My Pixel 5a overheated all the time. But I decided to risk it and get the 6a with the $300 trade-in credit for pre-orders. I'm just missing the rear finger print reader.
@@TheMrMobile mr mobile big question . I actually believe getting an iPhone 12 from back market for $420-$500 plus is much better. The chipset is also stronger. One thing android manufacturers forget is the after market for phones is booming.
I also traded in my 5a for the new 6a. I just wanted the Tensor chip, and I've been pretty happy with the performance. It's also taking me a while to get used to the front screen fingerprint sensor, but I'm hoping eventually I get used to it.

I was deciding wether or not to trader hers in or urge her to do so. I decided to not. I actually didn't trade in my 5a for the 6a. I sold my 5a (which if gotten used). (I traded my 4a because the battery life on the 4a was shot and it made more sense to trade it in rather than buy a new battery.) it has a better battery than my 2 yr old 4a. But is it worth upgrading from the 5a? No. My wife's 5a beats my 6a in that department.
Quite frankly you shouldn't. That's just not who this phone is for. It's a budget device for people coming from lover end phones. And for those people it's a nice upgrade. For you though I'd atleast wait for the pixel 7 or 8.
This is a great device i was getting tired of some issues with my phone (fixed today) and was thinking to buy this one even when here i think is not supported, as always great video and watching it twice because the chat of the premiere distracted me a lot
Love the Pixel 6 (non-A) except the screen would never have the right brightness setting. Like the ambient sensor was inaccurate. I had to constantly adjust the brightness. If it weren’t for this one problem, I’d have kept the phone. Yes, this was after months of software updates from Google. If it weren’t for the screen it was the best smartphone.
Great video Michael! And from one watch lover to another, was that the Brew Retrograph 8-bit I just saw at 4:33? You and me need to talk watches sometime! 😄
Great review. Like how you say what it truly brings to the table with examples of the smart capabilities no other phone line has. So many reviewers miss the mark with Pixels including the million+ viewer club which I won't name. Its worth noting that its all better on the 6 standard that came before it. It's just a great all rounder and worth the little extra compared to what this brings. Cheers
sorry but those youtubers you indirectly mention recommend going for 5a which is cheaper and way better value that this one since you get almost all the AI (except removing people from pics ,so sad) and gives you better battery life to top it all off, whereas here he doesnt even mention this.
@@xeon2k8 The 5a was never available where I am and in many parts of the world. It is also not available on Google's site now it seems, nor anything prior to the 6. I also have older phones but let's keep it current, cause that's what this review is. Sorry that those youtubers mislead you... again.
@@xeon2k8 Indeed, for the last part lol. Great if you found a Pixel for you. My younger son uses my 5 year old Pixel 2 and he loves it! Any Pixel is a good Pixel bottom line. Cheers
Every time I watch one of your smartphone videos, my first question is where does he get such wonderful wallpapers? I can't tell you Michael how many times I've watched any of your reviews in the last year and a half or so where I am wanting one of the wallpapers from each review. Now I'm sure some of these may or may not just be on the pixel themselves and I haven't looked at my own pixel 6 Pro but just curious where do you get most of them or where do you get the ones you normally show off on the phones in your reviews?
@@unn4medfeel1ng thanks so much! I think I knew that... But I guess I just forgot. Wow. I had enough Google Play points to get it for a quarter on Pro instead of the $2.99 normal price. Woot
I received my pixel 6a yesterday. I like it so far. The screen refresh debate did concern me because I was coming from ROG phone 2. But I like the clean software and dependable camera. Thank you so much for a good review.
The refresh rate debate is honestly hilarious. Yes, it's a letdown, but it isn't a deal breaker. Heck, I don't see ppl making a fuss over iPhone 13 and iPhone SE lack of high refresh rate. These phones sell like a hot cake.
Mr. Mobile how is the reception? If you didn't know, the Google Tensor chip used in the Pixel 6 Pro, 6, and 6a has the 5123b modem made by Samsung. This is a problem because reports and reviews of the 6 Pro and 6 say that reception is bad with loss of signal, dropped signals, and trouble with finding networks. As this is a phone... this should be a very important topic that everyone should talking about, but almost no one is...
For sure. What happened to reviewers caring about the #1 most important thing in a phone?!? I have a pixel 6 and it's driving me nuts- maybe it's not _always_ my side (it's hard to know every time), but the percentage of times people struggle to hear me or I can't hear them during calls has rocketed up since my pixel 5
As my Pixel 3a overheated more than once today while recording videos I contemplated trading up to the 6a but really want to see how they do longer term (between now and the end of the year) and then may upgrade.
With the same modem+soc combo as the standard Pixel 6 you will certainly be prone to heating up depending on signal strength and whether or not you're outside. YMMV
To be fair my Pixel 3 overheats playing videos by the pool in a water proof bag in only 80F and in the shade. Also it over heats in the sun with the ophoto mode open.
Freaking love your opening statement, as someone who also sells phones, the US market is DRY. When you consider that and the fact that the a53 is just an overall slower device than the 6a, it begins to make a lot more sense
The fingerprint scanner on my Pixel 6 Pro seems to be working quite well and is reasonably quick. Sure, there are times I wish it was an ultrasonic scanner in the screen or a capacitive scanner on the back like the old Pixels but it's very serviceable so I'm sure they can patch it up on all models some more. I would like to see them implement facial recognition on the Pixel lineup but that requires better front facing cameras. It would have been nice if they gave the 6a a 90Hz panel and kept the mid-range stuff for the price of an iPhone SE 2022.
I love the Pixel but I gotta say, the specs could've been higher for the price or the phone could've been cheaper overall. But it's not the best to judge a Pixel on specs as it goes so much further than that. I have a suggestion Mr.Mobile, how about a review on the newer Moto phones in this or lower price range? People pretty much think Moto is dead but they've actually been putting out pretty good phones and I think they deserve more news, like the edge 30 and the g82/52/32. Do you like the idea?

I've been using the UK version of the 6a for 3 days, well I think the battery is amazing, I'm a heavy user, constantly on RU-vid and trading apps and I haven't been able to kill it, the lowest I got was 20% - unplugged at 7am and plugged it back in at 1am, so 18h heavy use. That has been my experience at least.
Thanks. I’m waiting on mine arriving. (UK too) Always take tech reviews with a picnh of salt regarding battery life. Majority of the world aren’t glued to their phone 24/7 like they are
I've had mine now for a week. The battery is great. It's one of the best phones I've owned. I purchased it for its size, I had enough of carrying large phones. No overheating issues, excellent build quality.
Hahaha..... I also don't care much about the refresh rate on my phone..... It support 90hz but I kept it at 60hz all day long.... And yes I played many fast pace games on my phone like codm, PUBG new state, apex legends, mobile legends, etc.... But I don't see much of a difference between 90hz & 60hz refresh rate.... Also no it's not because of battery drain.... My phone has a 7000mAh battery..... I feel 60hz is smooth enough for me.
agreed. if it's on a 1000 dollar phone like a samsung s23u or iphone 14 pro, i can see the issue. but im sure 80-90% of people who shop in this range do not care.
60hz is not bad but when you have tested and used 120hz, you can't go back. You can find 120hz on most midrange smartphone so we don't understand Google is not giving you option to chose. 60hz is a no go for me but my mother who use a Samsung A32 don't know about 120hz and she sure will not care. Tech enthousiast care. Plus living in Europe, i have easily access to chinese smartphones
I don't use 120Hz on my phone as well, and I saw the difference. That being the battery being more horrendous. Didn't notice 120Hz was there, and didn't care about it. As long as my phone's reliable, I'm happy
@@nishikun867 It's crazy that only a few years ago that 60fps was considered the holy grail for PC gamers. And now we have phone users complaining about *only* getting 60fps.
You are right. That refresh rate thing is subjective to many people. If people want to, they can buy a 60 hz phone. Reviewers should not call that a deal breaker. Although, that phone is priced a bit too high in India :/
The refresh rate thing is stupid also, a lot of the time the "jankiness" people claim to see is software based. Like the "jelly wobble" when scrolling up and down quickly on an older version of the Oxygen OS Its one of those things that people think is important, but really isn't. 60hz screens on a mobile device are more than sufficient.
@@tehwabbbit Yeah. The smoothness is barely noticeable cos most of the time you don't scroll or navigate the phone like the world is gonna end tomorrow. Maybe it's more noticeable in entry level phone but i have a mid range and a flagship and unless i keep swiping really fast, i wouldn't notice the difference. Maybe when it comes to certain games it's important.
Just got the 6a 2 weeks ago for $299 (new). Had an unlocked LG V40 and loved that phone but hated being stuck on Android 9. Loving the phone so far and actually like the size better.
Eagerly waited for this video. I was waiting to buy the device but the initial reviews were not that great. You answered all the questions a phone buyer would have about a device with these kind of reviews at pre-launch. Thanks for helping me make an informed decision.
In my country, I have found the pixel 6 at €450, and I'm still contemplating which phone to buy.. Either go with the definitely better pixel 6 or get the smaller pixel 6a (I'm personally way tired of large phones and the 6.1 inch screen is a huge plus for me) along with the buds a series that Google gives for free
A good back up phone for my primary iPhone 11 Pro. There are some apps that just work better on Android and I'm looking for an update on my Note 8 but don't want to pay a fortune. I buy all my phones outright for timely OS updates. Can't wait for or trust service providers on that one.
Not having a headphone Jack isn’t an “audiophile complaint”. You can get a better set of wired headphones at $20 than wireless ones at $40. And not just better at sound output, but there’s no comparison between their respective microphones: wired mics outperform 90% of the true wireless earbuds out there. It really does diminish the value proposition by a little bit.
You can buy a dongle and use wired. I prefer wireless just because because "tied" to your phone is annoying. I can listen to podcasts while limiting "screentime" or chasing my 3 year old around lol
Not to mention that I don't have to charge my $10 wired earbuds while I can't do a very long binge watch during a road trip or long flight with my Galaxy Buds Live which only last approximately 5-6 hours.
@@lenacheney Nobody likes dongles. Smartphones were perfectly fine with having BOTH a charging port AND a 3.5mm jack simultaneously. No dongle required. 😂😂😂

I will be getting the Pixel 6a, to replace my wife's 3a for Christmas this year. I'm still rocking the Pixel 4a 5g. It's all about the software. I absolutely love the creature comforts of these Pixel devices.
My biggest regret was switching from a Pixel 3 to a S10e. I never realized how common spam calls and texts are nowadays until I left the Pixel family. Camera and software are such a downgrade too.
In Romania we have the pixel 6 series at some retailers and people complain about the missing 5g volte and wifi calling. In other countries is the same situation?
Excellent review, as always. Far too many reviewers spent way too much time highlighting the shortcomings of the phone. Whereas, you gave such a balanced review. Mine arrived yesterday and I absolutely love it. It's been a very great experience so far. No overheating or connection issues. The fingerprint reader works just fine. I'm loving it!
That's the most balanced review I have seen so far, even though I have decided to wait for the Pixel 7 anyway. It also comes down to what you are currently using, as to what features you cannot compromise on. For me on my Pixel 5, it is too much of a downgrade to a 6a for the features I enjoy, e.g., I cannot lose wireless charging plus I like the small form factor. And I already enjoy all the smart Google AI stuff on my current Pixel 5 like call screening. So lets see whether Pixel 7 can convince me it is a worthy upgrade.
I'm leaning 6a, as the 7 leaks don't excite me. My 3 just got it's last security patch, and only because it was a critical issue. At least the 6a is cheap and will tide me over with software for a couple more years.
The 6a is essentially a downgraded 5. Worse battery, no headphone jack, no wireless charging, same camera. I'd go 6 or 6pro as you can likely find a good deal out there and you get the new camera hardware. The value proposition for the 6a just isn't there.
@@Cracky003 the 6a isn't really much of any upgrade from the 3. I went from 3 to 6pro and if it weren't for the telephoto lens, I would have been severely disappointed. My wife still has her 3 and image quality is only marginally better on the pro and the front camera is MUCH better on the 3 due to autofocus.
@@derekisthematrix for me it's about continuing to get software updates. As long as night sight still works, then the camera is good enough for my job, and that's about all I care about on the camera end. I want my phone to still be smallish, and get security updates and run android. There just isn't much for me. The 6a is just cheap and will hold me over until some one turns out what I want. The Zenfone 9 is close, but idk if asus does any updates to their phones.
We're talking mobile devices here and since they rely on that sweet sweet battery juice, it means you can use your device for a longer period of time using the 60Hz screen refresh rate instead of 90Hz and above. I'm definitely willing to sacrifice the smoothness over longevity on a single charge. Actually, This is exactly what I do, because my phone supports 120Hz, but locking the refresh rate to 60Hz has made much more sense.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M Well why don't you leave it up to the person who bought to device? Saying it doesn't make sense is senseless, maybe he has a device that has all the other features he wants/needs, but he doesn't want the 120Hz or 5G, as he mentioned they drain so much battery it's more useful for him to get more battery life.
Just bought one. It arrived yesterday and I spent sometime getting it set up etc. It updated to 13 today and so far, I've been mightily impressed both with the setup/transfer process and with the stock Android setup, though I am still clinging to Nova Launcher and Swiftkey Keyboard. But, I've wanted a Pixel for ages and am happy to move to a smaller phone. For me, it's all about convenience, regular updates (never had that before on Android) and affordability!
I joined the Pixel family through the Pixel 3a and have loved it since. A lot of great features for a great price. This time around I upgraded from the 4a to the 6a and have been playing with it the past day or so. While I'm pleased with it overall, my gripe with it is the in-screen fingerprint scanner. The one on the 4a was so fast and accurate, it didn't feel like a scan, it felt like a button. Now I have to press and hold, and while waiting a second is not a long time, it feels like it's a long time compared to instantaneous. In my opinion, this is one of the only - yet biggest - drawbacks from upgrading from the 4a. Hopefully they can improve the performance with software updates, but I'm doubtful.
Agreed, my first Pixel was the 4a, and it was perfection. I got the 6a because it was so inexpensive on sale, has a faster chip, wide camera, IP rating, and extra years of updates. I decided ahead that I'll likely trade it for the 7a so I don't mind missing the smaller size (really adored that though) and superior fingerprint reader. I do think I'll get used to the size and will probably like it more, the more I use it. If not, I only have a year to wait lol.
I also never understood the refresh rate thing. Yes, side by side with a higher refresh rate screen it becomes noticeable but in day to day use you don't notice it.
It is extremely noticeable if you have recently used a high refresh rate display on any other device (tablet, computer monitor, etc). Whether or not it's a dealbreaker depends on if you have those other devices and if that bothers you.
I have one as my main monitor on my PC and I can notice it just by moving a window around but I obviously got it for gaming. I don't really care if my Twitter feed scrolls at 60 or 120Hz as long as it's smooth. 60Hz also saves battery (though to be fair, the 6 Pro has a screen that potentially saves more by being able to lower the refresh rate way down when it's not needed
Agreed @Earthling, I have a 90hz tablet and 60hz phone. When going between the two it isn't noticeable at all. Higher refresh rate is just another gimmick for manufactures to up sell you on.
It's like 1080P, 2K and 4K display on a phone, 60Hz is minimum, anything above that is extra. Also for me, I prefer a long lasting battery than high refresh rate screen.
Man, i wish Pixels were sold locally here in Philippines. I, for one, love the stock android experience coming from a Pixel Experience ROM from a Redmi Note 8 owner. 60hz? No problem since my second phone (for gaming), LG V50, still works fantastic day to day use.
Y'know, honestly the main thing holding me back from trying a pixel is their odd decision to put the power button above the volume rocker. But since I'm watching this on my old BlackBerry Priv 😊 I might not even remotely be their target market 😇
Yesss, BlackBerry gang! I have a Passport, which is still going not too badly considering how old it is, but I was contemplating getting a 6A. Ultimately though I've decided to go for a Nothing Phone 1 as I heard Pixels are pretty buggy. Plus the Phone 1 has more higher end features and a pretty unique design as well - I don't wanna be going from having a BB to any random modern smartphone lol, as I'm sure you can relate. I wish the 5g BB didn't go pear-shaped, cos I wouldn't have been considering other phones if I could get that.
Ironically I did get the 6a and wow what a beast of a phone. I'm enjoying it even more than a Note10+ and yes a few bugs have been around (but they're always there, even on iphones) but this phone is outstanding! 😯👏
Yeah note10 was legit, I did enjoy it a lot but tbh now that I have a pixel 6a I can be completely honest and take back my criticism of the button placement. Not only is the power button basically at the level of how high up it was on blackberry android phones, but also the mental switch took no time at all. I think I've literally mistook the volume for the bower button one single time in these past few months of owning it
You don't interact with a tv screen like you do a phone screen. Think about how the touch sampling is linked to the "feel" of the phone and the hertz in how you perceive that feel visually. You simply don't manipulate the elements the same way on a bigger screen.
@@attomicchicken I've never said these devices are the same. However they share characteristics, the screen and it's refresh rate, that make them suitable to use. Anyway, this is the internet so we can argue all day long

I am definitely "in the camp" of those who make no fuss about screen refresh. My current phone, Zenfone 8 has a screen refresh of up to 120Hz, with options of "auto", 60, 90, and 120 fixed. But what I am currently using is 60Hz fixed, less strain on the battery, and while I was using 120, 90, and "auto", I noticed that some of my regularly used Apps shuddered, which didn't happen on 60Hz. So that was a no-brainer, so to speak.
I have an s20 plus with the exynos chipset and I too favor 60hz, for the reasons you mentioned but above all, the screen's colors seemingly took a hit whenever I would swap to 120hz. 60hz, great colors and qhd+ seems to outweigh 120hz imo
Since the trade in deal on older Pixels was so good I traded my 4a for a 6a. I also have a TCL phone and when I can't screen a call is when I really miss a Pixel. So far my 6a is beautiful and a great value and it's going through battery quickly but it is only day one.
@@geneousslayer214 Yes, It's pretty much the same as my 4a.so mostly a day phone, sometimes I charge for 10 or 20 minutes if it's below 50% in the afternoon.

I’ve got 3 pixel 6as because of the amazing trade in deal of 300$ for a previous a series device google was running. Got rid of a 3a and 4a and pixel 5. The 6a is the 6 google should have made size wise/weight wise. The 6 was a stupid brick I had to send back immediately. The battery life has been excellent so far on my units. Turn off 5g!!! I think the only time I’ve really been that bothered about refresh rates is on my iPad. After using iPad Pros for the last few years now I definitely don’t enjoy using a tablet with 60hz 😂 on phones though I really couldn’t care less, would rather use less battery to be honest.
Yeah, after using an iPad Pro and then swapping it with my partners Air so they can have a better drawing experience I immediately noticed the difference, but going between my iPad Pro and iPhone 13 mini it never really felt that different. If I’m going big I’ll want to do a higher refresh rate now, but honestly in a small handheld device like a phone I just don’t really care ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are a couple of trade offs that puzzle me, but I really do not understand why it is getting dragged. Like my parents who still have pixel 2s would love this phone
Even after this review, I went with the S21 and I don't regret it. The camera is great, wireless charging is a must, and Samsung Pay and account is already what I use.
Michael, wouldn't it be interesting to compare the way different companies treat their "affordable" or "value" version of their flagships? like Google and their A suffixes, Apple and their SE suffixes, and Samsung with their FE suffixes. not to be confused with the top mid range offerings such as Samsung's A series.
6a would have been great deal if it was launched with tempting price like what 4a did two years ago, not to mention you can now get the pixel 6 at same or near same price at most places in us
This also might be a bit of a stretch but there seems to be a watch icon from the Galaxy wearables app on the always on display, that usually shows up when your watch has been disconnected or needs an update, he probably also has the watch 5 series.
@@TheMrMobile also thought so because you said 'using another phone' instead of like 'using my z flip' or something, I guess we can make ourselves see things we want😳.
@@TheMrMobile I will also say that I really love the review, the lack of high refresh and the battery are real downers. If they threw those in it would be an instant recommend for almost everyone!
I think it's still definitely one of the best phones at that price point, and is definitely the midrange phone that I would buy, but I don't think this phone has the same value for money that the early "a" series phones did. I actually think the standard Pixel 6 is the best value for money of the Pixel 6 lineup.
Not really convinced the software aspects makeup for the hardware shortfalls, which are glaring. Things that should be stock standard shouldn’t counter what’s missing when compared to other phones at the same price point.
Hardware shortfalls? Do you mean the refresh rate ? Wireless charging or what? And what other phones would you compare it to? The phone is nicely balanced for the price. It offers much faster processor and much better and reliable camera then any other of its competitors in its price range and that's a fact. And the software experience is arguably also better then on any other phone in its category. Overall it's great phone not only great in one single aspect.
@@leviathan066 Why does the faster processor matter? When would you notice it in this day and age versus a 778g, especially without a high refresh rate display?
@@aloi In case of A53 5G or Nothing phone 1, which are the main rivals for this phone in US, you absolutely notice it. Both phones stutter while opening apps or just scrolling through UI. And I'm not even talking about longevity. Pixel 6a is just a nice, well balanced phone with a great display, all being 60hz but that's way less important for daily use then fast and reliable interface and much better camera.
The modem issue is the same from the P6 and is because of the tensor chip. Basically being an exynos chip which are notorious for bad reception issues and battery life. Pretty much the reason why I sold my p6 for an s22 ultra. Speaking of refresh rate. I am one of those people too who could really care less about how fast my screen goes. So I keep my S22 ultra at 60hz because I want better battery life
this is not accurate. the exynos chip is not the google tensor. they are completely different. the reception issues comes from the 5123b modem (made by samsung) that is used in the google tensor chip. every other phone uses the X60 modem from Qualcomm.

Google pixel 6a is imported in India so it has been taxed by government. Even without tax it’s still not giving value for money. A52s 5g would be great.
why just go for A52s you can also get S20FE if you really want to save money without compromising the performance and camera to some extent. I have S20FE it's a power packed phone for the price especially in India it's one of the best at that price not for everyone due to software support. But considering these days having software support is more hassle than not I think will be plenty OK with A13 in my S20FE for a long time.
The 6a was a no brainer for me. Google gave me $300 trade in credit for my 4a and got the buds a free. Brand new 6a and and buds a for $150? Yes please!!!
I don't care about a high refresh rate screen because I always would end up changing it back to 60hz to save battery. My only worry is that some reviewers say that this display stutters more than other 60hz panels. It makes me think twice about jumping on the $300 trade in I can get with my Pixel 5a.
The fact that reviewers based on US are actually recommending this product with all its practical issues goes to show how uncompetitive the smartphone market is in U.S.A.
Yep. Living in France, midrange market is Samsung A series then chinese brand like Xiaomi and Oppo. Poco phone are not sell in store like Fnac, Darty, Boulanger. You can only buy them online.

@@xmlthegreat There's a lot more to a phone than hardware specs. Motorola puts out great specs for the price, but gets the rest VERY wrong lately. It seems mostly due to their coziness with the US carriers, who want to sell a new phone to you every year.
The Pixel 6A is in flagship territory with the Tensor. Heck, it outperforms the 8+Gen1 in difficult tasks like 4K60FPS video rendering - not just by a bit but like 22% faster (source: video by Juan Bagnell - maybe unlisted though).
