ℹ️ ABOUT THIS EPISODE:
If you're like us, you are probably seeing more and more gooseneck setups on RVs these days. I had been wondering why for the last year, so I did some research. If you find the right product, gooseneck towing can not only increase your gas mileage, but it can be a smoother ride, save a TON of bed space and can even be easier to hook up.
In all our research, it was clear that there was, in our opinion, the best product in the market: the Gen-Y Executive Pin Box. This beast is built with Torsion Flex technology and is the smoothest ride towing that we have ever had. It's Made in America too!
We ended up touring the manufacturing facility to see if this was truly made as well as the team at Gen-Y was telling us. Hands down.... they weren't kidding!

We love our Gen-Y Gooseneck hitch. It is a rough ride for the first 600 miles or so. We have 7500 miles on the hitch and wouldn't trade it for anything. We got a tire step... it makes it a lot easier to connect the safety chains. The first step we ordered was 19" wide, it did not work well with our F450 19.5 rims. We got a 22 inch wide step and love it.

You’re totally right about the rough ride 😂 But after it smooths out… holy cow it’s amazing! Love the idea about the tire step. That might stop me from whacking my head on the cap when I jump into the bed!

I wish I would have seen this video about two years ago! We purchased a TT instead of a 5th wheel for three reasons, one of which was not wanting to “lose the use of our truck bed”. This seems to address that. Probably still would get the TT though… maybe. LOL Blessings to you all. We have Shelties, so can relate on the puppies being such a big part of your life.

Good video, thanks. Something to think about: I went from an Andersen hitch on our previous 5th wheel trailer (Montana) to the Gen-Y on our new Brinkley. I really like the Gen-y for the extra bed space but dislike how close the tailgate gets to the trailer. Doing a little research and I saw that Gen-Y sells the "Goosepuck" that pushes the ball 5" back toward the tailgate of the truck. I think that extra distance will be huge when hitching up. I ordered one last night and can't wait to try it.

PROBLEMS! READ THE FULL COMMENT! I tow a gooseneck horse trailer with my Ford F350 shortbed with the B&W turnover ball installed. I had this exact GEN-Y gooseneck hitch installed on my new 5th wheel by the RV dealer. I ordered it online and had it drop shipped to the RV dealer. The dealer had never heard of the GEN-Y and was so impressed with it they became a dealer. Now for the problems. I had issued with the turn radius with the shortbed, the 5th wheel was to close to my cab when turning, and not that sharp of a turn either. I was very depressed and wondered what was I going to do? So I called the big online seller where I had ordered it from. They were no help at all. I started searching around on the web and found an extender that moves the ball back 4 inches and fits right in the B&W pocket. Problem solved! But then I decided to really solve the problem and purchased a new more powerful Ford F350 Longbed truck with the puck system! No issues now right? Wrong!!!! So a months later, I was backed to finally go on a trip and guess what? There wasn't enough space between my the end of my tailgate and the 5th wheel. Argh!!!! So, I put the tailgate up and continued backing up a few inches more and got the GEN-Y down on the ball. But now the space between the bumper and the 5th wheel wasn't sufficient to maneuver. So I'm stuck again, way worse than my original problem with the shortbed. Wife wasn't impressed with the GEN-Y or me at this point. Spent all this money on a new truck and we couldn't go camping. AGAIN So back to the drawing board again. Searching around the internet I located a GEN-Y product uses the puck system and moves the ball location back by 5 inches. This product only costs another $500 plus dollars. And now you have a new contraption in your bed which defeats the whole clean and available bed. So yes, the GEN-Y is built really well, BUT it has cost me so much frustration and extra money it's just ridiculous! So before you install one, make sure that your clearances work for your truck. It didn't for me, twice!!!

As far as warranty, may depend on manufacturer. I have verified with Brinkley about switching out on a Z model and they prefer the Gen-Y (it is standard on the G model - choice of pin or gooseneck) and believe they will be better for the chassis and frame long term. Since warranty goes through them, they have said it will obviously not void it even though it is a Lippert frame.

Gooseneck is on heavier trailers because the trailer can lean with out flexing the trailer frame,as in horse trailers and equipment trailers that go off road. On semi trailers the fifth wheel stays flat but the truck frame and suspension is designed to flex.

The gooseneck is much easier on a pickup truck frame and suspension because it can pivot 360° a fifth wheel just back and forth, and we all know Campground roads can twist back and forth which makes it much easier on the camper and the truck with the gooseneck

I used my brothers truck to tow our 5th wheel home and instantly took off the king pin and put a Reese Goosebox on it. My big reason was I need my truck bed. I put a BW turnover hitch in it as it wasn't factory prepped and now all I have to do is flip the ball over and I get my bed back instead of having to remove a 200lbs hitch. The ride is also better, but that wasn't my primary reason. It's a little more difficult to hook up, but you get used to it. Not all states require the safety chains, but I bought mine from Reese and hook them up every time. Better safe than sorry.

Well... not knocking it, but i have a question to anyone: Are the benefits worth the hassle of climbing in and out of the bed for the safety chains?? Also, once you get under, if you put the gate up, don't get in a rush and frustrated because your ball isn't lined up and pull out.

Have you noticed any stability issues when towing with the gooseneck versus the fifth wheel hitch? Hey, great video but a quick question it looks like your Ford is obviously a Dooley but it looks like it's a short box. What's the length of your box on your Ford? And do you find that the Gen Y hitch allows you to get close to 90 degrees or did you have to get the gen y extension to push the ball back further in the bed?
@PawsForLove
@PawsForLove 4 месяца назад
Hey there! Our bed is actually an 8’ long bed. We didn’t need an extension since it’s the long bed version.

??? Y would you place all of that pin weight on such a small focused area. I see you have the ford factory 5th wheel “puck” system in the bed. It allows for better weight distribution on the truck frame.

These trucks are set up to carry very heavy gooseneck loads. Have you ever seen the “hotshot” setups that are hauling 3-4 cars? That pin weight is much higher than our Fifth Wheel.

Curious what options you have for changing the height to make your trailer level using this type hitch. I have the B&W 25K fifth wheel hutch and it has some adjustment up and down for height. I am curious if you had any issues when you switched over. Is your F350 4WD? I hear there are balls that are taller in case you are low in the front and need to raise the height
@PawsForLove
@PawsForLove 11 месяцев назад
This is a really good question! At the end of the day, the way to adjust height on this is to adjust which holes you're using in the pinbox. I feel that overall, I'd assume this will work on almost every truck and you'll have plenty of clearance between the bed and RV. Our F350 is 4WD. Personally, I'd really like to level our truck with the 2" spacer in the front, but it's hard to justify the expense!
@dank8017
@dank8017 9 месяцев назад
I believe Gen Y also makes a 5" offset ball if you need more room between truck and trailer. Also do you find it more difficult to hitch up or getting things lined up properly? Or is it a two person job, or if you have a bed view camera how does it go? I know with my traditional fifth wheel as you know is fairly simple to hitch. It does look like an awesome hitch though.
@PawsForLove
@PawsForLove 9 месяцев назад
I believe they do as well! It was certainly an adjustment backing up, but it is now a one person job. It could go a little faster with 2 people. The reason is that the camera is good to line you up side-to-side, however it's hard to gauge your depth sometimes. After doing it a dozen times you definitely get a feel for where to stop though. I just do it myself now and it only takes about 5 minutes in total hooking up.

We haven’t traded in our TT for a 5th wheel yet but are in the market. A while back there was information out there that said if you swap out to a gooseneck, it would void the trailers manufacturers warranty. Do you know if there’s any truth to that?
@PawsForLove
@PawsForLove Год назад
This is definitely true. It does void the frame warranty. However, they have had zero known issues up to this point.

Hello George! Thank you so much. We are so grateful that you enjoy them! I'd say that we have over 20,000 miles towing on the Gen-Y Gooseneck now... and it's safe to say that it's amazing! I don't know how, but it seems to tow better and better every time we use it. Getting used to backing up took a few tries, but I'll never tow a fifth wheel set up again. I highly recommend!

Yes we did! We didn’t want to maintain an airbag, and at the time of us getting the Gen-Y, there wasn’t a Reese available for our RhinoBox. The Gen 3 from Reese would work, but we would still choose Gen-Y if we did it all over again.

@PawsForLove Год назад
Hey Alex! Technically it does void the Lippert Frame warranty at this point in time. However, there have been zero documented incidents thus far. Additionally, Reese doesn’t make a pin box for the Rhinobox setup that we have on our Valor at this point in time.
@sandipelczynski8003
@sandipelczynski8003 Год назад
@@PawsForLove Reese does make a hitch for the Rhino Box. The part number is 94920, supported by Lippert. We just purchased one and will be having it installed soon as our trailer is currently at the dealer for warranty work. The older gen 1 & 2 Reese Goose boxes did not fit the Rhino mount but with a slight modification to 4 of the bolt holes it would work. All that needed to be done was to slot these holes 3/8" towards the front of the hitch and the hitch would bolt up. Bob

Greetings! I'm actually doing the very same research right now for our rig. I have to admit that my focus is not really on freeing up the bed of my truck, it's more around ease of hitching and smoothing out the ride. The question that I have, that I've not seen addressed anywhere, is how is the side to side flex? The up/down is handled by the torsion bars, but what about side to side? Thanks for the great video! It was very informative and good to see the ease of the switch out. Safe travels!
@PawsForLove
@PawsForLove Год назад
This is a GREAT question! Until you pointed out that it’s not been addressed anywhere, I hadn’t realized that. Such a great point! After reading your comment, I reached out to Jason at Gen-Y. He is the gentleman in the video that walks us through all the information. He first pointed out that when the fifth-wheel does move side to side, it will pivot on the ball, which means that it doesn’t technically compress the rubber (Torsion Flex) as much. But figuratively speaking, if the coupler was “solid mounted” on to something, and not on a ball or something that pivots, he assured me that there would be some “flex” to the rubber and would provide you with some level of benefit. Let me know if that answered your question or if there is anything else I could help with. - Sean

@sidx001 Год назад
First, thank you so much for the reply! My question originates from thinking about what happens when I go offroad for some boondocking. There have been a couple of times that the drop off from the paved road to the side road had to be taken at a little bit of an angle. My Reese 5th wheel hitch pivots side to side which provides enough flex that I don’t worry much…I still take it nice and slow, but the flex is there. That’s why I was wondering about the gooseneck side to side flex. It makes sense that within the hitch to ball connection that there would be some give, just wasn’t sure how far that would go. I hope this makes sense! Thanks again for your reply, I’m looking forward to hearing about your overall impressions of the GenY hitch!
