Due to the ongoing faults, and more serious safety concerns, with the Ecoflow Power Kit I have decided to remove it from my van build and replace it with a safe, reliable and conventional 12v power system.
For more info on the EcoFlow Power Kit safety issues watch VB42, my previous video to this.

I believe that Ecoflow are making early suggestions that you installed it incorrectly. Which with your knowledge in this area of tech would be laughable had its potential consequences being life threatening. So many RU-vidrs had been gifted with numerous versions of these devices which subscribers were spending hard earned money on but at least you have the balls to come back and speak out when issues arise. Good on you John lad.

This is so true. Ecoflow would appear to have brought this product to market before it is ready, being my simplistic take on it. I am away in my van using the poweroak ac200p to power my needs. After what is easily less than 100 charges, it only now charges to 53% from the mains. I am presently going around the houses with the sellers too who seem conveniently not to be able to grasp the simple issue. Best part of £2k what would appear to be down the pan. As for auto electricians I took my van for a minor bit of rewiring and the technician had never even seen one of these before. Aren't these pieces of kit supposed to be good for 10000 charges or so we are told? To be fair to John he always tells it like it is and I would take his technical knowledge over any of the people selling these all in 1 solutions.

Hello John, Long time subscriber. I am in Australia. I fitted a full Renogy system in my van. 3 x 170 amphour lithium batteries, a 3000-watt inverter/charger, 200 watt solar panel and a 40 amp solar charge controller. I have never had a single issue with my system and have NO gas in my van. I have a full electric hot water system and use standard domestic electrical cooking items including an induction hotplate. I cannot fault Renogy. In 2 years, my batteries have dropped 1% of their total capacity, so I'm beyond happy.

Very interesting. I am so pleased that you have taken the time to report this. The plug and play concept is excellent, but if the standards aren't up to the job, then another solution has to be found. A friend of mine runs a shop here in Germany converting vans. This week he had the system on his test bench. He told me he is sending it back after just two days of testing, because the display panel was sucking too many amps and the system was down to 54% after a day and that without anything attached to it like a fridge, etc. The EcoFlow support appears to be much worse than most IT support, or for that matter most other support setups anywhere. Useless and pointless. Why can't someone in the UK design and build such a unit with the plug and play concept??? Thanks John! Chris from Derbyshire living in the south of Germany.

I’ve commented on several RU-vidrs videos who get sponsored by Ecoflow that the reason they use them is because they are free. You can build a better system yourself John with a quality lithium setup as I have with not one seconds problem. Tried and tested plus no doubt cheaper too. Well done for calling them out.

Their customer service definitely implied they’re going for the sloping shoulders not-our-fault approach. Such a shame. No apology? No compensation quote ready. This could be very damaging for them simply because the van building / van life community seems so close. Hopefully they’ll come back to you with better news. And soon! Thanks for sharing John.

If you are not aware of the 18th edition wiring regs all you van builders should be, in relation to the derating of cables and where they run. For this reason competency and safety really do go hand in hand. So please folks a cable only shows it’s capacity in free air. As it gets covered the cable gets significantly de rated. In no way does this let off eco flow btw. That was an error to the point of negligence . Great channel btw

Thanks for the update John, I think you're doing the right thing. There's too much at stake to have potentially dangerous electrical gear in the van, particularly when you have so much lithium battery stored energy on board linked into a faulty control system. It would be different if they were paying you to test run the system but to come back and question the installation when clearly there's been a high resistance failure in the cable mid-length speaks volumes. I expect they are trying to get to the bottom of the crappy cable bodge because that will have massive ramifications but they should have been all over you with help given your visibility in the vanlife and wider technology community. I doubt they will share too much information with you now, as its commercially sensitive. But, it will be good to hear your final conclusions when it's all sorted out. 👋

Customer service is paramount, John would of contacted EF way before the video went live giving them plenty of opportunity to respond , John you sir have done the right thing and inform the public of the hazards of bad wiring in what is a very expensive fire waiting to happen, as with most kit us van builders purchase , The components brought and the trust put in companies involved that there products are 1000% safe when fitted correctly , Im so glad of all the Victron equipment and the fantastic customer service ive experienced But i agree that Renogy do have good combo units, and there inverters are way better that the size of the multi-plus. Im really gutted for you john having to re wire and undo hours of work, Best wishes Mate. 👍👍👍

I used to work for a cable sub contactor and the way the earth has been put together is beyond shocking. If the cable needs to be joined then it has to be spliced correctly ensuring every strand is clamped together, but your right about the guadge wire, seems a bit thin. If ecoflow have a sub contractor who makes their cables, then someone needs to be held accountable. Simply swisting some of the strands together and covering with heat shrink is far from safe.

WOW I don't call that a response from a meant to be reliable company with a brilliant product. I'm glad that you have decided to replace this equipment with equipment that you know works and works well. The problem I see now is that they will be trying to blame the install instead of rectifying their processes, and I don't see any apology coming soon! I think it may be down to lawyers to sort out and any compensation you do get will be based on their Risk Factor and not yours. Great to see that you have now come to a sensible conclusion as this would always be playing on your mind. Look forward to see your Renogy install instead of Victron.

Renogy 50A charger is great. Just add a relay (I use 60A rated) to the PV feed controlled by the IGN feed (in a sprinter use the D+ connection, which is live when engine is running), to cut off the PV and get full 12V 50A from the alternator via appropriately sized cable connected to starter battery positive terminal.
@jinx547
@jinx547 Год назад
Good idea! I was looking for comments for clarification for what John said as I understood it as Max 25A DC-DC and 25A PV not a floating 50A between sources.
@SuperClotted
@SuperClotted Год назад
@@jinx547 the DCC50S has an interesting charging logic. Worth reading the online manual if you’re considering buying. One of its biggest logic limitations is easily fixed with a relay (as above). Eg if in the UK on a cloudy day, and power from PV is low, perhaps generating less than 25 watts of PV (~2A @ 12V). The DCC50S would still limit ALT to 25A. But if you cut off PV entirely, you can use 50A from the alternator, if your alternator is safely capable, to charge your leisure battery.

I can’t believe the way they treating you! Firstly - even if an electrician had done your installation, the fault would still have occurred. An electrician was not going to cut the cable cover to see if a) any joins in the cable has been made or b) to check the correct cable had been used for the installation. Do they no realise that this could have killed you!!! 🤬. We just installed a Renology lithium battery in our motorhome - it arrived within 36 hrs of ordering it. Fingers crossed you can get something in place in time for the NEC (we”ll swing by and say hi at some point - we’re there 23 - 25). Looking forward to seeing how this progresses with ECOFlow 🤔.

Hi John, so this is going to sound like blatant promotion, but could I suggest that you contact Merlin electrical, Exeter. Speak to Tom, or to be honest anyone there, these guys are helpful and have been there, whenever we had questions for our build. They design and fit many systems for the emergency services, military, etc. To say they know what they are doing, would be a massive understatement. We told them our electrical requirements and they designed a system with a wiring diagram, and supplied the parts we asked for, with no pressure to get everything from them. We did our own installation, when it came to the 125mm3 cable 9:38 for the inverter we were struggling, we gave them a call and they supplied the two short pieces we needed and crimped connections on for us. I cannot recommend these guys enough.

A separates build like you're now proposing, although more component parts, allows for easier replacement of individual parts should an element fail. Plus it also appears you can be certain the cables you install are free from fault initially... Renogy kits looks great value and I'm sure you'll give us warts and all reviews. That is shocking and when eco flows are installed with all the kit they use 50mm so why use smaller in plug and play. You helped them so much I hope you get compensated I'm really looking forward to renoenergy or wot it is. Love the videos

Bloody hell that sucks, seems and looks well made equipment. Horrible that feeling when spend a load of money and no support if it’s busted, hope all goes well sorting the next system out👍🏼. The Renogy REGO system looks interesting, wondering if will be available in the Uk at some point, anyway take care. Sam

We're only hearing one side of this, and after the simple window debacle you have to wonder..... Also, most suppliers only recommend installation by their own people or qualified engineers. Plenty of campers/vanners using ecoflow products with no issues.

I think the cable join is terrible but was the cabling on these kits outsourced. I have their delta range power station and solar panels and they have been really popular. I haven't had a problem but a technical enquiry from me took about 10 days for a response. Not convinced on there customer care but ive heard the same about Renogy.
@davidmolyneaux5062
@davidmolyneaux5062 Год назад
Edward, maybe a qualified installer would have checked the cable and found the fault before fitting. Who knows?? Or maybe other (cheap) components in the set up have contributed to an overload?
@KeithM239
@KeithM239 Год назад
There is no dispute that the state of that cable is terrible and there customer service is looking like it could be similar. However, yes it COULD have caused a fire, which in turn COULD have burnt your van down, which if you were in it COULD have been fatal. But it didn't! So, if you have shown them that bit of a scorch mark on your floor and then said as you did in the video that it nearly killed you and nearly burnt your van down, that's a bit more than a slight exaggeration. I appreciate that your emotions may be running high after all the time, effort and money you have put into the system, but let's keep things in perspective a little.

Hi John, I have a Renogy system that I have put into my van with 3 x lithium 100 AH batteries, DC to DC charger and a 3000 watt inverter. Ignore the hub as I have had loads of problems with it. I also have 2 x BT2 Bluetooth devices connected. Recently installed the Renogy One that has enabled me to monitor input and output using my Wi-Fi system. Great system at a great price. Customer service is also very good.

You have made my day to hear the word 'Renogy'! I have all Renogy and it has been great. If you use their batts no stupid shunt needed either. I've been chewing the fat on getting the M1 display panel so would be interested to see that if your getting one. I trust EVERYBODY is going to abstain from visiting Ecoflow if the are at NEC. I used the Victron lynx distributor with mine for neatness of cables as they don't make anything like that.

I use Renogy (except DC DC as it's a faff) and it's great kit. Not sure on the M1, I'd prefer double the switches on it to make it really useful !

@@andrewmillerphotography Agreed, and also a shame it is not a little backwards compatible as it wont work with my DCDC charger or the 2000w inverter. but will be OK with the batts and MPPT I have, so a bit hit and miss without some other expensive upgrades to current models.

Hey this is a plug and play system, they have manufactured the cables which are of an inferior quality. Why do you need a qualified electrician to plug in, they need to fully inspect there design and quality control. Maybe under there suggestion that we have a qualified electrician to plug in all domestic appliances. Take care.

Don't bother fitting such a tiny fuse board, it won't be enough. Appreciate your no nonsense review of the power, glad I don't have that fitted. The correct response from ecoflow should have been to send you a new cable and change their processes to never use cable joins and then contact customers and check and replace joined cables.

That’s great John, We have 2 x Renogy 50a DC + mppt charging 4 lead acids. Very simple, very fixable, works fantastic. If you don’t do all the graphs and monitoring and stuff then Victron is not needed. All you need is the battery meter. I have it mounted so I can see it when driving.

John, once you have ditched the EcoFlow, go back to the old fithful Victron kit. The benefit there is Victron have something called Venus OS which is an operating system for a Raspberry Pi single board computer. You can then add Node-Red which is part of Venus OS and allows you, through native Raspberry Pi relays to be able to electronically switch anything on or off and monitor and control pretty much anything.
@lucylovitt9583

And, for the uninitiated: where's that advantage over a switch please?

@Lucy Lovitt I am a liveaboard on a narrowboat and have a cat on board. For me and my connectivity, it allows me to be able to monitor and control every aspect of the boat from the power systems to the central heating and check the fuel levels etc. From anywhere either on or off the boat through my own private network rather than the normal victron portal. 👍

Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise because someday in the future one of the components will fail and you will be unlikely to easily replace it. You had good reliability with Ecotree batteries and various Victron components. You knew that all the wiring was correctly sized and connected. Your old system you could virtually replace the parts overnight. I think the Lost in Europe review is correct. I have a Jackery 1000 with two solar panels, I bought it because my previous van didn’t have solar and I used it as an electric hook up when off grid. The van has gone but I still have the Jackery. When off grid now the Jackery is used for the electric kettle, slow cooker and air fryer, all 900 watts. My current van has solar panels that keep the van fully charged. We also use the Jackery at home for charging laptops, tablets, phones etc. It’s handy because there are no cables across the floor. Yes it takes a while to charge the Jackery but in my case it doesn’t matter. The Jackery is handy for pumping the tyres up using a 12v pump as well as transferring the water to the van tank from an Aquaroll. This is where the Jackery type of kit is very useful but to run the whole van probably not.
