Even today, this railroad is amazing; especially given the limited supplies available in HO scale back then. Handlaid track. Scratch built steam engines. It's a shame that the layout was lost in the fire after Allen died. Thank God some of these videos survived!

As a teenager and the youngest member of the California Central MR Club I had the privilege to visit Johns RR in the mid "60s. Wow. What a treat.

Thanks for this, guys. I've known, and admired, the G&D for nearly 60 years, and it is great to see it in live action, rather than magazine stills.

Video clips from the 1960's, I am sure. An amazing model rr , in its day. A fantastic and historic model railroad.

This is the early 50's as all of these clips were taken on the 2nd Gorre and Daphetid as apposed to the 3rd, most famous one.

John's original masterpiece is currently being rebuilt in full museum quality accuracy. Please stop in and follow along. How often do you ever see something like this with updates as the work progresses. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JgQJV7eu4o0.html

What ever happened to John's layout? Is it still around or was it torn down?

Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a fire shortly after John Allen’s death in 1973. Only a couple of locomotives survived. The layout was a complete loss.

Anyone know what state the G&D was supposed to be in?

John Allen was a professional photographer in Monterey, Ca. His freelanced Gorre & Daphetid Railroad, abbreviated as GD, except not in pleasant company, served mountainous Colorado.

Rather run down, and fighting to keep going - hence the name.

May I ask what is that hon3 0-6-0t at 1:46

She wasn't an 0-6-0, but a 2-4-0. At the beginning of the film, at 0.19 to about 0.25 you see the finished model working a mixed train on the Devil's Gulch & Hellangon line.

@@Trainz11She actually is an 0-6-0. She was the Devil’s Gulch and Helengon #1. #3 was the 2-4-0. I don’t believe that John ever got around to painting it. This was shot on his earlier layout in 1953, he moved and began to build his iconic basement empire in 1954. #1 was stolen by an unknown visitor in 1960. John’s friend Whit Towers also had a model stolen from him at some point.

Although great in its day, it doesn't compare to the standards today

It's better than modern day, nowadays layouts are all overrun by plasticy cheap trains and buildings. This layout was built in the days when the buildings were scratch built, the cars were wooden and heavy duty paper kits, the locomotives were metal and pulled a ton, the track was hand laid, and the power was all DC, no computer controlled DCC. It may not be as precise and prototypical, but it has a more believable look.
@nicky9499

Amen to hand laid track. I've never seen another layout since that didn't use plastic prefab track.
@TheDrummerman1951

Why wouldn't it compare to todays standards. It is one of the finest model railroad ever built.
