Perfect timing as always! We’ll be in Zermatt for a good chunk of a day only (😢) in August on our way to Lausanne from Lake Lugano via bus (and train), but this will be super helpful. You literally just showed me what I had planned to do in Zermatt is most definitely doable! As always, THANK YOU!

Thank you for your youtube and other resources (we bought the 1 week guide to the Jungfrau region) which were very helpful on our recent Swiss trip! We stayed 3 days in Zermatt as well, and walked down from Rotenboden into Zermatt on 17 June. Lots of snow on the paths to Riffelberg and many people were ill prepared. On track some snow still went waist deep. Riffelsea was frozen. Someone standing on it found the ice wasn't that thick and got rather wet! People were expecting sheep in conditions with snow everywhere! Just apply some due diligence whatever the time of year and especially outside of July and August. And you should have as good a walk down as we had. The food at Riffelberg was definitely earned!

Thanks for sharing your recent experience! We’ve had so much rain and snow in June so it’s not surprising to read the trails still had snow. Glad you were prepared and were rewarded with some tasty food!

Great video - I went up there in the summer of 1999 with my uncle and aunt on a day trip from Saas Fee - I wish I’d seen the sheep then? How cute are they? 😆 The landscape up there feels like you are on the moon doesn’t it? It reminds me of the Lünarsee just over the border in Austria.

Hi, if I booked the one-way ticket from Zermatt to Gornergrat but got off halfway at Rotenboden, do I need to buy another train ticket from Rotenboden to Gornergrat?🤔
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 5 месяцев назад
Hi there! No need for an extra ticket! As long as you don't back-track or double-up on any sections you can stop halfway and then continue the rest of your journey the same day on the one ticket.

Your videos are so helpful! Just wondering whether it is doable to do Matterhorn and Gornergrat AND do a hike (1-2 hrs) somewhere half way in one day... or should we do two separate days.... Or just choose..... A peak pass is valid for only one day...gets more expensive for 2 days.... hence my question. Thanks!
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps Месяц назад
If you want to do these two excursions in the same day, look into the Peak2Peak Ticket. It's possible to include a hike...if you want to do this, we suggest going to Glacier Paradise in the morning and Gornergrat in the afternoon. Enjoy!

Perfect timing! I just purchased your new Zermatt travel guide and Lucerne this morning! And your transportation guide is also amazing. I am just still struggling to figure out the best way to get from Milan to Zermatt using the glacier express. I’m assuming we would need to travel from Milan to St Moritz… and then take the express from there???? And we can use the half fare card to purchase that ticket??? Planning a Switzerland trip is tricky! Thank you for all of your help!
@AplinsintheAlps
@AplinsintheAlps 7 месяцев назад
Woohoo, so glad you snagged our new Zermatt Guide! And you're right that you'd need to travel from Milan to St. Moritz to hop on the Glacier Express. (Note that it only departs St. Moritz in the morning, so you'd probably have to travel from Milan and do an overnight in St. Moritz) The Half Fare Card will work on the Glacier Express tickets as well. Sounds like a super fun trip to Italy and Switzerland!!!

Usually they're only there between June and September. And depending on the snow conditions, the trail may not be open in May. Check the Gornergrat website for updates!

Just curoius as it looks like there are multiple trails from Riffelsee lake t Riffelberg....did you take trail 21 which show is as Riffelseeweb (on the zermatt map) or did you follow 15B which connects to 23 to Riffelberg. (so confusing as there are so many options :-)

We actually took a combo of both since we diverted to see the sheep along the way! And we recommend taking whichever trail passes by where the sheep are that day 😊🐑

This video just came right in time as we are on our way to 🇨🇭 at the end of the month. You guys justified why I should pay CHF121 (train+zoom) for this experience LOL I am debating doing this over the James bond brunch, now you gave me more reason to do both HAHA If you guys were to choose, will you still pick Schilthorn? Thanks for all the wonderful contents ❤
@AplinsintheAlps

Ooh tough question! Comparing the two (and assuming the weather would be perfect in both places), we'd choose Gornergrat over the Schilthorn. The views are just more unique (even though we still love the Schilthorn)!

You can see marmots at the free Wild Parks in Interlaken and Brienz, or at the Stanserhorn near Lucerne. But we aren't sure where they'd be in Zermatt (we haven't seen them there)!

Eh, maybe. But by public transport, it's 3 hours one-way. So that's a really long day to travel and hike and explore! In our opinion, we just recommend spending a few nights in Zermatt if you want to do this.
