Up til now, Prodeus is my favorite boomer shooter. My only gripe is I really wish the checkpoint system was different. Zero punishment for dying really kills the fun factor for me. But if someone is interested in playing a game where death doesn't matter, and wants zero frustration, then Prodeus is the game for them.

Yeap a very good question that is just a bit different for everyone, for me it is those things that you say, but one can replace another for me, say you have two weapons that you can carry like Necromunda, that instead has the level design and combat gameplay of a boomer in my eyes :)

@@ZlimBratSki I'm relatively strict, but that is fair though the only one i wouldn't concede on would be movement, it's too vital IMO. and it probably gets better later, but necromunda's levels just felt like hallways, but i only played a few levels.

Level design in modern games are much better, cause it's modern and fully 3D, while Doom's design looks crazy, cause they thought that realistic design was too simple and not interesting, because of 2D geometry. Quake had better technology and better design, but Dusk, Prodeus, Amid Evil, etc. are more complicated. Just check how crazy levels look in Amid Evil and in WIP shooter Supplice. So, modern retro-shooters are actually better in level design.

@@42ccb actually, i was comparing these games to megawads and mods like ancient aliens in my head. .wads and mods like AD (quake mod) are far more complicated than DUSK and amid evil when it comes to level design. take Tears of the False God for Arcane dimensions, it has more enemies than any level in DUSK times two, is totally non-linear, and mixes arena fights, normal encounters, plus has fairly fun exploration elements, plus two boss fights with two endings. takes about an hour to beat fully with both bosses, but is self-contained, so it alone could easily be a game session for a day. The Forgotten Sepulcher is a similar story. most boomershooters are not at that level, with some exceptions like supplice and wrath, which are relitively close, but these games are practically mods already. though DUSK is not really the main target either, cause i was also more-so referring to boltgun and sprawl, which are more primitive than even the original quake.

Boomer is strange term as it better called retro. Doom Eternal isn't fully retro, it's reimplementing a classics with a new mechanics and modern elements (like a marks that shows where you need to go). It's more like that this game partially a retro, but has new in it. Some people even hated new mechanics, like platforming, chainsawing and etc.

By this definition Doom Eternal is a Boomer Shooter as it’s a modern game that follows its predecessors footsteps mechanically and updates the graphics to modern technologies standard. Retro FPS is old FPS games from that era, Boomer Shooters are games designed to feel like Retro FPS games, with modernised visuals, there’s nothing strange about the term.

Of course it is a "boomer shooter"! Arkanoid is the original "boomer shooter". Air Hockey is boomerest "boomer-shooter" of them all! Mario is a "boomer shooter", once you get the ranged attack. Pinball is a "boomer-shooter". Lethal Enforcers is a "boomer shooter". NES Contra is a "boomer shooter". You shoot and there is a "boom" . Everything is a "boomer shooter". 🤣

While I do agree with you for the most part except for Doom -16 and eternal I think their gore systems are good especially considering the glory kills, they do give off good impressions for the first half of the games. I still think we need to remember that modern boomer shooters visually tries to be very simple, hence it wouldn't make much sense implementing a super advanced gore system, sure the protagonists can add a lot to this and I think Viscerafest does a good job at it as an example. But with what we have, the sizes of the teams creating these games and that the genre is starting to bloom in recent years taking these things in to consideration then we are on a good track to eventually get that truly gorey FPS game in a foreseeable future. Also I like my tomato sauce I think it adds flair to the game, I'd rather have tomato sauce then non :)

@@ZlimBratSki Doom 2016/Eternal do have a technically solid gore system, and Eternal even improves it well beyond 2016. Neither fails on that front, and i haven't said they did. Where they did fail - is its implementation and delivery. The technical side of the things within the game engine - is only 1/3 of the whole picture, so of course it is not enough. We must not forget that other games exist too. And they set a completely different standard. The lack of a proper sound design, protagonist interaction and overly cartoony characters (sesame slayer?!) make all the alleged "gore" and most of the glory kills in either of the Doom reboots rather tame. They are nowhere near the finishers you get to see in Manhunt (King!), Rogue Warrior, Evil Within, Dead Space (compared to DE - this one is a grandpa!), Blood and of course - the original SOF. OG Blood takes less than a hundred megabytes, same for Brutal Doom. Soldier of Fortune merely a few hundred. Same for Manhunt. Old, long outdated and obsolete game engines. This goes to say that you don't need an advanced tech to create a brutal, gory feel for a game. You need some other components. Think about what they are. Understanding of a concept. What makes a brutal, savage impression. Not the number of dog treats flying left and right, that's for sure. As an example, take a look at what happens when an enemy is set on fire in Blood and what happens in Doom Eternal. Brutal Doom and SOF are both based on very old and simple technology, and yet they manage to do what those over-inflated modern games do not. Because, the concept is spot on. There is no need for a complicated system. There is a need for the right concept. As for the idea that some blood effects (aka tomato sauce) are better than none, - it only holds true in a gaming vacuum. Meaning, for as long as you have not seen anything better. And once you have, you will start considering all the lower standards as no longer acceptable. Basically, Brutal Doom's gore system ticks all the checkboxes. It's pretty simple. Just do that and add protagonist interaction and you have a win on your hands. And that, brings us full circle to the godfather of all obstacles on the way to any quality project: hard work. And as we know, that beast is BFG-impervious. At the very least.

It's a great game, just not quite as gorey as the ones on the list :)

Problem is, rather than to make something new they just copy what exists, like Prodeus looks like a straight copy of Doom 2016, but Dusk for example feels like Quake, but has something unique in combat, atmosphere. Dusk is the best modern oldschool FPS. And maybe even its release made popular retro-shooter formule of games (but maybe it was Brutal Doom or Doom 2016)

Yeah its not wrong seeing it like that, it's main sources of inspiration are Resident evil 4 and Blood. Why I mentioned RE4 is because I recently learned it, had no idea that was the case before so I emphasised it a little :)

@@ThunderStrikeEngine it has a shitty story and guns, pretty much all it has in common with COD, the gunplay is way different than COD, just because it has a basic military tone doesn't mean it's like COD, it's more like F.E.A.R than anything else, trepang2 has an actual bit of decent things to criticize, you can come up with way more than just "feels like COD"
