They say that Tommy Desimone was actually tortured to death in front of John Gotti, because Gotti and Billy Batts were childhood friends. But nothing is made certain. It's not even known for a fact that it was the Gambinos that killed Tommy. Most people agree that Paulie had a hand in it, if not did the killing by himself for his own reasons. Tommy Desimone was a trouble maker, and the mob kills off their own people when they're trouble, sooner or later.

If you liked Goodfellas you would probably like the HBO show, The Sopranos. There were 27 actors from Goodfellas that were in The Sopranos. Henry Hill eventually left the witness protection program and basically enjoyed the rest of his life as a celebrity in Las Vegas, living as an artist after Goodfellas came out. The mob stopped looking for him and trying to kill him. He painted and sold neck ties with his original artwork on them. I actually got to know the real life Henry Hill a little bit in the last few years of his life and even exchanged a few emails with him. I really liked the guy. In real life Henry did work in construction brick laying because Paulie controlled the union but he never picked up a trowel.I can’t remember if it was the same time because it’s been a long time since reading the book it’s based on(Wiseguy)

You should watch the movie again with the DVD commentary from real life Henry. It’s chilling how he casually talks about all the killing in the movie, it makes you realize how real it is.

There was a passing mention of 'Point shaving up in Boston' was related to them rigging College basketball, and Henry Hill was involved in it. ESPN did a documentary on it called "Playing for the Mob", and Ray Liotta did the narration for it because he played Henry in this movie.

The real Henry Hill just died a few years ago. He told his own story many times in his lifetime and wrote books about his life. He died of natural causes long after he left the witness protection program. He was a regular guest on the Howard Stern show.

Henry Hill was actually a guest on the Howard Stern show for years. The author who wrote the goodfellas books credits Howard for getting more out of Henry then he ever could. Henry presents himself as a hero who wasnt really violent, but you know that's not true.

This is the GOAT of mob movies imo and yet it's still relatively underrated by almost everyone. Each scene is like it's own movie. Pesci and DeNiro were the big names but Liotta made it an instant cult classic!

I imagine people are going to suggest all the obvious mob movies. The Godfather, Casino, etc. There are so many great mob movies beyond The Godfather and Scorsese though. Mob movie recommends for the channel “Scarface” (1983) “Donnie Brasco” (1997) “The Untouchables” (1987) “A History of Violence” (2005) “The Iceman” (2012) “Eastern Promises” (2007)

There is pretty much only three endings a person that joins the mafia can expect. Getting murdered, life in prison, or witness protection. It's extremely rare to ever leave alive. Only one man has ever been able to leave and live without having to be in witness protection, and that was under special circumstances where he had gained respect from other mob members, including mafia members from other families. Even then though there was a time where some had tried to kill him, but the hit was called off or failed.

That scene where he asks if 'im funny' was legit real as Joe Pesci thought he'd go off script and they recorded it.. Ray Liotta's reaction is 100%real

If you want to know more about the differences between what really happened, I recommend checking out the History Buff's episode on this movie. He provides background not only for the events that occur, but the lives of the real life Henry Hill and other mobsters in the film. He also goes into how James Burke (Jimmy the Gent) and Paul Vario (Paul Cicero in the movie) weren't as friendly/fatherly as portrayed in the film. Other than that, this movie is great and tries it best to stay actuate in ALOT of it (Including the Prison scene)!

Screenwriter Nick Pileggi's wife, Nora Ephron (who also wrote When Harry Met Sally and a lot of other romantic comedies), actually. Pileggi wrote the book Wise Guys that the movie is based on, and his wife wrote My Blue Heaven very loosely based on the Hills entering the Witness Relocation Program. If you can find it, Henry Hill's kids wrote a book about growing up during these events and it's pretty chilling. The movie changed his kids -- he actually had a son and daughter, and when they were arrested the son was a teenager.

It wasn’t that Henry was the “calm” one. He was surrounded by psychopathic criminals. The real Tommy was a homicidal maniac. The real Jimmy was a cold blooded killer and criminal. The book Wiseguys which the script is based on is worth checking out. It’s on audiobook I believe.

Someone familiar with everything this movie covered said Joe Pesci's portrayal of Tommy was spot on. The only difference was the real Tommy DeSimone was a bit taller and had a moustache.
