Nace's Videography "The Art of Model Railroading Video Series"; Vol. 1 - Howard Zane's Piermont Division. A 2 hour, 2019 Telly Award Winner for excellence in a non-broadcast documentary, Blu-ray/DVD program showcasing the Erie, NYC, C&O, and L&N in the transition years (1940s/1950s) as freight cars travel from Northern New Jersey (Erie, CNJ) to Northeast Ohio (NYC), and then onto the Cincinnati/Louisville area (C&O/L&N) with over 80 different freight & passenger locomotives polishing the rails, mostly from Howard's extensive brass roster in runby, pacing, & switching operations, all through breathtaking scenery including 6 newly redesigned areas never before professionally videoed. Additional segments include layout overviews and in depth interviews with Howard as well as others, and a Special Feature with some of the rarest brass trains ever made running on the layout, including a C&O Nakiyama Poppet 4-6-4 Hudson. Recorded in HD 1080p with the latest in video equipment and authentic, synchronized sound we literally put you "in the scene" for virtually all of the action in this remarkable 2,850 square foot masterpiece. Best viewed using the RU-vid playback setting of 1080p HD. Thank you for watching, and please visit our web site to sign up for notification when additional videos will be ready for sale.

I came here after seeing "the world's largest model RR layout". This one is much more aesthetically pleasing. And now I see why. Howard is a true artist, so he understands how to place and color the background to make it look real. You must have a good HD camera mounted on these trains. Following along, watching the scenery, was like going back in time. I love it!

Ya know! You guys always film the Train operation and all that, (which is cool) but what I call my family in to see is all the details in the background. Right off the bat I called everyone in to see the all the work that was done in the background of the introduction. "Look at ALLLL the stuff they had to make and place in their spots!!" …. "Look at all the TREES!!" On all these different RU-vid videos by the many different folks that mainly show train operation. But its all the work these guys do that is absolutely amazing …. the scenes and the detail work, WOW! I think that most times this fact gets missed. The family will sit down and just be amazed … usually looking at everything besides just the trains. What a beautiful layout, and amazing work that has been done, all ya can say is "WOW!"

Outstanding videography! Most model railroad videos do great w/the modeling but forget the video part. They fail to consider that while most any phone will provide high quality video they forget that every even tiny bobble is magnified by the scale (a 1" move is, in HO, 87" - over 7 feet!). Your superior depth of field, many lock-down shots & fabulous tracking (VERY smooth!) coupled with "eye level" & the addition of real train SFX all add to the beauty of the modelling rather than detracting from it. Congratulations! Really nice work...

Finally, real videography! Correctly exposed, no amateurish handheld stuff, no rafters or ugly walls visible that break the illusion. Well done. I like your use of a camera slider. I've always wondered, who is going to be the first one to hire an After Effects artist to composit billowing steam coming out of the stacks of the locomotives. And moving people on to the platforms. -:)
@nacesvideographyllc9075
@nacesvideographyllc9075 6 лет назад
Thank you Matt, I greatly appreciate you noticing the work that went into getting these scenes, some of which took upwards of an hour to setup & shoot from multiple camera angles (which the final program will show from both in many instances, such as the Erie 2-8-4 on the turntable). All shots were taken using fluid head tripods, boom arms, and sliders (or a GoPro on a train if the scene is deep in the layout), all while using proper light exposure, no outside objects in the scene (stairs, plumbing, ceiling tile, etc.), and while keeping a good depth of field as I feel the background is as interesting and impressive as the train action in many cases. If I do introduce "after affects" at some point I would probably keep it fairly limited to a few clips, as I want the viewer to see the actual art of these masterpieces as if there were there in person, but I will keep an open mind on that idea, especially smoke from the locomotives as several models come with that feature now. Best Regards - Forrest

I have to say, I was just looking online for tips on model railroad videography. Because I want to become a better cameraman and wanting to expand this little series I have. Your video was the first suggestion (From google searching) and I thought I may have found my answer. Not only did I enjoy the layout itself but also tips on how to shoot really opened my eyes. Thank you so much! :) P.S. I should definitely invest in a better camera. The handheld was fine, but I think it's time to move on soon.

Greetings. yes the B&O P7A is a beautiful Key imports model, which Howard acquired & weathered during our last days of shooting along with the B&O 2-8-8-4 & 2-6-6-4 in the video. Since the story line had already been completed, and he did not have any B&O interchange on the layout, we used the interview segments to show his latest acquisitions in the program. Glad you liked seeing it.

Greetings, and thank you for your interest. While some preliminary shooting was done back in May of 2017 to test my new equipment, location lighting, etc., the main video shooting began last September, with most being done between November 2017 and February 2018. In all, 22 days were spent on site obtaining over 100 hours of video, comprising of over 500 clips, plus over 100 still photographs. Over 800 hours of my time has been spent traveling, videoing, editing, and doing sound overlays, along with an additional 65 hours of contracted video consulting & technical services. Now that I am more familiar with the editing process as well as my new equipment, I expect to be able to reduce the number of hours for the next video down to about 600-650 hours, plus travel time. For each minute of finished video, it takes anywhere from to 1-4 staff hours of shooting & editing to complete, depending on the action complexity of the scene as well as the number of cameras covering that scene (usually 2, sometimes 3) to get different angles and vantage points as well as both fixed and panning views. I am very pleased & exciting to announce that Tony Koester's Nickel Plate Road is scheduled to be the next release of this series, and I have also been in communication with another well known model railroader for the third volume and plan to meet with that individual late this year. Best Regards - Forrest Nace
@iceeking2006
@iceeking2006 5 лет назад
Good stuff Forrest. I want to personally thank you for featuring Tony Koester's Nickel Plate. That's one of the premier layouts in the hobby. 3D art. I'm really looking forward to that DVD. May I suggest doing a "cabride" of that layout as a special bonus? I'm sure you're familiar with the concept. Some have posted stuff like that on here. Some are good, some not so good. Of course the "walking giants" ruins most cabride clips, and of course the speed being either too fast or too slow. It would be extra nice to tour this masterpiece's main line from down below.
@nacesvideographyllc9075
@nacesvideographyllc9075 5 лет назад
Yes, Tony's ability to have tremendous depth through blending of the foreground & background that are only 16"-24" in actual depth are a work of art, to say the least. I showed Howard Zane some of the video I have already shot and he was truly amazed, as some scenes look like the go on for miles. I will definitely do the "passenger car, observation car, and caboose" riding scenes as I did for Howard's layout, as shown in the promo from the 4:14 - 4:47 timeline, and if I can do a realistic cab sequence (no walking giants, ceiling tile, isle ways, etc.) I will definitely add it, but usually I am trapped using scenes going around curves for that. I did do some experimenting when at Howard's, but was not pleased with any of the results, as usually the ceiling was always in the scene, as well as isleways. Thank you again for the positive feedback and suggestions, Forrest
@iceeking2006
@iceeking2006 5 лет назад
I understand what you're saying about the ceiling and isle ways showing during a cabride. However after reading many comments on cabrides posted on here, most people are annoyed about the walking giants and maybe noise. Some posters put a "cab" overlay in front of the camera but I think that covers up too much of the layout. I think putting a black bar on the left and right side of the finished product helps out with the isle ways not showing as much. I think this would be done after filming the cabride by simply editing it. However some people get carried away and make the black edge bars too thick and that's not good either. I would say the thickness would probably have to be in between thin and medium. Also a cabride with normal speed on the Nickel Plate would probably take 20 minutes or more so I don't know if you can fit that into the DVD, but it would be fantastic if you could. Are you on track to produce 2 to 3 DVD's per year? Are they going to have a region code? Keep up the marvelous work!
@iceeking2006

@nacesvideographyllc9075 6 лет назад
Greetings, and thank you for your "Thumbs Up" and subscribing. I am shooting for a late May / early June release as I still have approximately 300 hours of editing yet to do, mostly with the audio as I want to make it as authentic as possible, including additional railroad sounds (such as the turntable spinning) and synchronized chuff rates per wheel revolution. The program will be released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, and will be approximately 2 hours. Yes, I plan to release 2 to 3 programs per year on different layouts. Thank you - Forrest

Are the sound affects coming from the train themselves.
@nacesvideographyllc9075
@nacesvideographyllc9075 5 лет назад
Hello Manuel, while all of Howard's locomotives have sound installed, and he also does have some ambient sounds (frogs by a pond, birds by a river, etc.) all of the audio sounds in the program were overlaid for several reasons: (a) attempting to get a shot with all other noise in the room completely quiet would have been nearly impossible, as sump pumps kicking on, furnaces running, toilets being flushed, phones ringing, sneezing, people walking upstairs, etc. happens; (b) some of the sound files are copy-written and cannot just be used in a commercial program without permission; (c) I could add other railroad sounds such as the freight cars passing by, turntable spinning, etc. which are from my personal recordings; (d) I could add other ambient sounds such as automobiles, waterfalls, etc. that I purchased from a company that sells such sounds for commercial productions; (e) I was able to precisely synchronize the steam chuff sounds with the rods properly being in the 12, 3, 6, and 9 positions. If you liked the locomotive sounds, both steam & diesel, I have an agreement with ESU Loksound to use their sound files in my video productions, I recommend you check out their products (www.loksound.com). The music is from Howard & Sandy's band. In all, I spent 300 hours on the sound effects for the 2 hour program. Thank you for your question, I appreciate your interest .... Forrest

Hello, if you are referring to the one that appears at the 5:30 time mark, it is a Key Imports brass model of a New York Central L2A 4-8-2. While most railroads called the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement "Mountains", since the New York Central Railroad was rather flat they decided to call their 4-8-2 locomotives "Mohawks", after the river in New York.

Actually, these are real sounds on recorded chips and made to be in sync with driver rotation of steamers. Other sounds are recorded from real sounds. I have a major shitload of older locos with coffee grinder gear noise, I'd be most happy to bestow on you for a minimal price. As far as being out of step...not to worry. The hobby is about modeling in all tastes.

@@howardzane5453 For me the sounds are way too loud and only emanate from the engine, there are for instance no clanking sounds of couplers.
