Technically, Gorgobopsids were not yet mammals. They were therapsids, which group includes mammals, and they were on their way to become mammals, but hadn't gotten there yet. They Were incredibly cool, however.

Great stuff. As others have noted, there are a lot of us out here who are really into ancient mammals. I was a park ranger for 10 years at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Eastern Oregon. Our fossils ranged from about 37 mya to about 6 mya. I found that most people, especially kids, knew more about dinosaurs than about ancient mammals. I always tried my best to up their interest in mammals. Stem mammals and members of extinct families of mammals are totally fascinating and should be better understood. Thanks again.

They weren't true mammals, they were mammal-like reptiles, "reptomammals" if you please; whereas Dinosaurs were "reptavians", a cross between reptile and bird in a lot of ways, at least in theory at that.
@SomeOne-vq4fo
@SomeOne-vq4fo 4 года назад
I mean sure, but to be fair, "reptile" is pretty ill defined. Look at crocodiles, birds and lizards (and other diapsids) for example. You can put crocks and birds easily into a scientifically sensible group, i.e. clade, without including the lizards, but it's not so easy (impossible) to put lizards and crocks into a clade without also including birds. Yet, colloquially, lizards, snakes, crocks, turtles, etc. are reptiles and birds are not.
@chissstardestroyer
@chissstardestroyer 4 года назад
@@SomeOne-vq4fo Birds aren't even reptiles to begin with, they're something altogether different, in all sorts of ways. But scientific categories do amount to hard-to-define categories at that.
@SomeOne-vq4fo
@SomeOne-vq4fo 4 года назад
@@chissstardestroyer Birds, crocks & dinos share a common ancestor that other reptiles don't. They are placed in a group called archosaurs. In evolutionary terms, crocks are more closely related to birds than they are to lizards, tuatara, etc. (lepidosaurs), for example. Similar to you being more closely related to your 1st cousin than your 2nd cousin. > But scientific categories do amount to hard-to-define categories at that. Sometimes, but not in this case. Cladistics is about shared common ancestor. So the group/clade is defined as the common ancestor + all of it's descendants. That's it, really. Sure, you can define a reptile (say scaly, cold blooded, 4 legged - even if it had atrophied in snakes - animal), but you can never put it as a single separate branch in the tree of life.
@chissstardestroyer
@chissstardestroyer 4 года назад
@@SomeOne-vq4fo Yes, they do, but that does not make them all even reptiles, some are, and some aren't; for instance, all reptiles are cold blooded, they don't use their food to regulate their inner body temperature, whereas birds do, so they have a much higher caloric intake need per hour.

You were right about not being true mammals but they were not reptiles they were stem-mammals or proto-mammals
@wcdeich4
@wcdeich4 3 года назад
Cool video :) I guess people already pointed out Gorgons being more stem-mammals than true mammals. Now that everyone is going by cladistics, they really love to split hairs. Actually back when I was in school, they said Gorgons & other stem mammals actually were reptiles. Now cladistics says both reptiles & mammals evolved from "basal amniotes"

Thanks for some well-done videos, focussing on what we think we know rather than just presenting a freak show / horror film (as a lot of other channels do). I've often heard that gorgonopsids are thought to have been hairy because hair was found in their coprolites (fossil poo). But could this just as easily mean that some of their prey had hair? Also, a note about the largest gorgonopsids - while inostrancevia was the longest, rubidgea was apparently the heaviest - and very scary. Sorry - feeling jingoistic (it was from my country of origin).

I love the Gorgonopsids. I've only recently come to understand how the mass extinctions of the past have made the ecosystems of today possible. Like the tree of life occasionally gets a good trim to prevent any one group of animals from becoming permanently dominant or permanently subservient in their time. The cycle of extinction increasing biodiversity is both ironic and fascinating.

I would love you to do a video on Megaloceros (giant deer) or the Steppe Bison, I live on the Norfolk coast (UK) and collect fossils of the mammals that inhabited Ice age "Doggerland." An in-depth look at the history of Doggerland's Mammals would be very interesting, as the change in the ice age habitat was profound between the glacial and inter-glacial periods. It's incredible that an area of land can swing between Arctic-type tundra and an environment resembling African Savanah many times back and forth over such a relatively short period. I appreciate how much research you would need to put into a video like this as I've been researching Doggerland Mammal species for years! All the best mate, Louie :)

I've always found the history and evolution of mammals, including the stem mammals and synapsids fascinating, even more interesting than dinosaurs, yeah, dinosaurs are pretty cool, but they were not the only prehistoric lifeforms. Most were evolutionary dead ends, other than the small lineage that led to birds. Mammals, beginning with our ancient synapsid and therapsid ancestors actually ruled the world two times, and continue so to this day. A lot of people assume every prehistoric vertebrate is a dinosaur, such as Dimetrodon, which is a synapsid, and not only predates dinosaurs, but is more closely related to us and other present day mammals that it is to any dinosaur or reptile.
