sdspgn I got myself a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.2 for 350. 2k Amoled screen is gorgeous and I only pay 15 bucks a month at T-Mobile. This Pixel C looks awesome but it's a first gen, I'll wait for the next or when it's cheaper

Zemtex . not if it only has 16 gig of internal memory which for my usage is not enough room. 32 gig is my minimum.

This is by far the best tablet I have ever owned, period. After going through the iPad Pro debacle in which it's experience was so crippled by it's OS, this was more than a breathe of fresh air, it was actually what I wanted. The shortcomings of this tablet are all easily fixed by just spending a little time on XDA. I was able to enable the dual app view by simply changing a single variable and unlike the iPad Pro in which only about 120 apps or so support this feature as of yet, the moment I enabled it, every app installed was able to use it. Here is the huge kicker that's no one is talking about here though, this thing is completely opened, which means your free to install other OS's. I have successfully installed Arch Linux and even better, there are native GPU drivers. Which means, CUDA, yep CUDA, since the Pixel C uses a Nvidia X with a 256 CUDA core GPU, this thing flies and is able to do things that no other tablet can. Continued........

Example, I can run my GPU enabled media encoder, which encodes video files faster than a entry level Mac Pro encoding the same video using it's CPU, no, I'm not fibbing either, I've tested it extensively. The GPU is so good on this thing that I actually prefer using it over my laptop which only has an embedded. Blender flies on it and when I attach it to my custom built render farm which is built using 5 Nvidia K1 Jetson boards, it renders my projects 5x faster than a Mac Pro using 2 D700, which is actually not a large feat as the Mac Pro doesn't support dual GPU's running in succession for rendering jobs, no CrossFire, yeah, I know. Anyway, this has turned out to be one hell of a computer for me and should as well to anyone who is tired of compromising when it comes to their devices. Something that Apple by the way seems to be really into these days, everything that I've bought from them in the last few years has been nothing but one compromise after another.

At last a review that actually understands what this device is about! Since the 6.0.1 update i have to reboot mine in various ways to get rid of lag but this device gives me the freedom i don't get on iPad but with a premium build! I love it and love Pocketnow! Tomorrow will be a flashing day I think!

This review style is great. It really goes through all the things a consumer would ask. It's the small things that you really don't notice when you first test something at a store. Things like wobble when touching the screen or clunky multitasking options. Nice work.

Smartphone geek The power is a little questionable though. The Pixel C actually has a PC grade GPU which supports many APIs used on Windows. The A9X I have no idea what it's capable of, but since Mac is moving to using metal, and is starting to share other APIs with iOS, it probably would be a power house(in terms of tablets) running OSX

+Karthik Naik Not exactly a ferrari. It's like a old massive 70s low compression American 5.6 Litre V8 producing just 123hp and 180nM of torque compared to a high compression 2 litre 4 cylinder at the time producing more.

Michael, why compare the Pixel C to the Surface Pro and then mention cost? They're not the same kind of device. It would be much more fair to compare it to the Surface 3, which comes in at the same price and is even a bit cheaper when you add in the cheaper keyboard accessory.

When considering competitors, why do you never mention the Surface 3? Not the Pro, but the regular Surface. It's about the same size, it's cheaper than the Pro and is just a more logical option.

+Lasse Friden It also offers a pretty terrible UX, if our review unit is any indication. Until we determine whether it's a faulty unit or the standard Surface 3 experience, though, we're refraining from officially commenting on the device. ^M

Google never mention "Surface" or "MacBook" talking about Pixel C. The general press do it. The Pixel C Tablet is: (a) the first tablet built by Google itself (so, can't be a Nexus: this brand is about partnership) (b) a tablet with a Pixel construction and Q/A (c) a convertible Android tablet. This is nothing new: Asus have built this for years. And thats it, I think. Doesn't seems that the Google idea is compare it with anything.

though you had said this tablet has more smartphone like behaviors with apps, would you recommend this as a secondary tool for basic computing (email, web browsing, office suite) for an on-the-go option? I love Android and love the Tab S2, but I'm looking into other options of tablets to replace my bulky laptop for when I travel for work...thoughts?

Actually surface pro 4 type cover is only 129 usd, unless you want the one with fingerprint sensor. but since the one with google pixel does not have a fingerprint sensor, it should only be used to compare with the regular SP4 type cover.

Is there a Smart Cover coming out anytime soon? I know, stupid question... but perhaps the more people ask this question, the more probable (probably not ...) manufacturers will make one. I mean this iPad pendant, attached with magnets to one side and only covering the glass, serving as a stand, too. So no CASE (that covers the back, too) but only a slim cover for the glass with magnetic connectors at the edge.

The problem with the pixel C is that doesn't hit on either note. It doesn't measure up to the iPad pro for entertainment and gaming, and it doesn't measure up to the surface for productivity and full scale OS, and it's not cheap enough to overcome either deficiency.

6:31 also. Credit to that OG Pebble Time Steel. One of the best early smart watches to come out. And arguably still one of the best considering what it can do and how it still kills the modern competition 6 years later with its two week battery life 😳 Nothing has come close The last thing that long and being able to order your Uber from your wrist.

How did a 3GB android device run out of memory? Could somebody explain that? I have never seen an app close on a 2GB android device even though I'm sometimes heavily multitasking.(or at least trying to multitask because android makes it almost impossible)

Why would not being able to see the keys stop you from being able to type. Yes it's annoying not having a back light. However I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker. Just learn to touch type it is a really useful skill, and to learn the basics is really easy it's just about practice

One small factual correction: You said the Pixel's keyboard is cheaper than either the one for the iPad Pro or Surface Pro 4. It is definitely cheaper than Apple's but as for the Surface, it's only cheaper than the most expensive Surface keyboard (i.e., the one with the fingerprint scanner). Since the Pixel C also does not have a fingerprint scanner, it makes more sense to compare it with the Surface keyboard without it...and at $130, it's cheaper than Google's keyboard.

payton gossett Android N makes a huge difference with split screen. I'm running 7.1.1 beta on it and it's great.

Samsung did this first (Android wise) and led the way in terms of maximising the big screens by using split screen multitasking features. Microsoft also has done it too and finally Apple is adopting split screen multitasking into iOS and Mac OS. Stock Android still has a long way to go (without rooting) in terms of maximising the full power of bigger mobile screens. End of paragraph. Lol!👻👻👻

+Pocketnow Why is it that they decided against a back lit keyboard? The price is high enough that for minimal cost they could have included that. The battery life is definitely promising. I don't think that for the price it should have those issues with app optimization. I'm sure this came up as they were developing the product. Why would they release it knowing beforehand that the experience would not be at its best? It is definitely puzzling. I know you said that you thought that it was perhaps designed as a chrome book and then they decided to load android on it. My question is why? Doesn't that dilute the android brand. I would think that someone surely could have mentioned these concerns.

Peter Hindes nah its not my only device I have a PC that I mainly use for everything. The thing that putting me off Surface 3 is that it looks Kinda cheap looking and the battery life is poor compared to the pixel c and I'm not too bothered about the Os if I can still use word and the Internet still.

Against the iPad pro the C is a good contender. It's the only tablet with Tegra X1, the design is beautiful, good screen but it suffers from the biggest problem the iPad pro has: like iOS there aren't any Android apps designed with the powerful hardware in mind, so besides a faster and smoother experience you don't get any apps to put the hardware to the test.

Got it for Christmas and I LOVE it!!! If you want a notebook or laptop, or Apple or Windows, of course this is going to miss the mark for you. Duh. But, if you want an Android tablet, this is the BEST :-D

No program will ever shut down if it runs out of memory. At that point the Hard drive start to cache in the memory onto itself to free up memory. Spotify stopped because of an internal code error or entering a faulty memory segment having leakage.

Lehel Hanko yeah but you also said " No program will ever shut down if it runs out of memory" which is contradictory because a memory leak forces the program to shut because of no memory

Karthik Naik nah man. Memory leak as I have experienced it means that a program addresses a memory segment which is out of it's rich, at which it does not have access permission. This causes chaotic behavior or program crash. It may still have all of it's allocated memory if it addresses it at the beginning of the code.

VisioningHail Good point. That is why I use a Samsung tablet. The Galaxy Tab S2 has the Microsoft Office Suite. I have all the productivity apps I need. I would only use a laptop for programming, gaming and heavier PC work. By the way, I use a keyboard connected via the OTG cable. Bluetooth keyboards use too much power and are sometimes ineffective. 😒

Why there is no review where reviewer is pairing any bluetooth mouse and use this tablet with it as well as keyboard. Maybe then you wont have to interact with touchscreen as much and lack of certain system buttons wouldnt be so annoying.

I'd like to see something similar, but with a 12" screen, a keyboard with all the programming keys and maybe a Core M for x86 virtual machines. I know that would drive the cost up, but something like this could replace my 6 year old MacBook if done right.

I prefer the way the keyboard attaches to the Pixel C; you can pick the tablet up without the keyboard flopping about. I also prefer Android to Windows for various reasons, including the better touchscreen user interface. Then again, I'm thinking of more changes they'd need to make before I'd consider buying one and to be honest, you're both probably right - I'll probably end up getting a 2-in-1.

Karthik Naik I'm sure it has an excellent touchscreen, but I'm talking about the design of the software. Android was designed to be used on touchscreens from the beginning, while with Windows, they've basically _adapted_ a keyboard and mouse interface for basic touchscreen use.
