Puzo wrote the book in the mold of the current potboiler books at that time....Harold Robbins, Jacqueline Susann. Lots of sex and violence. Much more sex in the book The movie is more like fine literature than the book is.
Lolz no the didn't say that about Goodfellas , Henry said that about it , all other mobsters said that about the Godfather, both Michael Francses & Sammy The Bull (two real actual ex mademen , not just a associate like Henry was) said that Henry Hill made a lot of shit up in the film but it still is fairly accurate but the Godfather was far more accurate just not the characters were real names but they're all based on real life mobsters , for example Vito is based on 3 different mob dons!!! I used to think Goodfellas was better but it's not The Godfather is far more rewatch able, the characters are way better, the story is like the most legendary film story ever written that's why The Godfather 1&2 is considered the greatest film ever made & it's the only film that will literally teach u all of the 48 laws of power that u can use in your own everyday life even today so it's got infinite rewatch value, Goodfellas has no plot because it's based on true events & gets a little boring after seeing it a million times but don't get me wrong , it's definitely still in my opinion as Scorseses masterpiece of all his masterpieces in my eyes👍
Goodfellas is better than the godfather, With the godfather I struggled to stay awake while goodfellas kept me hooked the entire way. Carlitos way is also better than the godfather.
It was an excellently acted scene. Pesci's turn from comedy had that slight psychotic edge to his voice. Even though he laughed it off you could see he was unbalanced.
@@seansersmylie I have to rate his Young Vito Corleone in Godfather part II a bit higher Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando where the first pair to win Oscar’s for playing the same character
There is no word 'principle' for mob. Never assume they're worth rooting for, attractive, cool, impressive. They're animals. No decent human being becomes a criminal, no matter what. There's brilliant and heart wrenching moment in 'Bronx Tale' (which I really recommend out of the best mob movies) when character played by De Niro scolds his son about honest job and honest money. And that's always a reminder what these people really are.
"No decent human becomes a criminal, no matter what" is nonsense. It's something a square would say, and more than that, it's objectively untrue. Anne Frank was a criminal. Runaway slaves during any given Slave-Trade are also criminals. Grow up, square.
@@PorterJustPorter you made a perfectly valid argument, why add in the final insult? All you did was lose credibility. It was unnecessary and juvenile. Be better.
@@PorterJustPorter Ppl don't get it that never come up the hard way or was raised on the OTHER SIDE. By other side I mean the ppl that's been fucked over and forgotten about by the system. Me and my family know ALL TOO WELL about how dirty the system is. We ain't looking down on ppl that aren't hurting innocent ppl and get theirs how they can. My dad tho. He IS an honest man and worked HARD for his family all his life. He wouldn't commit violence unless 2 things. Someone tried to hurt his family or hurt him. ESPECIALLY his family. So I have an internal battle allot cause my dad is my hero and I wanna be like him BUT I am treated in my home town with NO honor by the cops and ppl in power and not even for anything I have done. No I get judged when I try to walk the straight n narrow for things MY FAMILY did. These fuckin pigs around here tried to get a girl to scream rape on me. According to her they wanted me BAD. Why? Idk and I don't have a criminal record, I don't go round hurting ppl, I just stick to myself and try to do right so u can probably understand my anger and distain for the system and no I don't hate all cops I hate BLM and ANQUEEFA but I DO understand the mindset of some of these mobsters........ So.
Yeah they never had any principles. The mob have been romanticized by Hollywood. Even though I love The Godfather, I'm smart enough to realize it's a fictional fairy tale. Even former gangsters say that The Godfather is so far from what real mob life was really like.
When Tommy looked up at Henry with blood on his face and said 'i didn't want to get blood on your floor', that was epic! A real good look at how much of a psychopath he was. That considered, apparently the real Tommy Devito was worse, hard to believe.
Maybe because he didn't want any evidence left behind. Of course anybody who did something wrong doesn't want to leave blood on the floor. It doesn't mean they are a psycho it's just common sense
Yeah i read that the real Henry once saw Tommy shoot and kill a random civilian on the street because Tommy wanted to try out his new gun. The real Tommy was crazier than Tommy in the movie. Just a nightmare of a person.
So many Ladies say they like bad boys. Riiiiight up until the boys are bad to THEM! Then they are shocked and hurt. There is no cup of coffee strong enough to wake up people like that. That is why Goodfellas is a great lesson. If some one says "wait a minute" and starts qeustioning the actions and glamour at the start:good for them. If they laugh and clap at it? Run for the hills!!!!
**She spends most of the movie talking about them being psychopaths** “They shot Tommy in the face so his mother couldn’t give him an open coffin funeral.” **She smiles, looks at the camera, and creepily nods her head in satisfaction** 🤣
Tommy DeSimone (Tommy De Vito in the movie played by Joe Pesci) was a ruthless psychopath. He has murdered dozens of people including women and children. Henry Hill (Ray Liotta in the movie) said that one day Tommy bought a new gun and wanted to try it so he shot and killed at random a complete stranger in the street. Henry was shocked and asked Tommy why he did that and Tommy answered: "Well, I'm a mean cat." Tommy did murder Billy Batts for having told him to get 'his fucking shinebox' and there are rumours that Tommy was killed on the orders of John Gotti (the mob boss) who was a personal friend of Batts. Also they were tired of Tommy who was too unpredictable like when he shot the waiter for telling him to go fuck himself. It's hard to know how he died exactly as Tommy DeSimone disapeared in 1979 but as I said, he was probably murdered by the bosses who had enough of him.
Trixy if you didn't know this was based on the real life of the real Henry Hill who was an associate to the Lucchese family, one of the 5 families. For another real life mob story you should watch Donnie Brasco, a real life FBI agent Joe Pistone infiltrates the Bonanno family which is another one of the 5 families, he was undercover with them for 6 years I believe. its a great movies as well.
Th Godfather paints a much more idealized verison of the mob. This movie is very good about showing what it is like to be a mobster, never knowing who to trust and much more brutal and chaotic.
Also, Godfather is more about the upper echelon of the mob where as Goodfellas is more of a street level view….the only official mob members in this movie were Pauline and Billy Bats.
Paulie’s no-drugs rule had nothing to do with principles: if one of his crew got arrested by the FBI for drug dealing, they could scare him with a harsh sentence into giving everybody else in the gang up. Which is exactly what happened to Henry, and countless other gangsters who turned rat to get protection from jail and/or being whacked.
20:40 What the movie doesn't tell you is that Paulie was having an affair with Karen at that time. Gives a new meaning to the "I know how to talk to her" line.
When Henry Hill went into WitPro, he wanted to take his girlfriends along with his wife and kids. His kids actually turned out okay and wrote a book from their perspective called "On The Run". The movie actually made Hill look a lot better than he was.
Finally somebody else who knows On The Run, I've read that book more times than I can count. Really tears down the legend that Henry tried to build himself in Wiseguy. The part I always remember is the time Henry took his son into the basement to shoot an Ingram Submachinegun, in a house that was just down the block from a police station.
And his acceptance speech was among the shortest - "It's my privilege. Thank you!". Apparently he didn't have one prepared as he thought he had no chance of winning.
"Everyone tells me I've got bad taste in men" etc... honey, wait for the second half. Don't be drawn in by the glamour of the first half of gangster films! And bit of advice for life... You aint gonna change him.
Thanks for watching I'm glad you enjoyed this one. If you like movies like this you might want to check out another great mob movie called Casino it's also based on a true story.
Karen’s love for Henry reflects Henry’s love for the mob. He’s in love with the glamorous lifestyle and everything that comes with it but it ends up betraying him.
23:05 This is why people love Dirty Harry. 30:14 This is the reaction I never knew I needed. I'm surprised that Blue is so darn cute when she's vengeful.
From Goodfellas to Grand Theft Auto Vice City the video game, Ray Liotta is one of the greatest actors ever. R.I.P. to him. And Joe Pesci, the funniest actor out there. Love everything Pesci has done.
So what actually happened to the money? Vincent (Vinny Gorgeous) Basciano ended up with the bulk of the money. $5 million was thought to have gone to finance an animated movie about a cartoon ferret, the rest ended up being gambled away.
The difference between 'Goodfellas' and 'The Godfather' is that even though 'The Godfather' is an all time great movie it is basically fantasy and the other is much closer to reality. 'The Godfather' gives the illusion of honor and integrity and some organized crime members did have a certain honor and integrity in that they served life sentences in prison or faced execution from fellow mobsters rather than becoming witnesses for the government but for the most part these guys were self serving ruthless criminals that could kill without mercy. Movies like 'Goodfellas' 'Casino' and 'Donnie Brasco' give you much more of an honest look at the harsh reality of what the life was like.
Hey Blue! Glad you liked it! This particular movie was one of the few movies that was also an ugly reality to what 'the life' was about. Everything from his childhood desire on what he saw on the streets, to Karen revealing she was turned on by Henry's defending her honor. And yeah, running away from a boyfriend who asks you to hide his gun, was and is, still the right thing to do, due to the legal penalty. But yeah, if watch the post Goodfellas interviews that the actual Henry Hill testifies, you'll find out, it was a lot more of an ugly reality to it, from what Hollywood made it out to be. Keep on keeping on, you pretty!!! You're great!!! 🥰
I love the gradual change Blue shows as she watching this. She goes from saying these guys are cool and she wants to be like them and then says they’re terrible people. Lol
Henry Hill outlived everyone he once was associated with in the mafia. The ones who took over once the older ones died they rescinded the bounty on Henry allowing him to continue to walk around and do all kinds of interviews for documentaries. Some stuff includes the ESPN 30 for 30 on the Boston University men’s basketball point shaving scandal and many shows on Reelz
27:32 Tommy wasn’t becoming a boss he was being made. Jimmy said “They’re gonna make him.” That meant Tommy was going to officially become a member of the mob. It takes a lot of years to become an actual member. They choose you, you don’t choose them. Of course it was just a ploy to execute him but that’s what it means. You spend years as an associate. Then you can become a captain. After you become a captain you’re eligible to be boss. But all that takes a lot of time.
When I got my first gun at 8 yrs old I didn't want to be a gangster or commit any crimes. I wanted to hunt with it and use it for sport. And, I learned how to use it for self protection.
When I was in high school they had this policy of contacting parents after 3 days missed in a row.So I missed 2, went 1, ignoring weekends. I wasn't a gangster, I was just bored out of my mind and spent my time off riding my bicycle all over the countryside.
Goodfellas is based on a true story, and it does something that most mobster movies don't. It shows them to be a bunch of schmucks. They may have a lot of money and get away with a bunch of crap, but at their core they're a bunch of assholes. Even Paul, who was the sanest of the bunch, only had principles to protect himself. That is, he was wiser and took a longer view of things, but he was also a murdering thug. There was no nobility in any of them. The movie was based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi. They changed the name of the movie to "Goodfellas" because, at the time, there was a TV series about organized crime called "Wiseguy."
Paulie didn't have principles with regards to the drug dealing. He didn't want his guys doing it as the sentences being given out for those that got caught were so long that people were tempted to rat to reduce their time in jail.
The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver are great companion pieces to eachother. It could be your next Scorsese endeavour. Joker was famously heavily inspired by the 2 films, and has luckily given a renewed interest in especially King of Comedy, since it was overlooked in it's own time.
"Paulie has principals" Not..really. The chief reason why drugs are such a big no-no in the mafia is the fact the sentences for drug-related crimes are so stiff, guys would 'flip' or turn informant in order to save themselves from doing 30-40 years for pushing drugs (it's worth noting, also, that the prison part of this movie was pure fiction. No one lives that well in prison, not even gangsters).
Loved the reaction. Saw this in theatre when it came out in '90 and have loved it ever since. Based on true events and actual individuals with some artistic licence. There are videos which detail the film and the real people. Unlike the film, apparently there was a timegap of couple of weeks between the Shoe Shine scene and Billy Batts getting killed. Fun Fact, if I recall rightly, The mother that has the company for dinner and they get the knife, is the mother of Martin Scorsese. They got a lot right in the film which is maybe why it holds out still as great as it did then. Like you said, Justice does come for you, just be patient. This is one of the Best maffia films there is, in my humble opinion. Have a great week Blue and Kitten!
in real life the kid that was shot in the foot and then killed was buried under the concrete floor in that room. The cops came in and looked around and did not know this. Later they dug him up and buried some somewhere else. At least thats what henry hill told howard stern
Goodfellas, based on a true story, is much closer to what the mob is really like than the romanticized portrayal of "honor and integrity" of the Godfather (as great as the latter film is).
This is all basically a true story. They changed the last names of the characters, but this all basically happened the way it did in the movie. The Lufthansa Heist is still the biggest heist in US history, if I'm not mistaken.
The real Tommy was a lot worse. Henry once said him and Tommy were hanging out and Tommy said, “You want to see something?” and then just walked up and shot some random person in the head. Also, he was 6’5” in real life. A true psychopath.
Is it just me or does anyone else want Trixy to watch the Chicken Fingers episode of Community? Which then of course means she'll have to watch the series from the start, to gain full context of the background!
If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to see Casino. It's a bit of a retread of this movie, but it's still incredibly good. Also be sure to see Thief, which is from the director of Heat. One of the best crime movies ever!
Marty did a great job with this classic and it is one of my favorite mob movies of all time. If you want to read the basis for the movie, it is Nicholas Pileggi's book "Wiseguys". Pileggi worked closely with Marty on this. As for Paul, you were a superb actor who kept humble and we miss you. Rest In Peace, Paulie! As for that opening line, it is the American equivalent of saying, "Mommy, Daddy, when I grow up I want to be banditti." As for the Lufthansa money, the feds still haven't found it.
When it comes to Martin Scorsese, this movie is a masterpiece back in 1990. The story is real on the adaptation book called wiseguys, and Scorsese and the author wrote it together. The only main character that is real is Henry Hill, the other names from Robert De Niro’s character, and Joe Pesci’s character it’s non-fictional but the characters are real, but the names has been changed because Scorsese and the filmmakers didn’t have the references but the story is real.
11:27 He got off sweet and easy? Sure, if you don't count all the broken bones in his face, then sure.....he got off sweet and easy. I suppose as far as gangsters go, then perhaps he got off easy. He could've been Billy Batts, who was beaten almost to death, stabbed several times with a butchers knife, and then shot several more times, just for making fun of Tommy.
This movie although glamorized the mafia also showed that in the end it isn’t as amazing as you would think. Cause no matter what they will turn on you when they get scared that you’ll rat them out and you’re not even talking. There is no full trust and in the end no happy ending to where you retire happy
A true classic. Blue, if you haven't seen it yet, watch the movie 'Casino', also starring De Niro & Pesci and directed by Scorsese. On a similar topic, I also recommend the film 'A Bronx Tale' from '93, directed by De Niro.
24:50 No Blue, Paulie doesn’t have principles, he’s a survivor. The drug laws in the US at this time were draconian at best. The mob ran on “omertà”, the oath of silence. When a guy is looking at 3-5 years for robbery he can keep his mouth shut. It’s just the cost of doing business. But when you’re looking at 50-70+ years in jail for dealing drugs you’re going to cut a deal any way you can. In real life, that’s how they broke up the mob in the US, guys involved in drug crimes turned on anybody they could.
Can't wait for you to see "Godfather Part 2" now, which has De Niro in a TOTALLY different role. And "Casino" is basically "Goodfellas".....except it takes place in Las Vegas. (both Casino and Goodfellas are true stories). GREAT REACTION TO A GREAT MOVIE! This is the mob how it REALLY was. Godfather and Godfather Part 2 go up to the 1950s. Goodfellas and Casino tell the mafia's story from the 1950s-1980s.
@@tvalokibatman6563 I don't think much of "Scarface". I mean it's ok, but it's nowhere near in the league of those others. Watching Pacino and Pfeiffer "dancing" on the disco floor is pretty hilarious, though. Tony Montana: the worst dancer in Cuban history, LMFAO. Pacino's accent is ridiculous as well. It was panned when it came out - totally understandably - but it gained a cult following over the years due to it always being run on cable. (Like lots of movies from the 80s that have reputations). De Palma was always a hack director, nowhere in the same league as Scorsese and Copolla.....all you have to do is watch "The Untouchables" to know that. ("Carrie" is great though)
Around the time this movie came out I was working in a store and one of my co-workers was this Italian fella...he talked about 400 miles per hour like he was on coke because he was and could have walked on to the set of this movie. He carried with him a poster of his girlfriend(scantily clad)and was always trying to pull a con. Then one night he came in and said some guys were going to kill him because he was in the mob or something. So me and another guy went out front and looked the parking lot over and a man carried a shotgun out of his car and put it in the trunk. In retrospect I think it was all a stunt. He got fired that night(probably to collect...he did have that cocaine habit I spoke of and it'll turn practically any rich guy poor, see Tony montana). Yet another guy from work got a ride from him . He told him to wait in the parking lot and walked into Lowes or something and just walked out with some stuff. A wannabe goodfella.
Yes, this is a mostly true story with a few creative changes. Outside of Henry and Karen, most of the last names have been changed for legal reasons. The real life Jimmy died before reaching prison release. They talked for years about doing a sequel to this, because Henry Hill's life after the end of this movie was just as crazy. Unfortunately Ray Liotta, who played Henry in this, died not to long ago, so that won't be happening. If you want an idea what Henry's life after was like, watch the movie "My Blue Heaven" which is a comedy that takes a lot of its inspiration from Henry's life in witness protection.
This is really good movie. I think you’ll like it. It shows the glamour & glitz of a life of crime and then it shows the brutality, no loyalty (only to their self), and evilness of that same life.
