FINALLY got my GoPro Hero 7 external microphone adapter in the mail today. Its a popular request online to get an external audio source for the camera, so I figured I would show you guys which one I purchased and go over how to set it up while doing an audio test as well. Let me know what you think!

Go into protune on your go pro and switch the audio from "auto" or "wind mic" to "stereo" to get the best quality inbuilt audio quality from you gopro

I fully agree, pro tune and adjusting it from Auto to stereo sounds way more crisp, and buy one of them wind Slayer foam sock things when it's wind and slip over it to refuse wind noise big time

Ok so.... I really didn't hear much of a difference inside a little bit better outside less Echo but a wired lavalier microphone is really useless you need to get a wireless microphone so you could station the camera in one spot and record your audio from a long distance away which is the most impressive way to do it!

I could have been with these other comments 11 montths ago, but noooo, I'm Mr. Procrastinator. Thanks for a moment of your time, and I appreciate your thoughts. I have the GoPro Pro 3.5 mm mic adapter and was wondering if not having the TRR to TR adapter was the cause of my not having much volume/power from my inexpensive lavalier mic? Thanks in advance.

Man, turns out, it is better to buy an external recorder and sync the audio. I don't know, just finding it too way expensive (adapter+dicent quality mic) Thx for the video.

Gah, spent ages trying to get my external mic working, and realised I had the ttrs-trs cable in the box the mic came in too.

Are there any settings needed done on the GoPro or is it simply plug and play?

Great video as always, the external mic always makes a difference and sounds more professional. I'm a big fan of the fir wind filters too. They have a pretty significant impact.

Yeah if I can't make a reasonable one for cheap myself - I'll be buying one. We shall see. Definitely need a wind filter on the water though. Thanks Inspector!

PS - to be crystal clear, are there both TRRS (female) to TRS, AS WELL AS, TRS (female) to TRRS ? I am paying close attention and there seems to indeed be both and there also seems to be confounding information as to which one to use. Thanks for clarification.

can you just use a normal usb c adapter to 3.5mm jack? to avoid that big ol block adapter?

Truthfully seeing this mess of wires gets me straight to looking for alternatives to go pro. What the hell is this mess just for decent audio? Reminds of the the new MacBooks with only usb-c.

If you buy a cheaper mic that isn’t the rode, do you still need that adapter?

YOu need to look at the lens and not the screen. It's apparent in the video. It's a hard habit to break I know but if you're sat at a desk you can put the screen down and force yourself to do it.

Yes I know... This is a bad habit of mine and in some of my videos you'll notice I do better but looking at the screen is so enticing! Thanks for this! Always good to get good feedback.

Hi Alex. I have the exact same setup as you show and I can't get any sound. Is there some trick about how or when you plug things in? I think I noticed you didn't plug the mic all the way into the adapter but that didn't work either. And yes, I tested the mic on my phone and it works.

hey man so i recently just got this setup as well but whenever i start recording it seems like sometimes it just stops working and goes to the default microphone for some reason and i have the cables rubberbanded to hold them in so they dont come unplugged. Do you have any idea what it could be? Also i see that you're a fishing channel, i am too man haha

I have these exact same components and it doesn't seem to be working. I'm starting to think my adapter is faulty. My rode mic works on my other equipment but I get no sound when plugged into go pro 7. Did you run into any issues like this or did it just work?

I haven't run in to any issues like that. If the components are hooked up exactly as I have them and its still not working then i would assume you have a faulty cable or faulty port on your go pro. Triple check everything is plugged in correctly and your using the correct cables.

Thanks for this. I just got an external mic for my Hero 7 black. Is the TRRS->TRS adapter necessary? I don't have one of those. Also, does the camera automatically know/switch to the external mic when it's plugged in, or do you have to do something in the settings? I have a Rode "VideoMicro" mic.

Gursi Singh there are cheaper adapters that have the correct sockets but I’m not sure they will work. Wish I knew they would because $50 is a lot for a little adapter.

I wouls need to connect an XLR mic not a lav mic. A lav mic sounds terrible and its very limited.

The lav mic I use around water for fishing so I do have the luxury of an XLR mic - but I'm sure it sounds better from what I've heard!

Great video! Thank you for sharing… Question: Can an “IK Multimedia iRig2” be connected to the GoPro adapter? I currently plug my condenser mics into a mixer board and then pass the audio signal (via the “aux send” on the mixer) to my iPhone. I’m considering using a GoPro7 instead of my iPhone for video capture of my drums. Thank you. 🥁

I have a gopro 7. I do not like the camera and is a pos. I will just stick with my Panasonic G85 since better on all fronts from quality,design versatility.

I have a Gopro 4 is the adapter for the hero 7 different from the 4. I feel like it is it looks like usb-c 1......2. Do you really need two adapters for this to work? The mic really wont just plug into the bigger adapter with plugging into the smaller adapter 1st smh

I think the older GoPro didn't have the issue this one has and I think a lot of people use it because of this.

you'll notice the gopro USB adapter actually has its own USB C port for external power.

Can you use any usb-c to 3.5 mm adapter or does it have to be this GoPro one? I tried to do it with a non-GoPro mic adapter and it didn't work.

They made these to specifically only work with GoPro brand and makes it really hard to choose a cheaper alternative. I'm not sure if they have made another by now but last I checked it was only good to use the GoPro brand.

I was actually thinking of getting a hero 7 until I saw what you have to do to use an external mic. They should have just put a mic input on the camera

Nice video... GoPro is simply apalling... Just when I think about buying one I hear the horror stories about a stupid adapter at an outrageous price. Like so many companies, they screw their customers with prices for accessories.

Research the connecting type of plug in on your Yeti and then see if there is an "adapter" that will work for you. Not sure myself.

So I bought a $4 USB C to 3.5mm adapter at Walmart and it worked beautifully without the $50 adapter

Cool video but GoPro sucks for this, another way to squeeze more money out of customers. This unfortunately won’t work for my GoPro cage and holder . Might have to sell and get a newer GoPro
