I've always loved The Beach Boys' music since I was a kid, but it was only a few years ago when I truly realized the magnitude of their musical genius, much of it attributed to the mind of Brian Wilson. The story of how he tried to break away from his band's easygoing pop sound with Pet Sounds, along with his personal struggles along the way, is equal measures inspiring and heartbreaking. The more I bettered my understanding of music production and arrangements, the more drawn in I was to Wilson's method, culminating in this rendition of my favorite Beach Boys tune, Good Vibrations.
This Gothik Serpent version is more researched compared to other songs I've done. In addition to the original recording, I examined live performances of the song, Brian Wilson's solo band version, and the movie Love & Mercy which depicts how the song was recorded. I incorporated various elements of all these and added a few updates of my own to form what I hope is a fitting update of this classic tune for the 2020s.
