This was a huge help for me, I'm brand new to GoPro having just purchased my Hero 9 Black this morning at the airport on the way to Cairns. I'm also new to diving and have just completed my Adv Open Water, so I'm excited to get started with underwater photography. Lots to learn, so keep the info coming. Thanks again.
Top Tip: be careful when climbing into the boat with your GoPro. I had a lanyard around my wrist, which caught on the ladder and snapped as I heaved myself up onto the dive boat, sending my new GoPro straight to the bottom. Luckily for me there were some very experienced divers with us (Jimmy who has about 15000 dives and has spent over a year of his life under water) and he was able to dive down with low air and find it in about 20m of water. Phew! (and before anyone says I should use a floating selfie stick the one that came with the GoPro is telescoping so I can stick my camera right into a shark or morays face without getting my arm bitten off and it doesn't float. Hence the lanyard) The best practice here is to tuck your GoPro into your dive suit against your chest BEFORE you climb out the water. Live and learn.
Thank you so much. I'm going diving for the first time in years next week, and just got the 9 (my 3 froze up finally). This is exactly what I need to make sure I've got my 9 setup correctly.
You might need a housing for surfing even if its on the surface. Sometimes hard hits against the water can replicate high water pressures from being deeper than 33 feet.
Mate this was so helpful, I’ve searched for exactly this content but yours never came up til now. Best of the lot! Simple, straightforward and covers 99% of what we ‘normal’ people (I.e. non professional) are looking for. Subscribed! Keep it up. BTW I’m diving Gold Coast in a couple months if you have any can’t-miss sites to recommend there. ✌️🤙
Stoked to hear it helped you out! Can’t say I’ve dived on the Goldie - but if you can get further south to Julian Rocks in Byron Bay that’s always a winner! 🤙
Been having some issues sorting this as it seem to be something a few people have mentioned, yet on my headphones it’s pretty same same across the board 🤣 I’ll make sure it’s sorted asap!
That handle looked familiar. I clicked on your link and found I bought one back in 2017, I agree, it is simple and works well. I am adding the filters now and will see how I do in a couple weeks.
stoked to hear its serving you well too! the filters will make a massive difference, makes everything much more vibrant straight out of the camera without any colour grading :)
For night dive the best advice I can give is get a good set of lights to go with it and bump the max ISO up a bit. Deep dive again lightning is key so a slightly increased ISO will help, but make sure it’s max 40m due to the housing restrictions. Cage diving - I’d still go with the extendable pole but keep it shorter, if you’re less than 7m deep you also won’t need the red filter 🤙
great tips - Upgraded to a 12, but still need a housing as I go deeper. The one issue I have now is when I hit record, I don't know if it is in video or photo mode - even though I "lock" it. It is either on my head or on my chest, so I cannot see the back display - what tricks do you have to know if it is "on" and which mode it is in?
Hey Christopher, stoked the video helped you out! I edit in Final Cut X, but the GoPro app is now pretty good for quick mini edits and free software like iMovie has enough function to get you started 😊 Photo wise I’m using Lightroom 🤙
Glad it helped Antonio! Basically I cap it at 400 as if you push ISO too much the footage can become grainy. If you're diving in less clear conditions though you can up that to 600 or 800, or even leave on auto if you're unsure
Hi great video very informative. I'm headed over the next year to do some bucket list diving, Dominica, red sea liveaboard wreck diving, then Cuba Liveaboard. Compared to the lower end PaS underwater cameras and video eq. from 15 years ago when I started diving this is incredible performance for the price and compact. What eq. , lighting and mounting do you recommend for night or low vis overcast days. Looking to stay compact and I realize that the light could cost more than the goPor
Hey Charlie - glad the video helped you out! Lighting wise the skies the limit,, but there are some pretty good value strobed and arms out there you can add on. You're right though, they can quickly become more pricey than the camera itself! I've also used a more budget setup using dive torch mounts, which might be worth looking into as well. Let me know what you end up going with!
just using it on rather than high (which crops slightly more). Good slow breathing and double hand on the grip helps the stability even more...practice makes perfect!
hmmmm that's bizzare! I'll see if I can ammend that. In the meantime though check out this post for all my mounts and filters etc: www.stokedfortravel.com/best-gopro-accessories/
@@MaCoop3r the dive conditions and lighting will have a ig effect on it - we had pretty good vis, lots of sunlight and the bts clips were certainly in shallower waters too, which helps a lot with the colours
Great video, the video settings helped a lot. Would you say the red filter is enough for 10-20m dives. Or is it useful to combine the handle with a flash light? Is a flashlight and red filter useful together or not ?
Stoked it helped you out Thomas! Light wise it really depends on where you’re diving and how dark it is. Generally speaking though if you’re using a light with your setup, you won’t need the filter, as if reintroduces the full light spectrum to your shots again.
Hi mate, thanks for the very instructive video. Could you give me some ISO video setting tips for the gopro 11? that would be for dephts of around 5 to 12 metres in the Keppel Islands in Queensland (where the water can be a bit murky compared to the outer reefs obviously lol) Also, filter or no filter since the gopro 11 have this automatic white balance settings that allows to crank up the reds anyway?
Stoked you like the video and it’s helped you out! For murkier water I would still keep the ISO auto, but push the max a bit higher for the extra light. I’d still go with the filter too as the white balance still won’t replace the reds and having it will make editing heaps easier 🤙
Personally I wouldn’t recommend a chesty as it’ll interfere with your BCD and you won’t have much control over what you film. The extension pole (or small grip) is a much better and safer option 🤙
Hi great explanation ❤ but how do i set for a nightdive? And do the settings change with a red filter? Nightdive,no need of filter? Please help, its my first gopro9 and i am all confused and lost good videos yesterday with the wrong settings and i dont lime working on them so much postdive😊
Glad it helped! With the filter I still use the same settings. For night dive you don’t need the red filter as you’re adding in a fresh light source, so the colours aren’t lost at depth 😊
glad you like the soundtrack Andres. It's called "To Get To You" by Mikey Geiger, you can grad it via Soundstripe: www.soundstripe.com/?fpr=stokedfortravel
Personally I prefer the single handle rig as it’s easier to dive with and store when not using underwater. Personal preference though - but the two handle rigs are usually for bigger cameras or ones with strobe lights 😊
Hey Chris, thx for your Video. A question from Germany - when i use a filter for scuba diving, is it also importend to make the ProTune settings - EV, ISO Colour? Thank you. Regards Bobby
Hey Bobby, glad you liked the video! I would still tweak the ProTune even witha filter and adjust slightly depending on the conditions you're diving in.
Can you still add a red filter in post-production? At the moment, GoPro is selling the Hero 9 and 10 for the same price. Would you say it's worth the upgrade? I heard about freezing for ages, taking a long time to process photos and draining the battery (for both models) and for that pricetag, it would be quite annoying. Cheers
Hey Lu, so you can add back in some red with colour grading - however the red filter is a much easier option and creates a better base for editing, so I would use it where you can. In terms of 9 v 10 if they’re the same price I’d go 10 for the extra resolutions and frame rates. Can’t say I’ve experienced any major issues with mine
Hey Ken, good piece of advice. I should've made it more clear - I dont use full blown carabiner clips - just those cheap little metal ones as a back up
