In this video we put the Gopro Hero 8 up against he Hero 9 in night mode astrophotography. We will explore the hot pixel issues with the Gopro and see which one is better. We also do editing with Adobe lightroom for these astrophotography images.

The gopro 8 has a major problem with hot pixels. The gopro 7 and earlier doesn't have the hot pixel problem, but every night lapse that I watch from the 8 all has the same problem. I was going to get the 8, but when I learned about the hot pixels I decided to spend the extra money and get the 9. Haven't quite got it yet, but im exited to start shooting some night photos as well as some snowboarding stuff. Thanks for the helpful video!

When considering the problem of signal versus noise in an image, hot pixels are clearly in the noise category. It's just a matter of how you think about what is and isn't noise. Typically in astrophotography, to eliminate hot pixels you take darks and subtract them in post-processing.

Interesting stuff you were saying and GoPro 8 and 9 can do astrophotography and even hero 7. Smartphones has small censors and yet can take fantastic looking shots of milky way. Censor size doesn't really matter if good or not. I've got the Canon 700D dslr and I can get professional looking shots and it's an entry level camera. I miss my old single lens reflex camera with film and that was before dslrs came about and that slr took way better astrophotos than then the latest high end dslrs of today. Camera I can't remember the name cost cheaply and these shots were stunning. Dslrs nowadays rely on software to make them better. Without software they are average. You wouldn't say professional ground based telescope would be out performed by a small telescope and yet a small telescope is out performing professional telescopes and that small telescope is the Hubble space telescope 2.4 metre mirror which is small. No ground based large professional telescope has ever took shots like Hubble. Hubble proves one thing right size doesn't matter. Hubble is in the best place above the murky atmosphere. In future generations of GoPro it will improve to the point of high end dslrs! Smartphones at first wasn't good and now your showing these smartphones can do fantastic astrophotography. I hope the guys at GoPro are watching your videos like this one. Then they think this could be awesome for Gopro! GoPro hero 10 you never know could be as good as Samsung s21u! GoPro I think in future will take astrophotography seriously when more people like you show how great it can be at astrophotography! Hey you stay safe!

Why will the hot pixels get worse over time? You said that you didn't get any hot pixels with the GoPro 9 but you might get more over time. Is taking night photos hard on the sensor? Thanks
@ShayneMostyn

Gday mate, no not really for regular photos. More for the night photos. It pushes the sensor quite hard doing long exposures at high ISO.
@clmfilms8103
@clmfilms8103 3 года назад
@@ShayneMostyn so is taking photos at night in other words bad for the sensor? I have seen lots of nightlapses with older gopros and the gopro 9 and I have never seen any hot pixels, only with the gopro 8. I guess night lapses would also be harder on the sensor than just taking some photos because a night lapse just consists of a ton of photos....Hopefully no hot pixels develop with my gopro 9 when I get it.

You're clearly quite good at this. I just tried my first attempt to get the Milky Way with my Hero 9, but even with a 30s exposure and an ISO of 800, the pictures were pretty dark - brightening them up resulted in a lot of grain. Should I increase the ISO to get enough light to counteract this? I had low light pollution, but your initial photos are much brighter than mine.
@ShayneMostyn
@ShayneMostyn 3 года назад
Thanks! Are all of your settings like mine were? You can try going higher iso just make sure the GoPro isn’t sharpening too much. You can bring out a fair bit of light in an edit as well, even with snapseed.
@T4nkcommander
@T4nkcommander 3 года назад
@@ShayneMostyn Yes, and I did edit in post - that's when the grain became apparent. If I brightened as much as I wanted the noise was unacceptable. A tolerable noise level resulted in a darker image than desired. Given the unedited RAWs were very dark I'm almost certain 800 was too low in my case. Need to experiment more I guess!
@T4nkcommander
@T4nkcommander 3 года назад
@@ShayneMostyn It looks like GoPro chose 350-290 for all of my shots, since I had Min ISO at 100. This was fine for sunset, but made all the Milky Way shots way underexposed. So I guess next time shoot MIN 800 and MAX 800? Thanks!
