I don't know if you know but the other horsemen were originally in the script. They're still in a little "extra chapter" in the script book which you can buy (I really really recommend it, it still has a lot of scenes which were cut out and even if it's "just a script" it's brilliantly written and kind of a complete different experience from the series).

SPOIL POINT The only thing I really, REALLY missed was the Other Four Horseman of the Apocolypse. I didn't think I would, but I really did. Neil sort of alluded it was a trade off, that he got to have the Agnes Nutter witchburning scene in, and he fought execs tooth and nail over including it, but he had to ditch the Other Horseman. It's literally the funniest part in the book for me. "I'm sodding not, I'm People Covered in Fish." They also needed one more scene with Adam dealing with his parents, or just the one expanded where he's talking about ley lines, so we get their relationship better--especially given the ending. We need how the dad in particular interacts with his kid. For me though, the most important thing is nailing Crowley and Aziraphale. And they did. Absolutely. And how wonderful was the holy water backstory addition? It was exquisite.

I missed the Other Four Horsemen, but I really liked getting the additional content of the Holy Water backstory and the other Crowley & Aziraphale history. I prefer it this way, we got more content that would have never made it out of Neil & Terry's notes. Oh, plus the ending that gets a bit more plot than the book.

These are my feelings exactly - this show left me feeling good and smiling, even though it was about the end of the world. I had read the book last year when I heard they were making an adaptation and David Tennant was in it, and immediately fell in love with the concept and the story. Just as Aziraphale can tell Tadfield is loved by Adam, you can tell the world and characters of Good Omens are loved by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. And I agree, Michael Sheen is the stand-out performance here, and Aziraphale is absolutely lovable. Every moment between him and Tennant's Crowley was gold!

I have read "Good Omens" many more times than I care to admit. (Several times a year - book, audio book, and radio performance.) So yes, I did see a lot of changes, and there were a lot of lines that I missed, but at no point did I think they were making a mistake. I can understand why they changed, and appreciated how they changed. (And it helped, a lot, that it was Neil Gaiman was the one making most of the changes.) Thank you so much for your review and video.

I so enjoyed Good Omens. It was so fun and honestly, the lack of gore and violence for what is to be the end of the world I really appreciated that aspect and Sheen and Tennant really work well together and the casting was so spot on. I binged it because I enjoyed it so much. The music was so good in this. I really struggle to find fault with it. I remember Neil Gaiman tweeted a lot about what he was giving up to Make Good Omens he had such a hands-on approach and it really shows
@simonoleary9264
@simonoleary9264 5 лет назад
It was very much a labour of love for Gaiman. Apparently Terry Pratchett made him promise to create a TV adaption of the book, so Neil Gaiman felt honour bound to make it as faithful as possible. He would be hard pushed to have made it any better.

I loved this miniseries - so glad to know not having read the source material yet didn't adversely affect the experience. The cast was amazing, the interplay between Michael Sheen and David Tennant was brilliant. I'm definitely going to have to check out more of Michael Sheen's work, he was just delightful. I agree the kids were well cast - very genuine, not at all movie-precocious. I really enjoyed the female member's "not having it" attitude. The book of prophecies ultimately came across to me like it was set up for bibliomancy rather than being laid out sequentially, but that was a cute touch. To say much more would get spoilery and I don't want to do that, so I'll just suggest everyone watch this. Having grown up in the heyday of miniseries, I also have to agree there's something to be said for a narrative with a beginning, a middle, an end, and that's it. Some things just don't need to be dragged out endlessly. You didn't have any complaints? That's high praise indeed! Happy it helped raise your spirits.

I loved this too and Michael Sheen was also my favourite. Neil Gaiman has said that he's done with showrunning, he only did it for Terry. So if there is anymore, it's doubtful to come from him. Personally, I kind of hope there isn't anymore, I like the idea of it being a one off thing. Although, if they do the Witchfinder Army might be a good place to go. Still has that link but they can go where and when they like, without affecting the known story.

If there ever was an additional foray into this fandom universe on-screen, I could definitely see something containing more of the misadventures between Aziraphale and Crowley through the ages like in episode 3 (although I don't know how that would work without Gaiman). I'm not as sure what they could do as a sequel to the show, since the two had their face-swap freaking all the celestial agents out of contacting them again. More misadventures, I guess? The Witchfinder idea sounds like a great one.

Thank you for mentioning Michael Sheen's acting - many reviews I've seen mostly praise David Tennant and while his acting was very good as well, it's Michael Sheen's acting here that I keep thinking about, the way he managed to portray all of Aziraphale's complicated emotions through the tiniest changes in his face, the way he plays him with so much nuance and complexity, so when the end twist starts happening you immediately know something is "wrong"... What a phenomenal performance.

Completely agree! The entire sequence with SPOILERS... Crowley-as-Aziraphale in the bookshop and in Heaven was amazing. From the subtle changes in mannerisms, tone of voice, facial expressions, etc, it gave off the impression that while yes this should be Aziraphale, there is something off about the presentation and performance that you can't quite put your finger on, and it's almost entirely done through Michael Sheen's facial expressions and body movements. And i think the ability to not give away too much but also just enough was wonderfully done both by Tennant and Sheen, though with Sheen we get a lot more with more of a view of his facial expressions and eye movements. How he created a visual and physical lexicon of Aziraphale's character and Tennant of Crowley's character that we've become familiar with and subverted/changed it oh so subtly but oh so enough to notice was really the highlight of the series among the many scenes of amazing performances

While I absolutely love the show, I think one of my favourite things about it might be how amazingly the cast (specifically Gaiman, Sheen, Tennant) are responding to the fans, especially in terms of the ship Ineffable Husbands, but also in the way they present gender. It's like, "Yeah, no, angels/demons don't really have a gender and the whole concept is a bit 'eh' to them but you bet your ass Aziraphale and Crowley are in love", which is really fucking amazing considering we just as well could have had another Supernatural scenario with "sToP mAkInG eVeRyThInG gAy" thrown around and I am so incredibly thankful for that

David Tennant and Michael Sheen were adorable together as Crowley and Aziraphale! I loved the expansion of their history particularly the opening sequence of episode three!Nearly everyone was perfect for their roles and it was an extremely book accurate adaptation😀 Also loved the surreal and cartoonish aspects that they used😀Particularly the weird little asides that they had😄 The one criticism I do have (and it’s a nitpicky one) is that that even though I am very glad that they included the narration from the book, I kind of hated the fact that that they had an American narrator🙁I am sure Francis is a fine actress but it felt wrong to have an American narrate such a quintessentially English story. It felt like the equivalent of casting an American to play the Doctor! It would have been much more fitting to have someone like Emma Thompson or Stephen Fry! But overall a wonderful adaptation and a show that just makes you feel warm inside by the end!😊 Hands down one of favorite book adaptations!😀😇👿

I LOVED IT. I’ve read the book multiple times, and thought the series made a great job. The things that stood out to me as different between the book and the show was 1: The historical relationship between Crowley and Aziraphale got more room in the show (very good call imho, it was amazing), and 2: The OTHER four horsemen missing. They didn’t really bring much to the story as it was, so I can see why they made that choice, but it was something I noticed. I agree with you on the portrayal of Death. I’ve read a lot of Pratchett, and Death in Good Omens (the book) is a lot like Death from the Discworld books (at least in my mind). I wasn’t overjoyed with this version, and I wasn’t a huge fan of where they went with it appearance wise but with that said I didn’t think it was bad. Just, not as good as the rest of the series, which was the best thing I’ve seen in aaaages! I totally agree, I had the hugest grin on my face, and according to boyfriend, I was talking to the TV, singing along with the score, laughing out loud and just being completely carried away! I was watching with headphones, so couldn’t hear myself at all... 😆 I’m gonna watch it again with boyfriend, when he feels up to it. I feel like this is a show I will rewatch every now and then.

honestly if we got more I'd like it to be like episode 3 : just Crowley and Aziraphale going on (almost) dates and doing stupid things especially now that Aziraphale's acknowledged they were friends. until we get to the ineffable plan. For the kids I think it helped that the writing was clearly made with an actual child in mind Also Terry Pratchett is a master writer. I think Gaiman's better at script writing than he is at novel writing (his comics are better than his novels imo, Sandman is sooo good too)

I loved this show so much. I really enjoyed the first half of episode 3. Even though it was completely series original (as far as I remember, and I binged the book for the first time two days before she show aired), it was brilliant and enhanced the feeling you get for the relationship between Crowley and Aziraphael. I missed the Four Other Horsemen of the Apocalypse. So did Gaiman, according to what he wrote on Tumblr. It was a budget and time necessity to cut them.

Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Jasper Fford are my all time favorite author's. The TV adaptations of the Disc World where ok but the adaptation of Good Omens was brilliant. However in my opinion the best adaptation goes to Hitchhikers. The 80s BBC TV version was a joy. I hope one day they do a TV version of the Thursday Next series of books but I wouldn't be upset if they didn't as they are sublime as they are. Cheers 😀

As someone who didn't read the book and started watching the show off of ads, I have to say I loved it. The only complaint I could possibly think of would be that I kind of thought Agnes' and the witchfinder's descendants were a bit uninteresting after a while and I felt that they were only there (spoiler warning) to deter the nuclear threat in the end. They didn't really contribute to the story as much as I wanted them to, which is sad since I really wanted to see what became of both lineages. Not sure if they had more to do in the book. Thought that their important parts could have been meshed with the older and loony witchfinder and the Charlton instead. Still though, it was so fun to watch!!

I only managed to read the book eight days before the show came out. I bought it for kindle 2 or 3 years ago and just couldn't find the time to read it before May this year. I am glad I read the book first, weirdly enough, mainly because I don't actually know if I would have watched the show otherwise. I mean, I'm a massive fan of Neil Gaiman's books but until Good Omens I couldn't find a screen adaptation that didn't completely wreck the tone of his work. Good Omens did make me ridiculously happy. It's clear to see from the get-go that it was a labour of love. It was well-paced, it was beautifully shot and brilliantly acted. Michael Sheen and David Tenant just stole the show though. Funnily enough, when the last episode ended I kind of felt like I'd just sat through a really well-done stage play; I seriously, genuinely wanted the cast to all appear on stage and take a bow with linked hands so that the audience could give them their applause.

Beautiful summary. I re-read the book for this adaptation. I could only recall the vaguest of random plot points: 'Don't buy betamacks', and something about four more horsemen. But, it left me with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye. I wasn't sure whether I was seeing it pop up so much because it was good. Or algorithms thought I was interested in it. I'd love to see a Neil Gaiman adaptation of some other books, Terry Pratchett's 'Nation' springs to mind, or 'Maurice and his amazing educated rodents'.

Agreed! Terry Pratchett was an amazing author, and everyone should give him a try. Just... maybe don’t start with The Colour of Magic, no matter what you think is the ‘proper’ way to read a series. Come back to it, for sure, but start with either one of his stand alones (Good Omens is very much his style, despite being a joint project), or one of the other early Discworld books. Mort, Equal Rites, and Guards! Guards! are great starting points, and much truer to the tone of the later novels.
@Daelyas

@@gnu740 Thats not untrue... even if I like Color of Magic. It is definitively a "finding his feet / finding his authorial style" kind of book. On the reverse end his last few books leaned a bit on the "sappy" end of the spectrum. They lacked his usual "bite". But the legacy he left is an amazing one nonetheless. I have lost track of how many times I have read all of his books. Favorite ones personally? Uff... "Jingo" maybe? Or "Small Gods"? He’s like the king who’s right for the job because he doesn’t want to be. He’s not gonna do this for Doctor Who. This is special.

And I really take exception to the equating showrunning of Doctor Who with "Indulging his inner fanboy." It's all art, whether it's painting, or writing, or creating innovative television. It's just a different medium. And the world would better for what direction he would take Doctor Who in, just like it is better for his next novel. Except Doctor Who would reach more people. And it's not like he'd go straight into it, Chris is good for I assume a few more years yet. Missing some of his family life is the price of being Neil Gaiman. I would actually say read the book first. There are a few scenes and a few characters that didn't make it into the adaptation that would have been fun to see but don't detract from the whole by their absence plus an explanation as to why Queen is always playing in Crowley's car. Conversely, the characters and story elements, particularly those adding to Crowley and Aziraphale's back story that were added made the show different enough to give those who know the book backwards something new to enjoy. I think the additional material would be missed more than that which was excised. Nothing against Frances McDormand, who did a good job but I think God would have been better with an English accent. Kathy Burke would have been my first pick.

"I love Tennant but Michael Sheen true MVP" was pretty much my whole take as well. Deeply disappointed I can't find his theater stuff, only TV. Although the series had new stuff from the novel and everyone's characterization WAS changed - but it was subtle and perfect and the point still stood so I have nothing to complain about. Like, book!Crowley would never have a bloody throne in his flat and book! Aziraphale wasn't that sweet... But the show versions were incredibly well written and perfection and the whole thing was adapted, so it all fits. I think Gaiman said that it's like "seeing a play of the novel" and yeah, it is. And yess, absolute happiness.

aw i got so excited seeing how much you enjoyed it! i agree that sheen's performance really stood out, and to me part of it was because of how different his aziraphale is from the novel. that unadulterated sweetness and neurosis and "you go too fast for me crowley" repression is so Nice in a very cynical media landscape because his softness is validated. but personally especially being So attached to the novel (tied with pride and prejudice for my favorite book) i found the Them really disappointing? they felt really underdeveloped, and i worry that the emphasis on aziraphale and crowley and elevating them to main characters rather than large figures in an ensemble did a disservice to most of the other subplots. but overall i just adored the show. like flaws and all it was the most magical thing to see a book i've loved for almost 10 years come to life in almost as perfect a way as i can realistically expect

The one thing that I think didn't work was that they made the relationship Adam had with his foster father (and the relationship with his real dad) the lynchpin of the whole thing. But we never really see a lot of scenes or evidence that Adam and his dad bonded in any way. So that felt kind of empty. Also, the final plot points with the consequences for Crowley and Azurafel was not in the book but a welcome surprise for those of us who know the books very well. I did not the twist coming and it was great!

I generally agree that the "what-am-I-talking-about" quality was mostly missing from Agnes' prophecies - though that would have been harder to follow onscreen than it was in print. I should give a shout-out to the one mangled prophecy that I do recall: "In December 1980, an Apple shall rise no man can eat. Invest thy money in Master Jobbes's machine and good fortune will tend thy days," which as a bonus does not come from the book.

Neil actually said Terry and him always wanted to write a second novel, and they actually had made up the story. While filming he said he would consider doing that story in a second season (but that would be the end). However after spending so many years producing this - in my opinion - perfect adaption, he doesn't think he could do a second season with the same passion and then rather not do it at all. So, good guess there on your end. :) Second thing, Terry was Neils mentor, and Neil showed Terry the scripts, while he was writing them up to the point Terry was too far gone to be able to work on it anymore. He loved Terry dearly and it was very important to Neil to make this Terry's story. There is this beautiful one-hour interview of Neil's online, where he talks about the making of Good Omens and Terry. So second good guess on your end :) A fun fact, I started reading Terry's books in 1994, and on the back of the cover there is a quote by a newspaper saying that Terry is the Douglas Adams of Fantasy... so you are not the only one seeing it :) Thank you for giving Good Omens such a good review. It was certainly my highlight this year, being disappointed by so many other movies and shows. I'm glad the apocalypse worked out as I had hoped :)

Yet I also found that I would love Micheal Sheen being Aziraphale. I cant pick a favorite. I love them both and now I know how much of a good actor David is and Im so happy Micheal is getting more known because of his role as Aziraphale. This series too makes me so happy when I get involved with it. Be it fanart, fan video, rewatching the series or even reading the script book. I adored the adaptation. I signed up for Prime the moment they announced it was being made, and had been dreading it ever since. But it was so, so good... As far as the styles go, I felt like Gaiman adapted his parts more freely, and kept PTerry's as faithful as possible. Reading it, you can kinda notice when authors change a lot of times (specially considering that they wrote it as a way to make eachother laugh, always trying to "outfunny" the previous one)... The adaptation leaving out things felt (in a weird turn for someone as annoying about adaptations as me) like a nice wave to the book readers, as the new stuff. Every time Queen played, it felt like an inner joke shared by thousands of people. The one things I really missed (SPOILER ALERT) were Agnes' interferences later on, and that inexplicable certainty we get to, at the end of the book, that Aziraphale seemed sweet and awkward, but was actually the badass, as Crowley seemed cool and aloof, but was actually a big dramatic mess. The series does do that, in its way, but still... But, like you said, this is the uttermost nitpicking possible. Gaiman did a brilliant job adapting the text, and the series is a delight from begining to end. I already have this book as a go-to when trying to get people to read either author, and now the series came as an added asset (and it can be researched as many times as I reread the book, now).
