Now I know that you can fix boots in a much more appropriate manner but these old boots are in bad shape and I just want to get a few more months out of them.
I use Gorilla Glue to re-attach the sole to the boot. I had used Shoegoo in the past but that just did not hold up.

Gorilla 🦍 Glue helped me save money while I was going through a rough financial situation, I glued the sections that were coming off and I have extended my work boots lifespan. Good 👍 to go for another 4 years plus at least.

I've glued out Keen hiking boots with Gorilla Glue, and it works like no other glue. It does not come apart. Tip....to your squeezeout cleanup at about an hour of drytime, and it will be easier to remove. When it dries rock hard....forget it.

Thank you. I have the sole covering the toe starting to seperate. I'm going to cobbler to see what they can do. I'll post the cost and what they will use for the adhesive. these are 200 dollar hiking boots.

+Robin S If you have the chance to resole them proper than I would do that for sure. These boots of mine were 10+ years old and I think I paid $175 on sale. The leather is just fine but the rubber is a gone. I have seen people make boots last a life time with new soles.

FACT IS; if you use substance 1 to hold seam together, the contamination and dirt will cause it to fail, then you remove it and try substance 2 and it works better BECAUSE the previous one captured all the dirt and it was removed leaving a fresh clean surface for the 2nd attempt. No matter which glue you used first it will be insufficient and no matter which glue you used next it will work well due to the way the first amount of contamination was removed by the glue. That is just the way it is so: just use the same glue over two tries and the second try will eventually grip clean surfaces and you will eventually have success even if you try many times...hopefully twice might do it. BUY EXTRA GLUE FOR SHOES, THEY ARE FILTHY

+speckspeck to those who wish to visit a cobbler, they have the best glue and they know these secrets, not to mention they can resole your shoe for a decent price and they will be as new on the bottoms. Eventually they'll need it

Always CLEAN well w/ grease/adhesive/gunk remover like ACETONE (naptha, goo gone, even soapy water will help). Gorilla Glue is POLYURETHANE glue; They cure w/ moisture, so you really need to dampen / moisten one side water and glue the other, then clamp or use weights as shown. Polyurethane glues are not intended for this purpose like the silicone glues are. (She Goo, Marine glue, silicone caulk, et al.). Polyurethane glues (Gorilla etc.) always seep out a significant amount foam when curing - that's normal, and you merely shave it off w/ a utility knife / razor blade. Any amount showing can be colored w/ magic marker, shoe polish, sharpie, etc., or even sealed w/ silicone.

Rocky Mountain Resole and others can make those boots like new. They bond an entire new sole unit on. Those boots are just nicely broken in. Don't toss them.

Learning curve alert! Before coming across your video I read about Gorilla Glue being used to reattach soles and decided to give it a try. I also used too much Gorilla Glue when I used this method to reattach the sole of an old chukka. I then placed the shoe on an outside wooden deck with 3 cement paving stones on top of it for clamping pressure. The next morning I removed the paving stones to find the chukka was now as flat as a pancake and firmly attached to the deck. It was difficult to pry it off and time consuming to pull away the upper part of the shoe from the inside. It's never fit quite the same despite my efforts at remediation and squeezes my left foot uncomfortably. It's true that this type of glue is not flexible, so keeping that in mind there are other choices that are more appropriate when flexibility is a necessary quality. Urethane liquid nails, the type that comes in a caulking tube, is for me a definite contender as I have used it successfully to patch a hole in the Vibram sole of a different work boot. If the leather is in decent shape you can clean and recondition it. Even if it appears beyond redemption you'd be surprised what a little attention with a good leather conditioner and elbow grease can accomplish. You don't have to throw away a comfortable old pair of shoes or boots when the methods, techniques and materials for repairing, redyeing, resoling and reconditioning are within your grasp!
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 6 лет назад
After giving the glue a go I found that it was not very effective. Just did not last long. Also these old boots had some rot around the foam. This caused them to separate no matter what I used to put them together.
@plk5520
@plk5520 6 лет назад
Land to House Depending on what remains of the boots I guess you could make a decision to either scrap them or look into the viability of taking things to the next diy level. Time and energy, cost of materials, etc would of course be a consideration, not to mention your level of interest in proceeding along such lines. So much information is available, RU-vid videos and a multitude of websites offering practical, step by step knowledge and the necessary tools and materials that I personally think it is possible to have a go at it. I have a pair of chukkas and a pair of moc toe work boots, both with cemented Vibram soles that I have been reattaching constantly for a couple of years now, using superglue most of the time. I intend to attempt adding an authentic, hand sewn goodyear welt to one pair, although such a thing is not customarily done. The company that made these shoes designed them as a less expensive alternative to their standard, much pricier selection. They were never meant to be resoled or repaired, just tossed in the garbage when worn out. Although this company has a repair service, they won't repair this particular model. Except for the soles the leather is in great shape and they are as comfortable as can be. So in time I will make the attempt. When finances allow I am also seriously considering having the Vibram soles replaced on one of the pairs by a company I found online that offers that service for about 75 dollars. If you google "US Vibram" you can find it and check out their resoling service.

Thanks for this awesome temporary quick-fix idea! I can't wait to try this Gorilla Glue on a pair of OP shoes which I bought at Walmart four months ago. I barely wore them, and they were still new; and in several weeks later the sole broke half-way from the toe... walking in the shoe, it looks like a talking fish! lol ...So, this quick fix will help me get at least a few more months out of the OP's. Lesson#1: NEVER buy OP shoes from Walmart... they won't last long for daily walkers like me.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 9 лет назад
+Tony Vazquez ha ha talking fish. This gorilla glue fix might not be the best but it certainly did work in a pinch. It lasted about 3 weeks before I had to reapply. I did use them pretty heavily in the woods and in the creek.
@TonyVazquez8265
@TonyVazquez8265 9 лет назад
+Land to House ...Understood. Even just a short fix will hold me out until I buy another pair of shoes. I have a second pair that I wear for work. My OP shoes are comfortable, though. I walk wherever I go whether it's to/from work or shopping. I average about 3 or 4 miles per day walking (I don't hike. lol). My shoes last about 5 years before I buy new shoes.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 9 лет назад
+Tony Vazquez Thats how I was with these boots. Just make them last long enough to get a new pair. With that amount of walking you are bound to get a lot of wear and tear on your shoes.

I have a new pair of Danners, and one of the Vibram soles peeled off almost immediately. This just happened today, and I’m considering shooting a short screw through the sole about every two inches of gluing, to really suck it down tight. Thoughts? These damn boots were like $250!

Alright buddy, let me tell you what I used to try and fix my split-in-two boot soles. First was the same Gorilla glue in this video and it expanded just like yours. It hardened and cracked and I was left with the same split. No fix. Then I returned the monkey glue and got Shoe goo from Home depot - also no fix - just the opposite, got soft and still split open. Next attempt...... melt the rubber sole with heat from torch! Try to heat mend them back!
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 8 лет назад
+murf003 I like the melt idea too! I think I will look for my old boots and try the heat gun on them. What do I have to lose but an old pair of boots I dont use right? Let me know how this works on your boots. I was able to get a few more weeks per glueing.
@sharkwhisperer7326
@sharkwhisperer7326 8 лет назад
I actually glued, screwed, and duck taped mine. I'm going to let the shoe goo dry until next summer... Then I'm going to heat torch the break together and melt and mend that split under my soles. That might just do it. The final step will be to get odor eaters as that's part off the healing process:)
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 8 лет назад
+Tiffany Coghill I have not tried the heat option either. I just went with the new boot option because it just seemed more reliable.

So I went to the local cobbler here in town and showed him my boot and he said just use contact adhesive. I told him of the extreme environment they would be in but I don't think he got it. I'm sure he was just use to repairing women's heels and stitching shoes together. So not to be stopped in my quest, I went to a locally owned mountain equipment retail store. I showed one of the repair guys my boot and he swore by this adhesive called SEAM GRIP. He said he repaired his boots that looked like yours and he is in the 2nd year of hiking in them with no problem. He mentioned that he has repaired rips in seams of tarps, air mattresses, and even a rip across his leather shoe ( along the side). My sole separation is just along the toe of the boot and not as bad as yours. This item is about 7 dollars to purchase. It has a 12 hour cure time. Anyways, I repaired my boot today and I am going on a 10 mile hike in the mountains tomorrow (I live in Colorado) to field test them. You can probably Google this item to find out more particulars.
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 9 лет назад
+Robin S You are probably right about the local cobbler. You could make video on that stuff! I have not heard of it before but it sounds like it should be good. If it holds up to a 10 mile hike I would think it is ready for anything. I wonder if AT hikers take along a tube of that for fixing stuff on the trail. For $7 you cant go wrong. Let me know how it holds up. You never know when you need to suggest a good shoe glue.
