I love that people STILL come to Chromebook reviews just to bash it in the comment section. What drives that insecurity and sadness? Who exactly do you think you're swaying with your misplaced anger?
@nanobreaker

Half the folks also complain about how it lacks certain power applications people use. As if most of the population uses Adobe products or photography apps. And the folks who complain about the lack of those apps should be somewhat knowledgeable of the capability to install linux (if you need it of course).

You only want to spend time in your fantasy bubble reading how great and competitive your google thing is? This pixel thing is not exactly for sale in a safe haven, it's competing in a complex market with better offerings and the review is on a public site. At least google knows from negative comments what to do to make a better product and if this thing was actually knocking down the competition you sure wish the same people who bash it were able to see it too and you would have facts and reasons to counter the bashers, you should thank them to encourage google to improve their product. Only fierce competition creates brilliant products.

im still a few years away from getting a laptop - but im certain, if not confident that it will be a Google Chrome book - fo sho! im loving what im hearing - and i think this review is pretty unbias. The Verge Rocks!! Yes there are cheaper chrome books out there but i want a premium Chrome book.

Sure, it competes against ultra books which mostly does things like browsing, world docs, RU-vid etc. So i think it's fine if it runs chrome OS since i don't think any ultrabook can fully harness the power of say video editing on win 10

I just got a Pixelbook. This thing is awesome. I keep finding new things it can do that I didn't think a Chromebook was capable of. This is the future of personal computing. I love this thing. It's blazing fast. It does everything I need including graphic design with linux software. I can only see this getting better over time.

I’m happy to see ChromeOS, Windows and MacOS all doing well. 1) I like Windows but it’s dated. Windows 12 should hopefully resolve many of complaints. 2) I like MacOS but it doesn’t have many apps and Mac’s are super expensive. 3) I like ChromeOS but it also needs improvement. I think Mac is going to die due to the sheer stupidity of Apple. Apple sold its soul for profit and doesn’t make great products anymore.

Sam Bao Yes, there are touch drivers for Linux, I can’t believe you even had to ask. In fact you can download and install Ubuntu 17.10, their newest version to a ChromeBook, even Debian or Arch, etc. if Ubuntu isn’t your distro of choice . I use my PixelBook as a development machine and it’s utterly fantastic at this, how, well I have a full LAMP server installed under Debian, than I use CodeEnvy, a cloud based IDE to write my code in, as well as compile. Though Netbeans and Eclipse are available to me, as well as Adobe’s Cloud Suite. Simply install PlayOnLinux’s fantastic app for Wine and your off to the races. If you don’t want to install Linux, no problem, you can simply stream any desktop application over the browser. There are tons of services now that do this, example, I use rollapp.com for all of my Linux applications like Blender, yes, Blender works. Of course it does, I mean you can even stream Photoshop and it’s fast. Why do you think people are buying the HP X3 phone, no, it;s not because of Windows 10 for mobile, it’s because HP has a service that streams the most used business desktop applications, I.e. MS Office. So you can actually use a phone as your desktop. The issue here is that most of you simply do not know what you can do with a ChromeBook, let me fill you in, everything, yep, there is absolutely nothing a ChromeBook can’t do. Okay, yes, you are restricted to the type of hardware your using, I mean your not going to play Doom on an ARM ChromeBook, however, Steam works just fine on a i5 or above ChromeBook. I personally use RetroArch, in which allows me to play all of my favorite N64, SNES, NES, Sega, DreamCast, PlayStation 1 & 2, PSP, GameBoy, NeoGeo, etc. games. I even have replica USB game controllers for all of them, the N64 controller is friggen awesome. No, the PixelBook is not expensive for what your getting, A full i5u version, not the Y version you get when buying a MacBook 12", a absolutely gorgeous design, I dare say the best looking 2 in 1 laptop on the market today. As such I have zero regrets as there is nothing I can’t do on it. Now for the average user, I would say no, simply because most of you simply do not know what your doing and are to lazy to ever properly learn how to use ChromeOS to it’s fullest. I say lazy because you could learn how to hack the ChromeBook into a beast but most just don’t want to learn. As such all they’ll ever see is a browser, like most of these reviewers, they simply do not understand what ChromeOS can offer. Which is, the fastest OS there is, the most secure, awesome UI, Linux based, upgrades are in the background, Android built in, the ability to run full Linux Distro’s alongside ChromeOS, at the same time, awesome Citrix terminal so it’s the perfect machine for businesses and schools, did I say it’s fast, etc. Look, their not for everyone but those who say Chrome OS, the PixelBook is garbage, simply do not know what the hell they are talking about.

Can a chromebook replace... Mac OS: No; it doesn't have the power for video and photo editing that Macs have, which is why a lot of people use them Windows: No; the freedom of windows and gaming side of it is not replaceable by chrome os IPad Pro: Maybe??? It's less portable, but more versatile. Plus, it can do what an IPad can do but better and faster. Just summed up the video.

Great review! For me, the assistant integration is a big differentiator for this laptop. One question, when you've got the keyboard facing down, how do the keys hold up? That's one concern I have with this and other convertible laptops. Seems that, over time, the keys would suffer.

This is a GREAT mobile computing solution for most commuters and office workers. - Typed this on my Google PixelBook!! :) haha This can do all office work required with Office (word, excel and powerpoints). That should cover most light computing users. Let's be realistic. This is device is great because you are going to be using the google ecosystem. Google Drive (Docs, Spreadsheet, PowerPoint), RU-vid, Books, Keep Note Taking, Mail...the list goes on. If only Steve Jobs were alive. People are too entrenched on old way of thinking. What Google is doing here is really revolutionary with their immense ecosystem of productivity apps that rivals Microsoft. Steve Jobs if he were alive would market and show users how great it is. Too Bad google does not push this as hard as what apple does with its products. Also battery life on this thing is REALLY GOOD. Another major plus ... MAJOR plus is no vents. This thing is SOLID. No moving parts because no fans. Means I can use this anywhere without worrying about dust being a problem! Overall very VERY CONTENT with this purchase. Well worth the price!

About $200 - $400 is ok for a chromebook. But if you have $1000 to spend on a laptop, there are some very good windows and Mac OS laptops out there that can do almost all of this and so much more. Chrome books are ok, it’s just the software that lets it down in my opinion.

I would say, give google a few years. Now they've entered the premium laptop segments. Next step would be an improved chrome OS. A few years from now google would give Microsoft or Apple a run for their money like they did with smartphones. I remember when Android phones first came people bashed them because they were uglier, inferior to ios but now look where they are. As for now spending 1000 Dollars on a web Browser is insane but definitely Google is going in the right direction. I have always believed if google had created windows, they would have done a better job than Microsoft.

I use a Asus C302 and Android Apps run fine for general use, some are still just bloated up mobile apps but more are being optimised for Chromebooks. If there is anything specific i need i still have a high end Windows Laptop but there is pretty much nothing in general i cant do on this and its much quicker/better at it. Chrome OS hasn't matured enough yet to fully justify replacing if you need a high end computer with specific applications but for the average user Chrome OS is far better. Boots up in 10 seconds, doesn't slow down, built in security, doesn't fragment, etc.

I'm able to give a Pixelbook REAL world review because I gave it just over 1 year. The Pixelbook is awful. Google support is awful. I had Pixelbook for just over 1 year. The apps are very poorly optimized and often stop working with app updates. Many apps simply do not work on chrome OS. But about Google-specific software: Each & every OS software patch/update brought awful software bugs. Google support is awful. I gave it a full year trial and I wanted to love, heck, even like it but it's truly awful. I'm selling mine and going to move over to try Apple for the first time ever. I do not recommend Pixelbook at all. Buyer beware.

Now I'm gonna repeat my comment here which I first posted on Cnet. They was saying how Apple Watch will have two Apple Music apps on the watch and that is confusing and I said thats the problem Android used to have if someone owned a phone from Samsung they would know that most apps have 1 Google Version and ! by Samsung For example Google Photos and Gallery app by Samsung. I don't know why Apple is just not focusing on these little things anymore. I use a iPhone 7 plus and battery life has gone from excellent to poor because of iOS 11. My last android phone was a Nexus 5 and I still miss that phone as that was value for money. All these new phones Android or Apple just don't feel like I'm getting best bang for my buck. :(

Dieter @ the end: “for a platform that’s only 6 years old, that’s impressive”. Perhaps, but the iPad is nearly as old; so, let’s not play the sympathy card. How much longer are we going to say “google’s getting closer” before they actually produce a compelling chromebook for any core demographic? I use a Pixel laptop daily, so it would be neat to have seen this device find it’s purpose. It’s about time that Google escapes the confines of its niche demographic (“crossing the chasm” yada-yada) and comes to terms with the reality that it might want to produce a device at a $599 price point (no backlit keyboard, lower quality screen, no cell connectivity, m3 processor, ..but keep the metal build). So, I’m torn here; what’s their motivation for producing this? Where’s the customer segment? I see enthusiasm to grow their stake.. but the approach could improve. I understand not wanting to step on the toes of chrome competitors at a lower price points, but I am reading their current effort as one where they don’t want this device to succeed to (anywhere near) the extent that it can. Which is interesting, considering their traction in k-12 environments.

The clueless people here smh. You should try a chromebook, it's fantastic. It does less, but it excels in what it does. It feels like flowing. Just buy one for 150/250 dollars and you will see. Besides, why buy a tablet when you can have a chromebook that works with Android apps? This machines are convenient, fast, reliable, always up to date. It's not windows, it's not supposed to be.

I don't get why chrome os should run on x86. Google could've used arm for better battery life and compatibility with Android apps. I mean, chrome os is just a suped up chrome browser and it could open up a variety of arm based processors (and thus lower prices but high performance/specs) from different sources (samsung, mediatek, huawei, etc).

Seriously what are they smoking at google? $1000 for a chrome book? They must have topped apple’s margins. This pixel book is just a hp spectre x360 with glass accent and a 3:2 screen

So... Useless. I like tablets because they are convenient, so when you're on the phone with someone or just doing something else you can just pick it up, browse the web and get what you need. A 7-10" tablet is enough. I don't need a laptop for that. And when I need to sit down at a computer and do my job nothing will beat a desktop computer. And even if I needed mobility, I'd still go for a laptop - probably a cheaper one, but if I really want to get something fancy I'd go for a Surface Book 2 which can double as a tablet, so the point at the end of the video about the pixelbook being good in planes becomes invalid. A Surface would do a much better job. And you can just put the keyboard/base in your backpack.

Things i dont like about this device: 1- Price 2- Ugly Pixel design 3- Does not come with a stylus 4- Huge Bezels 5- Ugly range of colors not that someone cares about my opinion, just pointing that out

Because of the current state of ChromeOS I ended up going with the Macbook Pro. I mean, just 2-3 months ago the google shop Chromebook section was a disaster - almost as if they forgot about it. They haven't been consistent with promoting ChromeOS and other companies that make Chromebooks are doing a terrible job at it. They're also hard to find - every store I go to has very old ones only. I have no problem with ChromeOS being revived but they should have found a way to keep the hype up.

If this thing was £800 then I would be seriously considering it for me next Laptop. But at £999 Google can get lost. For that price you can get a 2015 Macbook Pro or Surface

I love my Chromebook, I use it all the time, but I would NEVER pay more than $400 for a Chromebook. Regardless of how beautiful and powerful it is, it's still just Chromebook.

I agree a Windows laptop or Mac is better at getting that " final 10%" you need but an iPad Pro?? Really?? I'll take Chrome OS over iOS for productivity any day of the week.

Only a fool would pick chromebook over macbook air for $1000. Macbook can do everything chromebook can, and much much more.

Wow, such a biased review. All I hear is bunch of excuses to justify the high price. For $1000 you can get any i5 ultrabook with Windows on it, instead of this glorify browser android emulator.

Can this replace an iPad Pro? You bet. In fact, ANY Chromebook can (though either way, you're still better off with a Windows machine though...)

great build quality, great design, great specs, operating system......no thanks. I'd rather spend an extra 2-300 bucks more for a device that has great build quality, great design, great specs and an operating system that will let me do 100% of what i need it to do.

This chromebook is filling a niche that doesn't need to be filled by this device. For 1000 dollars plus, you could purchase a mid to high end surface product or any decent brand that runs windows. Google is falling in love with the smell of its own farts and in that intoxication they slapped a 1000 dollar price tag on this hobbled piece of trash. At a 400 dollar pricepoint this is a value proposition, but at 1000 it's just a summary of their arrogance.

They should make a pixelbook that runs windows. Not google chrome for $1000 no thanks lol. I like where it is going though, eventually Android and ios will get to the point where they can replace your laptop. For now I can wait even though having Google assistant in your laptop would be great.

I've had a 200 dollar Chromebook 2 years ago and I don't really see any apps that take advantage of a i5 or 128gb of storage. Can someone who still currently uses a chrome book explain how either of the 2 hardware overkill is being used effectively with the software.

Considering I'm a Networking student that needs to run a lot of virtual machines, then hell no, it cannot replace Windows or even MacOS for me. What a waste of money. Shame they hold it back using Chrome OS.

I want this hardware to run Windows...why couldn't the Surface Laptop be made like this instead of using the grimy alcantara fabric? Microsoft will not get my money until they figure that out.

Just get a Razer blade stealth and dual boot remix OS on it. Android (stock) still isn't optimized for larger screens or laptops.

Keep in mind that millions are about to spend that super prized $1000 on a new cell phone that is way less capable than this, with much worse specs, and overall can do about the %60 that this is made to do. (android apps. Yes, they are less optimized for this platform but keep in mind it's still in infancy.)

Guys that are saying to get a windows machine or a Macbook, can you get a laptop with those specs in that form factor with touchscreen? Ignoring the fact that it has ChromeOS, can I get a laptop that sleek and that battery life with those specs? I think the only thing I can think of that even comes close is the Dell XPS models. Serious question, are there any other suggestions? Edit: In that price range as well.

It's so funny how something so many people see as unjustifiably extravagant can be so cherished by those chosen few who "get it". Maybe it's just for us? Are you one of the techno-geek chosen? Buy one and find out.

Ha. More expensive than ipad pro yet it does less. All the Google stuff is so expensive yet it doesn't seem so premium when compared to some Samsung or even Huawei or plenty others or don't offer much more support. I think the pixel is getting 3 years. I wouldn't touch them unless free. Currently using a windows laptop and a note 8 for work and apple stuff for personal use.
