The part where Chuckie realizes Will has left is always my favorite part. He is sad and happy all in one then you got the awesome Robin Williams line at the end.
I love how his best, realest, and closest friends - the ones he planned to grow old living down the street from - are all genuinely happy that he took his ticket and got the fuck out of there. They all wanted so much more and better for him; they didn’t wanna hold him back/down there in South Boston with them and their mediocre (but still honorable) lives. They wanted him to have all the kinds of better that a human being can have in his/her life; and to transcend all of that place, as he was more than able to do with the level of mega-genius that he had. They loved him unconditionally; and through that love, they wanted him to leave them behind and spread his *huge* wings and just go fuckin flying all over this simple little world already. It takes a next-level degree of best-friend love to want your buddy to leave you behind and do what he was born to do, instead of stickin it out through life with you.
Exactly you get it. chucky is the truly his best friend. he wanted him to give up on him so he wont hold him back he wanted the best for him even if that means leaving him and his friends.
god don 1 its a film exactly. a film made by real people of the real world expressing real emotions directing a film lol you missing the point of movies
I can't think of any logical way there could be a sequal to this movie. This is Will's defining moment. The moment he chooses to go after what he can instead of being satisfied with a mediocre life. Part of storytelling is asking yourself: Is this the most interesting story of my character's life?
The “Son of a bitch. He stole my line” was improvised on the spot by Robin Williams. Matt Damon said Williams did about 15 takes of this scene. He only said this line once, in the middle of all the takes he would do for this scene, and never said it again afterwards. It was decided to use this take because it was the best one from all the takes.
@@MidwestFarmToys there’s some arguments as to how many takes. Damon was there on the set as well to read the lines Robin is reading so he could react at the right time. But the bottom line is in the middle of however many takes it took to do that scene, Robin just said that on the spot with no warning to anyone and the director liked that take enough to put it in the movie. I know this response is late, but just for some context as to why Damon said the scene was shot about 15 times.
@@antraxxslingshots I get the sense a lot of Robin's lines were improvised, finding better things to say than the script - he's just that good. Most notable is the scene where he told Will about his wife farting in her sleep, nobody was expecting that.
It must have taken a lot of effort for Affleck to put those mixed emotions on his face at the same time: jubilation that his best friend actually listened to him and left without a goodbye conflicting with the sad realization that he'll probably never see his best friend again. I know lots of people rip on his acting these days, but damn he was excellent in this movie.
@@BlaneNostalgia Exactly He was a friend so good that he wanted what was best for Will, even if that meant that he wouldn't get to see Will ever again. That's true brotherly love.
Give me a good story and interesting well acted characters we can relate with and care about. Give me that over mindless special effects. This movie is pure quality from beginning to end
this movie is overrated. the whole premise of the movie is bullshlt. Will being able to solve in seconds a problem that took professors years to solve breaks the movie for me. Everything else is based on that premise (the huge genius of Will) so it's... weak.
ArbiterDan the thing is, there are quite literally people out there with that same kind of potential. You may harbor your doubts, but this movie is not as unrealistic as you may believe.
It's actually not bullshit. There are people (they are incredibly rare) who have insights that even leaders in their respective fields can't see. This entire story was essentially inspired by Ramanujan & Hardy -- Hardy being one of the greatest mathematicians of the early 20th century and, by Hardy's own account, Ramanujan far surpassed him.
That note change at 1:51 is so good. It happens at the exact moment that Ben’s expression switches: the moment he realizes his best friend has gone without even a goodbye, and it’s a brief moment of sadness before it turns into genuine happiness.
It was acted perfectly by Affleck i think. You can totally see the Stages: 1) Oh my god, he is really gone 2) damn, my friend left me...really sad 3) realizing thathis wish for Will came true so he is really happy for him. They can be sure they will never ever forget each other anyway, even if the see or hear nothing of the other for the rest of their lives.
@@nicolacruz3537 Because that is how Affleck hoped it would be one day, it was a call back to an earlier scene in the movie, just like the note was to Robin Williams.
I was 3 when this came out, and I’d go far enough to say it’s the greatest movie of all-time. I’d love to see and hear the applause it got in the theaters.
2:55 can we just talk about how haunting the end of this movie is? The final lines belong to Robin Williams, while Elliot Smith sings "Miss Misery." What a perfect song that Elliott wrote just for this film, and what a perfect line that Robin improvised. Two absolute legends who were lost way too soon, here at the peak of their talent, conspire to make those final shots of a car driving westward, through the Allegheny pines so much more poignant. In the years since this movie was made, that's all taken on a real unexpected gravity.
the look of comprehension on Chuckie's face reminds me of that line from Shawshank "Some birds aren't meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice But still, the place you live in is that much more grey."
I got to see that look in person once. Those bright eyes. We made eye contact on a crowded street in passing and as I realized it was him, just nodded warmly with a smile, and he did the same.
It's funny how it suddenly hits you sometimes. It hit me out of the blue when I realized she was The One. I immediately booked a flight from L.A. to Ohio and proposed that weekend. We just celebrated our 30th. I hope for the rest of you that you get to experience the same joy in your lives. I realize I got lucky and not everybody gets Happily Ever After. But you might.
3:14 I like to think that Will actually did precisely that. Becoming a therapist, helping people, wounded children like him and Sean. Giving them the strength to overcome their trauma and allow themselves to grow.
This movie truly shows the beauty of friendship. Though it must've hurt Chuckie that Will left without saying anything (which he always wished for) but he is ultimately happy because he can think that Will would be somewhere he truly belongs rather than ending his life in a place that didn't give him the space to shine. Absolutely one of my favourite movies. And the fact that Damon and Affleck are best friends makes me feel that such a bond can truly exist.
If you think that, you must have watched a different movie than I did. That's EXACTLY what he wanted for him. If a best friend took my honest heartfelt advice, I would be eternally grateful and happy for him.
That would take away from the beauty of this scene, in my opinion. The way things turned out, Will is gone to find love and never coming back. The rest is for the audience to think about.
I was wondering too. i like to think it is Elliot Rodgers, the guy who was 1 year older than the main character here, and who (in real life) never had a gf and did a murder/suicide. I can relate to the no gf thing.
Elliott Smith, one of the greatest songwriters the world has ever seen and like Robin Williams, was taken too soon. For all of you asking who he is, look him up. He’s a true one of a kind and his music will hauntingly make you feel things no other musician can.
You know when the "Girl" is right to change your life. It's an amazing feeling and 30 years later still going strong. How many times I think what if I did not make the move, every day.
I don't see what's so "bittersweet" about this ending. If anything, it's just sweet because Matt Damon's character Will Hunting finally realizes what he wants out of life and decides to take action by going after it.
You can see the bittersweet in Ben Affleck's scene with the various facial expressions he shows as the realization hits him. He realizes that Will left, and while he is happy about it, he's sad that his best friend won't be there with him every day. That that part of their life together is over forever. And he's suppressing that bittersweet emotion with that awkward smile as he walks back to the car and tells the rest of them that Will is gone.
Because he left the closest people in his life up to that point and the place he was born and raised. New beginnings, though necessary, are always bittersweet.
Will could be the only person in the world to beat the house with his math skills. He gets himself effin rich and now he and Skylar are millionaires lol
The part that always gives me chills is when the little guitar solo notes to “Miss Misery” start up right after Robin Williams says his line. Like the topping on the cake for a perfect ending
Elliott Smith deserved a lot more acclaim than he got. Absolutely beautiful artistry, I don't know how any other songs would fit as well as his did throughout the movie.
@@onnak I would love to get some his vinyl records. I have never heard any of his other songs. I know I could stream them but I want to experience them on a record player first.
@@Caltops78 you should totally listen to his stuff. Some of the best if not the best music I’ve heard. He’s got plenty of unreleased tracks on RU-vid as well as stuff on streaming services
@@Helsinki40268 I know! I keep seeing Elliot Smith’s records at the shop and I always pass him up. There is just so much music to collect it gets overwhelming. Next time I go to the shop I’ll pick up one his albums no matter which one it is. Thanks for the push
@@Caltops78 if you want more simple guitar and vocals, check out earlier stuff like self titled or Roman candle. His later stuff has a much beatle esc sound with a lot more instrumentation. I would suggest starting off with either/or Or XO for your first!
I just love how Ben's expression completely tells about his feelings. Like he is sad that his friend left but the satisfaction that his friend listen to him and went on for good.
I love this scene. My favorite part is when Robin Williams turns over the note and it says "... tell him sorry, but I've got to go hunt some good will!"
So it obviously didn’t work out between him and skyler so he came back trained as an assassin and became Jason bourne, in the mean time his best friend is running around in a black suit calling himself batman. Just shows you never know where life is going to take you
It had to be difficult for Will. He needed to be challenged intellectually and as intelligent as Skylar was, she couldn't keep up with Will's level of genius and she knew it. But damn, the girl really loved him warts and all. Will finally figured out that counts for something. Maybe she's not perfect but he's never going to find perfect. So at least he found someone who really loved him.
@@moeball740 yeah, I think it is more about taking the risk than actually succeding. Even though the goal of this risk is to be happy and finding the one, the healing is in the attempt to avoid going "through your entire life without ever having to really know anybody".
For those don’t understand the ending it is clear that will finally detached from society to live happily by pursuing his own personal interests he is more happy taking down the road even alone because he knows finally nothing holds him back
The one thing that I always loved about Robin Williams is his ability to do solid drama. While I did enjoy his comedy films, I felt he was always great doing drama. Good Will Hunting, The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society, are just a few of his best films. The best part? I will always remember him for his role from Mork & Mindy, whom I grew up watching during the 70's and 80's. He's just one of those rare actors that comes along who can make you laugh, make you cry, make you stand up and look at yourself in the mirror. he is, forevermore, a consummate actor.
After a lifetime of getting bullied and beaten up, he just wanted some affection. Is that so bad? He wasn't lazy and didn't lack ambition but when the people who should love, nourish and support you are absent ... Affection and love is all you ever want. Hugs and some warmth. He was just sad. He just needed some kindness.
Remember guys, your real friends are the ones that want to see you be better than you are everyday. If they’re not making you be better, or believing in your potential to do so, they aren’t your friends. This scene is amazing.
One of the best movies ever made with Matt and Robin as leading roles hands down. The "Its not your fault" scene is one of my favorites in the movie. Brings a tear to my eye everytime I watch it. #ripRobin
the most powerful part of the film happens in this scene....and its not anything that happens....look at Will's eyes as he looks up at robbin William's character through window....its something you never see in his eyes in any other scence...it's a one second shot...you see hope/happiness
Deep down all men want to hop in a kicked down rusty car and drive 3000 miles to be together with the love of his life... But things is that many of us dont have that special someone
I miss Robin Williams so much. So much. When I die I don’t need to know who shot Kennedy, have an hours long conversation with Einstein. I just want to say “Thank you” to Robin Williams. Then I’ll be set.
I always imagined what Will would say to Skylar when he sees her again. Something like, “I know people think I’m smart, but I’m not. I’m an idiot. And a liar. I do love you. I just needed to come tell you that.”
That Smile at 2:04 said a lot. The part where Chuckie realizes Will has left is always my favorite part. He is sad and happy all in one then you got the awesome Robin Williams line at the end.
Robin Williams was great indeed, but I never thought Ben Affleck was right for this role. He was too pretty and tried too hard to make up for it. Even his smirk in this scene was as overdone as his street Bostonian. He looked too much like Elvis here which ruined it for me.
I agree, Robin is brilliant in this movie, Matt, Ben and Minnie are also excellent as well. Even Casey was really good even though it would be another 10 years or so before he got more widespread recognition, becoming an Oscar winner himself for Manchester By The Sea (2016).
Best ending ever. I mean, I'm SO glad that Will allows himself to be vulnerable that I don't even care if he gets the girl or not (I hope he does, but that's not the question). My favourite movie !
Will’s car, which was given by his buddies, and to which he uses to drive across country and pursue his dreams or what he wants, symbolizes that we can not pursue our dreams and goals without the help and support of other people.
Chasing a woman and leaving college was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Don't let this movie romanticize not following your commitments through. Don't use this movie to justify coping out on your future for a fleeting of pleasure...
I want to build this channel off of positive vibes and love, and maybe I’m just in a bad place right now, but don’t throw your own dreams away for a maybe. Sure, he was technically the instigator of the break up, but that means that the girl has every right to have moved on in her life away from him. It bothers me that people mess around with people like that, but at least he is attempting to set things how he feels they should be and is finding closure. Tl;dr I sometimes wish I could not have feelings and be a killer sci fi film cyborg who seduces her prey but even I know that’s messing with people’s emotions and that shit ain’t fun kids.
Huss That's what I did, I did throw what I had at that time away for a maybe. Didn't work for me, and honestly probably isn't realistic for most people. And I'm a firm believer in to each their own but it's people romanticizing this option that bothers me. I just don't want to see people ending up hurt over what they thought was right. Sometimes the best intentions leave us with the worst consequences. No all the time, and I know I'm contradicting myself here but you can't and shouldn't try to protect yourself to a point of not experiencing what could be.
Huss I am pretty much a boring aloof toast. And let me tell you, being distant and apathetic is a great way to chase everyone away slowly, so slowly you don't even realize their gone. It's a slow kind of death, and a great never ending cycle of distancing as a coping mechanism only for you to never be able to come back, and only ever pushing yourself further away from the people that all you want to do is love and care for.
Yeah, I won't lie it's getting more tempting just to distance myself more and more from everyone and avoid getting attached after being hurt, but the reality is I know that I still have people I care for and want the best for. I guess what's important is to remember that it's okay to be a bit cautious, but it's important to love and care for others too
Huss I must apologize for bringing my calloused world view to your channel. You seem very nice and I don't want to soil your channel with my angry rants about nothing. Only you know what's best for you.
It's quite jarring to see Academy Award winner Casey Affleck in that vest top running around. What an ending, perfectly encapsulates the themes of the film and teaches something that is so easy to forget; the people who love you are there and want YOU to succeed. Just so beautiful and touching and why the fuck does it matter if he comes back and succeeds or if it works out with the girl? For the first time in his life he is choosing, he is liberated and can make mistakes
Chuckie is a once in a lifetime kind of friend. Side note; I know it’s a long shot, but does anyone know the name of the Irish tune that is playing when Chuck walks back to the car? I love it ☘️
My son, who was born in 2002, watched this movie with me and told me it was the best movie he has ever seen. This movie was made 5 years before he was born but resounds with his generation like no other film I know.
I saw this movie the day before my hs graduation for the first time ever and this song will always remind me of this girl i met I liked in the summer after graduation we were cool but my dumbass wasted a year and a half being scared to admit my feelings towards her and eventually she moved on and found someone else and never spoke to me again. Listening to the song hurts sometimes smh. If you like someone go after them and don’t be afraid because you’ll end up like me living in regret.
Oh, I don't know that. Let me tell you what I do know. Every day I come by to pick you up. And we go out we have a few drinks, and a few laughs and it's great. But you know what the best part of my day is? It's for about ten seconds from when I pull up to the curb to when I get to your door. Because I think maybe I'll get up there and I'll knock on the door and you won't be there. No goodbye, no see you later, no nothin'. Just left. I don't know much, but I know that
1:14 can anyone id that 5-point badge on the door? I feel like it's significant, as it's the last thing before the credits shot. I ran it through google images, looked at army insignia, and pulled up searches for crest, fort, symbol, etc. To me it looks like a golfer's in the middle of the circle.
I loved this movie's message too. It basically tells you that true happiness doesn't always mean having some high-end job, but pursuing what you're truly passionate about.
Both the lead actor (Robin) and original score singer (Elliott Smith) killed themselves years later. Sometimes madness is apart of being great I guess. #irony
This is one of the most famous movie endings of all time about a character finally moving onto a better life… But my favorite part is still Casey Affleck‘s character moving up a rank to shotgun. That was his only dream.
