I had to stop listening to his music after my divorce. I learned he died in a text message from my estranged daughter, who I hadn't heard from in 11 years. She said she heard he died and she broke down crying. She remembered me singing his songs when she went to work with me. We are due to meet up to get reacquainted this Summer.
I pray that you are reunited with your daughter this summer. God gives many ways to reconcile with those who have been hurt and carry that pain for years . The connection you both have through this music may be one of them . Please post an update 😊
@@buzzmorgan4351 thanks for your well wishes. The music was just a bit on the nose in some cases. Other times, it was just a reminder of a happier time. Anyway, I can listen these days. Life goes on, after all.
As a proud Canadian, Gordon was one of our great icons. We have all his beautiful songs to listen to here on RU-vid. What a beautiful and amazing songwriter and singer he was. Rest easy Gordon Lightfoot. You will be dearly, be missed.
@Jon Walsh I was conceived in Canada, born in England and raised in the States. And, if conditions here in the States continue to deteriorate I might just pull up stakes and return to the land of my conception. Canada is a safe, decent and happy place to live.
Hey, We in the US Love the Gord too. I had everyone of his Albums. But, lost them all in an electrical fire when our home of 33yrs burnt 2yrs ago. I had approx 2500 albums & over a 1100 of them were signed by the artists. Thanks Ms Diane Halsey you FireBUG!!
I met Gord 42 years ago and he has always been an insipration to me. A wonderful person who helped me with a music video project. My heart has been pieced with his passing. "It's been good to know ya" . Damn.
I am also from Orillia and Gord and my dad were friends. When I was a little kid, he came by our house. Sitting on our couch, he pulled out his 12 string and played Sundown and Pussywillows and Cattails! It was so inspirational that as I got older, I taught myself to play guitar and have been playing now for almost 50 years. We may miss him but he.left us with his greatest gift; his music. RIP Gord!
You were so fortunate to have him play at your home, and giving you that inspiration. I'm sure you made Gord smile from "up there". Play some of his tunes for him.
How lucky you are to have witnessed this master so close up and personal. I envy you my friend. Your father was also a lucky man to have been acquainted with Gord
Like everyone here, 61yr ole man sitting here balling my eyes out remembering so many beautiful moments throughout my life that the background sounds were of this man and his lovely music. Thank You for being a big part of our lives. God Bless this beautiful soul.....❤🤌🏻🙏🏻 🌬💀🏴☠️
That song must have been the gift from god to a songwriter. If you wrote 1000 songs.. you need only say you wrote THAT one to make your name. Boy oh boy.. like the sun in the sky .. in my life I'm just old enough to remember when that song and "Sundown" were new hits on the radio and those weren't ALL he did but he could have retired on those!
I am an American Citizen living here in Florida and have always pictured myself going to Canada just to see Mr Lightfoot. I always appreciated his wonderful music and listen to him often but sadly, he is no longer among us. Bless this great (if not the greatest) folk singer of all time and may Canada be blessed with his music forever. Thank you Mr Lightfoot for all you have given us!
Gordon Lightfoot lived in my neighbourhood and my Dad who was a huge fan pointed him out at the store when I was a boy! I didnt know who he was until much later.
Gord's Gold is an absolute "must have" for any serious music collection (in my opinion). The world is now a much smaller place without him to open our hearts and minds
this was my moms favorite singer back in the 70s, i hear him and think, and miss my mom. Thank you for this amazing music and a great Canadian singer songwriter and Canadian ICON your music will live on forever............i just hope people will listen in the years to come thank you Gordon god bless you
Feeling the sting of mortality today. We lost a great troubadour in Gordon Lightfoot. You were my gateway to the 12 String. Rest in peace knowing your music will continue to touch many.
They rang the bell in the Mariner's Church in Detroit this week. Thirty times. Once for each sailor on the Edmund Fitzgerald and once for Gordon. It will ring thirty times on every anniversary of the sinking. Gordon Lightfoot has been added to the "crew and the captain well-seasoned" forever. God bless them all.
I met Gord 42 years ago and he has always been an insipration to me. A wonderful person who helped me with a music video project. My heart has been pieced with his passing. "It's been good to know ya" . Damn.
Such a great talent. I’ve been listening to his music all morning and the memories flood back. You will be missed, Gordon, but your music will live on. Rest in peace.
22 classic cuts from one of the truly great folk musicians ever put on records-thank you so much for this treat!!!🌟🌟🌟🌟👍👍😎🎧🎤🎼🎸🤗Gordon Lightfoot-A true music legend!!! One of the finest 70’s artists!!!
How sad another voice of the boomer generation goes off to join the immortals. Thank you God for giving us this great , talented balladeer. God bless all who fell in love with his work. Prayers for his family, friends and fans. It make me cry to hear of his death. But we can still forever listen to him sing and play. Teardrops an toil. Amen.
Heard "Sundown" on a transistor radio in the 70s as a little kid. Still remember being entranced by the sound of the guitar & hypnotized by the lyrics even though they went way over my 5 or 6 year old head. Growing up around the Great Lakes in Chicago, you appreciate the terrifying beauty of winter storms on the water and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" spoke especially to people like me. RIP Gordon 😞
The lyrics to "Sundown" went right over my head too. I only found out as an adult what the song was about: Gordon's affair with his back-up singer. Why do songs about fooling around always sound so good, despite the subject matter?
Everyone of the 18 ticket stubs holds memories of your wonderful gentle music I grew up with in the 60's and decades beyond - A true Canadian sadly missed by all.
Gordon was a favourite of my late husband who introduced me to his music. We listened to this album at the viewing (no funeral) and it was cremated with him. Only just found out about Gordon's passing.
So sorry for ur loss, I hope u have found peace in ur memories of him. I believe we will see our loved ones when we pass so I pray he'll be up front waiting to reunite with u!!❤️😊❤️
I can't believe I'm listening to Gord's Gold while watching the Leafs finally in the second round! Go Leafs, and rest in peace, our dear Canadian troubadour. What a legend and what a legacy. May 1st henceforth will always be Gordon Lightfoot Day for me for the few years I have left! Thank you for your live concerts and your great songs. I've loved playing them as much as I love listening to them. You will be dearly missed. May our country always live up to your visions of it.
Oh my goodness, l was thinking that very same thing on Tuesday night that for me May 1 will always be Gordon Lighfoot Day! Well said. My sentiments as well. Cheers
Gord was one of those once in a generation talents, that we all are lucky to have lived at the same time with. He made some mistakes as a human being, as we all do -- but his music was always honest and from the heart, with amazing melodies and harmonies, and will live forever.
I have so many of Gordon's records left behind by my father and so many memories of listening to his 8 tracks travelling with my parents...nobody will come close to this legend again. Thank you for the beautiful music Mr. Lightfoot..i hold you n my heart forever...
This gentlemen's music has been part of life from first time heard his songs (1972). Not only was my companion (other Good Lord) to frequent trips back home growing up . His music so much remind my hometown- Valentine Texas.and does until this day . Never gotten tired attending concerts near or far . Amazing voice , lyrics accompany his original guitar sound . Think HE Is & always be ONE BEST - for Me 50 years and counting ! YMS"
I was born in 72 and have very fond childhood memories of my dad putting in his cassette and heading down the sun and shadow scattered highways and logging roads. I named 2 cats after him, too. 💐💐💐💐
I had this on 8 track. I haven't listened to the whole thing in at least 45 years but I just listened to it and I remembered every word of every song. Gordon, you will be missed!
@@SheffieldRock where can I get the vinyl, I've recently started to collect some of my old favs and would love to hear this on my phonograph player!! My kids have no idea how awesome vinyl was, they do now!! 😊
RIP Gord you were the best Canadian folk singer. I'm glad to have lived in your time. Thanks for the great music Gord. There will never be another Canadian singer like you. RockinRonny.
This music played on those 401 road trips from Chatham to St.Thomas to visit family. It played at Weddings and I wore my granny shirt and poncho. I would have been about 12 yrs old...it was grand. Cotton Jenny made me cry happy tears and tears for those that passed. RIP Mr. Lightfoot ❤
It's Monday night, May 1st and I'm so sad because this wonderful man passed away today. His songs are so much a part of my young adult life. He had a good life.....
Man was a storyteller like noone else before or since. I only began listening to his music a few years ago but I appreciate what he did for the industry. The people he inspired and the hearts he touched. Rest in Peace.
I was in Bangkok last year, a few weeks after Gordon passed away. As I sat eating breakfast, one of his songs came on in the restaurant. It brought tears to my eyes, knowing how far and wide his music stretched.
Playing his music now for my mother who had a stroke. We in hospital and I am playing his music for her because she loves it. One of her favorites ❤ thankful for his songs to make my mother happy and gives her comfort during this difficult time. ❤🎶❤🎶
Missing the man and his music. I learned to play listening to Gord and John Denver. Left the navy in 74. Ended up on the street in San Francisco in 75. Played Gords songs there for change. I have everything he ever did. I have copied every piece of sheet music and have every recording saved. Thanks Gord. Through everything Ive been through in my life, you were there with a song for it. Amen. God keep you.
I too was in the Navy from 1973 -1977. I listened to Lightfoot with head phones on a reel to reel….Sundown was going big and Care Free Highway…..but I listen to all his stuff for hours and hours. It never gets old….
Gordies' sounds, with every memory they have attached to them, remind me how we were much better people, a long time ago. Paradise Lost, but not forgotton.
Gordon Lightfoot will never be forgotten by me, just as special times, and dreams of Love and Peace, which truly inspired beyond words; will never be forgotten. Truths in his music are held close in my heart, just are those dreams of Love and Peace. Canada you have lost so very much, just as we all have; may Love and Peace prevail passionately. Rest in peace Gordon Lightfoot.
@@maryhudgin Thank you, your thought will be a cherished always; held close in my heart. So many years, and dreams of my Canadian soul mate; which transcend time. Oh Canada, may you always passionately treasure the beauty, and spirit of your lands from "sea to sea", and the truths in Gordon Lightfoot's songs. I promise I will with joy, peace, and Love.
@@maryhudgin Thank You for your kind words. I've been blessed by exposure to and the company of fine artists and noble minds through my life. Youth of today doesn't enjoy such influences. I am the product of fertile times and ever so grateful for the privilege of having experienced them. So it goes... Namaste.
I got this album when it first came out. Even through it is his greatest hits, I have never hesitated to someone to add it to their music collection. My favorite - Song for a Winter's Night.
Absolutely! “Song for a Winter’s Night” is my favorite as well. The picture he paints in one’s mind makes you feel like you’re there sharing his feelings.
May you rest in peace Gordon, you were a legend, a talented singer and songwriter, a musician extraordinaire and Canada's National Treasure and you gave me so many years of happy memories listening to your amazing music. Best concert was in Fort Worth, in 1979, sitting no more than 20 feet away. I was sick with 102 temp and strep throat (yes, I'm sure the other people appreciated that!) But there was no way I was going to miss seeing you in concert. 💔💔💔 😢😢😢
That man, that spirit , genius with his words!, I salute you on this final moment and continue to hear your magic wave in my heart that will live on through time.., thank you Gordon ❤
Rest easy good sir, many thanks for the treasures you have left us. Our Maple Leaf should be flown at half mast in recognition of your contribution to our heritage. We have lost a true statesman.
There is so much loss in the world every day that sometimes one becomes inured to it. But Gordon Lightfoot's passing has made me weep. For the starkness of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald bring up memories of those of us from coastal towns standing around in fear as the gales of November came early. To "If I Could Read Your Mind," helping me break up with a fiance. And the concert where my Uncle Mike and I shared a magnificent evening sharing our love of this amazing singer-songwriter and person. Rest in Peace, Gordon Lightfoot. May your memory be eternal.
it was 1978. anytime spent with dad was awesome and spent listening to great music. I was on the summer side of life, and my carefree highway was 95 north to Baxter State Park in Millinocket, Maine. RIP DAD. RIP GORDON. ❤ 🙏
RIP Mr Lightfoot. You were my favorite in my youth and a treasure to us all back then - and now, you've left us the gift of your amazing music of beauty and depth. 🤍💙💚💜🤍
GL is a permanent musical fixture in my life. On a snowy night in Toledo in 1983, I held hands with a date as he sang "Song for a Winter's Night." Magical, even though it turned out to be our only date! Years later, married for over 20 years, the actual love of my life and I finally saw him together. If old Gord could see us now, I know he'd be so proud.
I've loved Gordon for what seems like forever...he overcame a lot in his life and enriched the world with his heartfelt songs. One of Dylan's favorite songwriters...and that's saying something. Amazing legacy he left behind...second to none, IMHO. Missin' ya, Gord, but I can speak for millions worldwide you're not forgotten...ever.
I've seen him concert about a dozen times over the decades. When my daughter was 7, I took her to see him (it was the first of over 50 concerts I've taken my daughter to); when she left for college years later, the only thing she took with her, aside from clothes, was the pic of her backstage with Gordon's arm around her. A gentleman. An icon. He will be sorely missed.
Years ago, I owned a '77 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham (ex beat this GREAT car to death!) with a GREAT factory "8 track"! I played "Gord's Gold" and "Captain and Tennille's Greatest Hits" until she "possessed" the car! I MISS THE MUSIC AND THE CAR!
Ive listened to Mr. Lightfoots music since 1974. On my 18th birthday, one of my older brothers bought me a copy of Gords Gold. Have listened to it over the years wanting to see him live in concert. Finally got to see him live while i was in north east Wyoming working bout 12 years back. Was a real treat to see him do his hits from my youth. Smile on my face and a tear in my eye. R.I.P. Sir. Your music is still timeless.
Omg I love him so much! Fly high my angel till we meet again ! God bless you and yours! Your words are ony heart forever! Thanks for the beautiful music you've blessed us all with! God bless!
