Hello everyone! THANK YOU for 1,000 subscribers! We can't believe we already hit this milestone and we're excited to see what comes next. :) Of course, we're looking forward to many more great movies and sharing the experience with you all! - Eric & Sarah
An Epic Mob Movie based on a true story. “I’m gonna go get the papers the papers” 😂. Another Mob Movie you should watch is “Donnie Brasco” From 1997 also based on a true story. Starring Al Pacino, Johnny Depp…
Excellent reaction. Movie buffs and critics generally all agree that *Goodfellas* is the best film of 1990. One cool thing about it is that it seems to get better with each viewing, because it's very detail heavy. The script is brilliant.
1991. Same year as Miller's Crossing and The Godfather: Part III. A lot of good mob/gangster movies came out that year. Definitely something in the water.
Goodfellas and the first two Godfather movies are the gold standard of mob movies; congrats for getting "Goodfellas" under your belt! A few years later Deniro/Pesci/Scorsese did "Casino" which is almost "Goodfellas Goes To Vegas", equally essential. (they had earlier done "Raging Bull" together). Johnny Depp and Al Pacino in "Donnie Brasco" is also a must-see. DeNiro and Scorsese started out with the indie-mob movie "Mean Streets", with Harvey Keitel. Those three did "Taxi Driver" together. And Scorsese and De Niro did the excellent (and different) "The King Of Comedy" and "Cape Fear". And of course De Niro, Pesci, Scorsese, Keitel and Pacino just did "The Irishmen" together a few years ago. You watch that after you've seen all the others!!! GREAT REACTION!!
The two little girls with Karen when their daughters were young, were Lorraine Bracco's real daughters. One of them is Stella Keitel, whose father is Harvey Keitel.
Some other suggestions if you’d like.. “No Country For Old Men” (2007), “Dazed and Confused” (1993), “Gone Girl” (2014), “Rudy” (1993), “The Hangover” (2009), “A Few Good Men” (1993)…..
I second, "No Country for Old Men" Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley (directors on TLoU) watched that movie and wanted to recreate the tense feeling of that movie's scenes with TLoU's combat. It was one of the inspirations for the tone of the gameplay.
The entire "How am I funny" scene was improvised by Pesci. It got such a genuinely frightened reaction from Liotta, that Scorsese kept it in the movie.
@@EricSarahReact People who knew the persons the movie was based on commented that although this scene was made up, that is exactly the kind of prank Pesci's character Thomas DeSimone would have done in reality back in the day. That guy was every bit the scary psychopath you see in the movie.
Joe Pesci (Tommy) won the Oscar for this film for Supporting Actor. At the awards ceremony, it's usually common to play a brief clip of their performance. But because he did so much swearing, they used clips from Home Alone instead!
Fun fact: The comedy "My Blue Heaven", starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, is kind of a follow-up to "Goodfellas", and is based on Henry's life in the Witness Protection Program, though the names have been changed. The film was written by Nora Ephron, who was married to Nicholas Pileggi, who wrote "Goodfellas". They did research together and came up with both films, although "My Blue Heaven" was actually released one month earlier, so you could argue that "Goodfellas" is a prequel. Either way, it's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination.
The Lufthansa Heist was the beginning of the end for that crew. Some of the guys just got out of jail and they needed money. Jimmy wanted it all and had everyone involved killed. About 10-12 people.
I saw this at the theatre when it was released. As soon as Henry said "As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster", the audience erupted in cheers.
Jimmy did do a great job of cutting all ties to the Lufthansa heist. Even though everyone knew who did it and he did die in jail, not 1 person ever got convicted in connection to that robbery.
Goodfellas is one of the greatest films ever made. If you enjoyed it, I'd recommend Black Mass with Johnny Depp. It's another true story with Depp playing James "Whitey" Bulger, the Boston gangster whose status as a FBI informant protected him from prosecution for decades.
There's a follow up...Henry Hill got in trouble again, years ago.He was in The FBI witness protection problem. He was still talking to his mob buddies. He got involve with fixing college basketball games.
the college basketball games was before he went it the witness protection program - it was mentioned briefly in the movie by Morrie before they kill him - they were point shaving - paying college players to win games but not score more than the spread
Hi Eric and Sarah so a few things the movie leaves out Henry had Dyslexia and Expraxia so reading was next to impossible for him this is what lead him to resent school because he did try but teachers were thinking he was screwing around. the reason Tommy's mother didn't give him an open coffin was simply because THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE COFFIN. To this day Tommy's body has never been recoverd. Also Paulie and Karen were having an affair and he tried to force himself onto her when she turned him down. The FBI Agent interrogating Henry and Karen was the actual agent not an actor. Also Henry was kicked out of Witness protection because he kept getting into trouble. So ever since then the only way he can make any money is by constantly re living his life in the mob. So it's not surprising he became a drunk.
"The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part 2" and "Goodfellas" and "Casino". And "Donnie Brasco". Those are the top five (in the modern era). "Mean Streets" and "The Irishman", Scorsese and De Niro's first and last mob movies together are also great. "The Freshman" and "Prizzi's Honor" are the best mob comedies. DEFINITELY don't miss "The King Of Comedy" or "Cape Fear", two of De Niro and Scorsese's best films together (and not mob films). "Cape Fear" was their biggest hit together, a big movie of the 90s.....and NOT ONE REACTION for it yet. "The King Of Comedy" is another one: huge influence on "Joker", a classic movie with not one reaction yet. Someone has to break the barrier!
Those are all great. I would like to add that The Untouchables could be considered a gangster movie (just from the policemen"s point of view} and that was an excellent movie with great performances by Connery Garcia DeNiro and Costner.
@@ash_1419 No I didn't. That's nowhere near in the same league as those other movies. I'm not just making a list of movies about the mafia, almost all of them rip-offs of the Godfathers or Scorseses.
Perspective: even the most expensive Christmas tree at a Christmas Tree Lot is still something a working guy, with a family, car payment, and a mortgage, could still afford for the holidays. No one would blink an eye. As for the necklace, that's different... But it was never publicly flaunted.
NOW THIS IS A MASTERPIECE. Fun Fact:Joe Pesci improvised some of the lines. Recommendations------ Oldboy(the 2003 version not the remake one) Lost Highway Blue Velvet Lock,Stock And Two Smoking Barrels The Green Mile Mulholland Drive Eraserhead American Beauty 2001 A Space Odyssey Monty Python And The Holy Grail. Mean Streets(If you liked Goodfellas then you'll like this one too). American History X A Showdown In Little Tokyo In Cold Blood(1967) Bottle Rocket Wild At Heart Bad Lieutenant ALSO CONGRATS FOR 1K SUBS KEEP IT ON GUYS I TRUST IN YALL.
Another Scorsese film, I hope you haven’t seen, is Catch Me if You Can, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. I thought of it because Leo’s character is pretty out of control too. Also based on a true character.
12:33 that pistol-whipping is truly one of the most violent things I've seen and there's really not a whole lot of blood. It's the sound design+mixing, the decision to keep it all in one-shot and the performance by the actors. It's soooo simple and it just works.
In real life the beating was so bad the pistol didn’t break like it did in the movie Tommy beat bats so hard the gun broke on his face that why they thought they killed him
Guys I really like your reaction chanel and I'm so glad you reacted to this movie, it's my favourite one, I watched it when I was 12 years old and the facts that I know so that it was a true story really made me go go wild. I thought that what was depicted in the picture was real freedom and and because I was a damned dumb prick, I went all the way through to prison. Three times. Now I'm a law obiding citizen and I'm happy in this life, but, this movie always got a place in my heart, and I'm glad you liked it. Greetings from France (Paris rules) Ali
Best Gangster Flick ever made! Nominated for 6 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci. Dances With Wolves took home 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture.
It wasn't until I had watched this movie about a hundred times that I realized that whole tirade Tommy was throwing against that restaurant owner was on purpose and pre planned the whole time. In the middle of terrorizing the waiter Tommy looks over at Henry and says "You know you're supposed to be helping me with this right?".
In real life Tommy & Stacks were best friends. After Stacks made his mistake they told Tommy he had to kill him. He refused at first but then was told he would never be made if he didn't do it. He finally agreed to and cried when he killed him.
Scorsese is probably at his best when he’s making movies about crime - he has a trio of films about organized crime families - Goodfellas is about a New York Italian mob family, Casino focuses on members and associates of the Italian mob from Chicago running a casino in Las Vegas, and The Departed is about the Irish mob in Boston - and then you have Wolf of Wall Street about white collar crime in the NYC financial world of the 1980s.
Some wiseguys who knew the real Tommy were asked what the difference was between the film version and the real version. They said that what we saw in the movie was the "G-rated" version of Tommy. Yikes.
Even besides the final straw of taking out a made man, I have the feeling that Tommy had been painting a bigger and bigger bullseye on himself with his psycho antics for quite a while. That stuff really starts to draw the kind of attention that’s more trouble than it’s worth to the really big guys. I doubt there’s anyone still alive who can truly say what happened to Tommy. There were some accounts here and there over the years which make it pretty certain that a bullet in the head is very tame compared to how he most likely really went out.
@@0okamino According to John Gotti, he was the button man on the Tommy hit. Don't know how true it is, but ex mobster Michael Franzse says the same thing. And from what I've read, you're correct, the bullet in the face was, by far, the least of his issues.
@@eddiepiszczek4820 I wouldn't doubt it. Gotti was good friends with Billy Batts, so it would be even more personal than the fact that Tommy took... _unsanctioned action_ against a made man.
@@0okamino From what I understand, Bats wasn't the only made man Tommy whacked out. As a side note, in Henry Hills book, he talks about how Paulie sent Tommy in to that restaurant to scare the owner into going to Paulie for help because Paulie had been trying to get control of that spot for quite awhile on the downlow. I bring that up because it's suspected that Paulie used Tommy as his pit bull always with the expectation that he was gonna take Tommy out one day. Henry said that it was actually Paulie who gave up Tommy to the Gambinos.
The freeze frames are a mark of Scorsese films. The shot of Karen and Henry walking through the restaurant (I can't remember what the shot is called) is also a hallmark of Scorsese
You know, if you dig that whole organized crime and old-time music vibe, consider playing Mafia 1 and 2. They're both excellent 10-hour story games. Mafia 1 was recently remade with modern graphics and even Mafia 2 (2010) still holds up very well and is heavily inspired by this movie in particular (including the amount of f-bombs, lol).
my first time watching one of your reactions - you guys are great! I watch many different reaction channels and I think you're probably the best ones so far
I did notice! I didn't mention anything since Sarah hasn't seen it, but yeah a handful. It took me a few watchings to realize that "Paulie" was in here! - Eric
@@EricSarahReact Great. 2 other clear ones are Lorraine Bracco, ' Karen ' , as ' Dr. Jennifer Melfi ', and Mike Imperioli, 'Spyder ', as ' Chris Moltisanti ', but of course, many more....
Fun fact . To get the key for the Lufthansa heist, they got the security guard drunk one night and got him a hooker, then while he was occupied they stole the key from his pocket and got copies made. There is also a documentary on youtube called " the real goodfella" featuring the real Henry hill , definitely worth watching.
@@timlevis3630 "just" read the book! 😂 I'm not having a pop but saying just read the book these days is like saying "just" climb Everest instead of using google maps or watching drone footage 🙄✌
There is a movie on The Lufthansa heist which is based on a book written by the detective in charge of the case. In that movie Donald Sutherland played the character played by Robert De Niro.
Congratulations on the 1k milestone! Really enjoyed your reaction and thoughts. This is definitely a classic and a great introduction to this style of film. Some of my favorites are: The Departed (a bit newer but huge Ensemble cast) Donnie Brasco( based a true story) Casino(another based on truth) Heat (though it's more a heist movie Vs Mafia but same vibe) Looking forward to your next video whatever it may be. Much love to you both.
I really enjoyed watching you two view Goodfellas together for the first time. It reminded me of the first time I watched it, which was with my wife. We both loved it! I really liked your commentary which was thoughtful, intelligent, and very funny. The best line came from Sarah when she responded to the brutal and over the top way they dispatched the vic in the trunk. Sarah said: "I guess they had to be sure." I sprayed my coffee laughing at that one. The timing and delivery were hilarious! Great job guys!
In the beginning they show him committing arson as a kid, blowing up cars, but he was happy n free! In the end we see him in the Witness Protection house, slams the door, and it sounds like a jail cell The implication being- He still has his “freedom”, but at what cost?, in his mind, he might as well be in jail.
The real story was that someone came and started a rival taxi company that offered lower deals for its customers. The bombing was done to send a message.
A really great crime movie is, From Dusk Till Dawn. Recommended! If you haven't seen it, watch it completely blind, dont research it, trust me, it's worth it.
See the guy talking to them about coming into the witness protection scheme? This is the ACTUAL GUY who dealt with the REAL Henry and Karen Hill in the witness protection scheme. Henry Hill has just died.
The scene where he’s going around and getting followed is also pretty chaotic because he’s started getting high on his supply. Part of you is supposed to think he’s just being paranoid but eventually his Paranoia gets confirmed when he gets busted.
Hello, I enjoyed your reaction. I had seen Goodfellas before. The real Henry Hill, who Ray Liotta portrayed, did enter witness protection as portrayed in the movie, and stayed in that for some years. Later with passing time the people he had known had passed or were removed from circulation in prison, and he felt safer again. So he left witness protection, and went public, telling his story. He published a memoir of his life. That book was the basis of this movie, and he collaborated with making this movie. I saw a video of an interview with him in this public phase, and in there he made a comment that made me want to write my comment here to repeat that to you. He said that 97% of this movie was an accurate portrayal of their lives. I had come here to repeat that. Another thing he said in that interview, was that that lifestyle was horrible, that everyone he used to know from then was now either dead or in prison.
Never watched it Sarah this is brilliant along with casino and taxi driver one of de Niro best beautiful brilliant movie 🎥 and an excellent story their don’t make movies like this anymore thank you Eric and Sarah for everything movies and games it’s been a wonderful journey and I just glad I found your channel take care and I see you soon bye
My favorite mob movie of all time. I will admit that because 95% of the movie took place within in 20 miles of where I live on Long Island dosn't hurt that much. LOL. The scene where he beats the guy up with the gun is practically right around the corner from me and it looks just like that. By the way, Joe Peccei's mom in the movie is actually Martin Scorsese mom in real life. If u ever want to watch a excellent mob tv series check out Boardwalk Empire.
