MicBergsma how about movement in the lowlight recording. I have noticed a lot of noise and blur when I try recording in low light settings. Please show some examples on getting the best stable video in low light!!! Thanks man!

So basically don’t go above iso 800 max in low light unless you’re filming stars in the night sky.

@@FlorianLardet i feel like low light 800 is more true color but you get video slight more darker but thats normal since it night? but 1600 you can see noise and true night is gone. but thats just my assumption. since its dark and night might as well hit the true dark colors with low light? which is 800?

but for 3:26 1600 iso is better since you can see all players nice and clear, thats what you want so it just depends, like a sunset i would def capture true colors in 800, it makes more sense. but football field in 1600 for sure, since i want all players visible and clear.

@@sabugdalantx That's no use if you step into somewhere indoors. The min setting is there so the camera is allowed to adjust to it wen needed. Indoors you can get away with the lowest ISO levels.

I don't know why. I have shot all the time with Protune OFF. No ND filters or Polarisers. I was over exposed only few times. I kind ah found peace with auto settings of GOPRO. Nice & Thanks for this video :)

after test two weeks,here is the setting which i think is perfect for low night iso：100-800 sharpless:low ev:0 clolor:gopro wb:auto shutter:auto bit rate:high but you still get shake some time,if you want perfect no shake ,you still need a gimbal.

I have been looking for over an hour for an Ideal elaboration of how ISO setting Min/Max could effect the shooting in different status of the day like cloudy, sunny and so on in addition to low light conditions at night. Thanks man! My low light footage was driving me crazy with the amount of noise xD The gopro does handle Iso noise pretty badly however, my Canon has useable video with iso at 12800 XD

Mic. The basics of photography and video still apply. They have a so called triangle consisting of ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. You can't change the aperture of a GoPro, but you can change the ISO and shutter speed. To get better visual in low low use a slower FPS such as 24, and set the shutter speed to 1/48, which follows the 180 degree rule. If you aren't videoing things that move very much you could try the shutter at speed at 1/24 a second.

Wow holy shit what a great video! that's exactly how I imagine comparisons, clean and cool! So far, I have filmed a lot indoors and had to notice a lot of noise/screen interferences in my GoPro from about 200 ISO upwards. A comparison inside would be awesome. But thumbs up and respect for your effort!

A lot of people don’t understand this setting. By using ISO 100 min and say 3200 max the GoPro will never use an ISO lower than 100 or higher than 3200. So if your scene requires ISO 1200 it will get there and stop. If you set your min and max to 3200 your GoPro will only use 3200 even if the scene requires 1200. ALWAYS use 100 min and if you want so go above 800 or 1200 on max.

There is no such thing as "always" (unless you're in a controlled studio) because conditions vary, except that there are always exceptions. Maybe rule of thumb would be better?

ISO performance on GoPros is weird. I remember cranking the ISO to whatever the max was on my Hero 5, putting the colour on flat, and setting it to 4K. It wasn't stabilized, but it actually looked like a flat profile - ton of banding noise but I didn't mind the look. I did the same thing but stabilized with my Hero 7, and it just looked horrible, didn't look flat at all, just looked like a camera from 2007. It makes sense for them to optimise for better stabilization and resolutions instead of low light, but it's so drastically different on 7 from the 5, it makes me wonder what they changed to get that.

I just filmed a cockpit flight last night and thought that the hero 7 I was using was just bad at low light. Very grainy and unwatchable. I did have an ND filter on which probably didn't help anything so next time I'll take if off once it gets dark enough, but I watched your video and realized the max iso was set 3200! I set it to 400 and ill try it again the next time I fly. Thanks a lot for this!

My father was filming his hike in 4k30fps 100/800 in the open woods it was fine quality except the sky was bright and couldnt see any details in the sky, was just a bright light. When he got out from woods everything was just bright and it was hard to see anything.. the floor and sky was just bright light and stabiliser was not working at all, was shaking all over the place. I just did a update and changed settings, so lets see how it goes

The thing is that even if iso 1600 loses quality, sometimes it’s impossible to get any usable footage on a lower one. Between less than ideal footage and no footage at all, I pick the second. I use two presets. The General one is locked after 50 FPS with Max iso of 1600 and low light on. Ll won’t work without 1600. This is kinda the jack of all trades. The second one is max iso 3200, at 25 FPS, with stabilization on. This is for getting very dark shots that the GoPro was never designed for. But yeah, for image quality, I’d stick to 800 max.

Interesting to see the image quality at low and high ISO, but there could be a misunderstanding for some viewers here. at 4:33 for example, ISO 400 to 6400 look all the same... because the camera stopped the ISO at 400, automatically setting what it considers to be a correct exposure. It doesn't matter then if you put max 800, 1600, etc (unless light conditions change of course). Thanks for the test !

Great video. But I still have one question. Lets say that my ISO is min 100 and 400 max. Does the gopro change the iso during recording for adjusting the exposure? I am walking in the woods with very clear zones and dark shadows. If it starts recording at 100 iso does it change or it just regulate the exposure by changing the shutter speed? Thanks!
