I was a lifeguard at Wild Water during our final season.. I remember stacking up all the lounge chairs after the final day to help the crew take them out. After the park closed I kinda just stopped guarding, nowhere had quite as amazing of an environment as Wild Water. Looking back on this video is like looking at your childhood home after it's rotted away. I can point out almost every single stand spot in between the rubble, I remember standing alongside the lazy river, or doing run-and-plunges at the wave pool after hours during in-service training. I remember standing in the waist-deep water at the bottom of the racing tube slides. It's crazy to know the place like the back of my hand even now. Wild water was a second home, and I can't imagine guarding at any other location. It's heartbreaking to see it in such a state. Rest in peace.

Outside of my personal feelings about the park closing, I would like to talk about WHY it closed. It wasn't very profitable, and almost every attraction barely even had a season left before needing to either be refurbished or replaced. It would've taken significant financial reinvestment to give the park a new lease on life. The park wasn't slow by any means, but it wasn't as busy it it needs to be to warrant investing that amount to keep it running. Two of the slides were already closed due to regular wear making them unsafe, and I can count at least 4 or 5 other slides and attractions that were likely on the verge of being retired for safety reasons. It's sad to see the place go, but it really wasn't a greedy business decision, I think Lazerus's hands were tied. It would've been a horrible business decision to try and keep the park running.

Great editing! I never went to Wild Water as a kid. My parents would always say ‘I’m not paying to take you to a water park when there’s an ocean right behind it’ 😂

I grew up in Caropines right there and spent all summer going there. Then I worked there after high school. Crazy to see it like this now

I was there the last day it was open, it was depressing that day it was gloomy outside and I remember leaving 1 hour before the park closed forever. That place was my childhood until 10. So many great memories like when my brother got his first job there. I lived very close to there and I was reaching the age where me and my dad could ride our bikes there but I never reached that time. Almost all of the water slides were messed up because when I rode the speed slides at the top for the first time, the structure was shaking. That place held my best memories with friends and family until the very last day. This truly was an amazing park with a great environment

Another place where memories were made, gone. I still miss the old Myrtle Beach Grand Prix. It was my favorite by far. The go carts were awesome and across the road was the speed boats. The aerial footage with the drone is great. Thanks for another great post.

Oh man. I haven't been there since 1995. Since then, I vacation there after they have closed for the season. More childhood nostalgia gone. 😥 It wasn't just the water park. It was also the go carts, putt putt, and arcade. I still have a red, white and blue plush stuffed basketball I won with tickets at the arcade from waaaaaaay back. Thank you for another great, but sad, video.

I'll miss it. We got free passes through our resort a couple of times and always enjoyed going. Made for a great day to take a break from the beach and have some fun.

WOW. You really killed it on this video...I mean, they are all great, but the vibe on this! Very Dan Bell-esk, The Proper People feel. Much more somber than your usual, in a fantastic way. Great job!

It’s a shame Lazarus group did this instead of improving and upgrading their properties. Even Myrtle waves and the Grand Prix barely get any updates.

It's Insanity, what is going to go there on that end, way off from the beach, that's going to be more profitable? Another little strip shopping center? There's no middle class money left to sustain operation of anything anymore.

I used to guard at wild water, and I miss it dearly. Unfortunately most of the attractions barely even had another season left in them before they were in need of replacement, some had already been put out of commission. I will say though, Myrtle Waves doesn't have the same charm and comfort that Wild Water had, that's why I didn't transfer to them after Wild Water shut down. In terms of business moves, Wild Water was quickly becoming a money pit and would've required significant reinvestment to get fully refurbished and make it worth the time and money. As sad as it is, it was an old park that just wasn't profitable enough to warrant reinvesting that amount of money to keep the attractions open and safe. It's sad to see it go, that place was home for me. By far the best work environment I've ever had.

This one hurts. 😢 Grew up going there every week during the summer…2012 was the last year we got season passes, unfortunately. Thank you for the drone footage. Great video as always.

That was some really nice drone-footage and editing. This is sad, but any of us here who've called upon a tradie or contractor for repairs can see how this might have happened; the repair-costs and maintenance-costs here are astronomical. Accordingly, insurance-companies are raising premiums or dropping coverage altogether. But even routine, non-claim related repairs/maintenance must have been staggering. You also have the high liability insurance costs in a town chock-full of injury lawyers. But, I think the nail-in-the-coffin was that Mark and Robbie got tired of dealing with that derpity-derp Surfside commission and council, and threw in the towel for revamping the property into something. So, there it sits, a mess... and quite frankly, that's what 'The Family Beach' deserves... a Waccamaw Mall.

Absolutely, two of our tallest racing slides were put out of commission due to being overworn during the second half of the second-to-last season. They never reopened. There were commonly worn items and attractions that were in need of replacement everywhere. Just about every one of them were at the end of their life, so keeping the park going for even another season or two without significant reinvestment would have been a pipe dream.

This makes me sad😢 but mb means "nfl" with potential land marks turn into more houses we may not really need at this moment. Rip wild water and Wheels.

This is so sad more and more things are getting stripped from our childhood memories and it looks like it is all at Myrtle Beach . I grew up going there 40 plus years ago and lived there also . So sad these staple attraction are going to the wayside , what are you supposed to do with your kids now ? Sorry to ramble on but this hits hard!

That hurt me and my kids when we drove by it and it was shut down and being torn down. This video was great and it will be missed. Wont be the same in Surf Side on vacation with most likely an resort or high rise going in. Hope it is something great.

I understand that most of the time when things closed it's one of 3 reasons... 1.... It wasn't profitable 2.... The owners got old and couldn't run it anymore and couldn't find a buyer.. Or 3.... The owners just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore!

Read an article where the owner said the economy, schools starting back earlier, and campgrounds in the area building their own water parks were all factors in their decision. So, I guess your #1 would be it.

@@MrMyrtle ok so 1991. It's weird though. I've been searching and can't find the opening date. I guess it was another park I went to as a kid. It had a lazy river and a slide that was really high and was almost a straight drop. Looked just like this place but it was in the late 80's

I remember MB as a little kid before the oil shocks/OPEC/inflation. We're now at the end of the middle class, corporate vampires/1%ers have sucked the money out. If it wasn't for cheap Chinese goods we'd be in hyperinflation, and not for ephemeral Internet infotainment numbing the peasantry people would be up in arms.
