Honestly I loved it, the piece and the performance. Very vibrant and enjoyable music. I happen to be reading his [Gordon Jacob's] book "The Composer and His Art" at the time you uploaded this.. I hadn't even heard of him or his music before, although then I had noticed you recently uploaded his oboe sonatina. Thanks for all the great work you do uploading these score videos!
I will be uploading more chamber works by Gordon Jacob. He is well worth the attention. He can be diffuse at times but also playful, a kind of English Hindemith/Poulenc
It feels like Jacob played a lot of piano reductions in his day. A lot of the piano part is almost like an orchestral reduction rather than a solo. It's still quite a nice piece, just a bit different.
I couldn't put my finger on it, but I think you're right. It's not a virtuoso piano solo full of idiomatic sweeps and clusters and mechanical witchcraft like, for example, the Ravel. This would be a reasonable student concerto for pianists in the same vein as Kabalevsky's first cello and violin concertos.
