of his references and jokes.

The best quote of this reaction, "Why can't he share the real news?" A question that is as relevant in 2023 as it was in 1967.

This and his following Dead Poets Society were the two Robin Williams films that cemented my deep love for both his comedic and dramatic chops. If you haven’t seen Dead Poets, it is absolutely worth adding to your list.

An eternal classic. It's been said a lot, but Williams was a very special talent. Someone's funny, someone's a good dramatic actor, someone's good at improv... and there's Robin Williams.

This movie is one of the best examples of just how fast Robin's mind worked. He was a comedic genius. He was also able to go from comedy to dramatic in .3 secs. RIP Robin.

I was a fan of Robin from the first moment I saw him on Happy Days" His movie "What Dreams May Come" got me through the hardest time of my life. His humor, his kindness, his devotion to his fans and his generosity was unmatched. His ability to take us from laughter to tears back to laughter is so sorely missed....we really needed him these past few years. We all miss Robin, he was one of a kind, I'm so grateful he walked through my lifetime, he was a gift.

To see what the Vietnam War was like for an infantryman, Platoon is considered the movie that comes closest to an actual portrayal. Excellent movie.

The twins that were censoring the reports were also in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. They played the security guard at the mental hospital that were getting coffee. The T1000 was the floor and both twins were used in the next shot.

One of Robin Williams’s best. I love how all the radio broadcasts, they gave him a broad outline of the content, and let Robin go nuts. Consequently, you can tell everyone else isn’t acting when they’re cracking up at the jokes.

Most of Robin's lines on air were improvised on the spot. He had one of the quickest minds ever. I think for someone with that genius, the disease he ended up with, makes it more understandable how he died.

Cassie, don't you remember? Donna Reed was the actress who played Mary in It's A Wonderful Life. You and Carly LOVED that movie. You and her were gushing and crying throughout that movie. I remember the scene your reaction to the scene where Mary welcomed George into the house that needed fixing and the minute she said "Welcome home, Mr. Bailey," your face lit up with delight. It was very lovely. Go back and check it out. I'm not kidding.

The sequence with Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" is amazingly simple, beautiful and haunting.

Tuan's monologue at the end couldn't be truer. "You claim that miles away from home? I'm the enemy?! YOU are the enemy!".

Robin Williams was such an incredible actor. Yes his comedy could make your face and stomach hurt from laughing. In some of his dramatic roles he could absolutely tear your heart out. He played every role with a passion and emotion that few can match. RIP 💔

One of Robin's finest performances. This movie showed not only the nightmares of what was going on but also those such as those with Armed Forces Radio that tried to get the minds off of such horrors. It also showed the politics and the attempt to "win their minds, win their hearts" which ultimately failed. Robin was a true hero himself how he toured with the USO to entertain troops all over the world. He basically took the baton from Bob Hope and carried on.

The saddest part about this movie, aside from the ugly truths it touches on, is that because of his personal insecurities and emotional difficulties, Williams was worried that it was bad and would ruin his career and wanted to take his own money to go back and re-record scenes that he was insecure about. The sweetest thing I know about the movie is that the little bit where the older student is questioning him about the "softballs" was not acting or scripted, that man was really concerned about the equipment for the scene and so was talking to Robin about the props. His stilted, broken-but-adequate English in that moment where you were so happy he learned to speak English is how he really spoke, and his deference to Williams was his true manner :).

Robin Willams talent is so unimaginable and so impressive that you just have to shake your head to know that he lives his stand up routine everywhere all the time. ------- Maybe that was the price he paid to give us such joy at every level. ------------ I also think Robin Williams was the blueprint for Comedic actors to delve into dramatic material as well. ------ After Williams showed you can do both movie studios and directors started to ask of such work by Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey to name a few.

Das Boot is such a great movie, and Memphis Belle is a very underrated classic

The short actor who says " I hate the fact that you never salute me " passed away. He was in The Godfather 2 - When Harry Met Sally also a small part as the limo driver in " This Is Spinal Tap " and other great movies .

This was the first of Robin Williams' GREAT film performances--he got an Oscar nomination and he was AMAZING. This story is actually based on a REAL guy named Adrian Cronauer, who was a really funny DJ in Vietnam, but who said after the movie came out, "If I'd done on the air what he did, I'd still be in the brig today", which should tell you something. I also recommend CITY SLICKERS (the not-funny lieutenant, Bruno Kirby, starred in that as well with Billy Crystal) and DO hope you get to MEMPHIS BELLE very soon (a lovely WWII movie well worth seeing, and yes, based on historic fact). I'm glad you're watching Robin, though--I still miss him, all these years later, and still think he was one of our brightest lights. Thanks for this great reaction, Cassie!

Casualties of War is the best of the Vietnam genre. Seeing Michael J Fox in that role was a revelation.

Williams did all the radio stuff off-the-cuff and ad lib. The director just put him in the chair and let him go. What a treat for the filmmakers. He was an amazing actor and could improv better than anyone. A lot of people don't know he is a Julliard-trained actor with real acting chops. Thanks for reacting!

Kelly's Heros is a great war movie. Very funny and the most unique war movie ever.

I’m glad you understood the contradictions of love and friendship against the terrible nature of war… and also that you got a chance to enjoy the amazing talent of Robin Williams as both a manic comic and sensitive actor. This movie was important for many reasons, not least of which is that it gave Americans a chance to see a different perspective of that war, and to see the Vietnamese people differently as well. Even though Adrian Cronauer was only in Veitnam a year, his famous Good Morning Vietnam opening was used by every DJ after him that did the morning show, including Pat Sajak, yes the host of Wheel of Fortune was in the army and the DJ in Siagon for Armed Forces Radio from 1968 to 1969. Funny side story, when Sajak was on the air in Vietnam he accidentally cut a live feed from the just elected President Nixon who was doing a special radio broadcast to the troops in Vietnam. Sajak felt it best not to finish the interrupted broadcast. The troops didn't hear it until a taped version a day later. I imagine Sajak got into a tad bit of trouble over that lol

I met and had a ten minute conversation with Robin Williams in December 2004 in Kuwait right before we pushed north to Iraq. Watching this always makes me happy. Thanks for watching this.

Only Robin Williams could make Vietnam funny. In a close second Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. Rest in Peace, what a genius.

The news tickers bring the seriousness even more than the personal drama. Especially given that despite all his humor the conflict continued to escalate. His scene with the troops making them laugh was definitely the best part of the movie

The actor playing the lieutenant who thinks he's funny is (was) Bruno Kirby. One of my favorite character actors. He has a great supporting role as Billy Crystal's friend in City Slickers. The director of this movie gave him little parts in many of his other movies (i.e. Tin Men starring Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfus).

21:13 Ethel Merman was a well known and popular singer and actress who mostly performed in musicals, both on Broadway and in movies & TV, and she had a very distinct, brassy and especially LOUD singing voice that could never be mistaken for anyone else.

A gem of a person who will be sorely missed by millions. RIP Mr. Williams. Thank you for lifting our spirits in dark times and making us laugh all these years.

I saw Robin Williams on TV on Mork and Mindy in 1977, I was an instant fan. I saw this movie when came out. I was in the U.S. Force when it was released. Too many things to say. After his death, it took me months to watch him again. The radio portion of this film were "unscripted," Robin made them up on the spot. IMO, he is and will always be the greatest comedic mind of my life time. I am 64 years old. Good Will Hunting is a great film to watch. I miss him every time I hear a joke, or see improv comedy. He was and is without peer.

This movie is my favorite Robin Williams movie...yes, you get to see 2 sides of the man - his ability to be a serious actor and his ability to just be his comedic self - they're both masterful attributes - we will never see a person like this ever again - RIP Robin Williams. The conflict within the movie is everywhere - the war, the cultural differences, the inter-office rivalry and the internal conflict within Robin Williams character of wanting to do the right thing while flying in the face of authority. There is also his attempts to win over the people he meets using comedy and fun to win over their hearts and minds, rather than by force and fear. A truly wonderful film. Glad you enjoyed watching this and I look forward in watching your next war movie.

As I'm sure someone has said Adrian Cronauer was a real person and this is loosely based on his time in Vietnam. My parents, who met in Laos can attest to how volatile it was there at that time. I'm always thankful they made it back home to the states, or I would not exist. .... Another great comedy about the craziness of war is MASH, the film the series was based on.

I didn't see anybody in the comments mention that this was based on a real person. Adrian Cronauer was a real DJ during the Vietnam conflict, and became extremely popular with the troops. A suggestion for War Movie Wednesday is "A Bridge On the River Kwai". An all-time great movie.

Adrian Cronauer. 1965, he volunteered for a transfer to Vietnam because he wanted to travel. Upon arriving there, his first job was as news director for Armed Forces Radio in Saigon, but when the morning host's slot became vacant shortly after his arrival, he took over the show, known as Dawn Buster because it started at 6 a.m. He opened it with the greeting "Goooooood morning Vietnam!", which was immortalized in the subsequent movie's title. Cronauer left Saigon in 1966, but subsequent DJs continued to use his signature greeting, including Pat Sajak.[14][16][17] His military awards include the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with bronze service star, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Award and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.[4]

I was 9 when this came out. I remember my dad had the soundtrack cassette. It was cool that it had all the songs and the DJ segments of Robin Williams. Nowhere To Run is still One of my favorite oldies.

Robin makes us laugh so hard we're all wiping the tears from our eyes, literally! But then you remind us that he was taken from us WAY too soon and my eye's well up with tears for a whole different reason. I loved that guy and his humor since his early days making us even laugh at the Fonz! (his early appearances on Happy Days) May he rest in piece!

Robin Williams' career was already developing into something very special when this film came along. The perfect vehicle for his ad lib improv style comedy, his performance is both rib achingly funny, as well as incredibly poignant and given the plethora of Vietnam films that had already been made by this point, Good Morning Vietnam came at it from a very different perspective indeed, and refreshingly so. His character's connection with the troops is especially poignant knowing that he lives in relative safety, whereas those others are facing real danger every day. The soundtrack was epic, and much loved, but it also featured extracts of Williams' performance making it even more special and unique. We really lost someone exceptional when Robin Williams passed and I for one miss him very much.

This was just perfect for me. I’ve not been able to bring myself to watch a Robin Williams film since he died; it’s just too difficult on my heart. He was like everyone’s funny Uncle we all miss so much.

This is part of a set including Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Born on the 4th of July and Apocalypse Now. There are more movies that deserve honourable mentions, including Rambo.

I used to work at a radio station as a DJ/personality. And we always did celebrity birthdays in the morning (so people could say "Today is my birthday; I share a birthday with "). And I'd always include what movies those celebrities were known for. So, on Robin Williams' birthday, I'd say something like "Today is Robin Williams' birthday. He is of course known for movies such as "Aladdin", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "Hook", "Good Will Hunting", and of course... "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING VIETNAAAAM!!!!!" I loved yelling that as a radio DJ doing an impression of a radio DJ.

For anyone that is interested 'Forces Radio' has a very long history. Having been born into a (British) Army family and then went on to serve myself, we lived in countries like Hong Kong, Malawi and Germany and one of the constants was (and still is) being able to tune in to an FM radio station and hear familiar hosts, the world over. All the way through my childhood in Germany in the 80's BFBS (British Forces Broadcast Service) broadcast from London and also from Germany as well, was compulsive listening at home, and in the workplace. Later, in the late 90's or early 2000's a second station was added to increase the breadth of programming. It really was a lifeline for many.

I hope 'The Killing Fields' is on your list. It's not the blood & guts war movie the title suggests, it's more a tale of the survival of the human spirit it the face of adversity. Hope you catch it some day.

Wow, would love to see you do a reaction to Memphis Belle. A great film, that I feel has been somewhat forgotten over the years. It's a great stoey, and a fantastic cast. And I've never seen any YT reactor react to it. Hoping you get around to it some day.

Glad you liked the film. A little trivia for you: There was an actual Adrian Cronauer who was a DJ in Vietnam and he would have told you that the only things that were true in the film was that he was a DJ in Vietnam and that he did teach English off duty. What wasn't true was that his Jeep was not hit by a landmine, he didn't have a romance with a Vietnamese woman, didn't teach his class swear words, and did not have a friend who was a VC. He was not forced to leave the country. He did his time in Vietnam and after it was up, he was honorably discharged. A lot of the broadcasts in the film were improvised by Williams. Williams, much like the character he played, always hoped for the troops to come home safe as he did several USO tours.

I stood in line to watch a movie and he's even funnier in real life. Truly a kind hearted and gifted man. The world needs an Adrian Cronower now more than ever.

Adrian Cronauer was a real military radio DJ in Vietnam, although, while he was controversial, there were never any huge problems as depitcted in the movie.

You should know Donna Reed from 'It's A Wonderful Life" and the identical twins(Don & Dan Stanton) were in Terminator 2 as one of the hospital security guards that the T-1000 takes the look of before killing the guard. They were in Gremlins 2 too.

Oliver stones "platoon" has always been my favorite ever since I was a kid. No I don't think Cassie would enjoy it all that much. But I do think its a must watch if we are doing war films. Especially Vietnam films. It has an amazing cast and a great director who actually served in during the Vietnam War

Great reaction video. The scene with him meeting the troops in the trucks before heading out was one of the most realistic seens in a war film. There's nothing like seeing someone from home overseas and interacting with them. It's good for the soul.

I have a great movie as a suggestion for you Cassie. *"The Wind and the Lion"* with *Sean Connery* , Candice Bergen and Brian Keith. I just watched it on RU-vid's free movies. One of my absolute favorites! FANTASTIC! And Brian Keith as Teddy Roosevelt is epic! It is *DEFINITELY NOT* a Bond film!

28:52 The soldiers he meets in the trucks are 1st Infantry (Big Red One). My father's first tour of duty in Vietnam was the same time as Adrian Cronauer (1938-2018), he was a 1st Infantry engineer. Saw this movie in the theater. Robin Williams was very significant in my TV/movie upbringing from Mork & Mindy and his stand up and beyond. Rest in Peace.

The "not funny guy" was Bruno Kirby, a great character actor. If you haven't seen them the City Slicker movies from the 90's were quite entertaining with him, Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern. Can't really remember the sequel that well, but the first was another great movie that blended comedy with some emotional drama.

This movie starts so hysterically funny that you almost forget there’s a war on until the bar explosion.

RIP Robin Williams, he was so diverse with his comedy, everything from performing stand-up to his films. One of his highlights as an actor was his dramatic sequences and how fast he was able to go from one scene to the next either laughing, yelling, to crying. He's a legend. Cassie, if you're ever in a bad or sad mood, watch his show Mork & Mindy, he will definitely cheer you up. Cassie, Walter Brennan was an actor way back in the day of the film Support Your Local Sheriff with James Garner and Disney's The Gnome Mobile, plus he did many other films and appearances.

Das Boot is honestly the best movie on your list. I would suggest checking it out for yourself. It's been wild watching you not only grow as a movie buff but as a person as well apparently. Keep up the great work and positive vibes.

Das Boot (The Boat) and Memphis Belle are great movies. Das Boot is in German though. Very good and very successful German movie. Which shows the Horror of war. (Stalingrad and Der Untergang are also great German war movies.)

Been a huge Robin Williams fan since I was a kid, and watched this one in the theater when I was fourteen. Hilarious, poignant, and heart-breaking. A real 10/10.

Memphis Belle is a great, underrated movie that never gets any reactions. Other favorite war movies are The Dirty Dozen, The Guns of Navarone, Kelly's Heroes, Where Eagles Dare, and Dam Busters. Another good war set comedy is MASH. It's noticeably different than the TV series in tone.

It's even more bitter sweet because Robin was heavily involved with the USO, though many don't even know about it. He would go overseas and entertain the troops ALL the time.

I got to see a USO show December 2003, at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan and Robin Williams was hilarious doing his stand up. It was the only USO show I saw in my 25 years of service but it was the best.

The Fisher King is another great Robin Williams film, with Jeff Bridges turning in an outstanding performance as well.

I’m from New Jersey and in this movie is a Jersey icon , “Uncle Floyd “ Vivino. He did a parody of a children’s show on a uhf channel,just before cable television was a thing. He would play the piano,sing ,and he had a puppet sidekick called Oogie.

Watch "The Bridge on the River Kwai." Highest grossing film of 1957. Winner of 7 Oscars, including best picture. A fantastic war movie.

I am a 20 year veteran. My father also served 20 years and was in Vietnam. I can assure you that the military does not wear our hats indoors. That is all.

Robin is always going to be one of my heroes and what I love about him is that even after he passed people are so mesmerized about he was the master of improvisation because it was so natural for him
