The $1,299 Chromebook Pixel cost the same as the new MacBook. It comes with a higher resolution display that is touch screen (touch screen is very expensive). It also comes with a powerful Core i7 CPU which can last up to 12 Hours of battery. Actually, iVerge said when they tested theirs it was 14 hours. So you definitely don't have to worry about battery life as apposed to the 9 hours (Apple claimed). You're also going to get double the RAM (16GB). This comes with two USB-C on each side and also regular USB 3.0 ports along with a SDXC card reader. A 720P Wide Angle camera, the MacBook's 480P camera is worthless, they shouldn't have put anything, anyone using it would need to buy a new one which means more $$$. Then you have the X factor, you can install Linux and even Mac OSX on the ChromeBook. But even though it beats the new MacBook in almost every department, like the new MacBook it's not a product I'd personally buy. I prefer a more powerful computer as I do a lot of graphic design and video production, so this would be something I would rarely use. If I wanted to browse the web I'd just use a tablet.
Having read many of the comments here, I think some people are missing the point of the Chromebook Pixel. It’s well suited for two purposes: to be a showcase vehicle for Google Chromebooks (sort of like a concept car at an auto show) or, as Mike pointed out, for developers who have to work for hours within Chrome OS and they want high quality hardware to do so. For the masses, however, a $200-$400 Chromebook is more than enough for their purposes and shelling out $1,000 would be crazy. I think Google is already well aware of this.
ron bZoom Exactly, and since nobody else shared Google's ideal hardware vision for Chrome OS, Google has done it themselves. It also makes it a sustainable effort without threatening 3rd party manufacturers who are making far more mainstream options.
***** Another point that I never hear mentioned; I'm a business person with an investment in the Google/Chrome infrastructure. I'm glad to have a more "upscale" hardware option. I don't code. I'm not a developer. Frankly, I feel a bit awkward slipping a plastic Chromebook that looks like it was made by Fisher Price out of my bag in a client meeting. The intended use of a Pixel? I'm sure not. However, it works for me.
Developers who want to work exclusively with Chrome OS is massively niche though. It'd be way more appealing to them if Google built Android Studio/JAVA development over Chrome OS (yeah I know there are some web IDE's but from what I can gather they don't seem great).
ron bZoom I agree with you on one thing the chromebook is suited better to the lower end budget market, mainly due to the fact that Chromebooks don't really need to have great specs to work smooth and thats the charm of them.
5:05 "I didn't know it had an issue until I compared it to the new one"...welcome to modern technology, where you have problems you didnt even knew existed
***** Almost all the things you can do on Chrome OS, you can already do on a normal browser. Also, the touchscreen is useless and adds on to the already very high price. A normal Chromebook might be a reasonable choice for some people, but I don't see how this one is. A smarter choice is to get a computer with windows or mac so you are not restricted in what you can do, and the price is fair.
***** If you watch a MacBook review, they constantly say it's not for power. Also, don't be so aggressove calling me retarded. Just respectfully disagree with someone else's opinion.
Why would you ever need more than one port if your just doing video editing or basic Office crap? If you really need more than one port, the Macbook isn't made for your demographic. Sorry.
GamingRisen I'm skeptical about the battery life; USB port used up. I need to plug in my mouse for Vegas or whatever; oh wait, _that's the only USB port_. And no I'm not a fan of wireless mouse. I have to project my presentation from a projector to a w- wait, _no DisplayPort?_ *_no HDMI even?_*, what is this 2001? I'm not going to shed another $80 just to get a necessary feature that should've been there in the first place. Not even one expansion slot, no ethernet port for direct connection, no regular USB 3.0/2.0.
why couldn't Dell come up with this hardware design instead of google. This hardware design, with Dell's infiniti display with windows 10 pro on it....would be my ideal windows laptop.
Thank you! Im going into 8th grade and I'm gonna need a laptop for High School pretty soon and I am loving the Chrome Book. Its really cheap too. Looking forward to it!
It's to showcase the finest of Chrome OS, and for people who want a premium Chromebook, and yes those people exists. There are probably other reasons as well. One thing like developers come in to mind.
Jacob eMatt So...can't they just use a regular middle -end laptop? One with Intel's is or AMD's A 6/8 and 6-8 Gb RAM , etc....Some of them are just $ 400 or $ 600 ....
Damn, the Chromebook pixel 2 looks like a great product. Id buy one but for one its hard to find and the second reason I cant buy it is because the only ones I find are $2000.00 and up. Yeah $2000.00 for a Chromebook is crazy. I just decided to buy the ChromeBook pixel one refurbished so that should be neat to play with when it gets here(: Anyways great reviews like always and hope you have a great day!
"Now with this multi-touch trackpad you can actually use a 4 finger gesture to get an overview of all your open windows and there's a dedicated button for that as well." Oh I'm done. I'm so done. Dear Google, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Sincerely, A MacBook user PS. All the square edges make the chassis look horrendous.
Just to be clear, not bashing the review (which was excellently done as usual for this channel), just the blatant pilfering by Google of software features that aren't common enough to be considered an 'industry standard'. Mission control was one of the reasons I fell in love with Mac OS, and for it to be unashamedly ripped off and used in a Google product, as well as the 'shelf'' (read: 'dock') is annoying.
***** I'd actually put serious consideration into your opinion were it not for the swearing and the use of terms like 'crApple turd', (bet you had a good laugh to yourself when you thought of that one), it's a pity you have to rely on using language like that to try and make your point =/
***** Also you keep calling me 'kid' but judging by the maturity of your language I'd say you're more deserving of that title. If you're 25 (my age) or older and you still think terms like 'crApple turd' are funny/valid, I feel for the people who have to interact with you on a daily basis. I didn't come here to start an argument but evidently no-one on RU-vid is allowed to have an opinion without getting slated by people like yourselves who spend a significant amount of their energy trying to put others down.
I am an absolute fan of chrome os and I own a samsung chromebook. To be honest, I do everything with it. I don't use my windows pc anymore. The chromebook pixel would be, for me, the ultimate buy, but at that price tag, I don't have the means to make such a purchase. Steal, I think that the chromebook pixel is the best laptop there is and I thank you for that unboxing.
ChromeOS is fantastic for what it does but this is definitely an overkill. On the other hand Google seem to have some pretty massive plans coming up for the OS and play store integration is just the first step. So the idea is to buy future iterations instead.
There's literally no point for even an i5 in this. A core M would be better suited for this, it would need no fan making it silent and cut down on size, save battery, etc. why would they ever put an i7 in this? That being said, if it had like a 256ssd and Windows instead, this would be the best ultrabook I've ever seen. I dunno why, the design is more beautiful than say even a MacBook or sell xps.
Great Review! Chrome OS in 2015 are very capable OS because nowadays there are tons of apps or software available in a browser from office documentation to video and photo editing! Buy this for the gorgeous display, rugged premium metal build quality and excellent processor for smooth computing experience...
+Kian Gurney I don't know it look like some one went to the future from the 1980s and then went back with all the pieces he needs apart from the screen and ended up with that.
Thank you for the video. It is a reference product. Not designed to sell to the masses. They want to see the technology implemented, and decided to make some of them also. Same Philosophy as the Nexus Q. Which was definitely an experiment.
Love it, I will love to buy one. for now I just have the Asus Chromebook 13.3 Inches 32GB storage and 4GB memory Ram version. but this chrome pixel is so beautiful, I hope one day I could afford one.
I personally belive that chromebooks should not be $1200, im using a chromebook that is 6 times cheaper and im getting a pretty smooth experience. Good review
During the first half of the video, I noticed a couple of sound feedback similar to that when you hit the microphone. I'm not really sure if I made sense. It's not a big deal, though. Great video as usual.
Still 1000$ for i5 with 8GB of ram would be ok, but 32GB ssd and being limited to Chrome OS? I think better choice is 1000$ laptop with same specs, biger drive and use Linux or Windows and you can do more work with it. I know it has really good build and sleek design but still I would expect less price on laptop that doesn't allow me as much I would want because OS limitation
Well the Chromebook pixel is not marketed towards consumers its more for people who want to code for Chrome OS. Anyways if you wanna find a good deal on a Chromebook you should look into the Chromebook pixel, it sells for about $330.00 refurbished on ebay
Thanks Mike! The Macbook Air the MBP and now this unboxing and review. The products comes out and you review them instantly. You are great youtuber!! :)
***** I've been a long time fan of your channel. I find your videos nicely edited ( I wish I had your skills), and weirdly more interesting than other channels. Keep up the amazing content :)
Seems nice for no problem web browsing and streaming but not to useful if you want/need to download anything. By the way, real fan of your videos, they're the best.
I'd consider this for 1K. You are paying for the hardware and amazing build quality. Chrome OS is all I need since everything I want to do that isn't video game related can be done on the web. If I do feel like using a full OS I could install Ubuntu EASILY. Haters are simply hating on a product that isn't for them. Do you need to run downloaded programs? Great, chrome book isn't for you now move along and stop clicking on these videos, you clearly know what a chromebook can and can't do so don't bother people. It is like someone with a Xbox one bashing the fire TV for not playing AAA video games.
Hey Mike... I've been following you for the past 2 years. This is my first comment on your video. I need to know this... Why is everybody stops thinking something new except Apple...? Every faint tech industry in the world is copying Apple. Even the packaging, power adapters, etc., shame on you google, Samsung and a lot of companies that are copying the design from Apple.
Anandh Azh Apple is a very design-centric company and their culture is built around creating alluring designer products. And like all cutting edge fashion and design, it always influences consumer aspirations and the industry responds by following those trends. Most companies don't have the culture or design expertise to innovate or set design trends like Apple.
I know, right! Apple's Packaging are so good. I always fall in love with there products when I visit their website. They make it look so beautiful. +Detroitborg
Yeah, I kinda thought that way too ***** until I really took a good hard look at what I was doing 98% of the time on my laptop and realized I seldom left or did anything outside of the _Chrome_ browser (or _Firefox_ ). I've got an ASUS Chromebook now and love the thing. I'm budgeting for a *PIXEL 2* ... it's just too good to pass up.
Stephen Anderson but that much money? I need more out of a computer than just a browser though. And thats no where near enough memory for the price points they are asking. I wouldn't mind spending $200-$250 on a Chromebook but not $999-$1299. That's just a bit ridiculous.
***** yeah, I hear ya. The price is a bit steep (_my ASUS was only $300_), but as Chromebooks go the *PIXEL* is the best of the best and it would look great sitting on the passenger seat of the _Tesla Roadster_ I don't have. :-)
I agree this product doesn't make sense, but I love using it. It's gorgeous hardware and it's revealing just how little I need outside of the web browser and Google services. The only thing I'm really missing is more powerful video and photo editing, which I generally don't need on the go anyway.
this laptop is really expansive considering that this industry is evolving so fast, Apple just presented their new Macbook, and obviously is years in future from this notebook, but their need of making the new macbook with a lack of ports might be a problem to those who are still with devices a bit oldie, that wireless technologies are not in their hands' posibilities.
*ATTENTION EVERYONE: THE CHROMEBOOK PIXEL IS MADE FOR DEVELOPERS, NOT CONSUMERS. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE; YOU'RE NOT MEANT TO ACTUALLY BUY IT.* The Chromebook Pixel is not sold in stores, it's not widely advertised, nor are many of them even being manufactured. I think Google only makes a few thousand Chromebook Pixels at most. Regular consumers can buy them at Google's store but it's main purpose is to be used as a reference device for Chrome OS developers. While Chrome OS is a very minimalist operating system that doesn't necessarily require such high-end specs, it's good for developers to be able to take advantage of high-end specs. Already Adobe and Google have partnered to bring Photoshop Streaming to Chrome OS. Whether you like Chrome OS or not, you can't deny that it's a growing platform that's becoming more popular every year. If you have no use for it, fine, but plenty of people do. With the growing popularity of Chrome OS devices, it makes sense that Google will try to push its limits with devices like the Pixel so developers can make attempts to see where the platform can go.
This laptop is useless...... It's just a web machine an can go on the web like any laptop can do. No need for all that power and to purchase this is a waste of money. Get a cheaper full fledged PC. Trust me, it's worth it.
they are taking your money for a future plans to take over Microsoft and Apple laptops, yes this is useless unless you are just using your laptop for browsing which they are alot that needs some google apps with a chrome browser and that's it. but there is no reason for i7 for that
First of all, there are Chromebooks that are way less expensive than the Pixel 2. Secondly, you are correct in saying that a PC can do the same thing. However, what you're missing the point of why people use Chromebooks. PC's are more complex, harder to maintain, and less secure than a Chromebook. And by nature, they will get slower and buggier over time. But if you're the type of person who downloads exe files or has the need for specific Windows functions, then a Chromebook is not for you. But don't dismiss it because it doesn't do everything a PC does, especially if you don't need all that extra nonsense that Windows has. If all you do is browse, listen to music, watch media, and many other web-based activities (which is what most PC owners do), a Chromebook is all you need. It's much faster, doesn't slow down and get buggy like PC's do, doesn't require virus or malware software, is more reliable than any Windows machine can be, is faster, and it's updates automatically. For what Chromebooks do, it's a far more superior and much less troublesome than any PC. And with more powerful web apps to do more PC-like tasks and the impending arrival of Google's Play Store, there will never be the need for a Windows machine ever again. I get my work and play done much more efficiently. But yeah, you can do those things in Windows too. But with my experience, they're not worth it over the long run. After at least a year, I've always had to start doing some form of maintenance and upkeep and I eventually start spending more time trying to keep it running than actually using it. Not for me but then that's just me. #WindowsNeverAgain
I bought the Pixel 2 after making the switch from a macbook air. So far I dont regret the decision one bit. Hardware wise everything is better on the Pixel. I was going to make the upgrade to apples new macbook but i couldn't deal with the core m. Even for just word processing and web browsing you can notice the difference in power.
Great overview. Gorgeous design. I prefer this industrial design over the apple MBP and MBA designs. The deal breaker is its a Chromebook. I'm not on board with the Chrome OS paradigm.
You can go into developer mode and make it download ubuntu, then you can easily install it and you can basically swap between chrome os and ubuntu by pressing a button on runtime, in less then half a second. It's amazing.

I watch a lot of reviewers' videos and I guess you're on the polite side Lol haha (it's a compliment don't worry :)) Your reviews are great. Btw, nice ending with the chrome lights! Sunch detail :D
Great video Mike but can you please try and sort out the mic issues jumping between sounds eg in some b roll it sounds very condensed then it jumps to a wider sound, small thing but thought I should say! Great vid
Excellent review as always. Not sure I'd actually buy a Chromebook though since I only use my computers to do photo/video editing and use my iPad to do pretty much everything else. But I know a lot of people that have some and are perfectly happy since they don't do anything but use online services.
I accept this machine for what it is, it's a streamlined webmachine aiming to make the online experience as seamless as possible. Not everyone runs photoshop or plays games on their PC. If you just use it to type and browse the web, this is great. Granted that you have easy access to wifi.
Hey just a quick suggestion, I really like your videos. Although you could improve by using less fades between shots, there are way to many I the video. Or at least change up the effect instead of using the same one. Thanks
Looks stunning, but is it worth the money with its limitations? If you did not have the ability to get everything you have, and had to be budgeting, would you get this?
What is it with Google trying to make a premium laptop with good specs that runs an OS that can’t take advantage of the hardware? Do they really think that the third time’s a charm with the Pixelbook?
