Rivers are flooding in the Pacific Northwest !! Wood and rocks moving , every section running strong !
It is the time to be extremely careful, to take more chill lines, the time to realize that with this high water, leaving your boat and swimming can only be your very very last chance.
To all the people visiting the gorge... you need to watch out. We paddle this stuff daily. We know the lines perfectly and we are aware of the wood situation..... it's another game out there right now so everybody stay safe !!!
I will always do my best to save a river buddy but the line is thin and there's nothing less helpful than becoming 2 swimmers when trying to save a friend. sorry that It took so long to get you out but the wood on the side was killing us...

Hey, just saw this swim and rescue on Reddit's Whitewater sub, and am really glad to find the original poster! Just wanted to remind you of how fantastic of a job you did keeping your eyes on him and making sure he was safe until you got to a part of the river where self-rescue/swimming was feasible. You guys are the definition of experts Edit: God damn man... I've seen this 10+ times, but I still flinch every time you almost run into a strainer or sweeper close to the river bank. You had some seriously close calls that you honestly probably didn't even realize until you watched the footage again later.

Thanks for not playing dumb music. Natural sounds are much better. Great video. Any longer they guy might have drowned. He was out of juice. Should make an IMAX movie out of these rafting events.

Really? Shouldn't he have let him grab on and stay on then paddled him to an eddy? Looks like he jammed him up a few times. I don't know shit but that looked pretty bad

@@thegolfdude most of the times its harder to paddle into an eddy with someone holding onto your boat than just himself swiming into an eddy. You can let him grab your boat to get some breath/boayance but he has to get into an eddy himself.

Honestly one of the best swimming efforts I've ever seen. That was the definition of aggressive self rescue swimming, and it actually looks like he would have successfully gotten himself out at the 2:40 mark, even if Aniol hadn't been there to give him a boat to grab onto... not to take away from Aniol's effort, because I doubt he would have been close enough to the shore if it hadn't been for that big push at 1:49 in the video. I can't believe the swimmer wasn't completely exhausted by that point. To see him still actively swimming towards shore that long into one of the most punishing and brutal swims I've ever seen was honestly amazing.

It's hard to describe exactly how utterly exhausting a swim like this is... in cold water, swimming hard and being tossed like a ragdoll while only getting breaths of air every so often. He was about done being able to swim so it's good they were able to get him into an eddy.

The way he collapsed from exhaustion as soon as he got himself up on the shore was very telling. Can't imagine how that dude must have felt after a swim like that, would be like combining the biggest adrenaline rush of your life with utter exhaustion... I've had swims in much easier rapids than this that lasted 1/4 of the time as this one, and still thought I was finished. This swim is so out of the league of anything I've ever experienced that it isn't even funny.

A swim in class 5 or 6 rapids is very dangerous. With a crew, it can be managed, but the risk is still very high. Glad he came out breathing. He'll be telling that story for the rest of his life.

I wonder what do you do next, is that boat and paddle retrievable? What does the guy do? Walk down the river? I mean sure you can catch the boat, but it might be waaaay down the river right?

Sometimes you dont find it. Sometimes its stuck and sometimes you have to get it when theres less runoff and the water is lower. Often someone cooler has spotted it and stolen it...and yes walk your ass back to the meeting point. Water that high, those are rated 250lbs...unless you wanna luge it down. but hes awesome and could barely handle a little of that so i wouldnt suggest it

That's what I call scare water. An outa shape boater would have succumbed. I took a swim about 1/3 of that pounding on the NF Smith at 20feet when my Cat flipped. It was insane...and I ended up with two black eyes. Also took another bad swim on the bottom half of the New that flows into Burnt Ranch

Great video, but at the end when you hit that hole to get into the eddy you where violating the number one rule of rescuing someone never put your self in a very dangerous position to save someone. I know you did save him but it look like you got held back in that hole, but I don’t know I’m a catarafter not a kayaker.

Not safe to. They teach you how to ride the river down if you fall out. The guy still in his had to stay safe first then reach a point where he could help. But there were a couple times he did to rest and breathe a sec.

Don’t let this scare you. These guys are adrenaline junkies who takle what most never attempt. I do white water up to level 3 but on very popular rivers with large groups. What these guys did is not the normal.

Ну вообще чтоб научится ходить на каяке без проблем по сложным рекам, нужны годы тренировок, проходят они на природе, причем в горах и тп. Физически + морально это не каждому понравится. А так - это физкультура высшего класса)

this is asking for life threatening trouble.. I have been professionally rafting wild rivers for years in northern california and southern oregon, and I don't recommend doing this shit during high water, unless you really want to take a big chance that you won't lodge upon some drowning situation... Go Pro is just full of shit if this is encouraging such chances... be safe, do not go into big flood water stages... did you see those trees in the flow? If you stick onto one of those... it is goodbye. What's the point? ..

Ken Nelson - SoundFarm Band because after a very small amount of the kayaker out there has mastered whitewater and the way you train is by pushing yourself and that it what you have to do. Also flooded rivers like that are fun af

Ken Nelson - SoundFarm Band if you have to ask what’s the point then you’d never understand the answer anyway. That was a completely safe Big Water run. Heavy flow and large waves and hole dodging. It doesn’t get any better than Giant wave trains. The only real technical part of this section of river in the video was the rescue. Cheers

Boaters need to start posting videos of the fatal kayaking accidents to show how irresponsible the modern boaters are today. Yes it looks like great fun but no consideration of the consequences of a mishap. Swimmer did do a great job of swimming in that water. Very hard to do!

T Tank are you a “boater” then if so ..(I’m assuming) why would you ever want your family to see that. The problem with your questions that experienced “boaters” don’t have the kinda videos because they know what their doing. Gerd bout died. They posted it. But that is rare. Again because they know what they are doing. If this scars you then don’t watch and don’t run it.

Flush drowning is a real thing Flush drowning is when a swimmer isn’t held in place but generally moving downstream through rough water. Repeated dunking and/or being hit by waves causes the swimmer to aspirate water compromising the airway. Eventually, getting enough oxygen in the lungs proves too difficult and they pass out and drown. Flush drowning is common on large swollen rivers and high gradient streams, often at flood stage. Another concern is that flush drownings are almost always a fatality.

WOW. This is a lesson of how NOT to rescue a swimmer. This guy was in the water WAAAY too long. With 2 or 3 other paddlers above and below him, there were several opportunities to get him into shore. For example, at about 1:00, he was almost on the eddyline and you went past instead of spinning decisively and making sure he was towed right to the shore in that eddy.
