Gordon Brown has said he ''understands and respects'' the position of Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg in stating he wants to speak to Conservative leader David Cameron about a possible coalition.
The Tories have won most votes in the general election, but not an overall majority.
Speaking to reporters for the first time about the future of a hung parliament, the prime minister said he was ''willing to see any of the party leaders''.

His role in helping the UK recover from the 2008 financial crisis is one that he will never get much credit for. The coalition proved that it was no easy task. Between 2009 Q3 (first quarter of growth post-recession) and 2010 Q2 (end of Brown's premiership) GDP grew by about 2% (adjusted for inflation). In the first 8 (full) quarters of the coalition, GDP grew by 0.34% across the whole period, a period marked by further recession. GDP isn't everything of course, but perhaps an indication that Brown didn't get everything wrong. Like you say, not a premiership without its faults, but he probably is regarded a bit too negatively.

@@MrAndroidData Assuming Gordon Brown had won 2010, I seriously doubt he'd have swung 2015. The idea of Britain giving 23 years to Labour is just so unprecedented that I just can't see it without something crazy happening. With that in mind, and the fact that Cameron was bending over to appease the Euroskeptics from the second he became party leader, I think it's still very possible we would have had a tory government and a Brexit if Brown had been elected. It would have been interesting to see Brown's premiership as even his rivals described him as highly intelligent and connected with his values, but I don't think any individual could have prevented the course Britain is on. Except one of the several liars who told you all a load of bollocks to sell you down the river in the EU ref ;)

@Heijbs given the presidential style of recent British parliaments I think it would be a lot to swallow for many voters to end up with another leader they did not get a chance to vote for especially after all the fuss about the leadership elections. There is also the problem that Lib/Lab would need nationalist parties support and the latter will not always be working for the UK as a whole's best interests.

@@trai1338 Sorry but he was just following like a sheep some general EU policy - I don't believe the allocated investments were better than keeping the gold . perhaps you should read the Daily Mail or a book of any sort . For your information I live in Thailand and the Daily Mail is not readily available .here , only the Bangkok Post .

@shani6969 lib dems aren't sellouts, they had to form a coalition with either the cons or labour if they wanted to help create a stable gov't. The Tories agreed to implement some Lib Dem policies such as replacing Trident to save money and other stuff, and the Tories agreed to moderate some of their intended policies. The Tories were willing to compromise. Labour however, according to reports, were not willing to compromise and were simply handing the Lib Dems the Labour manifesto.

@andyx1205 oh you had to throw in the tired old "Stephen harper, the Canadian George bush"... You do realize Stephen Harper's political ideals are MORE LIBERAL THAN OBAMA... Obama is a centre right conservative same with Stephen harper, but Harper more left of Obama. Now I don't agree with alot of what Stephen harper has done with social policy but his economic policy is solid and wouldn't bankrupt us like the liberals and NDP would.
