What GoPro setting did you find the most interesting? Want me to dive deeper into a camera related subject? Also, I *DO* know of one gimbal that'll work with the hero 7, but I'm sure you can't guess what it is. I'll cover that in another video. ;)

Great and exceedingly helpful. Thanks again. RIP to the Hero 7 you used for the autopsy 😂. Question: what sound level do you bring your audio down to while editing/rendering? -3, -4??
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
If I'm using my pro gear? I record in -12, edit in -3. This video I edited in -6 and left out music because i didn't want people ears getting fatigued since the topic was all about sound quality.

Was going to say, my 7 and Karma work very well. Which is a huge leap, compared to my 5. Because I can hear the motors and button presses, whenever I used it. It was very annoying.

Excellent video! I was so bummed when I purchased a gimbal for my session 5 and found out the noise issue first hand. I do a lot of hiking and its dead quite so you hear everything! I ended up doing separate audio with a sony digital audio recorder and the mic you use in this video, but it was a pain to turn on and off both constantly and editing was no fun at all having to sync every clip.. I just bought a hero7 and am adding an external mic and this tutorial really helped me understand the characteristics of the hero7 audio both with and without a external mic. They need to design a gimbal with a built in microphone that is isolated from the motor vibration some how.. Thanks again!

Well thank you for this kind and understandeable explanation how it works and what kind of microphones does GoPro has. Few days ago I get GoPro 7 Black and I knew that on road (mine is hybrid, not electric) bike wind makes horrible noise, so I went in fabrics store and got 0,7 m square of some close to rurry looking fabric. Later I made a wind killer for my GoPro and actually it works very well. You can see it on my latest video I uploaded yesterday. Fabric price was about 4€

This is a very good video. I went and bought the audio adapter and mic as well. I mainly use my GoPro for metal concerts. But with the mics I have used the audio is terrible and unusable. Sounds like cracking and popping the whole time. Just using the onboard mics sound ok I guess. But once you explained raw audio; i set it to high. And it opened up a whole new world. A great in-depth review. It convinces me that the improvements are still not really that great for a motorcycle without an external microphone. My current hero 5 black is not up to scratch and I would not outlay the asking price for the hero 7 without monumental audio improvements and I am now convinced they are not there yet.

Trail Features I’ve got to imagine they are working on something for the Hero7 right? I mean this has been an issue since the Hero5 so they’ve had time to come up with a solution better than smash the audio to ignore gimbal noise like the Karma. I’m not saying it’s an easy problem, but it should be surmountable.

Great vid! For a Hero7 + gimbal solution, what about recording in stereo raw and only keeping the left audio channel (the one on top of the camera). If the camera doesn’t throttle the gain over to the right hand side mic for whatever reason, you should be able to dump the right side audio track and be left with a decent sounding mono track with little to no motor noise, no? I think I’m gonna have to go try this today 🤔
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
You can try that, but I'm pretty confident you're going to lose a lot of fidelity. You run the risk of the audio being pretty flat. There is a simple fix for this, and I've messaged EVO about it, so the ball is in their court now. 😉

@KrisYahner
@KrisYahner 5 лет назад
Thanks for this! Really great video with lots of good info. My experience with the hero 7 and a lav mic is that I and the trail noise sounded pretty good but the mic didn't pick up any of the conversation around me. Your mic seemed to do a better job of picking up conversation so I'd chalk my experience up to using a cheap lav mic. I'm still not sold on hyper smooth footage vs the gimbal so I think I'm going to be sticking to the evo SS and hero 4 setup for my main pov camera and try to use the hero 7 for other interesting but secondary shots.
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
A good mic is worth the money. It may have been a directional mic as well, so that could have been another cause. The hyper smooth is the best application of digital stabilization I've seen in a while, but it's still not up to par with a good gimbal setup.

my guess about protune quality is that the internal encoder profile is just tuned for file size rather than raw data, as protune would be for better post processing / colour grading. it does this by storing a higher bitrate stream. thoughts?
@MattiRemonen_Hki
@MattiRemonen_Hki 4 года назад
Old video but priceless. Just got my Gopro H7 as a second camera together with my H8 and waiting for the gimbal to arrive. This saved me a lot of wasted effort to tune the sound. Now I know that I won't be getting any good sound from the gimbal-attached H7. Instead I need to rely the H8 and probably external mic & raw audio.

Very interesting! I've been using the wind setting for audio. Its not great but I think I might try a windslayer and stereo. I'm not sure how its going to do in heat. I've noticed the Hero 7 Black gets hot even in the cooler months. Worst case, it overheats and I have to just take it off and have crappier audio haha.
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
You could always cut away some of the front section. You just need to make sure the mics are well covered. But for sure, stop using that wind mic!
@tristanm6392
@tristanm6392 3 года назад
I have a go pro 7 and windslayer. The windslayer makes a big difference and audio sounds pretty good in stereo mode. It does over heat on a hot day, not much you can do about it. But the trick I do is have the Slayer in a cooling pack with ice in a bag to keep the Slayer cool for a while before I use it and it helps keep the go pro at a good temperature. It works. I wouldn't recommend cutting sections off the front of the wind Slayer, doing that will just allow more wind noise to squeeze through. It's best left the way as it is as a complete sleeve.
@directionbangkok6167
@directionbangkok6167 4 года назад
You were recommending a windslayer (black foam cover) under protune stero only for the Hero 7 black, correct? I got a little confused if you were talking about the hero 4 or both at that point. Really nice video. After watching this I looked into how the "wind mic" works more and could not find much info. I take it when you use "stereo only" the wind mic is essentially getting turned off? Also really interesting how you can use stereo only, and if i understood correctly record raw sound to get information from all three mics as a form of backup when doing something perhaps more critical.

This is great! I really want to try out that sony mic and rode lav mic. I know you saw my purple panda one and I appreciate your tips regarding the raw audio. I'm excited to give that a shot and it should help me improve my audio further, but the ore I lsiten to the purple panda it just has this quality I'm not sure I am a fan of. Thus why I'd like to the try the others. However, I might just try the windslayer and raw audio with the internal and call it a day. I just need to get those mics first and see if those give me what I am looking for with the external audio quality.

I don't even own a hero 7, but found this intriguing. I have a couple questions as I am thinking of going that route. With the windslayer did you experience any overheating? I'm guessing not as it looked chilly, but summer in Texas has me concerned. In the past I've run a lav mic into my phone to avoid buying the GoPro adapter, and synced the audio later. Have you had any luck with that type of setup? Appreciate this video! Should help a bunch of people.
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
It's been way too cold to do any good heat tests. 🥶 The back screen isn't covered so hopefully that acts enough of a heatsink to cool the camera. I try to avoid syncing extra audio when I can, it becomes a pita for longer clips.
@CobraKyle
@CobraKyle 5 лет назад

Newbie RU-vidr here! Thank you for an excellent detailed review.👍🏾😁 I have shot a couple videos with my new hero 7 Black . And i was looking for the mic function and location info. So i have been using the wind setting and a windslayer. Useable but not good audio. Im also experimenting with the feiyutech wg2x. Unlike the Evo ss , the wg2x seems to be designed with the hero 5,6,7 model in mind. The evo ss was not designed with the newer gopro heroes in mind. So the Evo ss motor has to work extra hard and is, as you know noisey as heck. So evo created a "coin hack" counter balance that they sell to be placed on the side of one of the motors to balance the 5,6,7,👎🏽...i will see if i can schedule time to my review of the WG2X with the hero 7.. thanks again. - Sam

I do believe the problem is something simple, that’s why I got excited when I say your video, I thought ooh maybe it has something to do with the mic setting, or recording in raw. Well I was disappointed to find out neither was the problem. So if you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Derek

That could be a lot of things, very hard to troubleshoot without putting hands on it. It could be that vibrations are traveling up the cable to the lav mic. Some more affordable lav mics don’t have good vibration dampening built into the cable shield. That’s honestly the most I can think of. like I said really hard to troubleshoot that without seeing it in person.

do you mind sharing the best audio settings for when you are on a fast trail on your mountain bike? (including wind slayer) should i fiddle with low raw audio file?

Pretty much the same settings. After a certain point, it's impossible to block wind noise. I personally think it adds to immersion of the video. Jordan Boostmaster used an add-on mic on his hero that had a great wind cover on it, so when you heard the wind rushing by you KNEW he was hauling!

Alright from the kids table. I have the hero 7 black and I love the ease and setup as opposed to my old 4blk and EVO SS. I’ve never been concerned with audio quality but after watching this video it’s making me wonder.

When you use the windslayer, do you have the audio set to auto or stereo?
@TrailFeatures

I pretty much leave it in stereo all the time.

Trail Features Thanks! EVO SS just crapped out for the last time🤨 I’m going with the 7 Black for simplicity. Awesome video! Thanks for the advice😊

I put furniture pads on the case covering the mics, which works, as long as you don't knock the pads off.

Your thumbnail said "turn your Gopro audio level to 11", is there really such a setting? Thanks

Thanks for this tutorial. Nice. So, what if I was using the Hero 7 in the rain and I don't want to get popping sounds in the top mic would the rain sound be ok with only the front wind mic? Or is there a better way to do it as in some cover or foam or the like?
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
I would use the internal microphones with a foam wind slayer over the GoPro. This will give you good sound in the rain with minimal peaking due to raindrops hitting near the microphone.

@@TrailFeatures I see. My fear with the slayer was that with the slayer wrapped around the H7, it would get literally soaked like a sponge and definitely not pocketable.
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
It's the lesser of evils at that point. Anything that will keep wind noise down will soak up water. You could throw it in a ziplock bag if you want to keep the water from soaking a pocket.

@@TrailFeatures gotcha. ima try it with turning to the front (wind) mic only and see if that does it and if not and worse comes to worse, I'll just record via an outdoor mic and the zoom h6. thanks for the input.

Hi Joe, hope you are coping with this rather strange covid situation? My issue as a motorcycle blogger using Hero 7 and 8 Black, doing ground tests audio is excellent, so out on the Motorcycle hero 8, mic set up with dead cat inside my helmet, record and replay, as good as I need, go out again, record replay, ouch, were has that static noise come from, no changes to anything, so sometimes good then bad, help me please Joe it would be great to have audio that works every time? Thanks, stay safe, Derek

Is it real stereo recording? How is it possible if one microphone (right chanel?)is on the top? I have Gopro7 and stereo sound is strenge. Sound sources on the right is difficult to locate. What's yours expirience with stereo picture?
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 5 лет назад
You have a valid point, but it technically is stereo; just poorly implemented. To be honest, I've gone back to the Sony lav because the true stereo is so immersive with headphones.

I feel silly for asking this, but to me GoPro settings and the way they are labeled confuse me. I watched another video that seemed to suggest using the wind mode is best for combatting wind noise while riding a motorcycle. This video made me rethink what the settings actually meant. To reduce wind noise while recording on a motorcycle do I actually want to select Stereo mode in the GoPro audio settings???
@TrailFeatures
@TrailFeatures 4 года назад
The wind setting will indeed reduce wind noise. However, at a big sacrifice to overall audio quality. The best thing to do is use dead cats patches or foam to cover the microphones. This will let sound through, but greatly reduce the wind noise.

Hello, I'm hoping you can help me. I'm on my 2nd sound adapter I've received from GoPro - the 2nd one was a replacement. Basically, if I plug in my purple panda or the mic I use for my PS4 controller, there's no sound. I can hear myself with the sound adapter only plugged in, not a mic. I've messed with settings by changing raw audio from off to High and I've changed from standard mic to mic+ and also line in. I'm wondering if you think this might be a settings issue or if the sound should work by default. Because I'm thinking 1 of 4 things: the sound adapters do not work with GoPro 7, both the ones I've received are defective, there's a setting wrong, or I need a replacement GoPro 7 camera. I don't feel like there's a glaring setting that I'm missing, but most vids I see, it seems their cameras can work with audio, without them even tweaking the settings.

First thing I would do is make sure you have the correct microphone. TRS and TRRS look very similar, but TRRS will not work when plugged into a TRS style plug which is what the GoPro adapter uses. monopricesupport.kayako.com/article/102-what-is-the-difference-between-ts-trs-and-trrs
