You missed the biggest advantage of Waze. Thousands of dedicated volunteer map editors who live in the community they edit. The map is far more accurate plus road closures are posted and removed faster than Google (even though Google leaches the data with some lag). Recently in Northern Virginia the I-66 express lanes were opened and Waze was using it for routing the day it opened. The other nav apps took weeks to pick up the changes. If you're using an app for commuting in some urban hell hole then Waze is it, hands down.

Exactly my point. He missed out the most important advantage which is map accuracy. Being in Malaysia, google maps tend to bring you to some random forest and you are stuck out of no where. Waze actually gather data from other wazer and the location is much more accurate. Waze also will divert you to a different route if they found out traffic is building up ahead. Maybe google maps have this feature now but in the beginning, those who get screwed by google maps before won’t be bothered to get screwed the second time by google maps. Apple Maps doesn’t even worth to get mentioned here. They are so US centric that they are unusable outside the US. I think the only other country I would try using Apple Maps would be in China. That’s because I have no choice as google were blocked there.

On a Texas interstate a year or so ago, Waze instructed us to exit the main lanes and to follow a circuitous route through a small town, then reconnect with the main highway. At first, we were puzzled, but discovered later there was a major slowdown on the interstate (which we could not see when Waze sent us on the detour) and the alternate route moved us faster than if we had stayed on the highway. Kudos to Waze!

My wife had a similar experience. Waze told her to take a very odd route home, she declined and then got stuck in a massive traffic jam. Since then she never goes against Waze's recommendations. Its slightly longer with slower speed limits, but has way less traffic resulting a nicer, relaxing drive in comparison.

I think the biggest difference with maps is the navigation system itself. You can assimilate this with ants. When an ant moves forward, it leaves behind a trail of pheromones, which are detected by other ants. Over time, the passage that is the most marked will be the one that is the most used. Waze uses this system by placing a minus sign on the map when braking, and a plus sign when accelerating. This system gives you instant access to all traffic data (including traffic alerts), so you can choose the most optimized route. It's very effective in towns and cities, where roads and paths cross a lot, and I find that other gps systems are much less effective..

Hey bud, just offering a suggestion. Assimilate is usually used within the context of absorbing or taking something into something else, whether it's an individual ("he will assimilate new concepts in order to stay ahead of his peers") or a group ("the smaller tribe was assimilated by a larger tribe as resources dwindled"). The words or phrases you're looking for are probably: - "You can use ants as an analogy." - "This approximates the way ants behave." - "The concept is similar to how ant colonies function." I would use the first option as it more closely matches the sentence structure you originally chose. Besides that, gave your comment a like as it is something that the original video did not cover and is something that should be surfaced. Good thinking!

The algorithms that decide the best directions to your destination for Waze vs GoogleMaps are very different. You won’t notice it so much in small suburban and rural communities, but those differences are exacerbated when you are in a major metropolis or your destination is a major metropolis. Despite the common ownership, those algorithms have remained separate. I live in NYC and the routes each app calculates for in-city destinations can be materially different even if you make all of your driving preferences identical. Typically, but not always, GoogleMaps gives you a more consistently faster route than Waze for intra-city driving. GoogleMaps also tends to stick to major roads whereas Waze can sometimes take you on a side street adventure. Now for inter-city driving, Waze is hands down the better algorithm. GoogleMaps is lazy for routes between cities and sticks with the same route unless the traffic causes a very material difference in time to destination. Whereas Waze is more likely to anticipate traffic and will risk a more creative route that is often times better. One more thing. GoogleMaps assumes that you will be driving at the speed limit (unless there is traffic obviously) when calculating its ETA. Waze assumes you will drive 10-15% faster than the speed limit. Don’t believe me? Test it out yourself. Happy driving.

Waze rerouting Atlanta traffic has saved me more times on the way to work than I can count, even if I leave my house an hour early to get to work 30 minutes early, there's a crash or something 5 miles ahead that's slowed down traffic and it offers a re-route that gets me to work on time, and knowing that theres a crash up ahead.
@mikeflowerdew7877

I have the opposite experience. I find that waze knows when you can't really drive the speed limit on a road (because it's narrow or whatever), and it adjusts for that. I've been consistently impressed with its ETAs. Perhaps on your roads, people do just ignore the speed limit? That would fit with waze matching what people actually do, not just copying the number from a sign.

Great video explaining Waze functionalities! Although I always use Waze, the frequent innacuracies in planning the route in a city I am very familiar with has lead me to think this is very intentional on Google’s part. Either by not allowing Waze to improve or by actively sabotaging it. I would also like to add that for me the key way of avoiding any issues with the route (on Waze or any other app) is do some planning ahead of time. Look at where point B is on the map, choose for yourself what the fastest route is, check what the route you are presented with is and then judge by yourself based on actual traffic that you can see whether it makes sense to take those suggested shortcuts or not. I have been in situations where I got a better ETA by not taking those shortcuts and judging things on the spot. Of course this does not apply in unfamiliar territory, but for regular commuters that could help. Things I like: all the things you mention in the video + the UX + the fact that even when you disconnect your phone from your car, it remembers the destination and will resume it. Even if you do lose internet coverage, the app doesn’t freeze, it just keeps going with the available information it had at the beginning of your journey. Also the community is super helpful in updating the restrictions and new roads! There are 4 things I do not like about it: 1. The inaccuracies which I mentioned previously; 2. The ability to have routes downloaded offline. In places where signal is scarce, I usually download maps on google and use that because Waze cannot even plot a course if it’s not connected to the internet. As I mentioned earlier, it doesn’t drop if you get in a more remote area than when you started, but once there, good luck looking up a new destination. 3. I also don’t like the fact that when you select a certain route, Waze can decide for itself to switch to a different one, which is very infuriating especially because you might not notice. One way of mitigating that is to add a stop to force it to go where you want. 4. Although also applicable to other apps, I would still like to mention that it doesn’t know how to do a U-turn in a street if this is permitted by traffic laws and instead will take you streets away just so you can land in the exact spot where you started from if you had just turned the car around. All in all, I’m still using Waze 99% of the time. It’s just better for driving.

Most important features for me that Waze has but other maps app don’t is GPS real time speed (great to quickly check if you’re over speeding), and police/speed radars presence. When I was studying at UK, Google map is the best navi app for me. But back in my home country of Malaysia, everyone I know including myself are using Waze. I have tried to continue using google map when I first returned, but quickly I changed back to Waze. For Malaysia, Waze is just a lot more accurate. It knows Malaysian roads and tolls and highways. It is just perfect. And for a developing country like Malaysia, everyone drives. I feel like Waze is just made for driving users. While for google, it is damn accurate when it comes to public transportation and walking. Which isn’t that popular in Malaysia.

As soon as Google bought Waze, they started stealing all the best ideas for Maps. For example, the banner to help you pick the right lane at a junction. There are still so many great features that only Waze has. I'd be very disappointed if Google killed Waze without providing these features in Maps.

Controversial but honestly I kinda hope Waze merges with Google Maps. Would encourage other map apps, like Apple Maps, to adopt more waze-like features, because Waze alone is only good for directions and road notifications. Also, Apple and Google need to do more advertising for these features so people know they exist. My parents had no clue Apple had crowd-sourced reporting. Because why would they? They were never told, and most people don't stay up to date with release and patch notes for their devices and software.

I agree. If Google was smart, they would take the best parts of Waze and implement it into Google Maps. Some people say Google Maps already uses Waze's data, but that's definitely not true in most countries. Maybe in the USA. The Google Maps app is much more smoother than Waze, but there's zero customization options, limited reporting data, and well.. it's boring lol. If they including better reporting features and data from Waze, added more fun voices and characters, and some of the minor features without over-bloating the app, that'd be ideal.

Back in the day waze used to change routes based on traffic/accidents that happened and suggested changes mid drive. It was amazing! Nowadays it never happens but it's still the best navigation app. The fact that people can post pictures of what happened so you can decide to turn around or not if your stucked is crazy good. Oh, it definitely still happens... Waze tried to reroute me off the highway a few months ago to a random country road. I like the traffic avoidance a lot, also waze doesn't care about keeping you on the bigger roads like most other navigation apps. It learns my preferred roads(for example when I go to work I mostly use a route that takes 3mins longer than the fastest) and waze detects that and uses that route for future directions. Lastly it learns my average speed on different roads, my eta almost always is spot on.

As you said, I am one of the people who tends to use both Google maps and waze. Simply because I use both public transport and a personal vehicle. Waze is a great app for driving with all the traffic information and the reports of things around me, but when it comes to public transport, (when I'm navigating inside my city) I have no other options than Google maps, and even then, it lacks in features, and I have to use Moovit as well... I need to get directions in google maps, i.e what lines should I take and where should I switch, and than I check the times of the line in the moovit app, as well as pay in the moovit app. I wish this all experience was more cohesive. Google tends to not be exact with the times of busses, and moovit is not good at suggesting routes😢

Like Instagram to Meta, Waze has a purpose to most of the users in the road. It’s funny when you say Google Maps or Apple Maps was used for driving. For me at least, it’s used as dictionary for everything about the world like place to eat, public transport and planning the route, which works well when I’m a passenger rather than the driver. However, when you are on the road, you just need some essential things like how long, how fast, any road intrusion ahead and any alternatives ahead which Waze delivers very well. Also, Google Maps as directions does get too clunky for less powered phones, and Apple Maps might not be too updated in countries that don’t use Apple products all the time.

In Brazil, Waze is the best app for a few reasons: new roads get added quickly; it shows all speed traps on your route; the community is always on top of hidden speed traps; it allows you to add your plate numbers so that the app can remind you to not drive on days where your plate is banned (in São Paulo, due to the massive amount of vehicles and people, certain license plates cannot drive on certain days. It’s based on the last digit of the license plate); it allows you to add your toll pass and, of course, it has all the other alerts that help you on your way to wherever you’re going.

Shocking how so many people are on the band wagon of using a mobile device while driving. Around here, it's against the law to hold your cell phone while driving (only usable in hands-free mode with single touch, parked, or contacting emergency services). This ban includes being stopped at a light. This, and the larger easier to see, built in navigation systems in cars makes them the preferred tool. I think the last time I saw someone actually use Waze was 5 years ago and that was a technically challenged senior. Garmin is the clear leader with added tools such as using your vehicle height to navigate around low bridges (something Waze isn't even considering adding as a feature). Also crowdsourcing is a thing of the past for navigation since traffic can now be sourced through a variety of data sources like road sensors, and data collectors which identify movement of GPS devices. From a data privacy perspective, it's an extremely bad idea to be sharing your location. Period.

As somebody who is a full time rideshare driver, I use google maps over waze for several reasons. 1- I can tell google maps to avoid/allow toll roads through my android auto and it has no problem switching between them whereas turning tolls on and off in waze is much more user involved. 2- Waze has a habit of making simple directions much more complicated; for instance on city streets where going straight and making 1 turn to get somewhere may be just fine, waze will have you turn left off the main street, turn right on a side street, turn left on another side street, make another right, then another left, then right, then left back on to a main road. 3- I can see upcoming traffic conditions on google maps, I can look at my map and see if there are bad traffic spots along the route and get updates about why I'm being sent a certain route and waze doesn't do this. 4- the map is slow to respond, google knows almost immediately when I make a turn, but waze kind of always lags behind which can make following time sensitive directions(like a crowded downtown) much more difficult. 5- google gives you plenty of advance notice when you need to make a turn whereas waze lets you know basically at the last second resulting in many more missed turns, especially when combined with the previous reason.

Apple Maps has grown and now has speed trap reports as well, but no trajectory speed traps (yet?) and it lacks of course all other kinds of notifications (road conditions, weather conditions, generic road hazards, etc.) Also the gamification of Waze can't be underestimated. Because whenever I do come across a car stopped on a shoulder, I'm usually too late in switching to Waze, reporting it, etc. and I curse, since I could've gotten some additional points for the report.
