Learn more about the Google Pixel C in our full review at Pocketnow: /2015/12/18/google-pixel-c-review (full description below)
The Google Pixel C is a funny little device. Running stock Android Marshmallow, but with a Chromebook’s branding and design, with an expensive accessory a must-buy if you want to get the most of it, it won’t be on everyone’s shopping list this holiday season. And that's before you consider all the rough reviews it's gotten from other publications already.
Given that less-than-stellar debut, you might expect our first impression of the Google Pixel C to be equally underwhelming. But 24 hours in, we’re actually quite captivated by this little contradiction of a machine. With its comfortable keys, beautiful display and stunning industrial design, it's a tablet right out of the future, masquerading as a high-end notebook - and not doing a bad job of it, at least from a hardware perspective. With nice little touches like a knock-to-activate battery meter and the absolute absence of any branding whatsoever on its sleek aluminum casing, the Pixel C is a beauty to behold.
Of course, it's still an Android tablet in 2015, so things are about to get a lot more critical once we get out of the honeymoon phase. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts. Join us for our first-impressions look at the Google Pixel C, and stay tuned for Pocketnow's full review coming soon!
Star Trek App shown in closing shot is "12 LCARS," available on the Play Store: play.google.com/store/apps/de...

Thanks for the review, Michael. You always give the best reviews! I'm a Google Guy, and I'm seriously considering picking up a Pixel C. Yet, I'm not in any hurry to get one for the holidays. It seems smarter to wait a little while. I do wish it had proper multi-tasking. Also, (and I may be in the minority here) but I would very much like an active digitizer stylus too. Maybe a "Pixel Pencil" to match the iPad Pro and the Surface line.

The Pixel C is a tablet foremost with the option to have a keyboard if you HAVE to do some productivity work on it. Think of the Pixel C as a hatchback car. It's pretty versatile and carry a lot of stuff, but don't be surprised if you can't fit that full-size dining room table in it. If you need something that can carry it, then get a van or truck (ie. Laptop or Surface Pro)

+BIG1TOWER the thing is I want a tablet to run mobile apps (for which Microsoft Store is seriously lacking). For example I like to read comics on my tablet, if I had a surface there would be no apps for that and I would have to read them through a browser. If I want a productivity machine I would buy a surface, but let's face it this is just another Android tablet and really shouldn't be compared to a full Windows machine.
@Simon-eo3dx

With an optimized, more linux-like build (android N ?) with multi windows and a task bar, this could be an amazing product. I believe some roms can do that right now too. Still would buy a windows laptop tho. Anyway, this looks miles better than the iPad Pro, if the software comes. An OSX iPad Pro would be a great competitor to this, but it'd be twice as expensive anyway.

I am indeed watching this on my Pixel C...and I looooove it. I just got the tablet, no keyboard, and I'm just enjoying it for what it is (a beautiful android tablet), not any of the productivity BS they are marketing as. I don't like the pixel c. it's an android tablet meant to be used for work? Come on, how lazy can you get. I hate how their advertising tablets meant to replace your laptops. news flash, there basically laptops running mobile os. just get a laptop, their practically the same price anyways.

@tree_fingers
@tree_fingers 8 лет назад
+natanealtheking1234 just cause they market it that way doesn't mean it has to be used that way. But ya fair, Google is being really dumb marketing the WEAKEST aspect of their tablet as it's main selling point (productivity). Just market is as a pimp ass Android tablet.
@IcaroMorse
@IcaroMorse 8 лет назад
Justin Reid Yeah, but as consumption device, not a productivity one. The iPad Pro is good for people that need a pencil (mostly artists or people that do a lot of handwriting - can't see it being better than a paper notebook though). And the Nexus 9 already had a keyboard but because the Pixel C has a cooler one, people are hyping it so much.

@mkygod
@mkygod 8 лет назад
I think the Pixel C gets mediocre reviews because a lot of them review it as a potential laptop replacement or productivity device, much in the way they view the Surface Book. This wasn't really a problem that the Nexus 9 had to face when it came out pre-SurfacePro3. Even though it did have a keyboard accessory available, everyone knew it was a tablet and they reviewed it as such, resulting in more positive reviews despite build quality issues. I view the Pixel C as a much needed sequel and hardware upgrade to the Nexus 9.
@YananoBere
@YananoBere 8 лет назад
mkygod This is very true. Apple made the same mistake with iPad Pro. Had they just called it what it is (an iPad +) it would have been positively received because it's actually an excellent device. Trying to pit it against a touch screen ultrabook (The Surface) by throwing "pro" in the name when it runs a very limited mobile OS was short sighted.
@tree_fingers
@tree_fingers 8 лет назад
+mkygod totally agree. It' s just a sweet ass Android tablet, nothing more. And it's even priced around the same as a Samsung Galaxy S2 or Ipad Air 2 (not counting the keyboard), so I don't know why all the traditional tech review sites are comparing it to the ipad pro and surface. Its not like it's the first Android tablet that has a keyboard accessory available. (to be fair they are focusing ALL of their marketing on the keyboard, so it's a lot Googles fault as well)
@mkygod
@mkygod 8 лет назад
+the_TS I think its the unexpected backlash for making such a cool keyboard. It gets all the attention and now everything thinks its essential, thus making the Pixel C a productivity device. Everyone forgets that the Nexus 9 also had an official fully magnetic bluetooth keyboard, but it wasn't nearly as tricked out or heavily marketed as this one. I actually think the Pixel C would have gotten better reviews if the keyboard was more plain.

@Joepantioni123321
@Joepantioni123321 8 лет назад
I'm confused over all of the dislike for this product. The lack of split screen functionality is a big let down, but I can't pretend to understand many other criticisms. In the UK atleast, this tablet is going for the same price as the iPad Air 2's 16gb option. It's not going for Surface price, or iPad Pro price. Forget about productivity for now, what is so bad about the tablet? It has a fantastic design, the latest version of clean Android - supported by Google, a wonderful screen, a pretty amazing processor... I would understand the criticisms of the lack of productivity if this tablet were priced a hundred pounds/ two hundred pounds more - but it offers just as much, if not more than other manufacturers - at the same pricepoint.

Exactly! I've got frustrated with iPad and even 6+ as everything has to be done through iTunes! Kodi...downloads straight to the device...great screen and decent speakers....perfect for me!

I don't want a laptop, i have a great desktop, but i was looking for a tablet, which i could use as laptop if i needed. Surface is to big, ipad's keyboards are a bit meh, same with samsung s2. I might as well get a Surface 3 or even a Surface pro 3 and be able to do so much more. Pixel C. No full usb, no expandable store, mixed with low storage to begin with, with heavy price tag. I really have no clue what Google was thinking of. Love the idea of a Google made tablet. But so many glaring omissions that should be present.

At first I thought this was like the surface line. Microsoft made the surfaces to showcase their software and to push third-parties to do better things with hardware, but they also made it expensive, so that other windows device companies wouldn't go out of buisness. I thought at first this was the case with the Pixel C (as it kinda was the case with the original pixel) but Google doesn't have excellent software to showcase here. Marshmallow is EXCELLENT on phones, but with no split screen, its not a tablet operating system. I'm not a tablet guy in general, but not sure who this is for, Nexus 9 is really cheap now.

Both the iPad Pro and Pixel C are quickly-thrown devices made to somehow compete with MS Surface. The big problem, in both cases, is software. And, sure, the iPad Pro isn't suited for productivity but is at least enjoyable and very usable for mild tasks. I don't know what the hell were Google smoking when they thought it would be ok to release this without side-by-side multitasking capabilities. It's a decent tablet hampered by a toy OS.

They'll be making an updated Nexus 7 but just like the Nexus 5X to the 5 it might not exactly be 7"... maybe 7.2 or 7.6 or something like that but that's not a complain though! @CaptainBlitz
@CaptainBlitz 8 лет назад
Matheus Siade Ferreira Well I don't think they'll launch another Pixel C. This tablet was already a Chrome OS project but was changed to Android last minute... and I feel this rushed last minute change kind of left the Pixel C confused as to what it wants to be. It has great hardware as Chromebook Pixels are usually but choosing Android M meant it's not so great software-wise which is common for Android tablets. I don't mind more productivity features in Android N. In fact I hope they do that without going Android Honeycomb route... but it would also be nice if they could give us IDENTICAL hardware in two sizes. Not like with the 5X to the 6P. Just... two sizes. I like smaller tablets... somewhere between 7 to 8.5" is good enough for me so I hope they do that. a Nexus 8 would be just fine.

Nexus 9 launch price 32GB $479 Nov '14, available $287 by July '15. The N9 32GB LTE $599 went to $340 by July. This Pixel C is a good spec, but if you don't like the price just wait about 6 months. A lot of the naysayers are pointing out for its price its not worthwhile, but let it drop to say $349 and the fact its fast and good screen will help overcome Android's weakness in multitasking. Really, right now, just get a Chromebook and a smaller Android, total spend is about the same as this Pixel C but your productivity higher. You probably already own Android anyway, so just get a Chromebook.

Really don't get this detachable screen/keyboard phase, most people these days buying high end laptops have a tablet as well.

Should have got the Tab S instead at the same price. I got the S2 and the next week returned it to Samsung and got the S, screen seems better, feels sturdier in build quality and overall experience, actually feels faster, although I'm sure it's processor is a little weaker.

it is a good tablet no doubt, but it cannot replace a notebook. As an android tablet user I know that android is not made for this type usage in mind

In my opinion the Surface Tablets are the best tablets in the market. The iPad Air 2 is the best tablet when it comes to tablets running a mobile OS. Android tablets just aren't good enough, for me at least.

Sooner or later both Google and Apple will realise that what makes the Surface Pro line a true laptop replacement are it's Ultrabook CPUs and Desktop Class operating system. iOS and Android are still pretty basic & limited in their current form and while they have great ecosystems for mobile they just can't touch the suite of productivity solutions Win 32 apps offer. Nevermind that the Surfaces run mobile apps too.

As with the iPad Pro and iOS, I see this as first step towards making Android a viable productivity platform. They're going to expose new features in Android for productivity and push developers to write software from the ground-up to use it. No legacy desktop applications as a crutch/quick fix. Apple has a better chance of succeeding here, but there's no doubt that this is the way to go about it. I want to see Google turn development up a gear. I think the whole "be together not the same" thing was a cop-out to avoid the looming issues Android faces in the coming years. Cyanogen, Sense etc. are good forks of the system, but for each Sense there are a hundred poorly supported implementations. Android is a damn good operating system, and Google's services are second to none, but they need to take the reigns and be more commanding over the OEMs that use it. The barrier for entry to Google's services needs to be higher - allowing Samsung, LG etc. to keep barfing all over Android will only end in disillusionment in the user base. The days of will-they-won't-they updates and horrendous skins being acceptable are over. I ended up buying an iPhone 6 this year after a drought of decent Android hardware. I didn't want to, but it was either settle for a sub-par software experience for top-end hardware (Galaxy S6) or a brilliant software experience tied to mediocre hardware (HTC M9). Not good enough in 2015 - Android has been shipping for 7 years now.
