This is NUTS! I've watched hundreds of hours of gorilla videos from zoos around the world and in the wild. I've never seen a mother let anyone else "babysit" her newborn infant, let alone a child! At first I assumed this was a first time mother maybe having mixed feelings about her responsibility. But then I realized it didn't look like a full grown gorilla. Once I read the comments I realized what the situation was but am still horrified. Seeing her first lay the baby down and move away was highly unusual and alarming enough but watching her drag this very new vulnerable little life around is outrageous. If the actual mother cares so little (and perhaps it's understandable as they have to crank out babies one after another in captivity as opposed to in the wild) about the safety, well being, care and mother baby bond of this newborn the zoo needs to intervene and hand raise it. I'm usually against that in a lot of cases but this situation makes that the only viable solution. I'm not familiar with this group at all and while I would normally make the effort to figure out who and where they are, I'm almost afraid because of the possibility I'll learn this precious little angel didn't survive.
She does favor the boy... I see the little girl on the ground but never the boy. Maybe this will change in the future? I'm sure the mom gets worn out with both of them to care for.
Okay I don't understand why but isn't it always N'Hasa that the others have while N'Gayla keeps N'Kato? Can anyone explain why? Just curious! Is she further advanced maybe?
