Gossip Girl premieres July 8th on HBO Max. Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran, a writer and executive producer on the original series, this extension of the pop culture classic takes us back to the Upper East Side finding a new generation of New York private school teens being introduced to social surveillance nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark. But does it need to be: a 'revival'? Wouldn't it be much better, if rather than being contingent upon late 2000s nostalgia, it was an extension of the original-existing in its own 'individual' realm? commenting upon the 'vibe' of today, rather than that of a bygone era?

But the original also aired before social media really blew up, so the gossip girl part of the show was new and strange and a gossip site. But now we have drama channels and commentary channels on YT that report everything that happens. so This one can show that gossip girl is all of us, since we share so much on social media and its so easy to snap pictures ect. So its certainly modernized to the current time. Because when OG GG aired, the Iphone was barely in play 🤣🤣

@@ozark885 EXACTLY. We loved Gossip Girl in the early 2000s because it showcased something fresh and abnormally scandalous that young watchers weren't used to seeing at the time. But we've since then seen it a million times... This revival was not needed.

They form a band in the story, which became a real band. The telenovela was known for approaching teen issues. (Sorry if i comited some mistake, my inglish it's not the best hahaha)

Why is every high school show now so dramatic, edgy, dark, depressing, every look, every word said, any conversation..it's always over the top dramatized and darkened..no one talks like that in real life.. like yes og gg had many of those moments as well but it wasn't just that and it wasn't the biggest part of someones personality..Euphoria, Elite, this, 13 reasons why... my God what kind of schools and what kind of people are those..evrything is so dark and edgy and so unrealistic.. I kind of agree but at the same time it’s more realistic, this generation is constantly playing a “character” due to social media, especially young rich socialites like them, they’re always hiding something behind a facade and you’re never sure who they really are, the previous GG didn’t have such a strong social media presence and so characters were more like the common person that we can relate to since aside from GG they didn’t have their every move watched and broadcasted. You get what I mean?

I miss the preppy OG gossip girl, Hollywood tries to make everything overly edgy dark melodrama (Teen Wolf, Riverdale, WINX CLUB) Im not saying everything should be the same but why would the queen b ask a newbie to hang out?? On a First glance?? Meticulous Blair Cornelia Waldorf would neverrr. Even Jenny Humphrey had to have a connection just to speak to Blair..just have to see how this plays out I guess

Some guy overdosed in front of Serina and sent her into a spiral. Chuck practically pimped Blair out to get back his hotel. They basically covered for chuck when he didn't help his father up before he feel off the roof of the hotel. And that's just a few things. Gossip girl has always been dark and "edgy".

The difference in networks. CW will never have the quality that HBO does which is a network that has always produced shows with solid cinematography that make their show's episodes feel like movies. I adore the OG gossip girl but could you imagine what it could have been if it had been on a better channel? How those darker storylines would have been handled? I mean literally anything with Chuck would feel like there was more depth. I'm excited to see how the reboot handles things.

@@seannanana84 true but I think the appeal with og gg was that there were a lot of shady stuff going on among this whole upbeat atmosphere. plus there’s way too many dark shows, it’s one of the first teen shows that was able to mix comedy with mystery. that energy is so comforting in my opinion because you don’t need to mentally prepare yourself for anything extremely dark.

I'll definitely give this a chance, but it feels like it lacks a certain soul that the original had. Don't get me wrong, the original had a lot of problems, but it seems like it had a more unique and cohesive aesthetic (in terms of costuming, sets) and a bit of humour to lighten up the heavy drama. Whereas this just feels like a cheap facsimile of other, better current teen shows. I'll reserve my full opinion for when I watch the first episode!

The custom designer from OG GG came back for this so I have a feeling that will be on point like the original. Actually a lot of the creators ended up coming back for the reboot which is cool makes it less like a knock off and more like a new era of kids.

Agreed. I've seen people say our problem with it is they're making this show diverse etc but I don't think so. I don't even think it's anything specific? It's just-- the vibe is not there. This is easily just another trendy 20s show about rich kids. And that would be okay if it stood on its own but to directly link it to GG and then have none of the OG vibes ... Messing with an iconic show like GG is already hard enough when you actually try to get it right, because fans ARE gonna compare the two, but to actually not even try to bring back that nostalgia ... it's shooting yourself in the foot ngl

When I think of gossip girl I think of a really fun lighthearted show with just the right amount of drama, this looks like it has no traces of fun or lightheartedness and just seems like the whole thing is gonna be super serious/dramatic/dark/gritty the whole time

What's annoying about all these reboots is that nothing is original. I'm sure this will be a good show for teens these days, but the reason we have such problems with shows like this is because it's literally the same damn show.. like the OG gossip girl was good because it was different. They can do something new if they really tried...with all the challenges teens face these days, it really wouldn't be that difficult to create a drama matching today's challenges. you know what, Gossip Girl makes more sense now, kids acting way older than they actually are, the constant obsession with image, the anonymous call outs from an online source, the desperate need to please an influencer who controls your social standing. When I was a teenager watching the original show it felt like a silly concept, now it's a bit more realistic. (I still hope it has absolutely stupid as hell plotlines like the original did though, although not as stupid as it's ending!)

Yeah this had me angry too everytime i saw reboots or remakes, being Original. So this is where it gets stupid...original in this context doesnt actually mean original as we know it. It means that the movie or series advertised or published was made solely in-house. Meaning that no foreign (3rd party) production or other companies were used outside of the network...MAX in this case. It's quite silly... but hope that kinda clears it up.

The show itself is a Max Original, but that doesn’t mean they are taking credit for the idea of Gossip Girl, it’s what streaming services use for their titles, people just look for any reason to complain. Pretty Little Liars is listed as a Netflix Original outside of the US, because originally it was exclusive to Netflix in many countries outside of the US, it has nothing to do with owning the idea or premise of the show, it’s owning the distribution and in this case the production of the show.

Honestly, this doesn't look bad at all, but what made the original Gossip Girl a worldwide success was its brightness, its colors, the fashion choices of each character that made them so unique and easy to identify, and most of all New York City. They showed us one side of this city that most of us will never get to know. It was magical. Turning Gossip Girl into another "dark teen show" will not make it a success, the show will just fade into the background. We already have Elite, Euphoria, Riverdale and so many others and any of them have the magic of the old teen shows because they're saturated. Hope the producers of this reboot can see that.

Stop thinking like that. It’s not meant to beat the original it’s a continuation of the shows concept. It’s meant to honor the original.

we havent even seen the showw dear lord lol. i love og gossip girl but ppl need to stop putting it on a golden platter when it was so problematic and the writing went to ass after the first season
