I think you have to take this with a grain of salt. Apple Maps may be better in the US/Canada, but in Europe is another whole story. I live in Spain and G. Maps is way better, IMO

I live in Germany and we got Lookaround with Apple Maps last year. And it is insanely good. They have mapped every little road even really remote ones in forrests. Most of the images in Google Street View in Germany are from 2011 or 2012 so they are really old. And navigation is basically the same between the two. So I switched to Apple Maps last year and I'm really happy with it.

Being able to switch between route overview and focused view is also easier on Apple Maps.

I HATED this about Google Maps. However, I checked and you can change this in Google Maps to have the destination always at the top. (However I still far prefer Apple Maps for two main reasons. Context directions ie. "The second left after the stop sign" vs Googles 100 ft type of directions. Apple's is far superior. Directions: SOOOOOO many time Google maps tries to be too smart, only to be extremely stupid. It will take you on side streets and back ways because in theory it is a shorter distance, however, there are so many turns and stops and it is usually through neighborhoods with speed limits and bumps that ends up being far slower and convoluted. This has happened for myself and when I'm in Rideshare ALOT. Many times it takes you through parking lots instead of streets. It is beyond stupid.

One thing I think should be emphazised is just how much data google collects when you use their services.. Apple actually annonymizes location services information like routing, traffic or nearby points of interest. They also have something called fuzzing which I didn't look into very much tho it's supposed to hide where you want to go I think. Apple Maps also stores the information where you have been locally on your phone and any info that is going out to a server is disassociated from your appleID and annonymized. It sure isn't the most private App out there but it beats google by miles! Just imagine all the data they collect from google maps users...

I work for a public water utility and sometimes we have to assess damages from water leaks to sidewalks, roads, etc. I’ll use google street view to find out if the damage was there before our leak or if a meter box was covered up by landscaping or pavement. Being able to time travel in street view has helped us a lot. One nice thing you didn’t mention about Apple Maps is that you can share your ETA with your friend. So if you two are meeting up by a certain time, you can rest assured they won’t be late and you two can arrive around the same time to eliminate waiting. I use google maps for 99% of my directions in my area. I’ve noticed that G Maps is more accurate than Apple Maps when it comes down to traffic and arrival times. Google will have you take certain side streets to avoid traffic where Apple will have you stay on main roads and avoid neighborhoods. One thing I really do like about google maps is the ability to start and cancel a route with just one button. That is very important to me, especially when this app is designed to be used while in motion, such as driving a car. That means I can tap the phone or infotainment screen on Apple CarPlay one time whereas I have to press the screens two times on Apple Maps which costs so much time and attention away from the road.

It does this either through a transit API or more accurately crowd sourced data. It also shows you how crowded the trains are and calculates which train route is faster through transfer based on the real time positions of the trains. Also it mixes transit options, so you can take a train to a ferry to a train. or if the place you are going is in a transit desert, it gives you transit options as close as possible and estimates the Lyft price for each route so you can pick the best one for your wallet from whichever transit station Can someone who commutes with public transit with apple tell me how it works

I work from home, I don't travel that much and when I get in the car there's 90% chance I know where I'm going or how to get there with little to no assistance from a maps app. Apple Maps is my default but I'll venture into Google Maps from time to time (probably less than a dozen times in a year). Of course it's not surprising that Google was the winner as their entire business model is based on getting every scrap of information they can to keep their advertising business model afloat. As much as I love Apple products and services I don't think Apple Maps can ever catch up to Google Maps simply because it's not a core function of Apple's business. I'm sure Apple has a crack team of talented engineers and marketing experts working daily to improve the experience but it's never going to be as robust as Google's because unlike Google they don't rely on the maps app to be a primary profit center compared to Google.

You forgot one really useful feature on Apple Maps where you can actually share your trip info with your friends/family so they can check at any moment to see where you are. Especially a road trip to visit family who lives hours away from you. If you share your trip info, they can check where you are and how much longer it will take you to arrive without having to worry and call every hour or so to check up on your safety. It's also great when trying to plan ahead on cooking diner if you can see exactly how much time your guest is going to arrive. Also Apple Maps work in China, Google doesn't.

Apple Maps has sucked for far too long, but last Fall I made the full switch because the experience was way better than Google Maps and Waze. Where Waze relies heavily on user reports to know that roads are closed, Apple pulls from sources to automatically know or detect that roads are closed. It got to the point that Apple Maps was getting me to my destination faster than Waze every single time. When I went to Japan with my family we relied heavily on Google Maps for transit directions. It was fine but after 5 days we were tired of it underestimating transfer times and the alternate options weren’t great. The rest of the trip we used Apple Maps and we have no issues navigating Japan’s rail networks. We were even able to set preferences to use our Japan Rail Pass on the JR lines which saved us money over the metro lines often recommended by default on Google Maps. The Apple Maps experiences is also great here in NYC. The addition perk of having my Apple Watch buzz me before turns when using Apple Maps on my iPhone is also nice.

I have an iPhone but I’m team Google Maps all the way. I could literally make this comment thousands of words long, just about Google Maps lol. I live in Scotland and a lot of the Apple Maps features you mentioned don’t exist here - I didn’t even know Apple Maps had street view until right now. I mostly use Maps for looking up places before going there so things like street view, reviews, and house/building numbers are really useful. I also use it on the satellite setting because I prefer how it looks over the default and Google Maps’ satellite images are really good and clear. Apple Maps’ satellite images of my city are blurry and you can’t make out many details, although, they do seem to be more recent than Google’s satellite images so a point to them there. I don’t think Apple Maps will be winning me over any time soon unless they get as much street view coverage as Google and integrate reviews and photos within the app. The latter might well happen soon but unfortunately I don’t think they’ll be catching up to Google street view any time soon hahah

I for example prefer to make a 500m detour to a gym than go without menu for a restaurant etc. Just think about it and give it a try. Over all it's obvious that google maps are unparalleled and I'm a mac user since 40 years, no negative bias there. I think it's all about the area. The "level of detail" where Apple Maps tells you about all the crosswalks and lights signals to give you the context of where you have to turn. Or mapping out 3D models trees. Things like these are only available in like 40 - 50 cities, I imagine. Same goes to Google maps though like "immersive view" and all. But in your case apple maps is better in UX and LoD because you live where they have taken time to individually analyse building and area and surroundings and reconstruct their models in the app, therefore; the handsfree voice commands and directions. Otherwise where I live, I sometimes cannot even trust apple maps. Google maps despite having less details, still is better in like 2-3 million cities. That's why it must be very reliable for many many users compared to 40 - 50 cities. So Google Maps is better IMO if you're not in the big cities, navigating through them, or travelling across.

The reason there were undue U-turns in the navigation was probably due to either lane change route safety (feeling you may get into an accident ) or the fuel efficiency setting... As in it probably felt you wasted more fuel idling at a light than just making a u-turn. That's how i interpreted it when it happened to me on occasion.
@jaerg91
@jaerg91 Год назад
Fuel efficiency? You burn more fuel driving the car than staying still. Officers will keep their cars on while on parking because turning the car off and on will burn more fuel. This was really interesting. And I can give a perspective on what it's like managing business profiles on both platforms. While apple was the easiest to deal with in proving ownership and being able to access the profile to keep the business location up to date. Apple has this invisible grid thay is hard to move a business. Especially when it comes to fixing seo of a business. Google had hands down been the best and most accurate and crucial for business hits. They still dominate with hit results. The reporting from google about customer feedback and features are way better. Apple may be simple here but they were the hardest to get this up and running. So far Google has this one in the bag as the clear winner in the business management space.

One thing to not about Apple’s street view is that it’s actually more advanced. It actually treat things with depth meaning that you can tap a side of a building in the distance and it will take you to the point closest to it. It also makes movements seem more natural. I think this was done using a combination of LiDAR installed on the street view car and some computational depth calculation which I find really cool.

I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with Google Maps navigation. The first incident was probably the worst. I was driving down the interstate and decided to add a stop to a Sam’s Club to get some gas (had been in the area once before, so I was sort of familiar with how to get there already). Google had me get off the interstate one exit early even though Sam’s was very close to the next exit’s interchange. It had me go down some back road through the woods with a low speed limit. At one point, it told me to turn down a grassy path (not even a gravel/dirt road). I couldn’t even go that way because a tree was down, showing how infrequent that path gets used. I kept going straight passed more sketchy woods houses until I got to the back of the Sam’s parking lot. I was so blown away that that was the PREFERRED route Google Maps wanted to use. I could’ve just waited one more exit, turned left, immediately turned left again, and been where I wanted much quicker and so much easier. After a few more bad (but not quite so horrible) experiences with Google Maps navigation, I’ve swapped to using Apple Maps. However, I still search Google Maps if I want to find new places like restaurants since Apple Maps doesn’t always have everything on the map (like the places don’t show up in search, and scrolling over the location on the map doesn’t reveal anything there).
@cuginnico
@cuginnico Год назад
The main reason why I like Apple Maps over Google Maps is navigation on interstates or big highways because Apple Maps tells you based on your location in which lane you should be to avoid right/left turn only lanes or which is the recommended lane if you are approaching an exit. Something that Google Maps similarly does, but it is somewhat confusing for me when I am driving since it tells you for example " in 1.2mi be in this lane". It is a small thing, but I find it the compelling argument for me choosing Apple vs Google.

Tbh I always LOVE the style and presence of apple map, but google map has one feature that I can’t refuse: keep north up while routing. If Apple map can issue the new version with this feature, I will definitely use Apple map instead of google map. I think this feature helpful and reliable because keep north up is always the main character of map when map is initially invented. Keeping the north up makes me feel secured, since I’m aware of where I am (in terms of which part of city etc). I love this feature maybe because I’m learning geology in school and I always look the map that way, and once they turn to keep your direction up, I feel confused and uncomfortable. Besides, for the saved places, I’d say google map is much better, not because of the view, but because that one is able to make comment to his/her saved places. For example, if you really like a restaurant, you can not only save the restaurant, but also make comment on what is the best food in the restaurant. For the street view, I confirm that in major cities like LA New York or Chicago, it is much better. However I lived in Minneapolis but no street view is found in Apple map. I remembered that Apple map already took the pictures of these medium cities or small towns, but Idk why they still not public them.

I am on iOS Public Beta 3, have downloaded offline maps for two trips I've taken (one where there was very little cell service at all) and it has been super simple to use. This comes with Automatic updates (toggleable in settings) as well as being optimized for iPhone storage (toggleable in settings), taking up less space than when I tried it with Google Maps. Also, Apple Maps introduced a feature recently where you can use Look Around (street view) when walking and actually see directional elements implemented with AR. I, again, used it on a trip when exploring a new city and was able to easily locate shops, restaurants and more with this feature. I understand that this video can't be constantly updated but maybe a pinned comment or something in the description could disclose these new addons.

One feature that they both lack is a "Repeat Instruction" button (or gesture).* My car nav system has that and I use it all the time. I know where the button is and can tap it without taking my eyes off the road. So when I miss an instruction or even just want assurance as to what I need to do next, I can get that info instantly with my full focus still on the road. Ideally, the "Repeat Instruction" would be an easily executed gesture that you could perform without looking away from the road. Like a downward swipe, perhaps. I know you can use a voice command to request what your next instruction is, but personally I don't like using voice -- so maybe should just loosen up and get into voice commands. *P.S. If there actually is a "Repeat Instruction" button or gesture on either Google or Apple maps, please clue me in -- I've searched and searched for it.

To repeat the instruction in Google Maps you tap on the green instruction bar at the top. Only takes one tap, but if you've swiped ahead to future instructions, one tap on the top instructions bar takes you back to the current/upcoming instruction and then a second tap repeats the verbal instruction. This is on Google Maps v11.92 on a Pixel 4a 5G running Android 13. I'm not sure if it's the same on iOS because Google does do some things differently on iOS and I don't have any iOS devices to test. Hope this helps.
