I think the acoustic lens is controlling the polar response which has more effect on sound staging than simple phasing does. Many speakers have a narrowing polar map as it nears the upper frequency limit of the driver. But if the lens is balancing the overall off axis response, then the reflected sounds will sound very natural and similar to the on axis frequency. This is rare in speakers.
For 22 years I have had Paradigm Reference tower speakers and Studio Reference center. They are outstanding on every genre of music I play on them, as well as tv. I have recently been going and listening to different speakers for comparison, and I think Paradigm…even with their age….are equal to, or superior to, all the speakers I have heard. One exception would be the B&W 702s…….which are more than twice the price. A totally different sound, but they really give an excellent presentation of recordings.
These speakers really surprised me. After a long break-in, they became much less bright than any previous Paradigm models I've heard. Paired with a low-power Luxman tube amp in my small listening room, the sound is beautifully clear, smooth and accurate. Superb imaging. Very efficient. They aren't as warm as Harbeth or Sonus Faber, but they def are not "bright" after they break in. Great speakers for a small tube amp.
@@cafiveohsrockbandremix9254I directly compared the Paradigms to Sonus Faber. I still adore these speakers. I had to pack them up a few weeks ago for a move and even though I have another system to listen to, I miss the sound of these. I’ll have a much larger listening space in the new house and plan to replace these with Spatial Audio speakers, but I’ll definitely find a place in the house for these to live so I can continue hearing them.
If I ever had the means, these are the bookshelvers I'd get. I'll totally admit to being a Paradigm fanboy. Glad to know these aren't just attractive but capable as well.
I bought the Paradigm 200B Bookshelves, Beautiful speakers, sound great for 15 min, then headaches set in, even with EQing the Treble down. Went with Wharfedale Denton 80's and are much warmer. Wonderful looks and build quality, it's a shame they are way too bright.
@@thomasward00 So you are telling us, you bought speakers that are bright cause you bought them blind??? You dont check how they gonna sound in your home with your equipment? Yes sure, Harbeth and Sonus are warmer, but with correct electronics they are not bright. In fact you have the possibility to adjust your sound from brighter to darker. And brighter sound is less borring, feels faster, more detail, makes thrumpets really shine. I had studio series and Signature series and I got one set of electronics on which the same speakers sound brighter or darker depending which signal out i choose. to connect This speakers are not for begginers, they also need the right size room with correct set enough far from the walls. And those walls nice to have some diffusors or/and absorbers. After you complete requirements you gonna be glad your sound was bright, cause now after toning it down, you might start to get loosing details and some smoothnes if tone it more. If you like darker sound choose Wharfedale Elysium.
Thx Jay! Some day I might get it when i feel 1TDX is getting boring. Right now, I am super happy with it. Even a friend who own $200,000 McIntosh systems with MG 20.1 big ass tall speakers, he loved it. He was quite impressive and listen one song after another for 4 hrs. Anyway thx again.
Thanks for reviewing some Paradigm Jay. Their line was part of my introduction to the audiophile fold and into a more future-fi experience. A pair of their simple, powered and forward sounding A2 Shift bookshelves is still serving me well for gaming, vid streaming and music listening in my office. Hope to see other audio that is off the beaten path as well.
about time we see Paradigm reviews. Please do the Persona Series (more affordable) and the Monitor 3000F series etc. (correction I meant to say Premier series)
Re: "The Look" sounds like a "guiro" -- long hollow wooden percussion instrument with several notches in it and you drag a drum stick over it to make a scraping ratchet sound, coupled with a high-hat on what I'm pretty sure is Linn Drum or an Linn Drum emulator. The Linn -- one of the most classic, well known, drum machines ever made that, in spite of the fact most are turning 40, they're still coveted on recordings as a gold standard. You've heard it your entire lifetime and but probably didn't know it.
Love the comment/question portion at the end! Perfect length and great comparison questions answered. Lastly, judging from your sound taste preference, are B&W speakers not your “cup of tea”? Cheers! 👋🏽
I have the 100F (from the Prestige 85!)… with the AVM 70… and the MCA 325… would like to hear you about the difference with the STR lines (amp and preamp) for music listening…
There’s a video here on RU-vid where they take the lens off of the speaker. I was surprised to see that it’s actually the whole faceplate that comes off, not just the lens
i’ve been doing audiophile for 35 yrs if you can score a used B&W CM6 s2 and a Velodyne Minivee and pair it with Bluesound Powernode, no bookself can’t beat this aside from the 805 d4 or 705 s3 for the money you’ll pay no bookself setup can compare to this setup.
I compared these and the Heco Revolution 3. These are very good, my preference I thought the Heco was more to my liking! I really like these though. Tight sound!
Dude, You landed the only speaker I failed to obtain for our SpeakerFest 2022 Exhibition August 27th in Phoenix, AZ. We have 18 Standmounts under $3,000 MSRP . Paradigm folks are hard to crack. ATC 11,, Buchardt S400 Mk2, Triangle 40th Annv. Comete, GR Research Encore, Sonus Faber Lumina 2, Monitor Audio Gold, Totem Sky, Golden Ear BRX, Elac Vela, KEF R3, Philharmonic BRM, KLH 5, Polk L200, Falcon Acoustics 5, Tekton Monitor and a new product the LSA 80 ! Many were included due to your reviews. Thanks!
I hear you on the non-fatiguing but fatigusing speakers. I had a pair of Audio Vector bookshelves that did that, I can't say that they were bright in any way, but the amount of information being thrown at me fatigued my brain. I think that's due to the information demanding so much of your attention instead of just existing in the room and you having the option of tuning in when you want to.
Now that you reviewed Paradigm founder Canadian speaker wend are you going to do a review on the other Canadian company, Bryston mini T and Bryston model T.
Reviewer comparisons are usually new speakers to new speakers, but I've been cross-shopping some used speakers, too, based on price (Cdn $1,500 range). This has turned out to be a lot of fun, actually. For example, I just swapped out a pair of Elac Unfi UBR62's for a pair of B&W CM6 S2's from 2014, piano black, tweeter on top. I believe they retailed for $3k-ish, but I paid $1,350 (just as airy and less laid back than the Elacs). This opens up a whole world of interesting comparisons: If you have $X available, what can you get, new or used?
When you described the forwardness of the mid-highs this is the Paradigm sound. I don't like this voicing of many brand who do this. recessing of the mids is not good either as some horn speaker brands. Thanks for the review.
Hi, Jay. How are you doing? Do you consider to tell us what do you thing about your Charles Eames’ chair? I’m willing to buy one but I need someone trustworthy to give me relevant impressions about this product. Could you help me in this regard? Please!
Love your reviews Jay, thanks for sharing. I'm thinking of upgrading my Paradigm premiere 800f and was thinking about either the Paradigm Founder 100F or now after seeing your review on the Arendal 1723, which do you think would be best upgrade between those two?
Have you ever listen to anything from Audiovector? Their areteé models I really like year after year. Would be great to hear what you think of them! Have a good time!
Yo Jay! For a home theater setup paired with a center and sub, can you help me decide between this Paradigm 40B, Buchardt S400 MKII (with 3rd Buchardt for center), CSS Audio, or KEF LS50 Meta? Mainly movies and tv use, but would love to start listening to music as well! Would really appreciate your opinion, new to your channel.
Well…you sort of failed to mention that the speakers in Canada were $2,600 EACH…or roughly $5,400 a pair…in the US, the speakers sell for $2,200 Each, or roughly just under $4,800 a pair…hard for me to justify these speakers in that price range… Great vid… Congratulations on your new speaker and the design is phenomenal…
I really hate the way high-end audio stuff is sold -- the nearest dealer is about 1,000km away from me (in Europe) and they don't even list this model -- and give no prices for anything they offer. This is typical here in Europe ... hate it :-/
Man, these speakers looks really, REALLY great!! Additionally they are cat-proof (scratch proof - I have a giant ragdoll and believe me - these kind of membane protection is crucial, also with kids ;) ) Another thing - often very good speakers sound not interesting and "just regular" at the first listening sessions.
We have 2 ragdolls, and I’m always thinking about scratching, stands etc. I think I’ll audition these and possibly depending on the outcome support my local retailer and manufacturer…
Jay, in my experience a system or component that is of quality, will give you lots of detail, and will not be fatiguing. The reason is that quality components deliver details so that you don't have to search for them, and thus the experience is relaxing and NEVER fatiguing. I have built my share of speakers and the reasons for listening fatigue often result from poor crossover components, and poor crossover implementation. I would bet you that if you open those paradigm speakers you will find both iron core inductors and sand cast resistors and along side some electrolytic capacitors. IMO those are things that should never be used in a decent speaker.
if it only were sealed, since i have subwoofers its a waste. maybe Founder 70LCR would be be better. but i really dont like the coax being bigger than the side woofers on that model.
Hi Jay great review!....how do these sound in comparison to Sonus Faber Sonettos or Luminas? I love Paradigms but the new Founders line hasn't got a whole lot of attention with reviewers until now....thanks for that
I know it’s comparing bookshelves to floorstanders, but considering they’re very similar prices and judging by what was said in the video, the Polk Reserve R700s are probably the better all-rounder with a deeper bass extension. But I’m even more curious on your take on Paradigm’s tower offerings now to compare apples to apples.
The way Jay describes these speakers reminds me in the beginning regarding my lovely wife of 20 years.🤔🤫🤭 A lot of information in the beginning and sorta fatiguing, but as time goes on, I got used to it and now adore her!😋😛🤩 I wish she only cost 2 grand!😝🤪🙄🤐🤓 Now my x wife, I could buy a couple of high-end pair of Wilson's. Prenuptial and all! For you kiddies out there, a Prenuptial only covers you usually for what you bring into a marriage not what is earned while married!🙄🤯🤮😳😉
I bet paired with Anthem (also owned by Paradigm) I bet they'd sound great. Prefer Anthem over NAD all day myself. I know Jay likes the SF sound, which I find uninvolving and boring. Paradigm is traditionally a more forward sound, which I like.
Thanks for this interesting review- interesting in terms of your experience of the soundstage and imaging. I guess your beautifully treated room helps to bring out those strengths. I use the bigger brothers, 120H. The 2 amazing things about them, except for the out-of-the-world bass, are the voices and the music enjoyment. I have never heard individual voices in harmonies as clearly as I hear them through these paradigms, even with R&B music; and I love how I just enjoy listening to music of all genres. I look forward to listening to music everyday. I believe your review of the 120H is coming soon?
Appreciate your reviews Jay. Ive learned alot over the past year getting into this hobby. Love me some James Blake. If you are not familiar with the work of Nicolas Jaar, I highly recommend. Check "Space is Only Noise" and specifically the track "Colomb." Also his band Darkside albums are also great.
I have mine connected to a nad c700 sounds great but i think they need some more power. I wonder if upgrading the amp and keeping the nad as a preamp a good idea or another integrated amp ? I was also thinking of getting a small sub , and that would free up some power with the sub taking care of the low end .
I know it has been quite some time since you reviewed the Dynaudio Special 40's, but from what you remember, how would you say the Paradigm 40b's compare? I'm looking to replace my old, but still pretty good, B&W 685 S2s.
