The fact that Dan actually used the Gossip Girl website and persona as a means to foster his relationship with Serena is very similar to how Joe stalks and studies Beck and Love in the hopes that they will fall in love with him.

If you watch the show, you can see and hear sometimes them mentioning other people on gossip girl.

It's just like Nate said, everyone is exactly where they wanted to be. Why would they be mad? If you're saying they should be mad at Dan, then I would say what did Dan do that was so much worse than anyone else in that group? He wouldn't have had material if they weren't trying to hurt each other at every turn.

Overall he is creepy as hell, and I can't believe everyone just lets it slide after he spread rumours about his closest friends, that is unforgivable. Talk about a SOCIOPATH.
@@Strawberry-mv8hu everything about his sister was explained and Chuck is way more creepy and did way worse in just the first episode. He was just posting what he was sent. Morally bankrupt, sure, but so is everyone else in that group. Chuck sold blair out for a hotel and sexually assaulted two girls in just one episode (which was almost never brought up again). Serena slept with Blair's boyfriend and leaked Blair's diaries to gossip girl. Blair was constantly cooking up plots to hurt whoever got in her way and Nate slept with his girlfriend's bestfriend (and was pretty unapologetic about it). But they all still forgave each other.
I think the biggest clue was right in s1 episode 1. Who the HELL is going to write about "Lonely Boy" other than Lonely Boy? Nobody questions it but come on, lots of guys probably take a glance and stare at Serena. Why would anyone notice Dan of all people except for Dan himself? =P

I love the 4th wall breaking in Kristin Bell and Rachel Bilson's scene! They literally call each other "Bell" and "Rachel", Kristin is the actual voice of GG, and Rachel finished playing Summer on the OC in 2007 ("you can't pull off high school anymore"). They joke about how the books are really good and built-in movie audience lol. And the wink, so adorable. Literally the only good thing about the reveal.
So if Dan is Gossip Girl, many storylines suddenly make no sense. For instance: how on earth did he manage to do the sibling reveal at Blair's brunch for Chuck in S2? The minions sent the hit to GG while Dan was already at the party, and he had no internet access because Nelly had stolen his phone. He just had his dad's old cell, which wasn't modern enough to put out a blog post. Yet while he was there, GG put out the hit. Oh well. One of many instances you have to forget if you want this ending to make sense, I suppose...
Yes, the whole thing was a terrible idea...and made less sense how idiotically opinionated he always was with his sister. God. I hate Dan Humphrey (and Rufus and his stupid waffles)

I find it funny that Penn Badgley plays both Dan in Gossip Girl and Joe in You and are two different characters in two different shows in two different universes but they both somehow seem connected. 1: Dan mentions Fitzgerald in this scene, something Joe also mentions 2: Dan mentions about reading books, Joe is book obsessed and works at a book shop 3: Dan’s narration sounds exactly like how Joe narrates his plans 4: Dan talks about the rich and elite and how they’re all powerful, something Joe also talks about in Season 2 of You with the Quinn’s 5: Dan said he used the Gossip Girl website for his own use with his relationship with Serena, Joe also uses the internet to search and stalk the women he becomes obsessed with It seems like they are somehow connected universes and that they were both planned together in some way although that’s not true. It’s just funny that this predates You but has the same, or need I say, exact tone of You.
Also, both have a bit of a fucked up relationship with the mother. And no matter where Joe is-NYC, LA, London-he somehow always finds himself among the elite despite being an outsider. The similarities are so many that I keep myself wondering if the writer of You (the books) wasn't a huge fan of Gossip Girl and Dan. The main source of inspiration might have come from there. And the fact that they both got to be played by the same actor, and both with a narration just makes it more surprising.
Everyone hates on dan being gossip girl but I truly love it. He wasn’t evil or a villain. He was on the outside trying to get in. He was being a writer showing people how money and wealth can affect people and the plastic of people. And then he even admits he fell into the trap of the upper east side but in the end identifies with himself and himself only. He’s a remarkable character idc.
I agree! Him being Gossip Girl makes a lot of sense. Dan always wanted to fit in but unfortunately you can’t fit in unless you are born filthy rich and in the upper class. Every human would have wanted to live and be like those Upper East siders EVERYONE. Dan is just like us. Once you experience and are in this world there is no turning back. You want more, you want to be in it like them. I think Dan is a phenomenal character with much depth and he is very relatable.

If Dan being gossip girl doesn’t totally make sense here’s why: It wasn’t originally supposed to be dan it was supposed to be Eric. However, people were already suspecting it was Eric in the early seasons and putting out articles so that idea had to be scrapped. They were going to go with Nate afterwards because by that point he never sent a tip to gossip girl. But then somehow they changed their minds to Dan. Dan wasn’t the original plan at all, an article they saw took Eric out of the running. The writers/producers said that once they couldn’t use Eric anymore no one else really would have made complete sense. They thought about using a random side character but preferred it being someone from the main cast. Since the actor who played eric left they probably would have had to change it anyways. No matter who they chose from the main cast would have some kind of plot hole and they knew that. Also no one in the cast knew who gossip girl was until the scene was filmed. Pen said he was told right before delivering the line and he was shocked. He said it made sense why it had to be dan at that point but that it didn’t make sense because Dan also sent tips.
I always thought it would be jenny because she was so interested in the upper east side drama and wanted to fit in. And when she left constance gg became less relevant as she was not into the drama anymore. My first choice was her and second was dan. He was the obvious choice in the end.
I thought so, because I remember a specific scene, the one where Gossip Girl posts that Nate and Jenny kissed, and Dan seems shocked and tries to hide the post from Rufus. Dan actually seemed surprised that Nate kissed Jenny, and seemed to have no knowledge about it before that scene. That’s just one example out of many plot holes. But I like the idea of it being Dan more than Nate or Eric, because why would Eric do it. He’s got nothing to prove, and to me he seems to have no interest in that world (then again, it could’ve been out of boredom, the thrill of no one knowing that it was him) But Dan has a better reason, he was an outsider trying to fit in, and he decided to do that, he had to place himself into the game. (Sorry for the long comment 😬)
I honestly prefer the fake twist in S5 where we thought it’s Georgina all along. Yes, it would have been too obvious since Georgina is already one of the main antagonists but it was more logical. Heck, I even think that they could have actually keep Kristen Bell as the true Gossip Girl.
This just show that Serena didn’t deserved Dan, she deserves Nate a lot, im so pissed on this, Season 1 is better when Dan is good and when Nate and Serena get back together is the best ever

The Upper East Side was like something from Fitzgerald or Thackeray. Teenagers acting like adults, adults acting like teenagers: guarding secrets, spreading gossip, all with the trappings of truly opulent wealth. And membership in this community was so elite you couldn't even buy your way in. It was a birth right. A birth right I didn't have, and my greatest achievements would never earn me. All I had to compare to this world was what I'd read in books. But that gave me the idea. If I wasn't born into this world, maybe I could write myself into it. I'd overheard enough conversations to be able to mimic the language of the Constance girls. But every writer needs his muse, and it wasn't until that photo of Serena in the white dress that I knew I had something strong enough to actually create a legend and launch a website. Within weeks I was getting dozens of emails with stories about Upper East Siders, so I posted them anonymously. And then I got more. Before long, it was a monster. Everyone was sending in tips. And when Serena came back from boarding school, I wrote my first post abut me: Lonely Boy. The outsider, the underdog. For some reasons, i like that dan is gg. In in season 1 when gg released the labels, it said Dan was labeled the ultimate insider. And that was true because he knew every hit of gossip the student cook up

Dan and joe are very similar. Like Dan being gg makes him very stalkerish and creepy. And the way he lusted over Serena in a white dress and then became so obsessed he started an entire website just to be part of her life. Sound like something Joe Goldberg would do

Then after some time I stopped watching somewhere in S05 bc man it gets so effing boring there. The girl at 00:35 sounds exactly like gossip girl and winks at the camera when she says who's gossip girl. And at the end of this episode the same girl talks about gossip girl not being over. I don't really believe that Dan is really gossip girl. I think I'm alone with that theory.
Also, Gossip Girl isn't over because there will be gossip EVERYWHERE ANYTIME. So it will just take one person to take up Dan's legacy and continue it... Nobody will really believe Dan did it anyway, just the people near him. ^^U And with that in mind... anyone can be gossip girl.
As someone who got “spoiled” to this having just finished season 1. Nah I’m new and fresh faced but my immediate thought was how the writers didn’t plan this reveal at the start. In episode 1 they straight said gossip girl was already a thing and an institution because the girls asked if Jenny was on there. Dan here says he didn’t create the website until after ep1. Also the first time that they even show a sign of dan being involved is when “gossip girl” putted Jenny’s boyfriend as gay. But to be fair gossip girl being the omniscient narrator of the show and also the limited blogger makes no sense. Like does she know all of what

I think this started when Dan saw how his dad lost women he loved (her mom and Lily) because he wasn't enough for them and money was a problem in their relationships. He thought that Serena would end up doing the same, when she is older shoe wouldn't respect Dan and just leave him for other man of her world... So Dan decided to make fortune and a name for himself.

My theory to why Dan acts surprised when a gossip girl post is sent is that he does that to practice his surprise place if he ever were to post in public and he had to act shocked. There is a lot of plot holes to this reveal, but that’s just my theory. i wanted nelly yuki or Eric to be gossip girl
LMBO Dan makes perfect sense for Gossip Girl. He fits. But it seems that for convenience sake they dropped him as GG for certain episodes which thus leaves loopholes. They should have just never unveiled who GG was.
Eric would have been the perfect Gossip Girl. He was an outsider in his own upper class world! That's why he befriended Jenny and Dan, it was because he felt like a brooklynite in his upper east sider culture.
