I worked a night job at the time so I never got to watch the game. This video was awesome. Perfect song with great editing. The picture of the jump into the team after the tieing goal would make a perfect poster.
What a year, wish I could have been on this team. Played with a lot of those guys but effed up my high school career. Every MN hockey kids dream is to do just what these guys did for the maroon and gold.
Been coming back to this video since you posted it. Jordan Leopold & Pat O'Leary were friends of my big sister, and I remember watching this game in a Plymouth basement like it was two weeks ago. Thank you for your amazing editing on this
Just introduced my 6-year-old son to the Mighty Ducks movie and watched it myself for the first time in over 25 years, and heard this song on the closing credits. I was like “Hey, this is the song from the Gophers championship video!” (and now it all makes sense)
WOW! Awesome video, I got chills!! I was at Stub and Herbs watching this game and the bar was packed. When that OT goal went in, the place erupted, beer everywhere, pandemonium. Incredible.
I watched this game with two former roommates. We went crazy when the Gophers won the game. We jumped up out of out chairs and cheered. One of those roommates was my best friend Tim. He passed away in '08 from a congenital heart disease. Every time I watch this video it reminds me of him and how we high fived and cheered after the win. A simple hockey game I know.. but what a great memory. What can I say? We're from Minnesota... the State of Hockey!
truly one of the best sports videos on youtube with the best possible song. well done. and to this day this is the most exciting hockey game i've ever seen.
I remember watching this game with my cousins and my dad. We get season tickets to the gophers. What an awesome night. Unforgettable, you will never find another team like that.
I will never forget being at this game. For as long as I live, and I live to remember, that this will be the memory of a life time. So long ago and I can only remember the passion as if it were last night. This is the most exciting game I'll ever go to. GO GOPHERS!! (:
Wow. I'm finding this comment 6 years later and love it. Huge gopher fan, but I love a good rivalry. That's what makes it fun. Folks being gross about it ruins it. Wherever you are, props to you!
This only falls behind Kirby Pucketts game winning homer and the Twins winning the World Series in 91 (I was only 2 in 87 cant remember any of it) as best sports moment in my life. Love it. Lets go Gophers, lets ride Kangas to a National Championship. But even if we dont win this team has shown a lot of heart this year. Plus next year we return most our players plus Jordan Schoeder and Aaaron Ness headline a gret recruiting class. Go Gophs!!!
I was pretty little when they won this, but I was still a die hard fan (I was in 2nd grade). The two things I remember most about this game were the score was 4-3 and Matt Koalska jumped over the boards at the end. It's always been my dream to be a gopher hockey cheerleader. The gophers are definitely a team worth cheering for, and this shows it!
that was the best game i've ever been to. Johnny Pohl's shot was perfect, right off the pipe then in. Matt Koalska's goal was great too, he shot it and it went through about 8 guys and found the back of the net.
One of the greatest memories in my life and easily the best hockey game I've seen at any level!!! I think we'll hear Wally scream, "THE GOPHERS WIN! THE GOPHERS WIN!", once again this year! SKI U MAH!!
Pure genius by Lucia to call a timeout there. I hate to say it being a Gopher fan but another team this year reminds me of this 2002 team...THE WISCONSIN BADGERS. I know fellow Gopher fans, I hate to say it, but they do. They have a Hobey contender at defense like the Gophs did with McBain, plus their team is built on defense with McBain,McDonaugh, and Gardiner, remember Martin,Ballard,Leopold...See the similarities, and have just enough offense to win, plus a good goalie who can get hot.
My favorite Minnesota Hockey moments: High School: North St. Paul beating Hill Murray in OT 2005 Section Quarterfinals NHL: Wild beating Colorado in OT 2003 Game 7 NCAA: Gophers beating Maine in OT 2002 National Championship
i was a freshman that year. season ticket holder with my roommate and two other guys in the dorm room. absolutely epic. then, out to university ave to witness the riots - anybody who was anybody was there! SKI U MAH!
my favorite video. if you still have original footage it would be nice to re-upload at a higher resolution..awesome job & fits the song soooo well! Thanks for this, just never gets old.
This was the original. It was created by a friend of mine and the technology wasn't up to par yet. This channel ripped off the video, however without monetization active it's cool to spread the pride on ice!
BEST team ever right there!! i remember watchin this watchin this back in 02 i loved that season i remember sometimes when the puck was gettin jammed infront of our net and i think pohl and leopold would count to 3 and lift the net up to get the whistle lol... good times
@titangirl2013 I was there to. Your parents are right. Loudest I have ever heard the X get....and that includes Wild playoff games (season ticket holder) and even concerts! The place was electric that night. What made it so much more special is how QUIET it was, down a goal...58 seconds left. The place might as well of crumbled to the ground when the game was tied late. Simply epic, a night I will never forget.
I remember watching this when i was 14 and listening to Wally Shaver and Lou Nanne instead of those biased ESPN announcers. One of the greatest sports moments of my life!
I recall watching this game and believe the Shutte player from Maine (the one that did the 'shhhhhh" gesture to the crowd after he scored his 1st goal) was the one that got called for the pentatly in OT. Also I think Grant Potulny, who had the game winner, was the only non-Minnesotan on the gophers that year. Thank goodness Lucia dind't keep that same policy of "ONLY MN players" that Woog did
@mankatowestgolf Agreed brother. Sometimes I find myself watching it like 5 times in a row. Twas a magical ride that year. Will never forget it. Hopefully they get anot Nat Champ. soon!
hands down past game ever played, the last year duluth game real close. weird it all happens in minnesota! hockey state, no big deal. and second i wish i was old to enough to go out and party the W!!
The greatest hockey game ever. I watched this game with 15 of my closest friends and I can still feel the intensity of the room. Fucking Sioux suck.. And so does St. Cloud. Come on Gophers, The championship is there for the taking.. SKI-U-MAH..... M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A minnesota minnesota yeeeaaahhh GOPHERS
