Good old Sir Stanley Matthews paying until he was 50! Sir Bobby Charlton went till he was 46 too. Only Helmchen, Panenka and Buffon came close to playing so late at 45. Mind you, there is actually a player who is _currently active_ who blows those guys out of the water! A Japanese striker called Kazuyoshi Miura. The dude is *57 years old* and is still playing professional football! He currently plays in the Portuguese second division for U.D Oliveirense, on loan from Yokohama. He started his career back in 1986! That's a 38 year career! He played 89 times for Japan scoring 55 goals, and retired from international football 24 YEARS AGO! What a legend!

With improved physical training ,professional footballers career now spans over 20 years . I remember some 20 years back 30 years footballers were already considered veterans ,nowadays footballers can still play at the highest level even at the age of 40 years

The Charlton part is wrong. He retired in 1975 at the age of 38 whilst player/manager of Preston North End. He then played for Waterford FC in Ireland, was still technically retired, and then played a game for something like 3 different Aussie clubs as they were just forming their league. He was also technically still retired. You can retire from a sport professionally and still play it. For example if an ex-pro retires, and only 2 years later plays in a charity game, it doesn’t mean they came out of retirement to play, they are still very much retired.

Not really. Nowadays, top-level football is run by corporations. If you get old and can’t perform at the same level, you’re out. It’s not always a matter of age.
