Yeah it’s like a used car market these days. So many new ones and old ones on the market to consider 😀

Forget Cara; I’ll have to move to the EU so that I can opt out. 😂 But personally, I’m tired of chasing the latest trend or drama. All these platforms (and other businesses) start out all wholesome and then as they grow seem to have problems (real or imagined). RU-vid was all fun and crazy then it started getting rules then more rules (mostly because they have to survive in the real world too) and people started leaving for TikTok because it was wild and free now TikTok is trying to be more like RU-vid. It was the same with Twitter/X and Threads. I imagine the Instagram vs Cara thing will be about the same. Cara starts out as the cool, friendly thing then as they gain popularity, it will do something to cause drama and then Zybee or whatever the next thing is will show up.

(Joel) I lean on the same side as you do. If we get so concerned about all the external things, we will forget what we are here for in the first place, which is to learn to draw digitally. That’s where I believe we should refocus our energy too 🤷‍♂️😄 but it’s all love , and it makes for great conversations

Cara seems to be a great platform from what I can see. It's basically a like Instagram but is truly for artist to share their work but they are not allowing AI on the platform from what I understand. I joined last week and have stopped posting my drawings on Instagram.

I agree that instagram is a very bad place. I don’t use it anymore. But I’m not sure about another centralised app. It can be bought by some billionaire and that’s it. Decentralised apps like mastodon(twitter like) and pixelfed(instagram like) seems like the best choices.

I loved the part where you said "if AI is being trained on your art, then you're likely already a successful artist anyway." Great perspective man, that's definitely the attitude you want to send to your audience of novice artists. Artists have moved to Cara because it is currently a perceived place of safety, regardless of how it may grow or deteriorate in the future, and regardless of whether they are successful artists or not. I get the impression neither of you have thought too deeply about this topic and don't really care that much. It's super neat that the current state is benefiting you, but just shrugging your shoulders and saying "It's going to happen anyway" is a pretty lame stance. I get it's way easier to let monopolies roll right over you but if it's gonna happen anyway at least have a more exciting opinion about it.

I can’t tell if you are meaning the first paragraph sarcastically or not. However in response to the second part, I (James) would care if I felt it was actually a concern compared to to the other concerns of Ai. I think Ai will potentially create a real crisis amongst artists and creative industries, but I don’t think jumping to Cara is the answer personally. I speak from the point of view of an artist who feels that my actual art, my portfolio, isn’t that represented out there in the world, RU-vid represents me as a teacher, not an artist. If my actual portfolio was out there registering amongst the Ai enough to be replicated, then I’d take that over the current position where my surrreal/sci-fi portfolio is largely invisible in the world. If I could swap the current position and have my work seen, but the price would be that Ai steals my style, I’d take that deal. I’m sorry if my stance isn’t exciting, but I’m just giving my honest opinion and feel the buzz around the jump to Cara is highly unlikely to make a difference in the broader scheme of things. Anyway, we appreciate your time and comments. Maybe we didn’t explain ourselves as well as you’d like in the short time frame, it’s a big area for discussion and we’ll keep at it!

I (Joel) think it’s also important to remember that we are two normal guys too. Guys that will digest and come to our own conclusions. I did say there’s not much you can do and that’s true in this case. If instagram were the first to do this (creating an ai image training model) then the publicity might have stirred up enough controversy, to then stop it happening again. However Instagram is actually fairly late to this party, if you consider mid journey has been around for a long time, just to name one of many other programs/apps We must also remember that digital art doesn’t form a huge % of Instagram, enough that any sort of strike, of migration would see Instagram reverse, what you imagine, is a huge financial decision for them. My audience is mainly users completing tutorials to give them an escape, help with mental and physical issues. I don’t believe any of those people should be worried or scared about ai based on them simply completing our tutorials. They should be having fun, creating and completing those videos. There is a small % that go on to do their own work independently, which is a huge stepping stone and again I really don’t think those individuals should give mental energy, to fears like this, when they could channel energy into creativity I think this topic is fantastic for interesting conversations, just like this. We must always remember to listen to other’s thoughts, even if they differ from ours, and who knows maybe opinions change as a result.

@@TheSketchWave The internet isn't really set up to have meaningful discourse in the first place so it's hard to communicate in such an inorganic way. Definitely people shouldn't be concerned about AI coming FOR THEM specifically if all they're doing is completing your tutorials. It's kinda silly to be worried about that. Nonetheless we can be worried in principle, can consider the psychological impact of consuming this glut of generative art over time, and we can consider the longterm consequences of making so much of it so accessible so quickly. What is that gonna do to our perception of the value of art? What do you think? A handful of people are getting insanely rich as they exploit humanity's deep need to create and possess art while convincing people there's something creative about typing in a prompt window. At the very least we can be a little pissed off about that. A lot of my friends are concept artists and they're watching their careers go up in smoke. Where do we draw the line between being crying doomsday and just dismissing it all? I dunno honestly, it's hard. That so many people flocked to Cara so quickly is in an indicator that people care deeply about this.

Yes I think I can speak for both Joel and myself when I say we share many of your concerns too. We take it seriously, but just have a relaxed and jovial manner. We talk about much of what you are saying here in episode 4 - ‘Will AI replace digital artists.’ We aren’t on opposite sides on this overall.
