Goodbye Gas Tax, Hello Road Charge?

For more than a century, California, like other states, has used a tax on gasoline to pay for road construction and maintenance. But as revenue from the gas tax declines due to growing fuel efficiency and the increased popularity of hybrids and electric vehicles, the Golden State is exploring the idea of ending the state gas tax and instead charging drivers for the miles they travel. The more distance driven in a car or truck, the higher the tax would be.

They will never get rid of the gas tax. They are just going to pile on mileage fees. I already pay $850 a year for tags on my EV.

@@SaulSGonzalez No. My renewal just says what I must pay. Actually this year it was $830. Registration Fee $418 License fee $361 Special personalized plate fee $40 County district fees $11. You notice it's all fees? No vehicle tax.

I don't mind the research on Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT), which is what was being studied since 2017. I just want to be the one to vote on it see exactly where that money is going. Like the guys at 2:50, it feels like we're taxed for everything. And we still came into a budget deficit.

and what happens to vehicles from out of state? How do they get charged for the road tax? And how do they get tracked when entering and leaving the state, or do they get to use CA roads for free?
@SaulSGonzalez
@SaulSGonzalez 29 дней назад
That's an excellent point, and it still has to be figured out. One advantage of any state's gas tax is that you still have to pay it, even if just visiting from other another state. Another issue is how to handle federal and local gas taxes. Do they get changed as well?

There is a coalition of Western States that are meeting, as they are all looking from shifting away from the gas tax to a roach charge, and interoperability of their systems is on top of the agenda

Total electric vehicles could be taxed at non private recharge stations. If they are just plugging in at home, that is a different issue. Stop giving tax credits to EV buyers, that is double taxation for non ev buyers.
@squibbard
@squibbard 27 дней назад
Despite all of the hand-wringing and whining about paying taxes for road infrastructure, drivers aren't really even paying for the true cost of the roads because the shortfalls in gas tax and electric vehicle registration fees is made up for by taxes on people who don't drive (e.g. income tax).

@SaulSGonzalez In 1996 California asked us to let them to raze the gas tax to repair the roads. In stead they built walls. That same year they also asked if they raze bridge tolls from 50 cents to a dollar to retrofit the bridges, and we gave that to them as well, now it's 5 dollars.

Figure up how much is collected in gas tax per year. Now figure up how much is being spent on roads to repair and create new routes. Only a portion of this money is being used and the rest magically disappears…uhmmm sounds like theft to me.
@terrancecloverfield6791
@terrancecloverfield6791 27 дней назад
SB1 is where I'd defend that notion since its language strictly says the taxes collected, must only be used for road repair and maintenance. The problem is when SB1 gas tax revenue isn't enough since California wants to push electric cars and hybrids, want the consumer to shoulder the burden of more complex (and heavier) vehicles, but still want their tax revenue for other pet projects that can be categorized under road maintenance.
@squibbard
@squibbard 27 дней назад
Gas tax isn't pulling enough money in to maintain all of the road infrastructure, we're making up for it by deferring maintenance or pulling funds from other places (e.g. income tax).
@terrancecloverfield6791
@terrancecloverfield6791 27 дней назад
@@squibbard indeed....this is where I'll wear my red cap and say 'secure the border'. More people means more wear and tear. And if the tax revenue isn't matching the number of cars on the road and the totality of taxpayers, we're gonna come up short every day until our expenses overtake our tax revenue. It's such simple cash flow analysis but for reason, we're choosing not to point out the elephant in the room: illegal immigration. It's not wrong to think about the road charge, since EV RIF fees and hybrid cars reduces the tax revenue. But to think we have such little wiggle room in funds, yet they keep asking for more. ..

@Desertbiker617
@Desertbiker617 27 дней назад
Gas tax is used for road maintenance. If EVs use the same road that's paid from gas tax, then tax the road because EVs don't contribute. Common sense.
