Oooooh people might hate on me for this... and please note I could VERY EASILY be wrong, but I think I know why he tumbled. I think his nerves got to him. He was still trying to accelerate as he got to the edge of the take-off ramp. He was supposed to let go of the accelerator when he got onto the ramp but because he got nervous and continued to hold it down, he got a tiny bit of thrust from his rear tires while his front tires were weightless. This resulted in a tiny forward roll, that over 100 meters, places his vehicle at nearly a vertical landing. So the car was ready, the track was ready, and the driver was not ready.
Video of the Day! The Longest Jump. This is more than a story about a world record car jump attempt. It’s a record of one man confronting his own mortality, and ultimately experiencing a moment we can only describe as grace. With Guerlain Chicherit, 4-time freeskiing world champion, French-rally winner and Dakar Rally veteran.
Wow... First of all, I'm glad he's ok. Secondly, that was incredibly well filmed, it's not often you just sit there and watch with you mouth wide open for several seconds like I did.
His training and experience are brilliantly showcased in this video. The ability to acknowledge the reality of the situation and remain calm in order to keep the body relaxed to avoid further injury.
"We captured 'that moment' - A look on a man's face and a light in his eyes when he realizes, 'this is it. I am going to die'. Three or four seconds that seem like minutes, without time. Where I expected to see fear, panic, contortion, and pain, Guerlain shows us a deep existential calm." " lol this is so overplayed, the only look on his face is one of wide eyed shock/anticipation when he realises he's going to crash. and then a scrunched up cringe as he rolls.
Worst rescue team ever! How slow could you be? If it caught on fire he would have burned in there while the rescue team is a mile away trying to run to him in snow.
I hope you realize that the video at points are slowed down... Also I feel sorry for your parents for having such a dumb child. If you really think they ran a mile then you need to get your eyes checked.
Yeah as an EMT I feel like the response was a little slow. I would have at least had someone on an ATV with a jump-kit and a fire extinguisher or something.
One of the problem with the rescue team was where they positioned them selves. Car is doing 160km/h and they were waiting at the landing point..... ??Should have been at least 200m down the road..
In 2014, no arm restraints, no Hans Device, no full face helmet, no Butler seat...and by the skill of the chassis builder and 5 point shoulder harnesses...he is still alive
***** This crash was very survivable from a vehicle standpoint with the strong roll-cage, but the lack of key saftey items is concerning. No window net, eye protection, or HANS device just from what I can see.
"The life of a professional stunt athlete is rarely without consequences," James explains. "We see them fall, crash, get hurt and, yes, sometimes they die. But what we captured inside of Guerlain's car was very different than a crash video -- it was a deeply ethereal, intimate human experience. We captured 'that moment' - A look on a man's face and a light in his eyes when he realizes, 'this is it. I am going to die'. Three or four seconds that seem like minutes, without time. Where I expected to see fear, panic, contortion, and pain, Guerlain shows us a deep existential calm." truly felt it amazing video!!
There should be a warning at the beginning of this. It was kinda disturbing, especially for people like me that saw all the awful things that happened to Evel Knievel.
This video has been selected by the channel as one of the Most Amazing Sport videos on RU-vid and was added to the channel's playlist accordingly. Thanks for sharing.
DAMN!! With a crazy ass roll like that, walking away from it just goes to show how well built for safety these race cars are. That's not easy to walk away from, then want to try and do it again, Respect!
Dá uma moral para o cara, ele não bateu o recorde de salto mais longo com sucesso, mas bateu o recorde de acidente mais caralhamente lindo de se ver já gravado parabéns! 👏🏻
People call daredevils like this stupid, careless, and insane. But for them, it's their dream. It's their dream to jump the longest jump, fall the longest free-fall, drive the fastest speed, or whatever! They're getting called stupid and careless for going after their dream. In reality, the real stupid and careless people are the ones that DON'T go after their dreams. Because that's called wasting life.
Anyone who risks their life trying to fulfill their dreams should then at least be responsible enough not to build a family that they'll eventually devastate.
@@_Gandalf_The_White Yeah, tell that to his wife and children when they have to bury him because he thought it was better to do a stunt than be there for them, like a husband and a father has to.
Whatever obstacle comes your way, you gotta be prepared to jump over it! And I think that's what separates the legends from the regular artists. It's all in how you manage that success, and how you deal with the controversy when it actually comes.
for those of you like me who had experience rollovers before, you'll understand the feeling that is guy is experiencing. Each minutes felt like seconds and your natural instinct kicks and making every movement like slow motion. It also feels like a very realistic dream when it's "happening".
Didn't expect the crash; I was holding my breath as he tumbled through the air. Glad to know he's O-k and that he has a caring and loving group surrounding him. Especially his wife
What a shitty way to promote cameras. You have all these shots but fail to supply a continuous bystander shot of the car as it hits and rolls. Instead we get these short choppy clips ffs.
Exactly what I was thinking.. I want to see a continuous shot from the top and side angle ....Maybe he didn't even roll it... they just dub'd in another rocket rolling :-) or these Cameras aren't good enough :-)
His eyes just before the impact... that raw fear within them, time slows down, was his mind blank or were millions of thoughts and images flashing before his eyes(?)... and then, while tumbling, he had an almost "damn it, this is quite annoying" expression on his face! But before all that, before you could see that the nose of the car was dipping just a little too low past the apex of the jump, it was a moment of total serenity! Glad he made it through without any serious injuries, hopefully his mind will be able to cope with this experience just as well! Good luck to him in the future!
OK, so that was emotional just sitting on my sofa watching it. Balls.of.steel. And there is me worried about going over my bars on my fixie. Video of the year.
Wow. That was the most fantastic car crash I've ever seen. Not in the fantastic good meaning, but in a dramatic almost theatrical way. I really thought he would make it. Boy was I wrong
***** Nearly everybody ,including the firemen asked for one while they all were going to the car. I'm french,i understand what they say, they speak french. Those dumbos car builders didn't even used an inertial/impact emergency switch to shut off the fuel pump.... It's not aerodynamic i think, you can see the car to dive because of the front end weight. it's very progressive and starts when the wheels speed decrease. you can hear the engine slow down. I thought about a wing wich could be used to balance the car,but it should be used only once in the air when the car start to dive;or just before to prevent it. it would make the car to loose a bit of speed because of the drag but at least it would land flat.
michaelovitch They were under stress and misunderstood. Actually they had extinguisher in the place as you can see in 9:22 on the left. And its true that he could have saved it if he didnt lift throttle.
i cant believe he survived a jump like that, i mean. you expect someone as confident as him to have gotten the jump for sure. but the term "pushing the limits" is a perfect example for someone as good as a person as he is. he is terribly lucky to have lived through a 100 meter jump in a mini-freakin-cooper... i give him my 100% utmost of respect. him and his family already have plenty of stories to tell for the rest of their lives. what an inspiration.
I'm very familiar with the things going through this gentleman's head, I've performed several jumps on motorcycles but nothing of this magnitude. I'm too damn old to be doing it now but I still enjoy watching others do it. All precautions have been taken here and the crews are well trained for any emergencies that may arise. I wish him the best in all his endeavors and congratulations on the new arrival.
Would have been fine if he stayed on the accelerator the whole way through. The car really started to pitch forward once the engine was slowing down, and the wheels were losing rotational velocity. The momentum of the wheels was then transferred to the car, because, you know, law of conservation of (insert force here). Same thing would have happened, albeit more severely, had he hit the brakes. Motocross riders change bike pitch by opening the throttle and using the foot brake in mid air all the time. All in all, a fantastic attempt, and going long is better than falling short and smashing into the ramp, which looked like solid ice/concrete.
+Donald Baker actually rally professionals also take the fail into the account. they know what happens in case of an accident. The cars are build to withstand accidents not like a normal civil car. and helmet and so on. in a normal car he would have been of course dead. + no obstacles that he could have hit in the region of the accident. all well planned.....
DeepBlueSpirit In the freestyle motocross, they need the throttle for the Backflip, to hold it and to adjust the speed. The Rc cars can controlled in air with the throttle. What he sayed has some true
8o8inSquares Well for those that want to watch the full thing, feel free to do so. But if you wated to watch what you came for, the jump, then use the time above.
Wow that was intense! Omg.. he just walks out of that... jeezzz Wish you the best. I thumbed up... don't know why some one would thumbed down after all this efforts and risk.
That was...whoa. So glad he was okay. I love racing & stuff like this but when it starts to go wrong it stops being entertainment to me & all I care about is the person & their families at that moment. That had to be absolutely terrifying for them, no matter how long he's been doing this. Someone was lookin out for him on this day big time.
It was really interesting to see hes reaction when he realized that hes gonna crash. You can almost see him seeing his whole life that had passed before hes eyes '-'
i´d never seen or heard of a video where you really see "the moment" in the face of a human thinking: ok that´s it... in this moment, there is no time, not a single word that can describe the feeling you have when you just appreciate your death had a accident with this feeling for myself and the video shivered me down in memory
We all think we will live a long life, and nothing's ever happen to us. We just do it and it happens. But in the face of our ultimate challenge, thoe one we all live for, we realize how small, fragile, and insignificant we are. Enough to see and understand that a single, mere piece of cloth and a bunch of metal tubes just saved our life from death. This man will never be the same again.
The numpty pressed the brakes in the air, this transferred the wheels rotational momentum into the chassis, causing the car to rotate forward (and the inevitable crash). You can hear the engine revs drop very quickly (the car was still in gear) as he presses the brakes.
