My Favorite is "Batman: The Long Halloween" (2021); it's one of the Best DC Animated Movies IMO, and so good that it took 2 Parts to tell the whole Story!! Much about "The Long Halloween" focuses heavily on Organized Crime: Who and How they Impact or Influence the lives of everybody in Gotham City...
RIP, Ray Liotta (Henry Hill) RIP, Frank Vincent (Billy Batts) RIP, Paul Sorvino (Paul Cicero) They made this movie one of the best experiences of all time.
@@migiplayz91 Same! I guess he's not quite as famous as Paul Sorvino, but he was in The Sopranos and everything! I don't recall seeing Sorvino in anything since maybe Romeo + Juliet!
The young boy with the sicilian name. De niros son. In real life did the exact opposite in real life & destroyed everything he had. Including all respect.
To round out your Joe Pesci experience you must watch _My Cousin Vinny._ Pesci is great in it, but the real standout is Marissa Tomei, in her Oscar-winning role as his fiancé.
And I was worried that there weren’t going to be any good reactions today, and then Jen comes through with the clutch. Thanks so much for reacting to this absolute classic film! The soundtrack is also a banger.
@@jenmurrayxo definitely check King of Comedy (1980) starring Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis it's a different kind of Scorsese movie than his more well known offerings.
Picturing Jenny driving around in her gangster car always having a shovel in her trunk is the best antidepressant ever when you think about it and are having a tough day.
That one long shot is one of the most famous one take tracking shots in cinema history. I was waiting for you to notice while you were singing "....and then he kissed meeeeeee", and then you did. 🤣🤣🤣
“As far back as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a gangster.” The perfect words to start quite a tour de force of action, violence, and drama. RIP to Ray Liotta, Paul Sorvino, Frank Sivero, and all those who are gone! Highly recommend checking out Taxi Driver! Different from Scorsese’s gangster repertoire, and something completely amazing!!
This movie really draws you in. You see the attraction of the life even though you know it will end badly. This is not just a great gangster movie, but one of the greatest movies of all time.
4:10 one of my favorite moments of the movie happens right after that. The judge enters, takes one look at Henry's attourney who has a big smile on his face, then an almost resigned nod and a half-hearted "Counselor, proceed" from the judge them smash-cut to Henry leaving a free man. Brilliant
One of my all time favorite movies of any genre. Love the "Layla" montage showing all the bodies. Can't hear that song without thinking of dead bodies.
Other Scorsese greats: Raging Bull, The Aviator, Cape Fear, Taxi Driver, The Color Of Money. There's so many great films and most of them aren't about gangsters.
I don’t know if anyone ever notices, when Karen goes to see jimmy and he tells her he has dresses for her. The street signs say “ONE WAY” and “DON’T WALK “. I think Scorsese is saying that she was never going to come back if she went in. 🤔
The fact that Scorsese managed to take Joe Pesci - a pretty small, sweet-faced, lovable guy - and make him one of the most intimidating characters in cinema history says a LOT about his film making. The direction, the photography, the script... absolutely everything was on point for that scene.
If you've read the book, the real Tommy was 100 times the monster that Pesci portrayed. He was a big hulking dude that was pretty much descibed as a homicidal maniac. The real guys name was Tommy Desimone.
The real Henry Hill used to call the Howard Stern show sometimes. He was a tortured miserable awful person in real life who died an addict and unhappy. The guy "Spider" they killed was never found and his family still has no closure. Hill knew where they put that poor guy and never told anyone. Spider's sister would call the show when Henry was on. He was a bad person but the calls to the show were entertaining.
Howard Stern is the Greatest Interviewer of All Time. And Credit to him, he stayed On Air during 9-11. he had listeners calling from right around the Towers!
Love the way you kept saying "sauce" with the accent! I wasn't sure you'd like this one, since you have such a hard time with horror movies, but I was glad to see that you not only enjoyed it but kept correctly guessing what was going to happen before it happened. Very impressive, Stacks!
There's a great comedy based on the same character (Henry Hill), that picks up essentially where this movie leaves off. It's called My Blue Heaven, and stars Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. It was released very shortly before Goodfellas, but is much less well known. It's a fun ride, and a humorous take on the witness relocation program and mob guys. Lol
Stacks Edwards was played by a young Samuel L. Jackson. And the "actor" who played the FBI agent at the end was actually the real life FBI agent who worked with Henry.
An absolutely wonderful (non-gangster) Martin Scorsese directed film is "HUGO" It is one of the most cinematically beautiful films I have ever seen. Family friendly and perfect for your channel, enjoy!
Another great non-gangster Scorsese, but still a period piece, but not family-friendly is Age of Innocence with Daniel Day Lewis. Wonderfully mesmerizing! (And now since I mention it, it's probably time for a rewatch.)
Goodfellas is a good contender for the greatest movie of the 90s, along with Pulp Fuction, Three Colors Blue, Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, etc. Ohhh you definitely need to watch Godfather part II, that's a must!
My favorite gangster flicks are from the Precode era. The Public Enemy, Little Cesar, Beast of the City, and Manhattan Melodrama. You could also try some of the Bogart movies like Petrified Forest, High Sierra, The Roaring Twenties, Key Largo, and Dead End. Also, Jennypenny could work as a gangster name.
There’s a fun story from former mob boss Michael Franzese, when he took his wife to see this movie and was playing it cool until they actually name dropped him in the bar scene. He immediately told his wife “we’re leaving”
Some of the scenes in this film are some of the most iconic of all-time. Such a masterpiece in terms of first person storytelling and pacing. I love Godfather 2. It's a much slower paced film but the two different story lines paralleling each other is and always will be a classic.
I like that this was the film where we finally get to see Paul Sorvino as a badass. For 2 decades before, he was always cast as the “frustrated supervisor” type role. Usually, he was a police commissioner or a bureaucrat who had just had too much and was praying for just a few stress free days. Although, he did shine in the early 80s in the film adaptation of the play “That Championship Season.” That play was his passion project. He was in the Broadway cast, the film, and even directed the remake in the late 90s. Both versions of the film adaptation are awesome, btw.
Another movie you might want to check out is Mean Streets. Its an early low budget masterpiece by Scorsese that is both his first gangster movie and his first movie with Deniro who frickin knocks it out of the park. This movie sets up the iconic collaboration between Deniro and Scorsese that is actually still going on today. And then of course theres Taxi Driver, which is not gangster so much but does show us the seedy underbelly of life on the streets with gangsterism in it.
Henry Hill never admits to killing anybody, because he couldn't get immunity for that. I read the book years ago (before the movie came out), its an interesting read. For another take on this character, check out 'My Blue Heaven' with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, its a comedy about a gangster in witness protection, also inspired by Henry Hill's story.
Jen, please don't take this the wrong way. But honestly I kind of consider you a " Good Fella " every once and a while you show your " bad streak " heist's , lairs , fat stacks...and so on. Always here, love your reactions! Once again thank you...Eric
@@tomhoffman4330 Hi Tom, once again thanks for the heads up. I'm surprised that you didn't mention F&F it is also considered an organized crime genre of films.💥
@@e.d.2096 You're Welcome, as always...and, You have NO idea how far the F&F has come since those early days. The "Fast Family" has gone up against quite a few Crime Bosses, but after the 5th Movie...everything goes to another Level!
At the beginning while introducing the wise guys they said “ Michael Franchese” that’s Michael Frances that has a RU-vid channel now. He said he had to leave the theatre when him and his GF at the time saw it because she didn’t know what he did
10/10 In one word: perfection Needs to be seen to be believed; in one word: perfection. Every frame, every voice-over, every song - it all comes together at the exact right moment to create the perfect film experience. This film makes you really understand and feel what makes the American mafia so compelling; in the eyes of a kid, who was unfortunate enough to grow up in a tough neighborhood, those gangsters are rock stars. Live fast, die young - but when you die, it ain't gonna be of a glamorous suicide or drug overdose - the ending will be brutal, ugly and sad. And it may very well be one of your best friends that will blow your brains out. I'll never get tired of watching Goodfellas; the entertainment value of this film is just amazing. It doesn't happen very often that every person involved in the process of making a film is at the peak of his/her game. And rarely do art and entertainment come together the way they did here. Storytelling with impeccable pacing, this is what it's like when a master composer conducts his masterpiece. All hail the king; the most versatile and talented filmmaker of his generation: Martin Scorsese. My vote: 10 out of 10
One of the all time rewatch movies. Doesn’t matter where it is, if I see it on tv, at any point, I’m watching it. Such a great movie. And I love how the music mostly matches up with the era & I think that really underscores the wonderful pacing. Each of the “eras” is defined and gets you invested in each piece & also the overall story. Epic film.
Two Observations about “Jenny Stacks” 1. She is all about the plan-planning for any venture is part of her DNA….”not having a plan is a plan to fail…” Jenny Stacks quote😅 2. Jenny Stacks is all about face validity…. A hero or tough guy needs to look the part… good shape with muscles and good abs… as Jenny once could have said “it’s not just about the steak, there needs to be lots of sizzle.”
I don't know if it's been posted already, but $420,000 in 1967 (the Air France heist) would be about $3.8 million today. The Lufthansa heist was $5.875 million in 1978, about $27.333 million today. Jimmy never got out of prison; he died of cancer in 1996.
Jen that cute little old lady was Martin Scorsese's mother Jen that closeup of De Niro you liked during editing of that scene De Niro just told Scorsese and the editor one suggestion Cream as in the band for the background music. Those opening chords of Sunshine of your Love were a perfect choice
Scorsese does other non-gangster films. Two of the best are Taxi Driver-written by the brilliant Paul Schrader-and The Age of Innocence, based on the Edith Wharton novel. It’s worth mentioning, too, that the unique look of Goodfellas is due to the cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, who worked with Scorsese on many of his films.
As a lil piece of trivia, the tall guy with the beard in the “Shine box” scene is Vito Picone from the 50’s doo-wop group The Elegants , had their hit “Little Star.”
A film filled with some greats, De Niro , Liotta , Sorvino , Pesci and last but not least Murray as Jenny Stacks ! You are one of the stars when you do these Jen . If you like Ray Liotta you should check out Field of Dreams ., but I really wanted to thank you for another great beginning to the weekend . You're a good habit to have !!
Scorsese is the best at storytelling in the gangster genre. Great film, great director. Great reaction, Jen! AKA Jenny Cateyes AKA Jenny Shirt Suit AKA Jenny Wisdom Nugget
Hi Jen, another gangster movie I highly recommend for you to react to is: The Untouchables (1987) set in 1930's Chicago and also starring Robert De Niro as the legendary gangster Al Capone & Kevin Costner as the Treasury agent Elliot Ness, who has sworn to bring him down. Sean Connery co-stars as an Irish cop who teams up with Ness. Please react to asap :)
Tuned in the second I noticed this. Casino was pretty good, but this is a classic. I expect some shocked eyes behind those Serious Girl Spectacles on this one. 😮😯😳😱
One of my absolute favourite films ever. I love Scorsese. Great reaction. You could watch. The colour of money, Hugo, the wolf of wall Street, the departed, the aviator, shutter Island, taxi driver, cape fear, casino, raging bull.........
You can the first reactor to do Donnie Brasco and everyone will cheer! I don't know why everyone sleeps on the classic, it's always heavily requested too...
When I was a kid, my mom decided to go back to school to finish her degree. So on Tuesday and Thursday nights, Dad had us, so our Tuesday ritual was going to the local second-run dollar theater. It was a small 3-screen theater, and sometimes all the flicks would be R-rated. That was the situation the night he took me to see this. I remember on the drive home, he told me “Don’t tell your mother I let you watch this,” but I thought it was awesome. Even to this day, it’s one of my desert island top 5 flicks.
"....and their was Jenny shovels, I mean this broad was so use to doing hits she would drive around with the shovel already in the car....hits for her just became normal"
There are tons of Scorsese movies that are legendary. In particular, I'd recommend Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) for his earliest award winner, a drama starring the mom from The Exorcist, plus Silence (2016), a religious drama starring Andrew Garfield, and Gangs of New York (2002), which will give you a hard taste of Americanism lol. Further shout outs to Taxi Driver (1976) and The Departed (2006). If you become tempted to watch Scorsese's remake of Cape Fear (1991), please watch the original (1962) first!! It'd make for a great side by side comparison.
I know Scorsese gets pegged as a director of gangster movies, but out of 26 films only 6 are about gangsters. He's done a musical, comedies and documentaries. Unfortunately, if you only learn about movies from RU-vid you'll only ever hear about his gangster movies. The Scorsese movies I'd recommend (besides Means Streets, Taxi Driver and Raging Bull) you check out are The King of Comedy, After Hours, The Age of Innocence and Kundun.
Jen, I'm gonna watch your reaction, ya just gotta stop bustin' balls! I saw this movie in 1990 at the movie theater. I couldn't stop thinking about it for many weeks after. I saw it in the theater another ten times and probably 50 to 75 times since then.
No Jenny, Jimmy Conway, whose real name was Jimmy Burke, died in prison in 1996, 7.5 years before he was eligible for parole. Henry Hill left the witness protection program and was a frequent guest on the Howard Stern Show before he died in 2012. He struggled with alcoholism and was often drunk when he was calling into Howard's show. You can find some of the clips here on RU-vid.
I recommend the following Martin Scorsese films: *Gangs of New York *Raging Bull *Taxi Driver *King of Comedy *The Aviator *The Departed *Shutter Island *The Wolf of Wall Street *The Irishman *Silence *Hugo And the film that started his career: Mean Streets
@@jenmurrayxo suhweet forward momentum! Imma chekk yo reaction to that out! Stay tuned for rest of em - especially Taxi Driver, The Aviator and Shutter Island. This one was great. But remember Rats can’t be on top of the food chain on the Gangster life style. My favorite gangster movies are Hoffa(1992) The Departed, Dick Tracy(1990) and American Gangster(Denzel Washington).
Before Jen brought up "stacks" for a nickname, I was thinking "Jen Two Stacks" or "Jenny Champagne". As for other Scorsese films, I would watch Gangs of New York. Though the name may indicate otherwise, it is not a mob/wiseguy movie. You will also be treated to a tour de force performance by Daniel Day-Lewis.
"They really had different prison for gangsters?" That's part of why "don't snitch" was so effective - everyone *expected* to do some time and if you did they *took care* of you. First of all, you get big shot lawers that get you the best deal possible without snitching, and then inside, you got special treatment, protection, contraband, hookers for conjugal visits, if you were supporting a family working for them, they'd set your family up with a stipend until you got out; aside from the lousy scenery, it was kind of a vacation for them
The scary thing about Tommy is that the real-life gangster he's based on was even more pyscho that in the film. Dude shot a random stranger on the street just to test out his new gun.
This is one of the great ones if I can borrow a line from "The Bronx Tale" which is still one of my all time favorites. You are knocking them off one by one... OGJen!
Martin Scorsese Films: The Departed, Gangs Of New York, The Irishman (all gangster films). There's also The Wolf Of Wall Street, The Aviator (Howard Hughes biopic), Hugo, Raging Bull, The Color Of Money, Uncut Gems, Shutter Island, Taxi Driver. All great and influential films.
