There is a comedy movie called My Blue Heaven which released in 1990 and was written by Nora Ephron. She was the wife of Nicholas Pileggi who wrote novels and screenplays including Goodfellas. Nora based My Blue Heaven on Henry Hill’s life in witness protection. It stars Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, and Joan Cusack. It’s a pretty funny movie and interesting to know it’s based on Henry Hill.

Joe Pesci won the best actor Oscar for this role. You should watch the TV show "THE SOPRANOS" which is one of the greatest TV dramas ever made. It is set in contemporary time (late 90's early 2000's) about a stressed out Mafia Boss who has to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist is played by Lorraine Bracco who plays Henry's wife Karen in Goodfellas - in fact, there are quite a few Goodfellas actors that appear in THE SOPRANOS

Pretty sure the FBI agent who's talking to Henry and Karen about going into witness protection was the actual guy who busted Henry. I remember him from watching this the first time and he seemed to just stand out in that scene like it was so natural, and it was. The "don't give me the babe in the woods line" when Karen tries to act like she had nothing to do with anything is so good.

Isn't it interesting that Henry and Karen only separated *after* going into witness protection, and not during that whole stressful time period while they were living a crime life? But in a way, it makes complete sense. They're both addicted to the action and excitement. And that was the time when they actually needed each other to get through all the insanity of those years. But after that's all over-boring, average witness protection life in the suburbs? With nothing left but each other, there's also nothing around anymore to distract them from the fact they don't really love each other. They were just in love with the "life" really. Sometimes you can really bond with another person over a shared trauma, or some other unique experience, and to our brains, that *feels* to us like real "love" because it's so powerful.

The gangster Tommy was based on, Tommy DeSimone, was a complete inhuman monster. I can't remember if it was in the movie (I haven't seen it in 15 years) but once Hill, DeSimone, and Jimmy Burke (the gangster Jimmy was based on) were walking down the street having a conversation. Out of nowhere Tommy said he was going to kill the next person he saw coming the other way, and then went on with the conversation. A little later some young guy rounded the corner walking toward them, and without batting an eyelash Tommy pulled out his gun, shot the guy in the face, and continued with the conversation without missing a beat.
@0okamino
@0okamino 2 года назад
Yeah, Tommy didn't make it to 30. I'm surprised he made it to 28 with the crazy shit he was known for. Sure, you can get away with a lot when you're connected like he was, but there's a limit. I suspect that the big guys would have had Tommy taken out even if he hadn't killed Billy Batts, since his out of control antics could draw a lot of unwanted attention, and it was no longer the era when the crime families had quite so much influence. Tommy seems the type to end up creating more trouble than he was worth, one way or another.

Henry broke the rules of the witness protection program, he got involved again with drug dealing, then went to prison in general population with other mafia members. His life was on the line but Micheal Franzesy a Colombo captain, saw him and told a guard, so he was put in a protection wing. When he got out he turned into an alcoholic and worked in a kitchen, wrote a cook book and died a few years ago. The other two Jimmy and Paul, died in prison a long time ago.

This is a top 5 favorite movie of mine. I love it so freaking much. Scorsese is an absolute master at showing how this life can be so intoxicating but also why that is such an illusion. "The Godfather" movies are essentially American Shakespeare, but "Goodfellas" is probably the more accurate, street-level view of what that life actually is.

One detail I just realized. When Karen asks Henry "what do you do?" in the club, after being impressed by all his connections and influence, he replies "what?" and leans in like he couldn't hear her over the noise. He heard the question, I'm sure, but on instinct, Henry pretends he didn't, just to buy a couple seconds to come up with a convincing lie. It's so smooth that I never even noticed little things like that before.

I think Goodfellas is my favorite Martin Scorcese movie. Definitely one of my favorite gangster movies of all time. A Bronx Tale is also super awesome. A little different from Goodfellas story wise. I've heard that a few things in this movie were a little exaggerated. For example the prison scene where they're practically living in the own little apartment within the prison eating pasta, steak, lobsters, and wine. I think "wiseguys" had it easier in prison than most people but from what I've heard not that easy. Joe Pesci definitely steals the spotlight in this movie. He's definitely a guy you would fear despite of his size. Please watch more Mafia movies Mary.

I read a lot about Henry Hill. I found it funny in the move he had two daughters. When in fact he had one daughter Gina, and two sons, Gregg and Justin Hill. Justin was from his other relationship to Lisa Caserta, from 2006 till Henry's death in 2012. He was married with Karen Hill from 1965 to 1989. But their divorce wasn't finalized until 2002. He then married his second wife Kelly Alor from 1990 to 1996 He ran with the Lucchese crime family of New York City from 1955 until 1980. After he was arrested on narcotics charges is when he became an FBI informant. Henry and his family went into the witness protection program, until he got busted for cocaine trafficking in a federal court in Seattle and expelled from the witness protection program. Henry died at the age of 69, from heart failure, June 12, 2012 . Karen is still alive at the age of 76 and continues to use an alias as do her two children. Gregg and Gina. They released a book in 2004, titled On the Run: A Mafia Childhood. There's much more but I'll leave that up to you to look the rest of it up". Thanx for your reaction, take care..xx

'Goodfellas' is based on "Wiseguy", a non-fiction book by Nicholas Pileggi who did a lot of research including interviews with Henry Hill. (Pileggi also co-wrote the screenplay for the film.) Pileggi's wife was screenwriter/director Nora Ephron known for writing movies like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle". Ephron also wrote the comedy film "My Blue Heaven" starring Steve Martin as a gangster living in the suburbs as part of the witness protection program. She based the story on some of the same research and notes that Pileggi used for "Wiseguy" and 'Goodfellas". So....in a way, 'My Blue Heaven' could be seen as a sequel to 'Goodfellas' showing the life Henry Hill lived after he entered witness protection. The Lufthansa heist was a robbery at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 11, 1978. An estimated $5.875 million (equivalent to $23.3 million in 2020) was stolen, with $5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry, making it the largest cash robbery committed on American soil at the time.[1] Jimmy Burke, a Lucchese crime family associate, was reputed to be the mastermind of the robbery, but he was never officially charged in connection with the crime. Burke is also alleged to have either committed or ordered the murders of many of those involved in the months following the robbery to avoid being implicated in the heist.[2] The only person convicted in the robbery was Louis Werner, an airport worker who helped plan the heist.[2] The money and jewelry were never recovered. The heist's magnitude made it one of the longest-investigated crimes in the United States; the latest arrest associated with the robbery was made in 2014, which resulted in acquittal.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It feels so familiar and realistic to what I went through in the past. Not saying I was in the mafia or anything, just drug dealing and robbery with a group of my childhood friends. Things spiral out of control fast and bad things happen. I ended up throwing away my phone and moving to a different city because things were getting dangerous. What's funny is that it all started by my friend asking me to drive him somewhere and it turned out to be a robbery of a drug dealer - which turned into a year long drug dealer robbery spree. It was strangely addictive.

You should check out 'Cop Land' from 1997. Both Ray Liotta and De Niro reunite but with both much smaller parts. Stallone is the main star in it and IMO it's his 3rd best character out of his entire filmography. Rocky and Rambo being the other two.

This is one of my favorite Scorsese films. If you liked it, it is the first part of an unofficial trilogy with Casino and The Irishman.

Millers Crossing is an excellent offbeat artistically executed gangster film by the Coen Brothers.

Henry outlived every single one of those in that gang. He outlived them to the point that hose who took over from them cancelled the hit on Henry since he was of no bother to them

What's funny is that the movie skips over the part where Henry first tried to leave the mob life at 18 by joining the Army. But while in the Army he couldn't leave his street life behind and began loansharking, gambling, and at one point got drunk and stole a Sheriff Deputy's car - which got him discharged and he ended up back with the mob.

I absolutely lost it when he handed the gun to her and your grey cat had a shocked look on it's face and then just looked and you and left.

If you want to learn more about the aftermath in witness protection, I'd recommend the book On The Run: A Mafia Childhood by Gregg and Gina Hill (Henry and Karen's kids).

And you can watch/listen to him on The Howard Stern show for many years. He died a joke and a drunk but he had his comedic moments.

Enjoyed this reaction! You can find some clips of the real Henry Hill on The Howard Stern Show. There are quite a few here on YT. And yeah, Pesci makes a GREAT bad guy.

What's crazy is if you look up many of the big crimes (news articles) that happened in the film you can get a really interesting look into that time period from another angle.

Now you have to watch Casino. It's basically the same movie with the same actors but in a different setting.

The Godfather Trilogy is by far an incredible film experience. However, more honorable CRIME mentions are: Scarface, Casino, Blow, a Bronx Tale, American Me, Donnie Brasco, Dinner Rush* and American Gangster.

the kid that was shot was buried under the concrete floor of the bar they were in. Later they dug him up and buried him some where else, that is according to henry hill when talking on the howard stern show. I hate gangsters and mafia people for the nasty back stabbing they do

Yes Mary, this movie, 'Goodfellas' is actually based on a true events. Henry Hill passed away on June 12, 2012, complications of heart disease at a Los Angeles hospital in Los Angeles, California one day after his 69th birthday. Please do a reaction (if you haven't yet) on 'The Godfather' (1972) and 'The Godfather Part II (1974). And also 'Scarface' (1983) with Al Pacino. All three films are classic crime movies. Good reaction Mary!

You might enjoy watching the original Manchurian candidate. It is a psychological thriller. Angela Lansbury gives an Oscar worthy performance especially toward the end of the movie.

If you want to know more you should read the book this movie is based off of "Wiseguy". It goes into a LOT more detail. Also there's a youtube channel by a guy named Michael Franzese. He's a reformed mobster who knew all those guys and told some stories about them. He says Tommy was WAY crazier than the movie portrays.

Another movie that Martin Scorsese and Nicholas Pileggi worked on together was Casino. You should react to that one too, another great movie.

Casino, The Departed and Black Mass (Departed has a character based on Whitey Bulger from Boston, played by Jack Nicholson, who was an Irish American gangster, Black Mass is actually about his gang), Johnny Depp plays Whitey Bulger and disappears into the role. All great gangster type movies. American Gangster is another excellent one, Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, an African American gangster.

Love your reactions. You should watch "Casino," about how the Mob (which, of course, does not exist) built the city of Las Vegas.
