I also started my RU-vid Gardening Ch in 2011, but I was quite a bit older than you... Huw 🙂 I do agree that a garden is like an artwork that's always getting touched up and improved. All the best with your new garden canvas and upcoming book 👍😉
@selfsufficientme Wow good to see you leaving a comment .I watch your videos eagerly even though my area in Worcestershire is cool wet and windy very unlike your weather conditions and I love your humour .my daughter and sister moved to Australia sister in Melbourne daughter in Adelaide
You should be immensely proud - your regular videos have brought pleasure to thousands of people, put a smile on their faces and encouraged them to get out and about and enjoy their gardens. On to the next chapter!
Exactly, that's not a silly thing.... it is one highly recommend.... especially that in this case is about the land that became a garden, it is about Earth herself. Although I do not agree with this method of topping up compost and actually not growing the plants that much into the soil of the garden, I very much enjoyed watching your videos. So I thank you, your team and your garden for that and I hope to enjoy as much the secret garden.... hopefully with a bit more plants into the soil and a bit more 'disturbance' of it 😂 (because that sort of 'disturbance' is actually so good for the soil and the health of the planet herself)
I’ve just sold my home of 17 years and before I left I said farewell and thanked my garden for what it had produced for me and my family over the years 😊
This channel has long been my personal "gold standard" for all YT channels. I know some of what you do here stems from the fact that you have been a content creator for so long, but you have never fallen into the trend trap. That is what always kept me coming back. And when you have a video with "Goodbye" in the title, I know it isn't a click bait scheme. It's been fun and inspiring watching you and your garden grow. This was a fine tribute to everything you've done up until now, and I am very much looking forward to what I will learn from you in your new garden!
@@HuwRichardsme, too! You were such a cute boy! You’re still cute but it was that boy who got me in the garden & helped me to be ok even if all my seeds died! ;) I learned the adventure of experimenting and the fun that this could be! Thank you for helping & encouraging so many of us who might have never had a chance to pick a pea otherwise! ❤
Same here. Long time viewer. Your videos & garden have always blown me away. Hoping one day I might have one or be part of one. Keep up the amazing work & best of luck in the new garden. Also feel free to do any shoutouts for volunteers 🙏🌍🌱
1. What a great Dad! You do right by honoring him and I am sure you are a blessing to him as well. 2. A project as large as this is like art. Never really done. 3. Love for what you do is rare in this world. I am glad for you.
Every end is a new beginning. For that reason, I say congratulations! It's always difficult to end a chapter in a book, but it's the cost of progress. Our experiences and memories make us who we are. Even if you're not in that garden anymore, it will forever be the foundation of the person you continue to become.
It must be such a relief to know the garden will be cared for. When I left my subtropical paradise garden we had made in Australia, the new owners had destroyed most of it within months - partly deliberately, partly just through neglect. The back garden was then excavated to make room for a pool. The only way to get over the devastation has been to make a new and excting temperate garden here in New Zealand. I just feel sad, not only for the lovely place it was, but also for the children who will grow up with a sterile space, no joy of growing living things, and just a pool.
@@trilliarobinson7862 hello, I totally understand you, and even if I don't know your garden I feel bad the new owners have destroyed a little paradise full of life you made 😞. Australia has lost a little paradise, New Zealand is winning one... I personaly moved to my house 4 years ago (from an appartment, in France) and I've been inspired by many youtubers since to create my little permaculture garden. It begins to look quite nice and efficient, and sometimes I think about "if I have to move (even if it's not in my plans !), will the new owners destroy all that ?" and that hypothesis breaks my heart...I wish you a nice gardening journey in your new place !
Thanks Melodie ! I think we all have to accept that new owners won't love our gardens as we do. Unfortunately, because of Covid lockdowns, I had to remain living across the road from mine for 9 months, so watched it's destruction firsthand ! All we can do is love the garden we are in, and gain so much pleasure while we can. @@melodiergb3654
Oh my goodness, I was thinking the same thing! I actually thought it was all done and I actually started *grieving* the loss of Huw's constant presence and this garden that he has caused to have such a huge impact on my life! And then he goes on to say it's not over...either the channel or this garden. Phew!! Thank you so much Huw, for all the work you have done for so many years! I didn't find you til about 5 years ago, but I think I have went back and watched every video you have made:) I don't comment a lot, but I do occasionally. I felt like this one needs a comment as it is a huge change but exciting new beginnings. I'm so glad my first perception was wrong but I thought I would take the opportunity to let you know how much of a positive impact you've made. The wisdom, beauty, freedom and so much of your personal life/joy of what you do, shared on your channel are absolutely refreshing and encouraging. You have inspired me to garden with abandon and to keep curiosity and fun at the center so my garden doesn't feel like a burden, but a great adventure....even when my growing season is 2 months long 😜 Thank you again:)
I was so sad, I had to read ahead in the comments because it seemed so heavy! Phew! I can watch and know. I don't like that kind of suspense.@@Atimatimukti
I have been watching your videos for years, and I feel honoured and privileged to been able to watch you grow and mature as wonderfully as the plants you have nurtured. Bless you and your family, and I look forward to watching your new garden develop!
A garden closer to home…looking forward to your next chapter! I am a “postage stamp” gardener, at 74 yrs…2 beds, still learning, on the corner of a busy street in a mountain town…I enjoy your garden journeys so much, it’s a fantasy garden journey for me! Blessings of roots and wings to you!
Growing up with you and your garden was very special. Thanks for those many years. And many years to come. Loving and living what you do is so important.💞
At first I was very sad when I heard you say goodbye to your garden, but as I continued to listen, I was very happy that you were going to continue with your channel and that your garden was going to be returned to your father. The aerial views show your beautiful art work with your garden and the love that you have for it. May God be with you and your family, and may your future be bright and successful.
Wow…you started so young. I have only known about your channel in the last few years, and it’s become a favorite. You are so good at what you do and you inspire so many.
Huw, I am a fellow gardening RU-vidr from Hungary, and I would like to thank you and your amazing garden for all the inspiration you have given me during the years. Your channel has always been a place I could go back to and recharge from if necessary, a goal to - still - achieve, your quality of work a standard to follow. Thank you very very much. Looking forward to seeing where you're going from here. 👏
Hi, I was so upset when I started watching this ‘farewell to the garden’ video, as I have been watching you since you were very young, you were and still are a huge inspiration to me…..you saved me in during lockdown, I felt as though I had a very interesting friend….then you said your Dad was having it back and you were still going to continue sharing ideas and your usual cheerful self with us all! What a huge relief! I feel rather selfish, but everyone tells me that as one door closes another one opens! I have been gardening before John Seymour wrote his self sufficiency book, but I’ve learnt so much more from you than anyone else. Thankyou and Goodluck with the secret garden. We need you as much as you need us!
From my whole heart: Thank you, Huw, thank you, Beautiful Garden! I don't mind telling you this video made me very emotional too... bless you for letting us know that you are going to keep with us, and moving to The Secret Garden. 💚
Huw. I've just cried. So emotional. Incredible. You are such an inspiration to so many and have lead the way. Changed so much and encouraged so many. From the bottom of my heart Thank You.
It's wonderful that your dad started & you wanted to help. Once he realized you lived it he allowed you to take care of it all by yourself. That's the way it should be. I know your dad will take good care of it. A new chapter is waiting. The new garden is anxiously awaiting for your 100% attention. It will be beautiful as this 1. I'm glad you're not giving up the garden videos
Dear Huw, your gardening channel has been a terrific influence on me. I am a "late bloomer", but and an enthusiast now, producing delicisous veg and moving around my garden recreationally. Thanks, son!
Oh no! I will really miss you in this garden. Thank you for your efforts and sharing your knowledge with us all. You did a great thing here. Don't forget that. Can't wait to see the next chapter.
Phew 😅 so glad to hear it is not the end of your channel Huw and no, it is not a funny idea by any means to thank the garden. As I’m sure you will already know, just like you and every single one of us the plants, wildlife & creatures that live there as well as the earth are “life” itself. All of us are living beings. If we/they were not, none of us would exist. We each have a role to play as guardians of the earth and we each are dependent on the other.. so with that in mind I’m sure your all encompassing garden appreciates you as well and the connection you have formed through the transference of the love and energy you put into it.. and that you have received in return. It has responded with an abundance of nutritious, life giving food and given much pleasure, healing and joy which you will also, receive from which ever garden you create. All the very best 🙏🏼
To me, your garden and videos are the most beautiful - you grieved me until you disclosed that this garden and you are both carrying on - lovely and lovely!
Oh my gosh , I had tears in my eyes watching this video 😢. What an inspiration! And I don't blame you for how you feel. Your dad was a wonderful man to let you use this garden to a wonderful young man with passion to grow and inspire thousands of individuals like me and many more ! Neither to say , I am excited to see your new garden! Can't wait ! 😂👏🏻 A new journey, how awesome! 😊
you know that teary-eyed smiley emoji?! That's me over here! A big hug to you and also to your Dad 🤗. I remember the videos with him in it. Happy for you both and honored to have been able to watch it all evolve. Now... Secret Garden grand-opening pleeeease!!! Eagerly awaiting this next chapter in your book! 💚🌱🌷🥰
Beautiful farewell, and so wonderful to have shared it with your Dad and he will continue to enjoy it. Secret Garden 💚🌱 Thank you Huw, you are an inspiration 🙏🏼
Wonderful to see you honouring your dad like that Huw, such a rare occurrence these day with the younger generation. Just goes to show you’ve had a wonderful upbringing with a freedom to explore the earth and reap the benefits of hard work. Looking forward to watching where your next journey takes you 🤗 well done!
Such a wonderful tribute to your best “friend!” I’ve watched you for several years and you’re my favorite gardener to watch. I’m an American but I’m a 1/4 welsh and have visited the country so that’s another reason I love your videos. Love that your videos are always so calming and refreshing, and you’re always so genuine. A real talent for communicating too. Your passion shines through… started to get chocked up because I know how attached we get to our gardens!! Thanks for being you.
Omg, I felt really choked up hearing you say your goodbyes to this beautiful place! I have followed your career since discovering one of your videos, perhaps when you were 13 or so, showing viewers how to take rose cuttings. I thought it was the sweetest thing seeing a lad so young sharing such a ‘grown up’ topic with so much enthusiasm. I have rejoiced over the years seeing your channel grow, and you alongside with it. You deserve every success, Huw! I’m sure the next venture will be an ever more successful chapter in your life. All the best, and I’m looking forward to sharing the journey with you.
How wonderful to find you one last time in your beloved and beautiful garden habitat! May your gift for growing lead you down more and more green and enchanting garden paths and adventures. We will be there thankfully with you - ever grateful for your inspiration!
You have really grown, not only in height but especially in knowledge! ☺This is something no one takes away from you. This is a time to look back at what you have accomplished! A great inspiration for us to start our own vegetable garden and grow bigger! 👍 We are starting fresh next season in our homestead in France after leaving our small vegetable garden behind. And we are very curious about your secret garden, this one is definitely going to be another success and we will follow you again!
Your gardens are works of art. The attention to detail and harmony show in everything, trellises, fences, raised beds etc. I look forward to see what’s next in your story.
I started watching you when you were a little kid, I thought it was a little weird for a kid to have a gardening channel and what could I learn from him but I subscribed lol. And I would periodically watch your videos with increasing frequency. It has been nice to watch you grow up and evolve as gardener. You are leaving behind a beautiful space but I am sure you will create a new one. You are still young and a new adventure is a great new learning opportunity. Look forward to watching the new garden evolve along with you.
I'm Australian and have watched yours and Mark's (from Selfsufficientme) channels for years. I have a tiny garden but grow as much food as I can. I had a horticulturalist ask me if I'd like him to help me plant out my garden when I was unwell for a couple of years and he mentioned the flowers he had in mind. I didn't recognise the plants he mentioned and asked "can you eat it?" He laughed and said "no" so I declined his offer. I never saw him again! I get a lot of my knowledge from my Grandad and also from you and Mark. Thank you and good luck on your future endeavours! 💜
And me. Plus Charles Dowding. I started growing at 4, thanks to my dad too. I’m now 71 and still learning and enjoying growing and eating the produce, now experimenting with using aquaponics for easier propagation of stem cuttings as well as wicking beds, raised beds, vertical growing, and wild food forest (banana circle, paw paw, sweet potato, ginger, tumeric, galangal, herbs), and quails, all in just about 35sqm of what was once a tiled waterfront. My friends think I’m mad to create so much work, but this lifelong interest, the closeness to nature, witnessing the life cycles and competing & symbiotic relationships, is what has kept me physically healthy, mentally alert and psychologically content all these years. I look forward to your next series Huw
Huw, so nice to watch this video and understand your grounded start from your Dad. You created an incredible environment and your passion pours through in all you do. It is not weird to thank your garden, it is a humbling appreciation of all that is beyond our control as gardeners. No doubt you have had a positive impact of countless aspiring gardeners including yours truly from Northern, Virginia, USA. Be safe and well and best of luck in your future endeavors.
This video just popped up out of nowhere and oh boy I was wrong thinking the title was dramatic; I can't imagine leaving sth, even for the better, that you worked and nourished so hard for over a decade. Especially when you spent a significant amount of your childhood in it. It is indeed a beautiful garden you cared and created. I can't help but hope you the best of best, with your next chapter! Take care!
I love the sentiment behind the video and as a new follower happy to hear the channel is continuing! My grandfather came to Canada from Penmark, Wales & was extremely patriotic (Welsh flag for my 10th birthday, bumper sticker for my 16th etc) I loved seeing life through the lens of the garden on his home ground. Selfishly hoping the new location is still in Wales, but looking forward to seeing you create another lovely space no matter where it is!
Hey Huw, from one Commonwealth to another.....we've never met, but I've always watched your journey from afar here in Canada. Keep spreading the word and doing what you're doing. It means a lot to so many people. Can't wait to see what is in store!
You are one of the few that has those memories stored in video, and able to re-visit at any time! Oh how I wish I could see videos of my gardens of the past!
Jesses, you gave me s shock at the beginning when saying farewell!! Your videos of a dream garden have been such a comfort for me in the last 5-6 years and my heart is bleeding a bit watching the marvellous drone footage! But I am very glad that you will stay with us! All the best for your new project!
Man, you got me with that thumbnail. 😱 While I live in a _radically_ different climate and can't really take away too terribly much in terms of certain crops, I've enjoyed your channel for quite a while now. I'm glad you touched on this being your career, because that's where I've stumbled a bit personally - I wanted a garden like this and honestly felt like I wasn't doing enough, and my wife has to remind me that I already have a full time job and about 1000 other obligations, and there just isn't the time. She's echoed what you said here, and I need the reminder sometimes. You've done more for making me want to visit Wales than any Welsh Tourism Board ever could. 😂 I'm looking forward to seeing the new garden progress.
So beautifully filmed - the footage, the music, the homage, the script, the history, the nostalgia, the journey, and of course Huw. I love the story, how it ends with the return of the garden to the original owner, the teary emotions. Thank you, love you, Huw, and your wonderful garden.
It’s been so beautiful to watch your channel grow and evolve into what it is today, from humble beginnings :) Your channel has been an invaluable guide and inspiration to building our garden in our first home over the last year. Thank you Huw!
Incredible journey. Followed you for around six years. Even when I didn’t grow my own food I still watched your channel. I was on the waiting list for my allotment for 3 years and now 3 years growing my own you have been giving me tips. So thanks can’t wait to see what’s up next! And yes I have your book!
It has been a blessing to watch you grow into such a fine young man, you have taught me things I would have never learned otherwise. Thank you so much!!!
Huw, you have been incredibly instrumental in my growth as a gardener. I started out with a (sad little) tomato plant many years ago and now have multiple beds and compost piles. I have gone further than I imagined as a gardener. I look forward to seeing your new spot and continuing my gardening education.
Wow. I was not expecting this today. This garden has cultivated seeds well beyond its hedge rows. This garden has helped with a greenhouse in central Ohio. It has helped me be more efficient with my time. It has helped me step back from time to time and really consider the dynamics of my particular space. And so. much. more. I look forward to the next chapter!
Touching goodbye to the garden that has brought you up and provided a space for you to grow just as well as the thousands of food plants over the years. How wonderful that although this chapter has ended, the garden will still be there with your dad to visit. Looking forward to the new chapter Huw, all the best 🌻🌻
Thank you for all the past videos and I would like to echo your thanks to the garden. Also thanks to your dad for allowing you and your passion to grow. I took over my allotment in 2018 and a lot if your videos have helped me to get my allotment to where it is now. By the way, don’t tell anyone but this video actually brought a tear to my eye. Thanks again and good luck with the new chapter.
A heart filled with gratitude for what has been and hope for what is to come. This is the essence of why I love your channel. Our gardens become friends each season and I talk to mine daily☺️ I’m sending my thanks to your garden as well today and look forward to the secret garden ahead!!
You are a very talented young man. What a beautiful tribute to your Dad and the garden where you started your love and career in gardening. I'm excited to see you move on to your own space and watch it transform into a gardening paradise. ❤️ it's also super special that you are propagating some things to bring with you, in that you bring the past with you into your new space and in that connect them together. It's just lovely.
I inherited my parents garden....I do understand how a garden can always be a part of you. It plants itself in your memory. Forever. Sweet memories. Thanks for all you have shared.
I can't believe I have been following you since you were a kid! I always loved that garden! Seeing it transform over the yrs has been delightful! I know your dad will do great keeping it up as you move on. Blessings from Oklahoma!
I know so many have already said this, but you've got this mom all choked up. Thank you so much for sharing your farewell with us, and thank your Dad for sharing his garden with us! Your folks must be so proud; I have 3 boys, all of whom are in your age group and I knew from the moment I first saw one of your videos that you were just as sweet and wonderful as they are! I have only just been watching your videos for a little over a year, but you've reinvigorated my love for gardening and I've learned so much, even though I've gardened for nearly 30 years. I'm so looking forward to your next chapter and thank you for sharing your love of gardening with the world :)
Super weepy here! I loved all your videos and learnt so much from you - many thanks to you and your garden for helping us build our own. Seems like an end of an era. Having trouble processing that we won’t see videos of Huw & this garden. Your father was incredible to give you a piece of himself in this garden - and look forward to seeing what he does with it. ❤
Thank you, Huw! Looking forward to and excited about the next chapter, but so pleased that you did this closure video. We all love this garden and learned so much from it, too ❤
😢 What a beautiful send off. How are you not bawling? So glad it's not the end of the channel. Looking forward to following your adventures in the secret garden.
Gosh, I wasn’t expecting this however, I understand. It’s lovely to pay tribute to the place where you started out on this gardening journey. I’ve enjoyed your videos in this space and watching you grow with it. Gardens are wonderful places and we learn so many things from this beautiful interaction with nature. Thank you for your many years of sharing this garden with us.
What a lovely tribute to such a beautiful garden. So glad to hear your dad will be caring for it. Looking forward to seeing the new garden space and how you transform it over time.
Thank you for sharing your loving tribute with us. I’ve learned much from you, and I so appreciate your love for your father. I also connect my passion for gardening with my dad-and treasure my memories of him in the garden now that he is no longer with us.
How lovely to be able to leave something you've cared for for so long in such capable hands, I hope you can continue to enjoy your Dad's garden for a long while yet! And all the best for the new space! Looking forward to seeing the next season. We've had a bit of a fallow year in our garden, but maybe seeing you settle in and set up will help me to get things going here :)
We have watched from the start- and have prayed for you and your family- you have grown so much-in wisdom, knowledge and understanding of life❤😢❤ beautiful video, ❤Richard and Martha
I've watched your channel from not long after you started and was pleased to see a teenager (preteen) so enthusiastic about growing food - I have the John Seymour books and The Goodlife was and still is one of my favourite TV programmes. It's been great to see your channel grow and be recognised the way that it is. Next chapter here we come.....
All choked up. 😪 Im 50, liviing in Czech Republic, gardening is my passion and you are still an inspiration to me. Keep up the work and good luck in everything you embark on in the future.
Good luck with your new garden, Huw! You've taught so many people over the years while sharing your videos from this garden. I remember all those years ago I first started watching your channel, so I can see how much this place has shaped your life. It will be very exciting to see how you start your new garden from scratch. I recently took on an allotment so I will be keenly looking out for your hints and tips 👍
