PLEASE READ: if I were to type a description of this video, it would be very long and drawn-out, so please feel free to ask me any questions about my job and my responsibilities and I will answer them. Thanks!
NOTE: While I am an avid planespotter myself and love photographing and video-recording airplanes, I hope this video goes to show how hard us ground crews work to keep these aircraft flying. If I may add, it was -7°F ( approx. -21°C ) on this particular day with a windchill of -16°F ( approx -26°C ). While I was properly equipped with the appropriate clothing, facemasks, goggles, gloves, and boots, after a while the body begins to sweat and that sweat begins to freeze onto your skin. It's also not very easy to be doing a dangerous job in the extreme cold with new guys who are not used to the elements consistently complaining about it. You can't just tell them to go home, you need the help to maintain the plane on schedule and turn it around on time. I hope you all understand how fun, but how stressful, this awesome job can be.
As many of you know, I'm an employee at Chicago's O'Hare International / Int'l Airport ( ICAO = KORD / IATA = ORD ). I bought a GoPro HD Hero 3 White Edition camera on sale during my lu nch break on "Black Friday," the crazy sales event after Thanksgiving Day, and decided to wear it during my job offloading and loading cargo planes at the Southeast Air Cargo Ramp at O'Hare.
Here, the video starts with me marshaling in Singapore Airlines Cargo aircraft 9V-SFM, a Boeing 747-412/SCD ( cn 32898 / 1333 ) arriving as Singapore Airlines Cargo 7969 Heavy ( SIA7969 / SQC7969 / Singapore Airlines Cargo Flight 7969 / Singapore International Airlines Flight 7969 ) from Dallas - Fort Worth / Ft. Worth International / Int'l Airport ( KDFW / DFW ) in Texas by way of Hong Kong - Chep Lap Kok International / Int'l Airport in Southeast Asia with a fuel stop at Anchorage - Ted Stevens International / Int'l Airport ( PANC / ANC ). I was standing atop a JBT AeroTech Commander 30 aircraft cargo loader, or as some people call it, an elevator or bridge.
I stopped recording after offloading the rear belly of the aircraft because the front belly door wouldn't open. It was frozen shut from the extreme cold the aircraft had experienced during the flight from DFW to ORD! You can see me trying to get it open, but I gave up after several attempts because I could damage the locking mechanism and that would be very bad and potentially catastrophic to the structural integrity and pressurized interior of the aircraft during flight.

@49kittypretty1 😆😆😆 This is one of my favorite comments now, thank you. I try VERY hard to be as grammatically correct as possible, I always have. I attended a college that was very strict and focused on writing, and despite giving my best efforts, I still received complaints from my professors. Nowadays, I type up reports at work daily, and I often get what I've been hearing all my life, having grown up in a lower-income neighborhood and attended public school: "Why do you talk all educated? Why do you sound so white when you talk?" (I'm of Mexican descent) Whatever, my management team loves my reports as do the corporate folks in Europe and all the airlines we deal with. We had a small aircraft damage incident at work a few weeks back, and I asked the involved individuals to write up a small summary of what they saw happen, or what they did prior to and before the incident so that we can try to determine what happened and how to correct it. One of the sheets I got back only said, "I aint seen nuthin" 😆 I mean, I wasn't asking for or expecting much, but I got nothing at all. Unsurprisingly, the employee that wrote that was responsible for the damage, as we already knew, after checking the security cameras. I wish more people realized that writing correctly helps - A LOT.

I do like how you used the small baggage ramp instead of the huge one to open the cargo doors. I’ve seen a lot of planes just use a big ramp. They are pretty much wasting fuel... But you did it the good way. Nice job unloading this 747! Edit: On smaller planes they use small ramps due to cargo door size.

It's a lot more maneuverable in the tight gate area and also, the high loaders are needed to start offloading ULDs asap, can't really be wasting time, haha

Very Interesting Indeed. Always blows my mind why ground crew are so poorly paid and underappreciated. Without ground crew everything would grind to a halt. From marshaling, offloading, loading, GPU, ASU, HVAC, pushback, jetbridge (for pax aircraft), you all rock.

Absolutely awesome. Other than being a commercial pilot this is literally my ideal job. I'm studying aviation at University in the UK at the moment and would FAR prefer to be doing this at Heathrow or Gatwick. This perspective shows just how personal, so to speak, you get with the aircraft and I can only imagine how sweet it must be to marshal in that 747. This may sound weird but this video has inspired me to apply for an airside job like this one this summer. Great video!
@SunSkipper360
@SunSkipper360 10 лет назад
And I can totally see what you mean about it being stressful. But I bet that's what makes the job so good in a way.
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 10 лет назад
First time I marshaled in a 747...it was one of the most incredible moments of my life. I've since done it with MD-11's, 777's, and 737's. You are correct that we do get very personal, in a way, with the aircraft when they are ours on the ground. It's the most satisfying feeling watching them take off once we're done with them. This job is not for everyone, it takes a certain kind of insane mentality to deal with the weather, schedules, and physical aspects, but I do recommend it to everyone who wants to try it out or who wants an aviation career. It's a great place to start off at the airport and get your feet wet. I myself am starting flight school soon, and I wish you the best in your endeavours. Cheers, and thanks for taking some time to watch this video!

@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 10 лет назад
Thank you! Yes, I agree. Not too much (or not enough!) footage from this perspective exists. And you're right, I did hold the X longer than usual. On a 747 or similar large aircraft, our rules were to wait until the engines are off as well as the red rotating beacon before setting the main gear wheel chocks. The nose gear chocks are set as soon as the aircraft stops. Then the pilots set the parking brake. Once the main gears are chocked, the mechanic can tell the pilots to release the parking brake and roll back onto the chocks and then set the P-brake again. I wait for the mechanic or one of my fellow ramp agents to signal me to pass that onto the pilots. That's what I did when I placed my wands parallel to each other.

What are those spinning things below your feet while you're directing the plane?
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 7 лет назад
Leo Tapp Those are the rollers that move the cargo. Cargo is usually stacked on "cookie sheets" which are basically giant, flat pieces of metal on which freight is stacked and those rollers make contact with the bottom of the sheets and move them on/off the plane.
@ChicagoAirportSpotter
@ChicagoAirportSpotter 7 лет назад
Leo Tapp And they're moving here because it was so cold out, we jam the joysticks that we use to operate them to keep the hydraulic fluid warm so that our chabces of having an equipment failure in the middle of a ground operation decrease.

@@ChicagoAirportSpotter interesting. I'm originally from Chicago, however I do this same job in Tampa. I was wondering why you had the rollers on that whole time. I'm thinking on coming back to O'Hare soon, I'll be a completely different environment if and when I do.

@callmekirbox Absolutely - I'm reminded of this video almost every single day at work. Everyone in this video still works at the airport in some capacity, 2 of them I see every day (the 2 that do the chest bump). But other ramp guys have come and gone, we've had numerous people transfer to other cities, a couple have passed away, etc. Life happens. Time flies. Appreciate every moment.
