The horizon leveling is quite spectacular. I think the changing horizon when on the remote control car added some character to the video though.

Wow amazing, I haven't actually figured out how to turn on horizon mode; do you find the Hero 9 gets very hot? I noticed it was very warm when testing it yesterday.

Um when I watched the clips I noticed that people walking disappeared faster on the Hero 9 than the Hero 8 and I thought that the GoPro Hero 9 was supposed to have a wider field of view. Do you know why?

I watched a lot of comparison videos as I'm about to buy a GoPro for the first time. I replayed and paused a lot during these videos and studied the shots in detail. My personal observations are that the Hero 8 and 9 during daytime video are very similar but you can surely tell a difference when moving quickly. As an example, the grass was more defined on the 9 as you moved and I believe this is due to the quicker focus ability of the 9. Also, buildings in the background were crisper and more defined with the 9 but if you already own the 8, it might not be a big enough difference to upgrade at the moment. As far as night shots are concerned, the 8 does have the slightly brighter picture but the 9 has slightly more definition. When looking at buildings at night, the 9 does provide a clearer image but it's a very small difference compared to the 8 and the 8 is slightly brighter. I'm torn on this because obviously the brighter 8 would be more desirable if shooting a night video of something important to you. However, the ability to make out distant features on buildings or structures on the 9, does have some appeal. I think the majority of people shoot during daylight hours so the 9 wins in my opinion for those shots. The ability for it to focus faster and provide crisp clean video at fast speeds as well as it's slightly better colors is just hands down a great upgrade from the 8. Again though, if you already own the 8, it might not seem appealing to you to upgrade for just a little better picture quality when the 8 still looks amazing. If your one of the few that needs to shoot at night, then it's a hard decision as I'm one of those people and I don't know which way to go. I think in the end I'm gonna buy the 9 because it's better overall, even if the night pics are just a bit darker. I don't feel it's dark enough to not warrant the purchase. Certainly not as dark as some other cheaper action cams.

Great review, as always! I have watched a lot of comparisons between the 8 and the 9 and my impression is that the 9 has a little more stuttering/jerkiness when panning (like it looses some frames). I think I can see it here also, when the car turns I think that the Hero 8 handle it just a touch smoother if you look at the tree line. Maybe I´am wrong...

great video comparison! I actually prefer not to have the horizon leveled all the time as this detracts from the action, which these cameras are designed to capture. For example, when filming on the buggy at the football field, the 9 created an impression that it is mounted on a lawn mower, whereas the 8 added that feeling of speed and action by not leveling the horizon. Great to see Niagara Falls (Canadian side) in the night video comparison :)

the best natural looking stabilization was implemented in Sony fdr x3000. Although only for handheld filming, because it doesn't eliminate high frequency vibrations.

Hi is horizon levelling available for owners of the 8 by way of a firmware update?

I hate to admit it but I still have the Go Pro 3+ (not used in years) and wanted to get back using a Go Pro mainly for my cycling rides, not for vlogs. would you recommend going with the 8 black as the price has come down and seems plenty adequate for my needs?

The 9 will be a massive step up for me from my hero 6 black and hero 7 black

Both the GoPro Hero 8 Black & Hero 9 Black was comparable with stabilization, but I like the image of Hero 9 Black being sharper, more vibrant colours & faster focusing. All other features the Hero 9 Black was far ahead, I still own the GoPro Hero 6 Black so I'm due for an upgrade & the Hero 9 Black would be a massive improvement for a replacement....

Is it true that if you shake and turn the camera upside down very fast the video stays the same and it's not moving ?

I really like the horizon leveling but not enough to upgrade from a Hero 8. The 9 also looks to have deeper blacks at night.

The horizon lock is pretty darn nice though. But I think I can hold out, again, we’ll see what kinds of lenses come out.

Honestly think the 8 looks better. I am 1/2 through the video, and wanted to say the one difference I do see is at appears the 9 maybe has just a touch more dynamic range resulting in very slight advantage of image quality, however, not sure it's enough for me to make the jump to a 9 unless I got one for a extremely crazy deal!

Hi bro Facing issue with GoPro 8 black..many times voice is not getting recorded in videos..just all sounds vipes out..this problem happens when I use it with mic adapter and external mic.. otherwise no such issue.. checked mic and mic adapter with GoPro 7 and 6..it was fine..means hero 8 is the issue..how to fix pls suggest

Can you please help me with my GoPro 9 Black. I am filming a lot of car racing videos where GoPro cam steady hold on the car and filming only one direction. The problems is that i have those movements in the video evertime driver turns left or right even as i said camera is on the cars roof recording onlyubone direction. 8:28 looks like hero 8 has wider FOV less oversharpening (more real clear image) so it has better dynamic range. Have I got something wrong?

Not much difference, My Hero 8 is still good. Not compelling enough to upgrade.

In low light conditions the hero 9 stabilization seems slitley better then the 8 from what i see

Is go pro 9 so smooth video without gimbale?

Around 5:10 I noticed the trees appeared sharper in contrast in 9 compared to 8. Were their settings equal?? Horizon leveling not much use as many of us do not shoot in that extreme. Even we did, we would want people to know it, but Hero 9 would kill that evidence. 😆

I must admit till this day my DJI Osmo Plus with it's Z axis arm eliminates the bouncing effect in walking stabilization. You don't need to learn the ninja walk.

Main thing we have seen so far is that the 9 footage is blurry compared to the 8 are you finding that? We are needing another Gopro but we think maybe another 8 is the go.

Interesting. Anyone else noticed that the pure video quality is much better on the 9 than the 8? Look at the grass. 9 is much sharper! And look at the trees around the soccer field. Much more contrast and "3D"like picture.

I did see a tad bit better stabilization in the 9 but if you aren't trying to look you won't find any difference

My go pro is disaster after frame update.... Stabilisation doesn't work while walking slow.
